Recently reported STEERING problems on 2010 Ford Fusion

Complete loss of steering assist fault. luckily my wife and daughter were parked when this fault popped up otherwise something bad could have happened. 2011 through 2012 fusions have been recalled for the same exact issue. it is completely unfair for me to have to pay for this safety issue.

Power steering assist and check advance trac came on! had to drive home with no power steering. it appears there are several fusions that have the same problem. it cost $1300.00 to fix. ford should reimburse for parts or and at least have a recall on these cars. i was parked when it happened! the power assist has came on before but they couldn't find the problem until it actually quit working. i helped my granddaughter out so she had a way to get to school! who could i contact to see if ford will help with the cost?

My 8 month pregnant wife was driving the fusion and the power steering failed on her. the vehicle was difficult to control and felt very unsafe. the dash reported, "service power steering now." this is the third catastrophic failure with my 2010 ford fusion, you can read more about the problems here: http://fordpowersteering.com/

I was driving on three occasions and turned a corner. my steering locked up causing me to almost get hit from behind. i went to a repair shop to get the power steering added. however, i was told no fluid is necessary. my car has electronic power steering, which may be malfunctioning. ford states my car isn't part of any recall. however, this issue creates a danger when driving.

Was driving on i75 from michigan at highway speeds when i went to change lanes to exit and had no power steering. needless to say this car steers like a very big truck without to power assist.. it also has a power steering assist fault light and service acutrac light. have shut it off and restarted several time fault doesn't clear and steering has not returned!

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford fusion. while driving at 30 mph, the steering wheel failed. in addition, the service power steering and the track warning lights illuminated. in addition, the vehicle stalled. the vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that there was a mechanical failure of the epas steering gear. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 140,000.

I had a low tire not flat i was driving down my alleyway slowly and hit a small pot hole on my way to go get it filled with air at the nearest gas station when all of the sudden i lost all power steering and the alarm came on saying power steering failure or something to that matter i am a big fella i was able to man handle the car to the nearest gas station with no power steering with my 1 year old daughter in the back seat. i then filled the tire manhandled the car to her day care then up the street to the closest auto shop. where i dropped it off. and was late to work having my brother come pick me up i was stressed out of my mind because i read how expensive it was to replace luckily the mechanic had a employee who had dealt with it before and was able to pop the steering column out of the jammed sequence it was in and he said he had seen it over and over again. which cost me about 200 bucks alot better than 2000. however after that my car was not the same come to find out my wheel bearing had failed about 6months later and some arm was bent costing me 800 dollars i believe this was due to that issue i had prior i am pissed about this finding out how many of these cars are doing this. i believe that ford should pay to replace their faulty unsafe steering axel and columns. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford fusion. while driving approximately 10 mph, the steering wheel became difficult to turn after the steering assist and the advanced traction control warning indicators illuminated. the vehicle was restarted, but the failure persisted. the failure recurred each time the vehicle was driven. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 115,000.

While traveling down a curvy back road at 11:00pm, the power steering service now message appeared on my 2010 ford fusion's instrument panel. a mile further down the road, the power steering completely went out forcing me to use every bit of strength i had just to turn the wheel. thank god i was able to get home safely. after doing some research, i found this is an all too often problem with many 2010 fusion owners and knew i needed to file this complaint. shame on ford for not issuing a recall for the power steering yet. how many bodies do they need to rack up before acknowledging there is a "problem"?

As of last thursday, the power steering system had been functioning intermittently. as of yesterday it no longer functions at all. at first, the information display would show "power steering system fault" and the power assist would be gone. so i would restart the car and all would be fine. well yesterday it required 4 restarts before the power assist would work. then on my last time using the car yesterday it went out completely, no matter how many restarts the system shows that message and has no power assist. there is a recall for this very issue for 2011-2012 but the 2010s definitely need to be included as well. it's the same car and 2010 owners are left to pay for the costly repair ourselves while this is obviously a known issue that is being rectified for 2011 and up owners. it's not fair, ford needs to stand behind their product not bury their heads in the sand on this 1 year model.

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford fusion. while driving approximately 70 mph, there was a complete loss of power steering and the warning indicator illuminated. the contact was able to maneuver to the side of the road cautiously and the engine was turned off. after restarting, the failure persisted and the steering wheel was extremely difficult to turn. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 57,000.

My name is [xxx] . i have a 2010 ford fusion. i was driving on september 2,2015 when i went to turn a corner my steering wheel was very hard to turn and it still is. i took it to the ford place to find out what was wrong and they said that it would cost $1800 to fix my vehicle. i thought that it might need some power steering fluid, but they told me that it does not use power steering fluid. i am filing this complaint because i know that there are recalls on the 2011 for a steering problem, and i don't have any power steering at all and would like to know if there have been anymore complaints about this problem with the 2010 ford fusion. thank you [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

I bought a 2010 ford fusion from planet suzuki dealership in 2014. i didn't have any real problems for 2 years. i am leasing this vehicle for $22000. however, in sept 2, 2015 the power steering rack went. i brought it to the dealership to be fixed and they told me there was no warranty on it. my finance company financed the payments of $870 in my weekly payments. the dealership informed me, it would be a new power steering rack put on. but, 3 weeks later the power steering went again. this time the dealership fixed it, because there was a warrant on the part. then 6 months later it went again in june23, 2016. but this time they wouldn't fix it ,cause they told me the warranty was expired, cause i went over 22000 miles. they say they don't no what keep causing it to go out! i feel like if it went out 3 times in 9 months, it should get fixed and not by me again. then i found out there is recall on the power steering rack. however, i don't know if that pertains to my 2010 ford fusion. the dealership did not disclose to me there was any recalls on my vehicle. i can't affordd to pay $2500-$3000 for the power steering for a brand new one to be put on, as well as make my weekly payments on this vehicle. the first time the power steering went out on my i was on the highway, with my daughter and granddaughter, and we almost ended up having an accident.

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford fusion. while turning the vehicle, the steering wheel became difficult to control. the power steering warning indicator illuminated. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the power steering failed. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 123,000.

Power steering locked up, could not turn the wheel in any direction. this happened in a very rural area where there was no phone service to even call for help. i could have died. this is not safe.

My wife was driving home from work when our 2010 ford fusion started pulling hard to the right. she pulled into a tire shop parking lot believing she had a right front tire failure when the information panel said "service power steering now" and "service advance trac, tires were fine. i am very grateful she was no longer on the highway as this could easily have resulted in an accident.

While driving a message appeared on the instrument panel, "have power steering serviced", within a few seconds "have advance trac system serviced" warning appeared. i shut off the car. upon restarting the car there was a total failure of the power steering system. it was impossible to drive the car due to the difficulty of turning the steering wheel. i detected a slight burning smell. the car had to be towed to the dealer. repair invoice states an internal fault of electric power steering. rack and pinion system had to be replaced. mileage at the time was 60,402. if this would have happened on the highway or on a busy road there would have been great potential for an accident.

While on a road trip i received a message that read "power steering assist fault" as soon as i started the car and at the exact same time i lost the power steering. turn out that corroded wires fried the rack & pinion. i had to have it towed over a 100 miles to get it home. ford tried to tell me that the wires were damaged by rodents. they conveniently left out the important fact that my car (built 04/07/2010) was not built with an epas gear heat shield on the rack & pinion. the heat shield would have prevented the wires from incinerating & frying the rack & pinion. ford knew that the lack of the heat shield was a problem and took steps to correct this on the future cars. fusions built after 04/12/2010 had the heat shield added to the rack & pinion. but they have made no attempt to correct the error on the cars built before 04/12/2010 that were built without the heat shield. i am blessed that i was not on the road at the time that i lost my power steering since i was just starting back home on country roads in the middle of the night. in the past 5yrs i have now had 3 potentially dangerous car malfunctions. 1. aug. 2013 - engine shaking. not safe to drive. needed new engine & trans. mounts. 2. oct. 2013 - throttle body failure while in rush hour traffic. 3. aug. 2015 - power steering assist fault.

Steering wheel locked up going down road at about 40 very dangerous if on a curvy road. the light came on and said check power steering then it went out.

2010 ford fusion. when driving through a construction zone, going around a slight bend, my steering wheel got extremely tight. for a second i thought the engine shut down. it took all i had to turn the wheel to avoid hitting the median. i lost all power steering. i am lucky that i was strong enough to be able to turn the wheel to avoid the median. after the complete scare, and thankfully i was the only one in the car, the message came up "power steering asist fault, service advanctrac". i took it right to a ford garage. they told me that the steering rack needed to be replaced at the lovely tune of $1,400. after doing some digging, i found that there has been a recall for the same problem for the 2011+ ford fusions, built in the same plant mine was(mexico). i contacted ford, which is actually precepta, and they told me that the recall is vin specific. i question why the 2010's we not recalled when they are having the same problems.

I am receiving numerous "power steering assistance failure" warnings. it happens upon starting my car and it's now becoming more frequent. the result is a total loss of power steering. i know ford has recalled this item but my year (2010) was excluded. i believe this is a significant enough safety issue to warrant an addendum to the recall to include the year 2010.

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford fusion. while driving at 60 mph, the steering wheel became difficult to turn. the contact had to apply force to the steering wheel in order to steer the vehicle and the service power steering now message displayed across the message board. the tire pressure monitoring system warning light illuminated. the vehicle was taken to a dealer. the contact was unsure about the part that needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 80,000.

While driving my 2010 ford fusion the power steering went out without warning. luckily no one was hurt. at first i could turn the engine off and back on again and the power steering was back. not the case now. now the messege comes up..."power steering assist fault. service advancetrac" no power steering at all. this has happened while i was driving! ++ no recall??? i've researched this and 100's of people have experienced the exact same problem. ford should fix this problem for everyone before someone gets hurt or killed.

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford fusion. while making a left turn at approximately 35 mph, the steering wheel became difficult to maneuver without warning. the vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the rack and pinion needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 42,000. updated 9/28/15 *ln

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford fusion. while backing out of a driveway at 5 mph, the power steering seized and the power steering warning indicator illuminated on the instrument panel. the vehicle was powered off and restarted, which resumed normal operation. the contact stated that the issue recurred intermittently. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the issue. the failure mileage was 82,495.

While driving approximately 30 mph lost all power steering. very hard to steer could have caused a crash. the dash readout said power steering assist failure, service advancetrac. car has only 55,708 miles on it. very dangerous problem when you can loose power steering while driving. thank god there wasn't an accident.

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford fusion. while driving at various speeds, the power steering malfunctioned and the check engine warning light illuminated. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the steering rack needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired. the failure had not recurred. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the vin was invalid. the approximate failure mileage was approximately 71,084.

My 19 year old daughter was driving to college when out of the blue she went to drive around a right hand corner at about 45 mph and the electronic power steering completely failed the car steering was so hard to turn the car didn't make the right hand turn so the car went across the road and up over the curb and almost hit a lady walking her dog no one was hurt but sure could have been the car has no other damage besides the steering and the advance track not working i'm very glad everyone is ok i'm 50 years old and i have never seen anything like this i had to go get the car off the curb and drive it to the ford dealer way hard to do even harder then a older vehicle if the power steering failed something really needs to be done before someone gets killed 42000 miles car is like new and i see well over 500 complaints so far so i would say this isn't just a random problem.

While driving steering locked and service advancetrac light came on. it is happening multiple times almost causing me to crash

My 20 year old daughter and two friends were traveling back from the campground heading back to one of the friends house for the night. they had decided to stop by a coffee shop just around the corner from where they were heading. when she went to make the turn from the highway into the parking lot the car lost all power steering. she managed to get the car into a parking space and no one was injured nor was there a wreck. she stated to me that the car was fine no problems at all until she slowed to make the turn into the parking lot that when the power steering went out and a message came up on the dash along with the traction control symbol. there were no warning signs before the problem accrued just happened at the snap of your finger.

Power steering failure while driving. was extremely difficult to manually steer it into safe place. this also happened to my mother in law and my wife when they were driving. so three incidents total. very unsafe. all three times, the steering worker again when car was restarted

I was going down the road at 25 mph and the steering failed. power steering was going in and out, and was mostly out. i had to pay for a new steering gear assembly - despite the fact that there seemed to be many, many, many vehicle recalls for steering on the ford fusion. the dealership and ford was unwilling to pay for the replacement part and labor. i had to pay a total of $1833.57 for the steering, labor, and for the alignment. i am hoping that i will be reimbursed from the dealer for the the parts.

Driving on i 76 and power steering stopped working a of a sudden. a message came up on the dashboard that said "check advancetrac" " service power steering". the dealer said it's a problem with the computer module and i need a new rack and pinion which will cost me over $1800.00. there has been numerous complaints about the power steering for ford fusion and even recalls regarding the issue on 2011 through 2015, but since my car is a 2010 and is not part of the recall i have to pay out of pocket. it is a major safety concern. when my power steering went out i could barely make turns and had to get a man on the street to park my car because i didn't have the strength to. my 1 year old son was in the vehicle with me when this happened. my car is 5 years old and only has $33000 miles on it and ford refuses to help me with this expense at all. they are a terrible company who only cares about saving money. they are not even concerned about their customers safety and how this can cause accidents. sorry ford all of us don't have $1800 to shell out on repairs that are something that should of never happened in the first place. do not buy a ford fusion! also do not take your car for repair at john kennedy ford in conshohocken, pa.

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford fusion. while driving at any speed, the service advance traction and service power steering now warning lights illuminated and the power steering seized. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the manufacturer was made aware of the failures. the approximate failure mileage was 120,000.

While making a right hand turn, after stopping at a traffic light, an alarm sounded and a notification popped up saying "service advancetrac" and there was a complete loss off power steering. as i have done in the past when this issue has occurred, i shut the car off and then restarted it and the problem and notification were gone. moments later while driving on the highway the exact same problem happened again. i pulled off to the shoulder, restarted but this time the problem persisted. now after 3 restarts the problem remains and my car remains extremely difficult to steer safely. updated 12/21/2015*js

This morning i drove my 2010 ford fusion without incident. went out later the same day and had the power steering and advance trac service messages appear less than a mile after i started driving. i went 3 or 4 more miles and had the power steering message go to service power steering now!. in the span of 4 miles i went form no issues to having no power steering and barely being able to keep the car on the road. looking on line several other people have experienced the same issue. this is extremely dangerous if a less experienced driver or someone not as strong as i was would have been driving there could have been a major incident. please look into this problem before someone gets seriously hurt.

Once i pulled out of my apartment parking lot heading to work, the dashboard indicated that i need to "service power steering soon". as i proceeded further, the dashboard message indicated that i needed to "service advancetrac". the steering worked well during the commute to work. once i got to work and parked, i shut off the engine. when i started the engine, the message on the dashboard replied "service power steering now" and it was very difficult to turn the steering wheel. in the past three months, the power steering has stayed in the same condition. no better, no worse. furthermore, this incident is more suspicious considering the fact that ford has issued recalls on 2011-2014 fusions for this issue.

My wife was driving the ford fusion and an error for "service power steering" came up on her dashboard. she still had power steering and was able to make it to work and park. upon leaving work, she turned the car on and realized the power steering was completely gone. she could not drive the car because she could not efficiently turn the wheel. i had to go pick her up and at which point i realized i could attempt to steer the car. i was able to make the commute home safely, although the drive was a struggle the entire time. we took the car to a ford dealership. they were unaware of any common issues. they diagnosed the car needing a new rack and pinion unit (the epas unit). we replaced the rack and pinion, not through ford because they wanted $1800 we did not have. and the issue is still present. the car not safe to drive. it has been a real inconvenience for my family. the car is 5 years old and this is a major issue. and we still have 3 years left of payments on something that is currently not drive-able....//. updated10/27/15 *bf updated 12/05/2017*cn

Power stering went out on 2010 ford fusion. dash notifications: service advance trac & power steering assist fault. seeing too many posts on the same issue.

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford fusion. immediately after starting the vehicle, the power steering light illuminated on the instrument panel and the power steering seized. the failure recurred four times. the vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was diagnosed that the power steering needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 130,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford fusion. while driving at various speeds, the power steering assist warning indicator illuminated and the steering wheel seized. the failure recurred numerous times. the vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was repaired, but the failure recurred. the repair details were unknown. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was approximately 120,000.

While driving my 2010 ford fusion into parking lot, the service advance trac warning appeared. i parked and went into a store. after shopping, i was ready to back out of the parking space and couldn't. i had no power steering and the warning light said "service power steering now". i had my young daughter and my mother with me, so thank god we were already in a parking lot and not in traffic or at a higher speed!! (i'm also so thankful my newly licensed son wasn't driving down the highway when this happened.) i had to leave my car there since it's not safe to drive and call for a ride. i will be taking it for service on monday, most likely by tow truck. i have found many other cases online just like mine where the exact same thing has happened. i can almost bet the problem is the power steering rack. with so many reports, why hasn't ford issued a recall for this? this seems like a very expensive problem and i think ford should have to pay to have it fixed. when i bought this car in 2011, i did not expect to have to worry about major safety issues like this. i really though i was getting one of the safest cars on the market, but apparently not.

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford fusion. while driving at 10 mph, the power steering failed. the instrument panel indicated that the power steering assist failed. the contact turned off the vehicle and restarted the engine and the warning indicator disappeared. the contact was able to drive normally for about two more miles before the failure recurred. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 55,000. updated 8/31/15*cn updated 10/30/2017*cn

Car lost power steering as i was turning, pulled hard right, causing car to hit a small tree. minor damage; cracked headlight lens and front nose piece detached from fenders. the car was restarted and the steering appeared to be fine. however, since this happened, the steering appears to be harder to control and the car has a hard pull when accelerating similar to torque steering. the car never had a problem with torque steering prior to this incident. the car also developed a sway when hitting the smallest road bumps, such as coming off a bridge.

I was driving home from work, had to stop and drop some items off for my daughter at summer camp. when i was leaving camp the steering felt like it wanted to pull to the right, a few miles down the road all power steering was lost. service advanc-trac warning message was being displayed on the dash board. i pulled over at a convenient store to investigate the problem, could not find anything. it was raining so i carefully drove home without any power steering. took car to local dealership where they diagnosed the problem as a rack& pinion failure, total cost to repair $1,641.00. the dealer stated they had not seen this problem before. after a short search i found hundreds of similar problems reported. i read where this same problem initiated a recall on the 2011 ford fusion, but no help referenced to the 2010 ford fusions. if they identified the defect in the 2011 models, shouldn't they fix the problem from the previous models with the advance-trac system. no dealer will touch this vehicle with its defect as a trade-in, meanwhile i'm still paying on a car that i can not drive safely.
