Recently reported STEERING problems on 2010 Ford Fusion

As i was parking my car, the service advancetrac warning message and service power steering message appeared on the dash and i lost power steering. i almost slammed into another car as a lady was attempting to exit the car. luckily my brakes still worked. i see there are a lot of other 2010 fusion owners who are experiencing the same problems. my vehicle has 77,000 miles on it currently and that seems to be in the same range as the other owners at the time of their steering failures. ford really needs to make a recall on this before someone is seriously injured or, worse, killed. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford fusion. while driving approximately 50 mph, the power steering failed and the steering wheel became extremely difficult to turn. the vehicle was maneuvered to the side of the road where the engine was turned off. after restarting the vehicle, the failure persisted. the manufacturer was not notified of the issue. the failure mileage was unavailable.

I'm extremely concerned about the power steering failure that just occurred. the vehicle only has 70,000 miles on it and is regularly maintained by the ford dealership. i was taking my daughter out to drive for her first time and had this failure occurred while she was behind the wheel i'm not sure what would have happened. luckily it was me behind the wheel first otherwise this could have ended tragically. this also appears to be a problem that a number of other ford fusion owners have experienced and a recognized problem in other models that ford has already recalled. please do something before someone is hurt or killed. *tr

Once the car was started a message came on stating power steering needs service and could not turn the steering wheel. also a message about something trac appeared as well. dealer states the steering rack must be replaced at $1800 dollars. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford fusion. while driving 55 mph, the steering wheel seized and required the contact to use excessive force to maneuver. the power steering indicator illuminated during the failure. the vehicle was towed to the contact's residence and was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was notified. the failure mileage was 85,000.

While driving under normal conditions, the power steering system suddenly failed. messages stating "service power steering now" and "service advancetrac" as well. great difficulty turning on the windy road with four kids in car. found numerous complaints online. see other ford vehicles were recalled for same problem. why not fusions? *tr

Was driving to work when the power steering failed on a side street with no warning. i could not turn the vehicle and almost hit another vehicle as i was turning into my workplace. the warning on the dash monitor advised "service power steering soon" and "service advancetrac soon". vehicle acted normal upon restart at the end of the day then on my home did it again on a very curvy mountain road. i was barely able to maintain lane control and get off the road. upon research of the issue it has been confirmed that ford has had thousands of complaints of this issue and no recall has been issued for fusions yet the exact same all electric steering is used in other models that are recalled due to extremely dangerous driving issues. a ford service manager explained to me that system could completely fail at any moment causing a complete loss of steering and i needed to park the vehicle until repaired. he also advised they see it a lot and the repair could cost about $2000. my car is only 4 years old with 136,000 miles on it. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford fusion. the contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the power steering warning light illuminated and the steering wheel was difficult to turn causing the contact to apply excessive force in order to control the vehicle. the vehicle was taken to a dealer, who diagnosed that the electric motor and the rack and pinion needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 28,540.

My wife and i were driving on a surface street, and the power steering and trac warning light came on. the steering immediately was extremely difficult, and required great effort to get the two miles home. i then had the car towed to the ford dealership. they also observed the warning lights and the extreme steering effort required. the car still had the problem even after being shut off and on three times. once the dealership cleared the computer generated warning light, the problem was not able to be duplicated. i requested that they call ford motor to discuss problem, and potential solution. hotline assistance request #107811552 and ro# 376828 dated 9/4/14. ford came back with recommendations on 9/5/14. the dealer kept my vehicle for 7 days, trying to get the problem to re-occur. finally they gave me a front end alignment and sent me home. *tr

Car had a flat tire, then changed to the spare and started to drive it to get a new tire. once i started a dashboard notification came up "service advancetrack" and the power steering was gone. the vehicle was nearly impossible to turn. a mechanic replaced the rack and pinion and reset the warning. a few days later the car alerted the same warning and steering assist was gone, mechanic reset the code and the power steering returned. then 3 days ago, without a flat tire or any notice the power steering went out again making the car nearly impossible to drive again.this time the mechanic said that the code could not be reset due to a component failure.

Was traveling at about 50 mph on side street and the power steering assist light came on and lost all power steering. i am a big man and was not to far from home and was able to muscle it to the driveway. it has sat there since. my wife is slight in stature and if this had happened to her i have no doubt she could not steer the car. *tr

Backing out of my garage, i got just outside the door and went to turn wheel and found that it was locked up, very hard to turn. a warning message came on about steering fault. owners manual told me to shut car off and turn on again to fix the problem. i immediately took it to dealership where i was told i had to leave it for 3 days and had an $1800 repair to replace the rack & pinion. i now find this is a common problem in these cars upon searching internet. car is not old enough to warrant such a costly repair and i'm very glad i wasn't on freeway, trying to change lanes. i contacted ford and was basically told "too bad". *tr

While driving back home to cincinnati, ohio from lexington, kentucky at approximately 60 mph, my steering wheel stiffened up. i am a small frame woman and it was almost unreal for me to guide myself to safety. i frantically jumped out of my car because i saw my whole life flash before my eyes. i called a friend of mines who came to get me and my car and took it to a repair shop. they quoted a price of $2200 for rack and pinion. a four year old car should not be costing me this amount of money so soon especially after reading these forums and seeing that this has been a problem for a while. why hasn't a recall been made for this deadly, life-threatening problem? i have a five year old daughter. what if she was in the car with me?!!! thank god she wasn't. *tr

I was driving to work, i live less than 5 miles away from my work, and i noticed the low pressure light came on, i went on to work where i discovered my tire picked up a nail. i changed the tire during a lunch break and during that break as i drove back to work, the service power steering now notification came on and then the advance track light came on. immediately the steering wheel locked up and was hard to turn left or right. i feel this electronic power steering failure is a faulty part. diagnosis from ford states i need to replace the part due to (friction elements detected by the control module) ($1700) i feel stuck in what to do as i feel nothing was wrong ever with my power steering until the low pressure light appeared. ford needs to recall this as its dangerous and expensive to repair. *tr

Just purchased used 2010 ford fusion se (6cyl). after 2 days of driving, was on the interstate driving approximately 75 mph and the advance trac light came on. i noticed the power steering was getting stiff. shortly after a "service power steering" message appeared and it was extremely difficult for me to control my vehicle. i was able to safely pull off to an exit and turned off the vehicle. after about a minute, i turned the vehicle back on.the advance trac light sensor was off but the message appears "service power steering now". the steering wheel was completely locked up and i was unable to drive the vehicle. the dealer i bought this vehicle from towed the vehicle back to their lot and had the problem diagnosed. they were told by ford that the electric power steering had to be "reset". they "reset" the power steering, the message was cleared and the steering was good. after 2 weeks of driving, again i was on the same interstate going 75 mph and the advance trac light appeared with the message "service power steering." luckily, i was near an exit and was able to safely park my vehicle at a gas station. the dealer again towed the vehicle back to their shop and is waiting to figure out what to do. i find this extremely dangerous and i'm surprised that a recall hasn't been made for this issue on the ford fusions.if you google the problem, you will see multiple forums with people complaining of same issue but all the repairs were different on their ford fusions. either the module was replaced or the power steering rack and pinion was replaced. of course, none are within warranty and were pretty costly.i saw that a massive recall has been made for this issue in the ford escapes. i'm not sure if ford is waiting for multiple fatalities to occur before they address this issue. i hope my complaint helps.please ford... issue recall for the ford fusions power steering! *tr

Started vehicle, steering assist light came on indicating power steering failure. tried to turn steering wheel, extremely difficult. had vehicle towed to ford dealership, cost of repair $ 1706.74. *tr

The car ran ok this morning. i drove for about 10 minutes without issues. then i saw a message indicating "service advancetrac" on the console and it went off by itself a few seconds later. the same indicator came back again and stayed on for some time. i reset the indicator and kept driving. i did not notice any issues with driving then. about 20 minutes later, the console read "power steering assist fault" and right away the steering got very tight. steering was ok until then. i do not recall the "power steering assist fault" indicator going off with a turn as such. it was on a straight road. i pulled over and killed the engine power, opened the door and started the engine up again in about 5 seconds. the indicator was gone and the steering was normal. i started driving and when i made a left turn, the indicator came back again and steering felt very stiff. when the steering gets stiff, it is very difficult to turn and needs a lot of manual force to make any turns or make small changes. *tr

I was backing out of my drive and the power steering assist fault light went on and i had no power steering. on october 14,2014 i again was baking out of the drive when the power steering assist fault light went on again. the light remained on and i took the vehicle to my ford dealer said the steering epas rack and the ce gear assembly needed to be replaced. luckily this failure happened in my drive and not on the highway. *tr

As i was cresting a hill, the engine briefly seized, the power steering failed, and the advancetrac light came on. everything returned to normal two seconds later, except for the advancetrac light. the light turned off after the next start. multiple times thereafter, when the engine has repeated stops/starts in a short span of time, the advancetrac light comes on and there is a loss of power steering. the power steering returns after idling for a couple of minutes. *tr

Electronic power steering failure; never worked again. the car makes a loud popping/ clicking when turning sharply at lower speeds, especially when turning right. *tr

Power steering system went out while driving attempting to make a right turn and it locked up. *tr

Power steering and advance trac went out of vehicle while traveling at approx 50mph almost resulting in severe accident (running off road into ravine on a curve). *tr

Power steering assist problem began to display, stopped for fuel and the car became almost impossible to steer... ford "baugh" dealership in clanton, al interpreted that the power steering module was completely out and the steering assist failed. *tr

Electronic power steering assist system failure. service power steering now, and service advance trac message appeared in message center, and car became nearly impossible to steer. was in early morning rush hour traffic, very scary situation. as a 195lb male in fairly good physical condition, car had no power steering, and i struggled to steer, narrowly avoiding colliding with another vehicle when i attempted a turn. was near service center that works on our company trucks, was able to get it there. technician/shop owner put car on his computer, cleared error codes related to power steering, as his diagnostic computer showed no malfunction in power steering assist system. steering returned to normal, i left his shop, with no real steering issues....until 10/28/2014. same exact thing happened again while i was driving the fusion. messages appeared, power assist failed, making car difficult to steer. returned it to same service center, codes again cleared, steering returned to normal. power steering assist system failed again on 11/12/2014, while i was driving in traffic. my wife, who is barely 5 feet tall, and weighs 125lbs, drives this vehicle often as well, and would definitely not be able to steer the car in the event the power steering failed while she was operating the car. she would probably hurt(if not kill) herself, and possibly others, and this thought horrifies me! it is my understanding that ford has issued no recall on this part, although i am further aware of thousands of complaints very similar to mine. the fact that ford has seemingly "dug their heels in" and will not own up to making a defective part, and thus far has shown no willingness to right this wrong, tells me that they have zero regard for human life! ford is apparently okay with putting owners of their vehicles with this problem at extreme peril! ford should be held accountable! *tr

Power steering went out while husband was turning onto a neighborhood street resulting in hitting a parked vehicle on approximately 8/5/2014. as of today, 5/28/2015, power steering/vehicle has not been repaired and has aggravated/caused neck injury to wife from having to drive without power steering. wife is currently seeing a neurosurgeon as well as pain management for neck pain, compressed spinal cord, bulging disc, spasms. wife is currently waiting on epideral steroid injections. *tr

Complete loss of power steering. not safe! *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford fusion. the contact stated that while driving at approximately 55 mph, the steering wheel became extremely difficult to turn. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who diagnosed that the electronic power assist steering needed to be repaired. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 92,000.

The electric power assisted steering (epas) suddenly fail while driving, resulting in increased steering effort and at times it's will turn way to easy. *tr

Received "power steering assist failure" intermittent warings last month (june) when starting car. took car to dealership, diagnostics /troubleshooting failed to identify problem. problem was consistently cleared by turning off engine and restarting. on 28 july, power steering was lost completely during engine start and successive restarts failed to clear the "power steering assist failure" fault. also received "service advance trac" warning. car was towed to dealership. diagnostics determined the electronic steering rack needed to be replaced. repair estimate is $2000! had car for less than three years and car only had 78,000 on it. (ford certified pre-owned model.) very disappointed with this car. worst ford car i've owned. cursory web searches on this power steering problem reveals a myriad of occurrences for the 2010 fusion. this sudden loss of power steering represents a serious safety issue. it's just a matter of time before this results in fatalities. nhtsa website currently indicates 120 complaints regarding the power steering failure on the 2010 ford fusion (more than 10% of all the complaints against the car). why hasn't there been a recall or tsb issued for this problem? ford experienced a similar problem with the electronic power steering in the escape and recalled over 1 million cars in may. *js

My son was driving and his power steering failed. i took the car into huntington ford and had to have the steering gear replaced. i opened a case with ford customer relations (case # [xxx]) and never heard back from them. i had to pay 1675.18 for the part to be replaced. i found that this is occurring in all ford fusions from 2010 - 2014 models. i feel this is very very dangerous and amazed that a recall has not already occurred! i would like to see action taken against the ford company. if they are ordered for a recall on this part; i would like re-imbursement for what i had to pay for the repair and labor. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

The power steering abruptly stopped working without any prior issues. i took it to the ford dealership and although they have received numerous complaints, they insist there is no recall. they quoted $2000 to repair. it is definitely a safety issue and a quick internet search shows this is a huge recurring problem for 2010 ford fusion owners and there is even a lawsuit against ford. we called ford and they are not willing to take any responsibility. *tr

Power steering suddenly failed with no prior warning while in reverse. electronic power steering rack failed after only 80k miles on car. purchased new from ford dealer. 2nd major issue with this car. the first was the electronic throttle body. this year and model have so many issues. just a quick google search will tell you that. *tr

Traveling on interstate 65 mph power steering failure loss of power assist. steering becoms vary difficult! *tr

I was driving on a side street at 35 mph and hit a large pothole on the passenger front tire. i pulled over and called aaa to change my tire. aaa came and changed my tire, and then when i turned my car back on it said power steering failure. i asked the aaa worker if anything was wrong and he checked everything out and couldn't provide a reason for why the power steering would have failed. the steering was extremely difficult to maneuver and required all of my strength to drive the 1 mile left to my home. i drove the car to the ford dealer the next day and the steering was still very difficult. ford did not provide me with an explanation for why the power steering failed. i paid $1,923.79 to replace the electronic steering gear and perform programmable module installation (code p07ae in pscm). *tr

My power steering light came on and within ten miles of the light coming on the steering wheel would not move at all. i had to have it towed to the mechanic where i was told it needed a new steering rack and that this was a common problem with the ford fusion. it has been thirteen months since then and i need to replace it yet again. twice in thirteen months and when i called the dealer they didn't get back to me. my car shouldn't cost $4400 in thirteen months for the same problem.

Sitting with the vehicle in park, in a parking lot. when the shifter was moved into drive, a power steering fault error flashed in the messaged center along with a "service advancetrac" error. ultimately lost full function of the power steering. the car sat in my drive way while i first tried to see if there was an easy fix i could do myself. after 3 days of sitting in my drive way the cars power steering was mechanically frozen, and i was unable to drive the vehicle at all, even without power steering. i towed the vehicle to a shop where the entire steering rack was replaced, after parts labor and a new alignment the total cost was between 1600 and 1700 dollars. *tr

I was driving on a major road when the power steering maintenance light came on followed by the ad track maintenance alert. i pulled into a gas station and turned off the car for about 3 min. when i turned the car back on the light changed to power steering maintenance now and i no longer had any power steering. i was not able to to drive my car so my husband had to pick me up and drive it home. i read that there are many problems with this system, but i never received a notice for recall. *tr

When my tire pressure gets low -not accompanied by the low tire pressure light- the advanctrac light as well as service power steering light come on the command center. i am able to drive it safely, but the next time that i turn my car on after that, the power steering has always been out. *tr

On the home i was turning onto my neighborhood street, and at a sudden it became difficult to turn. i had to force my steering wheel to the right and come to a dramatic stop to keep from going into the house on the corner. this is an on going problem and i have called the dealership to complain and was told to bring the car in, but because i don't have that $100.00 fee for them to diagnose my vehicle i had no choice but to turn away. my steering wheel has lost power countless of times and my life is in danger. this is my only means of transportation and i cant afford to purchase another vehicle at the time....please please!!!! help i don't want to die or be seriously hurt!! *tr

I was driving to work, on a straight stretch of road at about 25 miles an hour, when a "service advanctrac" warning light came on, as well as a power steering fault. i lost power steering at that point. luckily i was able to pull over into a parking lot, and then i drove home with my hazard lights on. the car was out of warranty so we took it to a local shop, who looked at the codes and the car and diagnosed it as a faulty rack and pinion. they replaced that (at a cost of $1500) and the power steering now works again, but i am not comfortable driving it any longer. what if this happens again while i am turning or merging onto a freeway? scary, scary thought. this needs to be addressed by ford and a recall made. *js

After a advancetrac steering service warning, the power steering failed coupled with a warning to service power steering. the first incident was on or about june 30th. the ford dealer replaced the rack and pinion steering system. subsequently on october 11, 2014 again while driving at low speed, the advancetrac steering system service warning message appeared followed by a loss of power steering and a service power steering warning. the dealer is now indicating that the advancetrac and/or tire pressure sensors may be the cause of the issue. the car is still in the repair shop. *tr

I was driving 45mph then suddenly my steering wheel started going all over car lost control and steering was uncontrollable and really hard. i had to drive really slow to get back home. *tr

The steering issue on the car happened only two weeks after i purchased the vehicle. car became very difficult to steer, thought perhaps for some reason there was no fluid in it. cam to learn that this car does not use a power steering pump, rather it has an electric motor that assists the steering. after doing some searches, i found out that several people have had this issue. contacted the dealer and was told to bring it in to have it checked out, came to learn that the power steering rack had to be replaced to the cost of 1500.00... i am beside myself as i just bought the car!!! this is a recall item, based on all the reports of people having this same issue, ford needs to step up to the plate here and realize they have a problem and bad design to get these components replaced out on these cars before someone seriously gets injured. the car is almost impossible to steer when this goes out and if someone like an older person or younger inexperienced driver runs into this situation the problem is going to cause serious injury... the failure happens without any indications. ford recall the part and fix these cars!!! *tr

While driving at approximately 25 mph, i lost steering. i received a dash warning that i have a power steering assist issue and it needs to be serviced. i luckily made it to the side of the road, turned the engine off and back on and i appeared to have my steering back. i drove home and my husband followed me to the dealership. the dealership looked at it, pulled some codes but they couldn't duplicate the problem. i was told that if it happened again, i would need to "manhandle it" to get it to the side of the road and bring it back to the dealership. i have had the same issue twice today, june 21, 2014. it is as though my steering wheel is locked; it is very difficult to manhandle a locked steering wheel. we researched ford fusion issues and this steering issue seems to be quite common. steering is pretty important: please investigate this issue before someone gets hurt, or worse. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford fusion. the contact stated that while driving 60 mph, the power steering assist warning light illuminated and lost power steering. the vehicle was able to restart an hour later and resumed to normal. the contact mentioned that the failure occurred on three different occasions. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 52,000 and the current mileage was 52,800.

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford fusion. the contact stated that the power steering warning indicator illuminated and the steering wheel became difficult to turn. the vehicle was turned off and restarted. an independent mechanic stated that the rack and pinion needed to be replaced and referred the contact to a dealer to reprogram the computer and repair the vehicle. the dealer stated that the rack and pinion needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the contact stated that the vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 13v232000 (steering). the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 65,000.

I bought my 2010 ford fusion sel v6 with 12000 miles and drive it daily 120 miles/day to work. it has 106,000 miles now. last week, for the third time, the "service power steering now" and "service advancetrac" indicators flashed on while driving 70 mph at night, using cruise control. arrived home safely, next morning, no power steering. drove car to ford dealership, who hooked it up to diagnostic machine, and cleared messages, power steering now functioning again. the second time this occurred the dealership looked at something to do with the wheel on the passenger side. i have not used cruise control with this car since the second episode, nearly a year ago. last week, when the third failure occurred, my friend was driving the car and had activated the cruise control, and i had warned him that i believed there was some relationship factor with using cruise control and the loss of power steering. i drive quite roughly, aggressively, and have hit many bumps with no loss of power steering. during the first and second occurrence the cruise control was activated, a rough spot was encountered, and the "service power steering now -advancetrac" messages came on, with consequential loss of power steering. no mechanical work seems to matter, only effective action is clearing the messages and reestablishing power steering by hooking up to diagnostic machine. i believe it is a software glitch maybe involving a sensor. i am not a mechanic. will the recall/replacement of throttle assembly solve this problem?? ford needs to step up and respond to this problem. *tr

Several incident over the past two years power steering would default, service advancetrac, power steering default would appear on dash. i would turn car off and turn it back on the power steering would be back on. this happened on multiple occasions. on may 15th i parked my car. went to church, came out of church, moved my car to a different parking spot, turned car off. when i restarted it the power steering went out and has been ever since. i was quoted at 1800 to get it fixed by dealership. *tr

I had my daughter and 4 month old grandson with me. we drove 7 miles to town to go to grocery store with no car troubles. parked and went into store upon returning and starting my vehicle it started dinging at me and i didn't know why until i tried to pull out and had no power steering. at this point i noticed i had 2 messages "service advanctrac" and "power steering assist fault". i looked under the hood for my power steering fluid only to discover that i had none and that the car had electronic power steering. i shut the car off and restarted both messages went away and car ran fine. in july it happened again and this time i was out of state, 5 hrs from home, on the freeway heading home when i had to pull off and shut the car down and restart it then i made it home. in september it happened again and this time my daughter had my car coming home from the grocery store in town with her 8 month old son coming up a hill out of town limits. she shut it down and restarted then made home. now its october and on sunday the 26th i drove to town for church with my foster son and the car ran fine. when i left church i started the car and both messages appeared again but shutting off the car would not fix it. i had to drive home with no power steering. my husband disconnected the battery for 1/2 hr and that didn't fix it either. i have been researching and found that this is a problem in the 2010-2012 ford fusion and its a costly problem that i cant pay for so now my car has to sit and i have no means of transportation, especially since i live in the country with no public transportation. please help!! *tr
