We have classified the 1266 complaints from 2010 Ford Fusion about STEERING into the following categories.
I was driving the fusion when the power steering suddenly went out. it is nearly impossible to turn and could cause a serious accident if it goes out while being driven, as mine did. after parking the car, the advance trac and power steering service lights came on. unacceptable in a car less than 5 years old!!!!
The power steering froze and i was unable to steer the car. the power steering fault indicator came on in the display area. i have experienced this, briefly, many times right after starting the car. this was the first time while the car was already in gear. luckily i was just trying to get off my driveway at the time.
While driving at 50 mph my daughter lost power steering and had great difficulty pulling over safely. had the vehicle towed to garage who couldn't fix it so she had to drive to a dealer (it pulled badly as she drove) and the dealer fixed it $1525. and said they had seen this several times before
Advance steering service light came on, once i stopped and restarted the car had no power steering. i let the car die and let it reset itself (battery disconnected) and put it back together still no steering went to a shop they saw 2 codes one was to due with the electronic steering the other was transmission failure due to the the steering code issue.
My wife was driving home from work when suddenly she experienced a loss of power steering in her vehicle. after trying to keep from being in an accident she was able to pull her 2010 ford fusion into a parking lot. after she turned into the parking lot she turned off the vehicle and let it sit for a few seconds then she restarted the vehicle and she was able to proceed a little further. then it happened for a second time. once again she turned the ignition off, let it sit for a few moments then restarted the vehicle. she was able to drive a little further until it once again happened as she was turning into our driveway. on the morning of saturday 6/13/2015 i went out to the vehicle and started it up and tried to back it out of our dive way when the service the advance trac system message appeared. i turned the vehicle off the restarted the vehicle and then a different message appeared. this time it was the service power steering assist message. i then turned off the vehicle and contacted the local ford dealer and was told that it was a common problem with the fusion and that i would need to schedule an appointment to have the power steering rac replaced and it would cost around $1,800 to replace. i told the man that was ridiculous for a vehicle that has only 56,787 miles on it. i have researched this and have found that many other owners have experienced this same issue. i feel that this is a major safety issue and if it was not for my wife's quick thinking she may have been involved in an accident. please research this issue before it happens to someone else and unfortunately cost someone their life. please feel free to contact me anytime for additional information.
While my wife was driving home from work on 6/12 the power steering went out. she had a very difficult time trying to steer the car. it happens twice on her way home first time nearly caused an accident but she was able to coast it into an empty parking lot. she turned the car off and let it sit for a few. she then started it up again and tried to continue home when she got a block away it happened again i had one hell of a time trying to get it to turn into our driveway. got up the next morning as still the same issue advance trac needs seviced. if ford wants to turn out a substandard part i won't be buying another ford product again. no i'm being to it needs a new rack at 55000 miles and will cost around $1800. this is complete bs for a vehicle to need a new rack at that low of miles. this is very dangerous a ford needs to have a recall for this issue before someone gets hurt or causes an accident. if not sounds like i need to contact an attorney.
Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford fusion. while driving 37 mph, the power steering failed which made it difficult to drive the vehicle. the contact mentioned that the power steering assist fault warning light illuminated on the instrument panel. the vehicle was taken to a dealer, who diagnosed and recommended that the power steering control module needed to be replaced. the failure was reported to the manufacturer who referred the contact to nhtsa. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 107,000.
Electric steering stopped working just like the recalled 2011 & 2012 fusions but the 2010 was not recalled. ford reset the codes and it happened again. multiple other error codes had them replace other parts for $600 but the electric power steering kept faulting every few days after a reset so they replaced the defective electric steering part for $2400. no problems since. why wasn't the 2010 recalled too?
Driving 2010 ford fusion sel v6 home at night at around 70 mph, suddenly message came up "advance track , service power steering now". we had seen this message before. this is the fifth occurrence. the vehicle maintains its steering ability (going 70 mph), but upon arrival at our destination, and the shut off of the engine, all power-steering assist is lost. this has happened five times before. the ford dealer can clear all of the error messages and the car will have its power steering ability again; however, when the ford mechanic diagnosed the error messages and the problem, his solution was to replace the electrical rack and pinion steering assist at a cost of $1200 plus labor. i declined, as i am sure that the problem will recur. how do i get rid of this car? how can i sell it and not declare its ugly persistent problem?? why doesn't ford act on this? the mechanic stated that he didn't know of any other cars with this problem.
driving home from the store the service power steering now light came on. power steering went out . my wife and son were also in the car, luckily we were able to make it home without issue. reading online it turns out this is a very common and expensive issue with other ford owners and needs to be addressed by ford immediately.
Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford fusion. while driving approximately 5 mph, the steering wheel seized while pulling into a driveway. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 138,000.
I was pulling out at an intersection and the power steering went out causing me to have to drive it in a ditch. i was so upset. it almost caused me to hit head on with another vehicle. apparently lots of people are having this problem and it should be recalled. i am so upset.
Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford fusion. the contact stated that while driving at 45 mph, the power steering seized and became difficult to maneuver when making a right or left turn. the failure recurred numerous times. the vehicle was taken to a dealer, but was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 91,000.
My power steering is out in my car. it says power asset fault and then it will say service autotrack. i am not the only one i have looked everywhere and there is a lot of people having the same problems that i'm having. it should be recalled. i will tell everyone i know not to get a ford unless this problem gets recalled. i don't have the 2000 to fix my car.
Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford fusion. when the vehicle was started, the power steering failed. the vehicle was taken to the dealer who stated that the power steering module needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired. the failure mileage was 82,000.
Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford fusion. while driving approximately 40 mph, the power steering failed. the vehicle was driven to the dealer, but was not diagnosed or repaired. the failure recurred multiple times. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 120,000.
I was driving home from work (70 or so miles away from where i live) at about the halfway point i heard car ding and a warning popped up on my dashboard saying "powersteering assist fault" and "service advancetrac" and right away i immediately could feel the steering wheel being unable to turn. i was going 50 miles an hour and as soon as the warning popped up my steering wheel became nearly impossible to turn. i went right into a field as the road turned into a curve and the steering wheel was too hard to turn. i went off the road and into a field. no air bags went off and i slammed my head into the steering wheel. after the shock of what happened i shut my car off and called my fianc crying freaking out as i was still another 40 or so miles away from home. my head hurt but i did not relieve medical attention. he told me to calm down and he would see if there was anything on the internet about this issue with my car. and he found out it is an ongoing issue with many people. he told me to leave my car off for a while and turn it back on. when i did the powersteering worked again and after taking a few deep breaths i was able to get out of the field and rice the rest of the way home without any more incidents that day. 2 days later on may 12th 2015 the powersteering failed again and has since continued to not work. i was inches away from going into a guardrail at 65 mph before i slammed on the breaks and pulled the wheel to the left as hard as i could to get away from the guard rail, thankfully there was no car coming in the left lane.
I was traveling down the highway around 60 mph and the power assist check message came on. i stopped in the next town and shut car off. when i restarted i said to check system now and had no power steering whatsoever. since i was 1.5 hours from home i tried driving for about 20 miles and decided that was enough as there was very little control of car. ended up having someone come pick up car a trailer it home.
Electric power assisted steering (epas) failed
My vehicle's power-steering got disabled out of nowhere apparently i'm not the only one with this issue, i get an error on the driver panel saying to service power steering now.
I turn on my ford fusion 2010 ' i was leaving my garage in a reverse mode when the direction wheel stuck no opportunity to move in any direction, was stiff one message appears on my front display power stering assit fault i put again my car on parking, turned off wait for 5 minutes and restart the car again, message displayed was erased and direction wheel released, i don't feel comfortable that this problem can happened again when i am driving on the i-35 north
The steering went out in the vehicle january 2014, power steering went out with no warning. the repair shop stated that the steering rack needed to be replaced and would cost about $2000.00. they also made mention the power steering with the ford fusion's have had alot of problems in this year. once again may 4th , 2015 23,000 miles later, i felt the steering wheel binding and locking. my service power steering now indicators came on. ford claims when you loose power steering the car will go into a manual mode. this is true to some extent. you are fighting to steer the car because you are fighting with the gears in the rack. the steering locks and i almost crashed several times to get to a safe location, i went into oncoming traffic, because the steering locked. i had the car take to ford dealer for repairs and was told the steering rack was bad again, and once again had to make repairs. there is no resaon i should of had to put two steering racks in within 20,000 miles. the recall done was for 2011 vehicles. the nhtsa needs to look into the 2010 models. the company i work for owned 5 ford fusions all the same model, we have all had the same problems.
A couple of months ago the power steering fault light came on when i put it into gear and went to move the vehicle. so i put it back to park waited a min then restarted the car. after doing so the light wouldn't reappear for a week or two. then it would do it again. so i checked the fuses being its electric power steering and no blown fuses. then it would happen about every week. the user manual stated that without the power steering it would not harm the advance trac. this is not the first car ive driven without power steering(also a ford). the advance trac light would apear after another month and only when the power steering light was on. which is now every time i start the car.so i took it to the ford dealership were they gave me a quote for the gear asy part# ae5z-3504-de. this car is not old, very well maintained with appropriate maintenance. this should not be happening and i fear the car is not going to turn when needed to avoid hazards and other needed situations while driving.
Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford fusion. while driving approximately 45 mph, the steering wheel seized. the failure recurred multiple times. the vehicle was taken to a dealer for diagnostic testing. the contact was advised that the steering gear needed to be replaced and programmed. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 105,000.
Vehicle was being driven approximately 45 mph when suddenly the power steering failed and the vehicle became very difficult to steer.thankfully there was not an accident or fatality from an accident. have been told the power steering control module and rack will need to be replaced. the estimate was $1500.00. the vehicle is outside of the warranty, so i will have to figure out how to pay for a safety item that ford obviously knows about. *tr
As i was driving down a city street in heavy traffic, the power steering went completely out. the power steering assist fault came on after the incident. *tr
I was driving about 25-30 mph in the busy streets of van nuys california, i had my entire family in the car as we were going to eat dinner. as i approached the parking lot from the street, the "vehicle dynamic control off indicator light" turned on, then immediately right after a message on the dashboard popped up and read "power steering need service". as soon as i tried to turn into the parking lot the power steering went out, i had to use all my strength to pull the steering wheel and avoid crashing into the cars exiting the parking lot (the cars were waiting to make a right, into the main street van nuys blvd). i can usually muscle a car without power steering, if it were a traditional oil pump, but the electrical system was almost impossible to turn. luckily i made the turn without incident or injuries, but this is definitely something ford has to address. there are many situations i can imagine where this power steering failure may lead to property loss, injury or even death. the power steering gave no warning, i looked up how to fix this problem online, only to find that hundreds of people had experienced the same exact problem, i also noticed that all their posts were within the last month, so this problem is not uncommon. ford must address this problem asap in order to avoid injury or death, they should have noticed this in the testing phase of fusion production. thankfully my family and i are ok, but now i have to find a way to work and come up with $1800+ for repairs. *tr
Car was driving fine. when i was leaving destination, i was backing out warning light came on epas failure light. power steering was out very hard to steer. shut car off, restarted car, light was still on no power steering also advancetrakc light came on. could have went out at any given time all at once. very expensive to fix. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford fusion. while driving, the steering wheel became extremely difficult to maneuver and the power steering assist ability was lost. the contact stated that the vehicle failed to restart and the power steering assist fault and service advancetrac warning indicators illuminated. the vehicle was taken to autonation ford memphis (2515 mt moriah rd, memphis, tn 38115, (901) 209-1259) where it was diagnosed that the electric power assembly needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the contact referenced nhtsa campaign number: 15v340000 (steering). the manufacturer was notified of the failure and did not assist. the contact was informed that he would receive a call back, but he never received one. the failure mileage was 116,022. *tt *tr
For months i have been resetting my cars "power steering assist fault" by turning my car off and turning it back on and the power steering would suddenly work again. last night my car took a couple turns on and off for it to work which is the first time it took more than once to reset. today after church i turned my car on and off 10 times and it still wouldn't reset so i was forced to drive my car home with no power steering, thinking about the fact that if a car served or a kid ran out in front of me, i wouldn't be able to swerve to avoid them. besides the fact that i can't drive my car to get to and from work this way, i don't have 1500 dollars to fix a problem that should be recalled in my 2010 ford fusion as well as the 2011-2012 years. this problem is obviously a result of faulty equipment used in manufacturing and not because of the driver.
I had a flat tire, i drove a couple of blocks on a residential road to get to a safe area to change tire, two sensors went off , low tire pressure, and power steering sensor, at this point it became to steer vehicle, power steering sensor remained on, even after restarting, and changing the flat tire . i took it to pat miliken ford dealer, located on telegraph rd. 4/16/2015 the mechanics there reset the computer, to no avail, power steering sensor now needs to be replaced, i was charged $1,872.05 for that repair,i have had many flats in life but none this exspensive. i noticed that there was a electronic power steering failure recall notice: date opened 10/02/2014 recall#15v340000 , date closed:09/10/2015, yet i never received any notice, my vehicle is registered, no change in address. when i had reviewed rather or not there was a recall for power steering issues at time of my flat tire i could not find any, but found a lot of complaints. i did contact the news , because based on the complaints i was seeing, i thought how dangerous, i had gotten this car for my daughter to drive, and i was ignorant to your existance how do i get ford to reimburse me for this very expensive flat tire. my vehicle is now at pat miliken for a gas leak! i am hoping you can help, i was not sure where else to file a complaint.
I was stopped at a 3 way stop. as the car started moving i could not steer the car. when i finally stopped the car i was partially in a someone's yard with a culvert and telephone or electric pole only 2 or 3 feet from me. i thought the car had gone dead. i tried to crank the car only to realize it was still running. i then put the car into reverse and backed out. that was when i realized the steering was the problem. the advance track system then came on. after reading the manual i was hoping that it was due to us having put new tires on the week before. when we took the car to our mechanic he said that ford would not sell the part and we would have to take it to a ford dealer. needless to say it is costing $1700 to repair this. there was a new motor put in the vehicle when it was 2 1/2 years old. it also went out with no warning whatsoever and ford told us this was the second car they had this happen to. *tr
I was driving, and the car chimed a couple of times and the power steering immediately stopped working. the service power steering system now reading and advance trac reading started to show. ford says it has not had any major issues as per 2 ford service dealerships. i went to college for automotive and worked as a tech for ford and i know power steering randomly going out is a safety issue. we were fortunate to not have any injuries, but this issue almost got us into a wreck. i will not pay ford to fix a dysfunctional part that they installed. paying ford to fix the problem is like paying a serial killer to sharpen your knives before he/she decides which knife to stab you with.
I was traveling during clear conditions, approx. 45 mph, when suddenly the power steering turned off and nearly caused me to crashed my car. i had received a check steering and advancetrac light when i first turned on the car, then 20-30 minutes into my trip the power steering failed and i nearly lost control. this is a very dangerous piece of faulty equipment that needs to be addressed. ford needs to be held accountable for this. it should not take over 500+ complaints to warrant attention. however, had i been in a fatal crash i'm sure that would attract more attention. *tr
Upon exiting the highway and coming down the ramp the dash displayed a message to "service power steering now" then a message to "service advancetrac". the power steering went completely out and i had to use much force to turn the steering wheel. contacted the dealership service department to setup a service appointment. i have the 6 year, 100,000 mile warranty, but was informed that this was not covered under that warranty. was told that i would have to pay out of pocket to have the car diagnosed and repaired. *tr
My son was driving me on the interstate at about 70 mph. without any warning, the power steering went out. i am glad he was driving as i had heart surgery a while back and it is very difficult for me to drive this car now. there is also no way that my wife can drive it. every time i get in the car, i pray that i do not pull something in my chest because it is very difficult to steer. i have a $32000 car that is a piece of junk. i called ford and they just as well to say tough luck. they have no plans to fix it. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford fusion. while driving at 65 mph, the steering wheel became difficult to turn. the contact had to apply force to the steering wheel in order to turn the vehicle. the traction control warning light illuminated. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic. the mechanic diagnosed that the power steering rack needed to be repaired. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 57,682.
When driving the power steering system stops and it makes it impossible to make a turn left or right. i called the dealer and it will cost me about $2,000 out of pocket to repair. error message is, "power steering failure". *tr
I was driving and service power steering soon and advance trac lights suddenly came on. when i arrived at my destination, i turned off the car and then turned it back on and dash message appeared saying to service power steering now. i went to turn the steering wheel and i could not turn the steering wheel at all. i then had vehicle towed to dealer. dealer notified me that the power steering rack needed to be replaced at a cost of $1600. i had no prior issues with the power steering prior to this sudden, unexplained incident. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford fusion. the contact stated that the power steering warning lamp illuminated and the vehicle had a sudden loss of power each time the failure recurred. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer for further inspection and diagnostic testing. the vin was not available. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 70,000.
Power steering assist is not working
Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford fusion. the contact stated that the fuel inlet warning light illuminated. the contact also stated that the check engine warning light illuminated. the vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the fuel tank failed. the vehicle was not repaired. while driving approximately 5 mph, the steering wheel seized and required excessive force. the contact stated that the power steering assist fault message appeared on the dashboard. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failures. the approximate failure mileage was 82,000.
While driving "service power steering and service advance track" came on. i stopped the car thinking we had time and when i got back behind the wheel i had no power steering. i was able to navigate to the dealer where i was told i had low tire pressure in right front wheel causing the system to shut down. no message on dash regarding low tire pressure. very concerned for safety we live in the mountains and this could have been a disaster if we were on one of our famous one lane s curve roads. *tr
The car has been trying to change lanes by itself for 2 weeks now, steering wheel jerks by itself while driving, had a total failure of electronic power steering as my wife pulled in the driveway which almost resulted her in hitting a vehicle. *tr
The power steering failed making the car difficult to steer. *tr
Driving in rural neighborhood. pulling into driveway slightly downhill when steering became very difficult to operate. thank goodness no children were in the area as usual. this steering issue will become a fatal flaw with the ford fusion when someone with less strength is involved. lucky it was a full grown man in the seat and not my daughter. this needs recalled before we lose a life over profit. an ounce of prevention is worth injury to anyone. *tr
The steering assist failure message came onto the dashboard, and the power steering failed. i restarted the vehicle several times, and it did not reset. *tr
This is the second incident i had with my steering. the entire steering rack was replaced 2 months ago. i paid $1800, only for this to happen again. i was driving on a busy road, and then suddenly assist power steering appeared. it was a straight road so i didn't realize that the steering had locked and i was unable to get into the turning lane. i was driving and stuck on a main rod. it felt like my brakes were out. i had no idea what to do. i kept driving and eventually used every ounce of strength to pull over the vehicle on a busy road. not only did i feel like endangered because of the steering but because of where it happened i thought someone was going to hit me or my car while i was waiting on the side road for a tow truck. this part has a defect and needs to be corrected. this is the second steering rack in 3 months. *tr
My ford fusion se with 4 cylinder, with electric power steering suddenly stop working. i could not turn my wheels to the right or to the left. it just froze and stuck. i could not drive my car at all. i just could move forward and backward but cannot drive it at all. it is very dangerous to drive that car. i felt that ford company is responsible for that repair. my ford fusion has broke down twice prior to that power steering problem. the transmission broke down under warranty around 20,000 miles and was covered by the warranty. but the second time, the transmission broke down again around 40,000 miles on it and i have to pay for transmission repair even though it was under warranty. ford do not cover wearable parts but i believe that they are responsible for them. i had to pay close to $2,000.00 to fix that transmission. now third time ford fusion have another serious problem with power steering. i called gary crossley ford and they said i will have to pay another $2,000 dollars to fix just the power steering. ford fusion has so many problems like door latch that came out. and other electric problems appearing again and again without any explanation. please ask ford company to cover the power steering repair. sincerely, [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr
