General information
Titles, audio books, and podcasts can be played back. Sound is output through the vehicle loudspeakers.
Depending on the vehicle equipment, the following audio sources can be used:

USB audio
Audio player and storage media with USB port
Information on all titles, for instance artist, genre or title, as well as playback lists, are transmitted into the vehicle. This may take some time, depending on the USB device, file size, and number of titles.
During the transmission, the titles can be called up via the file folder.
The information for approx. 16,000 tracks can be stored in the vehicle.
Titles with integrated Digital Rights Management DRM cannot be played.
Functional requirements
Compatible audio player or compatible storage device with USB port.
A USB port with data transfer is used.
Audio files are available in one of the following formats: MP3, MP4, M4A, M4B, AAC, WMA, FLAC.

Selecting the USB device
Connect the USB device at the USB port.
The use of the adapter cable supplied with the USB device would be ideal.

Bluetooth® audio
General information
Playback of music files on external devices such as audio devices or mobile phones via Bluetooth®.
The volume of the sound output depends on the device. If necessary, adjust the volume setting on the device.
Depending on the equipment version, up to four external devices can be connected to the vehicle. Two of these devices can be used for Bluetooth Audio.
Depending on the supported Bluetooth® version, some Bluetooth® device functions may be limited when using iDrive. If necessary, the missing functions can be accessed directly on the device itself.
Functional requirements
Bluetooth® device is connected to the vehicle.
Connecting mobile devices to the vehicle.
Bluetooth® audio playback was activated.
Selecting the Bluetooth device

Select the desired Bluetooth device from the list.

If the Bluetooth device is not listed in the device list, Bluetooth audio playback may have not been activated. To activate Bluetooth audio playback, proceed as follows:

Playback
General information
Information available for the current track is shown on the Control Display.
For USB and Bluetooth® devices, the selected playlist is displayed. This can be the result of a search or of a previously stored playlist. The display may vary when the music is played back using a smartphone app.
Further functions are displayed by tilting the Controller to the left. The scope of these functions depends on the selected audio source.
Selecting a title
Select the desired title from the playlist.
Starting with the selected title, all titles of the playlist are played.
Changing the title
On the radio, depending on the equipment:

Press the left or right button.

Press the left or right button.
The previous or next title from the playlist is played.
Fast forward/fast rewind
The fast forward/rewind must be supported by the mobile device and the app that is used.
On the radio, depending on the equipment:

Press and hold the left or right button.

Press and hold the left or right button.
Search criteria
General information
The possible search criteria depend on the selected audio source.
Sear for title information
The search criteria refer to the data stored in the title information.
Tilt the Controller to the left.

"Search"
Select the desired search criterion.
For criterion "Search", all titles containing the search string in the title information are displayed. Entering more characters will continue to limit the search results. Tilt the Controller to the right to display the list of results.
Select album, if needed.
Select the title at which the playback is going to begin.
The search for artists and titles can also be selected directly.
Tilt the Controller to the left.
"Artists" or
"Titles"
Titles where the selected search criterion is not stored are summarized under "unknown". Titles without title information can only be found via the folder structure.
Search for playback lists
Tilt the Controller to the left.

"Playlists"
A list of all available playback lists is displayed.
Select the playlist.
Select the title at which the playback is going to begin.
Information on playback appears on the Control Display. A playlist is created from the title list resulting from the search.
Search for further media
Depending on the USB device and equipment, separate audio book and podcast searches are possible.
Tilt the Controller to the left.

Select the desired medium.
Select the title at which the playback is going to begin.
Information on playback appears on the Control Display. A playlist is created from the title list resulting from the search.
Search in the directory structure
It is possible to search the USB devices via the directory structure.
The names of folders and titles correspond to folder and file names. The folder and file names can deviate from the names in the title information.
Tilt the Controller to the left.

Change into a sub folder, if needed.
Select the title at which the playback is going to begin.
Information on playback appears on the Control Display. A playlist is created from the title list resulting from the search.
Browsing through albums
Tilt the Controller to the left.

"Browse albums"
Available albums are graphically presented.
Turn the Controller to browse through the albums.
Select the desired album.
All titles of the selected album are displayed.
Select the title at which the playback is going to begin.
Tilt the Controller to the left. The Control Display shows information on playback. The playlist corresponds to the title list of the album.
Searching for similar titles
Tilt the Controller to the left.

"Similar titles (local)"
A list with similar titles is displayed.
Select the title at which the playback is going to begin.
Information on playback appears on the Control Display. A playlist is created from the title list resulting from the search.
Random playback
After activating random playback via the BMW system, the playlist is reloaded and tracks are shown and played in a random order. When using external devices, the device must support this function.
