While driving in residential neighborhood i got a warning chime with a message: power steering failure - service advancetrak. the car becomes very difficult to steer!!! tried to shut down and restart car. will not reset. this happened about a year ago. ford dealer found nothing wrong, just cleared the code and it worked as normal. very dangerous issue!! i have been letting my daughter, who is a new driver, use this car. i am now rethinking it, might have to sell the car and buy a safer car for her. *tr

I recently purchased the vehicle used with 43,000 miles on it. in order to get the vehicle registered in my state i had to have an emissions test done. at some point during the test the vehicle's electronic power steering system detected a fault that disabled the power steering. when i got back in the car i had no power steering and the trip computer listed the following errors: "service power steering now" and "service advanced trac". i immediately took the car to the ford dealer where they diagnosed the problem as being an internal electrical issue with the eps system. they stated this wasn't an issue that could be fixed other then replacing the whole power steering rack. the dealer is charging $1,854.52 for the job. i have looked up this issue online and it appears that many people have had this happen while driving. i wasn't driving the car at the time but the test did involve driving the car on a dynamometer up to speeds of around 60 mph. if the system failed then, it could have happened at anytime. i don't understand why the system shuts off automatically when it detects an issue. driving the car, and suddenly loosing power steering is a scary concept. these systems seem to be unreliable and put the passengers and other vehicles at risk. when reading in the owners manual about these error codes it states that the system will shut off when it detects a fault. but this is not a "normal" problem for cars. with a hydraulic system this would never happen. *tr
I was traveling approximately 45mph when the power steering service light came on and the wheel became difficult to turn. i had to move over onto the bike lane out of the way of oncoming traffic and came to a complete stop. i could not turn into a parking lot because the wheel was in the lock position. i then towed my vehicle to my house and called the dealership where it had been purchased. they looked up the vin and stated that there had not been any recalls, but according to the internet several 2010-2012 ford fusions have had this problem.
Traveling down the street at about 25-30 mph when the car alerted us that there was a problem, messages read service power steering now & service advtrac. we pulled over at the next block into a parking lot, turned the car off & looked for the power steering reservoir. found none, . turned the car back on and had no power steering. *js

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford fusion. the contact stated that while traveling various speeds, the power steering warning light illuminated. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was found that the power steering control software was corrupt. the vehicle was repaired. the failure mileage was 105,000. the vin was unavailable.
On my drive home from chicago to pontiac mi, i was just past halfway home when without any warning my car began beeping at me and displayed the following messages, service advancetrac, service power steering, service power steering now. simultaneously i lost all power steering however, its not the same as losing power steering on a normal car or driving an older vehicle that was never normally equipped with power steering. the wheel became locked to the right and the car darted to the right taking me onto the shoulder of the expressway, i fought back pulling the wheel to the left as hard as i could. suddenly i felt a popping sensation and the car darted to the left taking me from the right shoulder to the left lane. i again pulled the wheel in the opposite direction but the wheel felt locked, suddenly i felt that familiar popping feeling and the car darted off to the shoulder again. this same process was repeated until i could get the car stopped safely. upon taking the car to the dealership i was informed that there was a short in the electric power steering and would need a new rack and pinion. i've never reported anything like this before but i felt it my civil duty since i'm certain a person of lesser strength, like my fiance' wouldn't have achieved the same outcome. *tr
I was driving down the main highway in our town going around 45 mph when the car started beeping and an error message appeared on the dash saying that there was an error with the power assist. at that point, i attempted to move the steering wheel and verified that i had no power steering. i was able to finish driving home and left the car in the garage overnight. when we started the car the next day, the error message was gone and the steering wheel turned freely. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford fusion. while backing out of a parking space at approximately 4 mph, the steering ability seized without warning. the vehicle came to a complete stop. the dealer stated that the power steering rack was defective and needed to be replaced. the contact took the vehicle to an independent mechanic and had the vehicle repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 84,700.
Power steering went out while driving. took in to a ford dealer for diagnostic test, and the steering gear had gone bad. had to have it replaced. *tr
The vehicle is equipped with electric power-assisted steering (epas) that constantly fails while operating the vehicle at any speed. it is a safety concern due to the fact that when the power steering fails, it is hard to steer and control the vehicle. several blogs are discussing this issue regarding the same type vehicle.
I was driving on a residential street and got a flat tire. at the same time i received an error about the power steering and to service the advancetrac system. i thought everything was related to the flat tire. i got the tire replaced and the tire pressure error cleared but i still have no power steering. iwas told that the two issues were not related and that the power steering is completely separate. i see many many many complaints regarding this same problem with 2010-2011 ford fusions. there needs to be a recall asap. nothing broke on my car and the fluids are fine so there is no reason for this error and for the power steering to stop working. *tr
Started indicated "power steering fault in parking lot. power steering inoperative. dash board. shut down and restarted steering now fine. *tr
This is my second report on the power steering rack failure. this last rack (number 3) was also a salvage part. lasted six weeks, installed on april 26th, 2013. failure sequence is the same: service advance track, service power steering, shutoff car, service power steering now, no power steering. please fix this [xxx]. it is not safe or reliable. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford fusion. while driving approximately 55 mph, the steering seized and the engine warning indicator illuminated. the vehicle was towed to a dealer and the power steering motor was replaced. one year later, the failure recurred. the dealer was currently repairing the vehicle. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 19,000. updated 10/7/14*cn updated 3/25/2015 *js
This is the second time this has happened. we were driving on the freeway at about 65 mph with cruise control on but not set (icon was yellow and not green). we changed lanes and hit a rough place in the road, perhaps a slight pothole on the freeway. suddenly the chime was heard and the message service advance trac, then service power steering now. the slide icon also appeared. we did not slow down and drove at least a half hour at highway speed. we stopped and parked the car at walmart. when the car was restarted, no power steering at all. my gentleman friend is a farmer. he drove the car home without the power steering, fought the steering for miles. we will take it in to the dealer to reset it. the first time this happened, i was driving around 75 mph with the cruise control activated but not set (yellow icon, not green). i maneuvered a broad turn on the freeway at speed, and the slide icon appeared. then quickly the service power steering now message appeared. i continued driving for a mile, exited the freeway at my place of employment, and as i pulled into the parking slot, realized that the car was very difficult to steer. later, when i restarted the car, no power steering. had it towed, and the ford dealer reset the computer. this was 4 months ago. i wonder if there is a connection between cruise control engagement and advancetrac. can advancetrac be deactivated?? *tr ## vin failed ##
My wife driving a 2010 ford fusion with was driving down i 75 in detroit around 9:30 am to work, when all sudden the engine lost power. the maintenance light ( yellow wrench) started blinking rapidly. she could not accelerate even though is was pressing the accelerator pedal to ground. the engine started shuddering and shaking. my wife managed to steer the vehicle towards the exit on the highway. drivers behind her started to brake as her vehicle started to slow down. she managed to take the next exit and pull in gas station where she shut the engine off. after about a 5 min she started the car. she did not find any problem. she went home and called me. at home i put a code reader on the car and found it had the error p2111. investigating this further tells me it is due to fuel injection throttle body. i called the dealer huntington ford in rochester hills, mi who wants me to bring the car for checkup with scanner ( costs about $96). since the car has 58300 miles on it is no longer covered by factory warranty. i am concerned this is a serious safety defect and needs to be covered under warranty. i do see there a lot of people who have has this problem with 2010 ford fusions. *tr
After having steering rack replaced at a cost of $2000, i had driven a total of around about 350-400, approx. 3 days after having gotten the car back and i got the same warning service power steering, service advancetrac. i parked the car immediately. as soon as it was turned back on, the power steering was gone completely. had to have it towed back to the dealership. i then had to rent a car for another week while another steering rack was put in. the service manager at my dealership said that an engineer at ford told him that it was a faulty component in the steering rack for this model car. (still no recall?) i got my car back after another week and drove for about 250 miles in a total of 4 days when the warning light came back on. i had to have it towed again. all in all, i have over 3000 invested in this repair. have had my car towed 3 times in 3 weeks. i am scared to put my toddler in this car. *tr
I was driving when the "service power steering" "service advancetrac" notice came on. i parked my car and when i cranked it back up an hour later, the car would not steer. i could not move the steering wheel at all. it had to be towed to dealership and upon diagnosis was told it is a bad module in the steering rack, thus having to replace the steering rack! all in with parts and labor $ 2076. out of pocket expense.. *tr
I was driving on a state road at a rate of approximately 55 mph, as i was slowing down to enter an exit the power steering failed and i almost crashed into the cement barrier as the steering wheel locked up and was extremely difficult to turn. *tr
The electric power steering assist on the vehicle failed. the car was very hard to steer and it happened twice in one day. i have read of the same problem all over the internet. ford needs to fix this problem as i have read they are going to equip 90 percent of all vehicles with this type of power steering. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford fusion. while operating the vehicle at various speeds, the power steering suddenly malfunctioned and caused the steering wheel to become very difficult to turn. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the steering gear assembly was faulty. the vehicle was repaired, but the failure recurred. the steering gear assembly was replaced a second time in august of 2014, but the failure recurred in july of 2016. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 110,000.
Will driving down interstate 64 in kentucky i hit a rough expansion joint while crossing a bridge entering into west virginia afterwards the dash warning lights lit up with traction control light on and also telling me to service power steering. i also noticed a loss of power and could not gain any pressing down on the accelerator pedal. i released the pedal and pressed down again and gained power but did not have any power steering. i exited at the fist exit and pulled into a fuel mart to check under the hood to see if i could find a problem to which i couldn't. then i had a friend who is a mechanic check it and he said ford had a problem with power steering and it was a very costly repair but i could probably continue to drive it locally but with caution. my arms have increased in size due to the muscle needed to deal with the hard steering. well the other day the steering went completely out upon inspecting it we found the tie rod end on the drivers side had came loose and was completely stripped of threads to which it attaches to the steering rod. we replaced it and also found the other side was loose to. we need help nhtsa this is a big safety problem and not just a local one, please order a recall! I was driving around 25 mph straight in my 2010 ford fusion and heard a chime looked on dash and it read "advance trac needs service" also the lights for abs, traction control and emergency brake were illuminated. the power steering stop working at this time. car had no warning before steering went out. please fix this problem i see it is very common for 2010-2012 ford fusions. car is at dealership now, they reset the system and it's now working but they want me to buy a new steering rack which is $1100 plus labor but cannot guarantee that is the problem. however, even though they have no idea what exactly is causing the problem and resetting the system fixes it, they guarantee that the problem will happen again if i don't replace the steering rack. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford fusion. the contact stated that the power steering failed twice and they were unable to turn the steering wheel. when the failure occurred the service light illuminated on the instrument panel. the contact took the vehicle to the dealer who confirmed that they could not diagnose the failure. the contact stated that he decreased the speed of the vehicle whenever the failure occurred. the failure mileage was 36,000. the current mileage was 41,000. *tr
I was driving and all of a sudden the power steering went out. then i noticed it read " advanced trac needs service" and " service power steering now." i had no warning prior too this. it cost at least $100 just to take a look at it and ford service department says it may cost between 200.00 to 1000.00 + dollars to fix it. i noticed several complaint about this and i'm a little concerned and upset that this doesn't have a recall by now. *tr
Electric power steering failed while my wife was driving at 45 mph. car could not be manuvered without extreme difficulty. all indications led to a failed electric power steering rack. had it replaced with a part from a salvaged vehicle with light side damage and 25,000 miles. worked fine for 3 days, failed again at 50 mph. too difficult and not safe to drive, will be towed to dealer. need ford to owe up on this safety issue. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford fusion. the contact stated that while driving approximately 45 mph, the power steering assist failed as the power steering warning light illuminated. the vehicle was taken to a private mechanic where it was diagnosed that the power steering rack needed to be replaced. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure and current mileage was 42,000. the vin was not available. *tr
I was turning out of my street at approx. 5 mph in my 2010 ford fusion and heard a chime looked on dash and it read "advance trac needs service" also the lights for abs, traction control and emergency brake were illuminated. the steering wheel got very stiff and i could not turn making me hit a concrete barrier. car had no warning before steering went out. please fix this problem i see it is very common for 2010-2012 ford fusions. car is at dealership now and he thinks it may be the steering rack, which is extremely expensive to fix especially with 0 warranty which expired last december. *tr
My car has been making a weird hum/grind/low pitched roar noise for quite some time now. i took it in, it will cost 1,800 dollars to replace my power steering rack. but- apparently you cant just buy the rack, you must buy the whole kit (motor, tie rods, rack, clamps, you name it). because its been redesigned! ...i wonder why. yet there is no recall. fyi- if i didn't fix, the power steering would have soon failed, leaving me stranded. *tr
I was driving the vehicle in front of daughters school and bell went off and message displayed stating advanced trac power steering disabled. the power steering was gone, took it to the dealer they want $1800 for a new power steering rack plus labor. seems to be a common occurrence among 2010 fusions. we are exploring other options. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford fusion. the contact stated that while driving 35 mph, the steering wheel became very hard to steer and the service power steering now warning message displayed on the instrument panel. the vehicle was taken to the dealer. the technician diagnosed that the electric assist had burned out and as a result, the steering system needed to be replaced. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure but did not offer any assistance since the vehicle was no longer under warranty. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure and current mileage was 58,500. *tr
While driving home on highway at 50 mph the car suddenly alarmed service advancetrac and power steering now. my steering wheel locked on me. thank god it didn't cause an accident. i called a ford dealer they suggested i pull over try turning the car off and starting it again to see if message would disappear it didn't. they told me i would have to bring it in to be serviced. just for them to look at it it's $130. when i looked on internet i seen that there has been multiple complaints about this but no recalls. i also seen that it is very costly and the problem recurs. why no recalls yet? *tr
Driving home from work on the expressway at 65 mph when suddenly the service power steering now alert came on. lost all power steering and had to pull off the expressway. car had to be towed as steering wheel was locked in position. ford dealer tells me had complete power steering failure. this is a very dangerous problem and due to the number of complaints filed, i can't believe there has not been a recall on this. *tr
Started driving to get home from work and suddenly the service advancetrac light came on, didn't notice anything until i did a turn. the steering felt stiff, not really paying attention to the problem got home shut off the car. the next morning heading to work turned on the car and then the service power steering now light had come on as well. after that the power steering was gone, i couldn't turn the wheels. did some research and a lot of fusions are having this problem and so far no results without spending thousands of dollars at the dealer. *tr
We were three hours from home in the late afternoon when the power steering service soon light came on. we had one more stop to make so we did and tried to check the power steering fluid not knowing that this vehicle had electric assist steering. when we got back in the vehicle to go to the auto parts store and the alarm came on and the reading on the dash said power steering service now and the vehicle then was very hard to steer. after finally figuring out that we had the power assist steering and that there was nothing that we could do about it at that time. the salesperson told us that we could still drive it but it would be very difficult. we had no choice but to try to make it home and praise the lord we did get home safely. we took it to a mechanic and he said that the part to replace it would be around $1,000.00 not including labor. in doing research on the internet i found that this is a common complaint for this vehicle but that there is no recall as of yet for it. i would like to enter this complaint so that ford will look into making this defect a recall and help the consumers that have purchased these vehicles. my husband and i bought this vehicle less that 6 months ago and we love it but this problem has really been a disappointment not to mention the financial hardship it has placed on us. thank you for your time. *tr
While my daughter was driving the car on 12/25/12, the steering wheel became stiff and warning light came on. on 12/29/12, went to check car and could not drive it at all. you could not turn the steering wheel. i had it towed to the dealership. the power steering rack had to be replaced. they said something was wrong with the wiring. i also saw online there were many complaints concerning the same issue. because of this, it thought there could be a possible defect. the car is only three years old with low mileage. i mostly use the car to drive back and forth to work, which is 6 miles away. this could have been very dangerous, because you could not steer the car once the power steering went out. *tr
Driving at 30 mph, sliding car icon appeared and noticed a slight stiffness in steering. made it home with no further issues. next morning upon starting car, i had no power steering at all. two days later, power steering has not returned, but the 'service power steering now' indicator light is on. dealer is telling me no history of this type of incident. although i have found it all over the internet with 2010, 2011. and 2012 fusions and escapes. nhtsa, please help! *tr
I was driving out of work one day going approx. 15mph and the advance trac error came up on the dash , i pulled over , turned my car off and on again and seemed a little stiff in the wheel, noting that the service power steering now light popped on.on the dash it showed the slippery symbol the same light you may get on iced roads in the winter time, that never went off. to me it may have been a restart issue, about 50ft down the road the steering went out and 2 hours later it was towed. i went to a dealer and they said it would be a $1700-$2000 repair. i contacted ford and let them know my circumstances with some help at a different dealer with lower labor and part pricing , i was able to get it fixed. about a week after the repair the same issue and error came up on the dash and the same results with the steering went out, went to the dealer , they saw mud underneath of course because i live on country roads, replaced the part again and said this time ford will need to see pictures if a third incident like this happens and to make sure a full under body wash is initiated to remove any dirt. just this week on 1/22/2014, same issue, same results for a third time it started as i was heading into work, i went to the dealer and he tells me that it is an angle sensor in the steering , it was re-calibrated and if it faults again it will need replaced. so i question if the rack and pinion were fine, why did i have that replaced if it was an angle sensor to start out with. because this issue is reoccurring and i strongly believe that the rack and pinion which were replaced twice in a two week span of eachother, and now it is a sensor that i have never heard of. *tr
Driving along suddenly ding ding..service advanctrac and powersteering the display said and the steering becomes hard and pulls. *tr
Power steering light came on as power steering was lost. luckily i as able to pull over and park vehicle since i was only traveling 35 mph. however, this is a safety concern since there was basically no notice before losing all power steering. *tr
We had just bought our 2010 ford fusion 10 days prior to this incident. i had just picked up my children from school and when i was leaving the school parking lot i had too come to a complete stop (which is on a downward slope) when trying to accelerate the car lost all power and had shut off, i had no control of course and rolled right in front of an oncoming school bus that was in other lane. the bus had to come to a complete stop to avoid hitting us. it cranked right back up but seemed a little sluggish. my little girl was screaming for me to turn (which i was trying but could do nothing) she was very upset and crying. it never showed any sign of problems before hand. i contacted the dealer we purchased it from and they said they could do nothing it was not a ford dealer it was used when we bought it with 50000 miles. i contacted a ford dealership and they said unless it showed a sign they could do nothing i have tried other mechanics and nothing. we did have throttle body checked and it was fine. we have had several incidents of it shutting off with no warning and it is a regular basis it seems to not want to go when i press the accelerator.it seems slow to respond. the shutting off of the car only seems to happen when im trying to take off from a stopped position then it will die right after it starts going. this makes me very nervous and not want to go anywhere. we haven't had it long so we cant get rid of it due to the negative we have in the car and cant afford higher pmt. i will never go with ford again not saying that all are like this, but one bad apple can spoil them all for me. *tr
was about to turn into a parking lot off a main road and lost all control of power steering and vehicle started dinging service power steering and advance track. vehicle became very hard to turn, had someone been exiting the lot i probably would have hit them. *tr
When i started the car a new message stating "service power steering now and service advance autotrac" when i started the engine, a message stated "service power steering now and service advance autotrac" on dashboard. electrical steering failed and it was hard to turn. dealer can not fix it. tried to restart but problem stays. this is a dangerous safety issue and must be investigated by ford immediately. *tr
Power steering intermittently goes out for no reason while driving, causing very unsafe situation. dash warning says service advanctrac and service power steering now. ford dealer resets the code and then it works fine again until the next time(this time a month later). ford charges $100 to reset the code each time, then say they can't find a real problem. they suggest to replace a power steering unit for $1500, but they can't guarantee that it will fix the problem. when it happens, it is practically impossible to turn the wheel when car is sitting. even at highway speeds, it is still very hard to turn. i won't let my wife drive this vehicle any longer. no advance warning when it happens. there is a lot of traffic online about this problem, but the ford dealer says they have never seen or heard of this problem. the car is only 2 years old. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford fusion. the contact started the ignition and attempted to drive in reverese; however the steering wheel failed to turn. immediately she noticed there was a complete loss of power steering with the illumination of the warning indicator. the vehicle was driven to an independent mechanic with the power steering malfunction. the mechanic recommended the vehicle be diagnosed by a dealer. the vehicle had not been repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the problem. the approximate failure mileage was 64,848.
