We have classified the 1266 complaints from 2010 Ford Fusion about STEERING into the following categories.
While traveling home from school recently, my son, experienced without warning a sudden and total failure of the electronic power assisted steering on the 2010 ford fusion that we purchased for him to use at collage in the fall. fortunately, he was on a straight stretch of road and not in the middle of one of the many winding curves he travels on his way home from school. also, fortunately (for ford motor co.) he was not meeting another car in one of those curves. being an inexperienced driver and faced with the sudden and total loss of such a critical system; (such as power steering) the outcome quite possibly could have been catastrophic. furthermore; it would appear the problem is systemic in nature, plaguing not only ford motor co., but other auto makers as well. it is my opinion that the world is not yet ready from an engineering standpoint, to allow electronics to replace critical yet mechanically simple systems whose possible failure can be life-threatening. consider also that due to the structure of all corporations, the motivation for any change in system engineering can only be profit based. the consumer should in no way be forced to bear the cost, financial or otherwise, for simple engineering mistakes which appear to be based on profit rather than sound engineering practices. *tr
I have been pulling out of my driveway and the car will start beeping, screen on dashboard says power steering assist fail your steering wheel locks you have to shut off the car then turn it back on and it is fine. this has happened pulling out of stores, work, and my house multiple times. yesterday driving down the road at 45 mph it starts beeping and i can't turn!!!!! thank god no one was behind me as i have to come to a stop on a road and shut it off and turn it back on. i have 3 small children and this isn't safe. i will be contacting everyone i can. ford needs to recall this and fix my car.

Ford fusion power steering problem. our 2010 ford fusion 2.5l power steering stopped working without warning. only has 42400 miles on it. i am seeing many posts online relating to this problem with only temporary solutions. since this site targets safety concerns i think it would make sense to try to fix this issue before people end up getting injured, or worse dead due to loss of ability to handle the vehicle. i hope it doesn't take a tragedy or multiple before something is finally done about this growing problem. i doubt the 500+ filed complaints on ford fusion on this site represents the total number of incidents that are actually taking place. if this is just a numbers game then there will never be incentive for the manufacturers to do a better job as a mass recall is a lot more expensive than a few legal payouts. please do something about it. it's not like we're complaining about a faulty radio. this is about steering the vehicle. also, consumers are spending significant amounts of money without the problem being fixed. ford says "warranty is over". so i am at the mercy of the dealers, whom apparently do not have a solution. since ford does not know what's causing this common issue, and the dealers cannot figure it out, then who is left to solve the problem? ford should be forced to solve the problem and provide a warranty extension. *js

On 1-30-15 while driving through my neighborhood i received a message on the display screen it read service advancetrac and power steering assist fault, i then lost all power steering in the car. so when i got home i looked up the display messages to see that they were about. i saw that its a power steering issue and need to go to the dealer. so on 2-4-15 i took my car to the local ford dealer to see what was the exact issue on the car. i was told the steering gear was bad and needed to be replaced. parts and labor will be $1,600. once i came home from the dealer and started to look up more about this issue and saw that is a huge issue with ford and they haven't made any recalls or attempts to try and correct this issue with these cars. they are only correcting the issues with car that haven't been built yet. i drive a 2010 ford fusion. *tr
Started the car in the morning and noticed the advancetrac notification on and soon as i turned the wheel it was extremely hard and took all my strength. when i went to pull forward i nearly jumped the curb because i wasn't able to turn the wheel fast enough. i can no longer work as my requires me to drive all day. and don't have the funds $1400-2000 estimated cost of fix. i've seen numerous videos and complaints of the same problem. this needs to be addressed before it becomes fatal. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2010 ford fusion. the contact stated that while driving at 50 mph, the steering wheel seized as the power steering warning light illuminated. the vehicle was not taken to a dealer. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 50,000.
The steering wheel fault assist alarm comes on when i try to start the car and there is no power steering and all i have is manual steering and popping.
my daughter was driving my 2010 ford fusion which suffered a loss power steering. the vehicle had an error message that came on the dashboard, displaying "service advance trac" and "service power steering now". power steering light after the low tire light appeared this occurrence also appears to be similar to what others have experienced . this is a safety issue that can cause loss of control while driving and turning. *tr
1. the power steering went bad in dec. 2014/ cost $1600 to fix. done at crossroads ford in kearney ne. 2. less than 1 month later in jan. 2015, the transmission started leaking fluid and had other issues with shifting. looks like now i'll have to put in a new transmission. 2010 ford fusion se with 109,000 miles. *tr
Power steering failed completely without warning. vehicle was nearly impossible to steer. without my upper body strength their would have undoubtedly been a crash. even with my upper body strength, which is considerable, an accident was narrowly avoided. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford fusion. while driving 15 mph, the steering wheel seized and the power steering warning light illuminated. the vehicle was taken to a dealer for diagnostic testing. the power steering gear and rack and pinion assembly was replaced. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 89,000. ma 08/10/15 updated 8/14/15*js
This issue happens often. it has happened in neutral, first and second gears. i will either be stationary or driving and the power steering assist will fail and throw up a fault on my dash. at that point it is impossible to turn the steering wheel causing me to not be able to control the car.
Just made it home from work and picking up my son from school. i put the car in reverse, began backing out the driveway, when the warning light came on and power steering went out simultaneously. 2010 fusion under $50k miles. my car is at the dealership now. *tr
My son was running errands. he went inside a store & when he got back in the car the service power steering now light was illuminated as well as advance trac. he called home & said he tried to back up but could not get the steering wheel to turn. we left the car parked & had it towed to a ford dealer on monday a.m. i went on the internet to see if i could find out what kind of repair might be needed & how much it would be. i was shocked to find out that there was a class action lawsuit against ford for the exact steering failure my ford fusion had experienced. i am thankful my son was not driving at the time the steering failed. however, i am very concerned at this time because i own a 2nd 2010 ford fusion which my other son drives. i bought both my sons a ford fusion awd because i wanted them to have a safe vehicle. ford should be ashamed for not informing owners of this potential power steering failure. they should be made to replace the faulty steering before a serious or even fatal accident happens as a result of their negligence. i had to pay $1750.00 dollars to have the power steering replaced & the advance trac fixed. the ford dealer knew of the problem with the fusion but said ford would not pay for the repair. i have always done the required preventative maintenance on my cars & keep them in perfect condition. i had to put the full amount on a charge card, which now i will pay interest on. i don't have the financial ability to pay for or even "charge" another $1750.00 to replace the power steering on my other 2010 ford fusion. i am scared to death something will happen while my other son continues to drive what seems to be a "steering failure ticking time bomb" as he needs a car to get to work daily. ford needs to fix this...quickly! *tr
Our 16 year old daughter was driving in town on saturday on our icy roads when suddenly the power steering failed. as a relatively new driver she had no idea what happened but was able to maintain control of the car and get it parked. from the description of the sensors it appears to be a electric power assisted steering (epas) failure. in looking through the internet this appears to be a relatively common problem on the ford fusions of this era. *tr
I was driving around a curb doing 55 mph and all the sudden the steering went out. way beyond manual steering, extremely hard to handle. it went off the road and almost caused an accident. i have found this is a common problem. the electric steering box is a problem and now i can barely drive it. my wife has no chance of using the vehicle.
Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford fusion. while driving 10 mph and making a right turn, the steering wheel seized as the power steering assist warning light illuminated. the contact turned off and restarted the vehicle; however, the failure persisted. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the rack and pinion needed to be replaced. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was approximately 65,000. updated 03/08/16*lj consumer stated 2010 excluded from original recall but need to be included, multiple failures over last few months. steering failed & alarms while driving/turning. failure code u2011 internal gear failure updated 05/23/18*jb

I was driving my 2010 ford fusion when the power steering just gave out on the entrance the highway. there is no explained problem with ford on why this is happening, but from what i understand this is an on going safety investigation with nhtsa. ford should address this safety issue before someone gets badly hurt. *tr
Electric power steering went out while driving on state highways, making it almost impossible to drive, steer to a safe place just to prevent a head on collision.without any warning driving and out of nowhere electric power steering goes out while in a curve i can guarantee you the average driver will end up in a crash, possibly dead. i was only lucky no one was coming towards me. cost was around 1,200$ at ford dealership. i'm not sure the date of the incident, it was over a year ago.
Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford fusion. the contact stated that the steering wheel failed while driving in reverse. the driver was able to restart the engine and regain normal steering function. the failure was experienced several times. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for diagnostic testing, but was unable to locate a failure code. the manufacturer was notified. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 114,000.
While driving 30mph the advancetrac system flashed on the that dash board. as a result i lost all power steering control and almost ran head on to an ,on coming vehicle as i was making a right hand turn. took the vehicle to dealer to get repaired ($1249.40). this all occurred on 12/15/2012. the second incident happened on 12/27/ 2014. as my family was traveling 70mph down i44 near joplin, missouri. the advancetrac system flashed on the dash board and once again i lost all power steering control. in doing so the vehicle took a hard right almost putting my vehicle underneath a tractor tailor. i was able to get the vehicle under control and limped the vehicle back to my home. the fault in this vehicle almost killed me and my family , this is a on going problem with this vehicle around the nation. how many fatalities is it going to take before the nhtsa forces the ford motor company to recall the vehicle's and fix the problem. thank you for your work , in getting this problem resolved. *tr
I was driving my 2010 ford fusion while on vacation. i was driving my family to breakfast and i noticed that an error message that came on the dashboard, displaying "service advance trac" and "service power steering now". while these messages came on, my power steering became difficult to steer while i was driving on the roadway. i was luckily able to manage steering off of the highway, turning in to our destination. knowing the difficulty that i had in trying to steer to safety, it scares me to think that my wife could have been driving this vehicle and may not have fared as well as i am much stronger than she. while out of state, it was very pressing that i get the power steering repaired for the safety of my family. i had to manage steering to the nearest ford dealer, for which i was unfamiliar with. i had to spend $1,500+ for the repair, along with the cost and need for a rental vehicle. after the dealership replaced the steering gear, my steering failed again. after returning the car to the same dealership, their suggestion was that "if this fails again, you should take the vehicle to your home dealership for repair." i had to drive home, over 600 miles without power steering as i had no other options. when the failure occured, my fusion had only a couple hundred miles over 75,000 miles. i can safely say that this steering failure caused a lot of undue stress over this vacation, along with a substantial level of danger. it is also very troubling to know that the same manufacturer that produced the steering in my vehicle, has also produced the steering that has failed in other ford vehicles, such as the newer ford explorers (2011 year+, i think). *tr
The power steering went out where i wasn't able to steer the car. i had to pull over and not drive it or i could have had a reck. *tr
When driving home with my baby i noticed i wasn't able to turn the steering wheel to move over in the other lane. i had to stop my car in the middle of the street and have someone come to help me get my car to the side of the road. there was not any warning of anything being wrong with my car. the power steering went out in the car. i called the ford dealership and spoke to the head of the service dept and he confirmed the cost would be about $1600.00 to repair but couldn't be for sure until i get a diagnostic check done for $89.99. he was aware of the issue and stated his own daughter in law had the same problem that is how he is pretty sure what the issue is and the cost to repair. i asked about a recall and he had not heard of anything as of now. i'm a single mom and can't afford this repair. i feel like ford should pay for the faulty part with especially with the number of complaints. if i hadn't had control at the time the situation could have been a lot worse. i'm praying that ford will take responsibility and fix my car as i'm currently without transportation. *tr
While driving, a traction light came on, some warning beeping and it said service power steering and auto trac. steering wheel got really hard to turn and had to drive it in to mechanic. *tr
While driving to a friends house, the power steering just went out. the vehicle was almost impossible to steer though it was able to be driven off the side of the road. had it taken to the nearest ford dealership and they stated that it was a power steering failure that would cost 2000 to repair. *js
I had a problem with my power steering wheel wit a ford fusion 2010 i investigate end found that 2009 to 2011 have a power steering wheel problems that cost 1600 to fix it there's 1000600 complains about this and ford needs to change all the power steering wheels end there's being a lot of accidents when people are driving on the freeway when the power steering brake down they should make ford fix this problem like they made chrysler i don't know know how much people are going to die until you guys fix this. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford fusion. while driving approximately 45 mph, the steering wheel became very difficult to steer and was unable to turn causing damage to the electric motor and the front tires. the vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the steering wheel electric motor needed to be reprogrammed and the steering column needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 82,000. updated 7/28/15*cn updated 10/17/2017*cn
The power steering had started to whine on monday morning december 8th. the problem ceased to repeat until this morning wednesday december 10th, the problem came back much worse. the steering wheel feels to lose electronic assistance - at lower speeds it is more noticeable. this has the likeliness to cause a safety issue when on the road and electronic steering malfunctions or does not assist properly. *tr
The advancetrac stability enhancement system's sliding car icon illuminated. i pulled over on a busy interstate and accessed the owner manual. there was no chime or other sound on the vehicle. i read about several potential problems and proceeded the remaining six miles home. when starting the car again, i read the new message, "power steering assist fault," and the power steering did fault, i had no power steering. i managed to drive home. once home after dangerously maneuvering there with no power steering through traffic, i read the owner manual again trying to figure out what was happening. i had just had my vehicle serviced at my ford dealership 3,000 miles before today. they were supposed to top off my fluid levels. once parked in my garage, i turned my engine back on and now i get the message, "service power steering now." after reviewing this online, i see that numerous 2010 ford fusion owners have experienced the same problem putting their lives in jeopardy yet ford motor company has not recalled the vehicles to prevent loss of innocent lives. there is a class action suit currently regarding this matter filed. i will be seeing if i can join. *tr
Got in my car to make my drive home and service power steering now light and advance trac lights came on. stopped at a gas station and upon returning to my car i had no power steering and was forced to drive the 35 mile trip home. called the ford dealer because i am aware that there are recalls on the power steering for these fusions but was advised that my fusion is not included in said recall. i bought this car to have a safe reliable vehicle for myself and family and am quickly regretting it! i do not have the $2000+ dollars that the dealer has quoted me to diagnose and fix this! and i should not have to! ford made this mistake and they need to make it right! *tr
My car started saying power steering warning message ,and the wheel very hard to turn , i went to the dealer ship , where i purchase , he told me he couldn't do nothing , i just purchase my fusion 2010 ford four months ago . *tr

When trying to turn the steering wheel when starting from a stopped position, the power steering was not working and a service advance track warning came on. if i did not have the physical power to turn the wheel, i could have very easily have hit another vehicle. i took the car in for a car wash, and the power steering came back on about 5-10 miles down the road. it went out and back on intermittantly during the next few months. it totally went out somewhere around the end of march or beginning of april. according to "ford power steering failure reports investigaterd by federal regulators/oregonlive.com" dated october 6, 2014 at 8:46 am "ford says it's cooperating with the investigation and anyone experiencing power steering problems with their vehicles should contact their dealer". may 12, 2015 i took the vehicle to the ford dealer and they pulled codes 100410 - unable to communicate with power steering system. checked for powers and grounds, power and grounds ok. referred to interactive vehicle diagnostic. they found power steering module/rack failure. recommended replacement at a cost of #1647.79. they said it was not on the recall at that time. when the mechanic brought the car forward, he also informed me that models produced six months earlier have the old power steering with the fluid. he said i have the electronic one that the newer models have. i recently checked the recall that ford was having on the fusion. my vin # shows 0 recalls. the fusion recall mentions road salt and other contaminants can cause corrossion and breakage. i live in wisconsin and feel that my car should be included in this recall. my wife hauls kids and has a hard time trying to drive this car. for safety sake, i feel it should be recalled and fixed immediately.
Power steering light came on and said to service "now", no warning... steering next to impossible! took it to dealer as are independent garage didn't have access to ford only special codes (apparently and another ford customer rip-off). had to then drive it (near impossible and late at night as to not cause an accident) since we can't afford to tow it to manderbach ford, in reading, pa, was told the work was going to cost $1,700 dollars and when we were told it was fixed, we picked it up that same night and on our way & 1 min into the drive, not even, the light came back on saying to service now and it was as if they did nothing to the car to fix it including the alignment they claim it needed and clearly didn't do!!! so we took it right back and were told they'd be looking/working on it today. what a giant waste of time and $$ so far.. adios ford! i plan to recoup every last penny for this unnecessary inconvenience to me and my family!!!!!!! *tr
We were pulling out of a parking lot and a warning chimed to "service advancetrac" and, simultaneously, i lost power steering while trying to turn. we came to a red light so i tried shutting the car off. upon restart, everything appeared to be working properly. however while driving home the warning came back on, and i continued to lose power steering at random times. driving around curves was especially frustrating, since i would go into the curve without power steering, and it would sporadically resume function, causing me to run off the road twice. we have not driven the car since then. *js
Power steering assist warning light came on after starting engine and pulling out of a parking space. steering wheel very hard to turn, and steering was impossible. shut off the engine, and restarted. the warning light went off, and power steering assist began working again. *tr
While driving down a highway, my low tire pressure light came on and i could tell it was very low due to my ability to steer. i pulled in a gas station and tried to fill the tire with air, but it was blown out on the inside wall and remained flat. i put the spare tire on and when i began to pull away, i realized i had no power steering. warning lights came on in succession for low tire pressure (still?), service power steering and service advancetrac. i was about 40 miles from home and had to drive in slow lanes as steering was very difficult. i read some message boards regarding an investigation into this issue, but can't find a common solution that has worked. some say to just turn off and restart, others are saying they spend $1500+. i am worried that i will spend the money and the problem may still exist as it sounds like many have experienced. i have cleaned the battery, disconnected it as some have said also. still the same for now, will have to take it in. *tr
As i was driving on my way home at about 30 mph my " service power steering/advance trac" warning popped up. immediately i pulled into a 7 eleven to check it out. i turned my vehicle off and back on and the power steering was completely gone. i also noticed my front passenger tire was flat. i had my vehicle towed to the local ford who stated the error message said i need to replace my tires. i asked would that fix the issue and was told i need to get that complete before they can troubleshoot more. currently i have not authorized any work and chose to pick my car up. i'm so disappointed. i've had nothing but problems with this vehicle. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford fusion. the contact stated that the power steering warning light illuminated. the contact mentioned that while driving at low speeds, the steering wheel required additional force in order to steer the vehicle. the vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the power steering control module needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 80,000.
We purchased this car in 2011 and it has been fine until today. i brought my son home from school this afternoon and did not notice any issues whatsoever, but a few hours later when we pulled out of the driveway to go to dinner the steering wheel was extremely stiff, we started getting problem notifications on the console and the entire drive was almost impossible to turn like we needed it to. the steering wheel fought against me the whole time - it was stiff and felt like the power steering was out. it sounded like almost scraping coming from the right side of the car. when we got home to check it out we realized that we didn't know how to handle fixing the problem as there was no reservoir that we could find, so we started googling to find similar circumstances and what was done to correct it. everything we have read says the same thing, and we eventually were led here after reading that there is an investigation into this exact problem. we are extremely worried as this is our family car and don't know what to do at this point. *tr
