Problems with 2006 Dodge Charger ENGINE

On average, the 2006 Dodge Charger starts to “feel” problems with the ENGINE and its various aspects after 95 880 miles.

Recently reported ENGINE problems on 2006 Dodge Charger

System failure when vehicle is at stand still or low speed. the vehicle will completely shut off. the vehicle immediately starts up again. have had a authorized dealership diagnose the problem with no diagnostic. *tr

Was pulling out of a store onto major road car just died like no fuel or spark has happened multiple times now once with my grandson in car put in neutral and restarted ok for day or so then does it again it really seems to be safety issue is there a recall on this issue i really like the car but safety first also im original owner car still stock. *tr

Immediately after fueling vehicle to regular capacity and automatic shutoff - no "topping off". left the filling station and the car stalled several times, each time in a precarious position such as decelerating to make a turn or coming to a stop at a light. car dies losing power steering and breaks. thought this might be bad gas but it has since repeated every time the car is refueled. this is becoming a serious safely concern as the condition is common during the first 50 or so miles of driving after a fill up. upon speaking with the dealer they blamed the issue on the end user overfilling the tank. as the only user of the vehicle it is never overfilled nor topped off.

After re-fueling at a local gas station i came to a stop at a traffic signal light. when the light turned green the car stalled. i placed the car in park and it restarted. this also occurred several months ago and i experienced the same scenario each time after re-fueling my vehicle. *tr

This is not the first time this has happened and this is flat out dangerous! after driving all day i was almost out of gas so i stopped at one of my regularly used gas stations. as like i always do when i get gas i got a full tank and i do not overfill, once the handle pops i'm done pumping. vehicle started fine and i drove off the gas station with no problems. once on the main road i approached my first turn and in mid turn going about 20mph my vehicle just stalled,no warning or nothing it just randomly stalled. once the car rolled off the main street i put it in park and tried to start it up again. no luck, the vehicle wouldn't start. it took a few tries but managed to get it running again. to my surprise i didn't have a check engine light so i sat there for a while revving the engine and even shut it off and restarted it, everything seemed fine so i went on my way. shortly after i drove off it happened again and this time i was just driving straight. from the gas station to my home is about 10min and in that short time frame the vehicle randomly stalled 4 times! this went on for a few days until my fuel lvl was about 3/4 full? after researching online on dodge forums i was able to find out what may and most likely be the issue with my vehicle. some say its a collapsed gas tank which affects a check valve in the gas tank that is for the evap system. when you have a full tank and the system opens up to release gas vapors back into the engine it's actually sending raw fuel back into the engine which in turn floods the vehicle and causes the stall. of course this part can't be replaced or fixed since the tank and those parts are sold as one piece which is big $$$! my only fix for this until this is recalled is i don't get a full tank anymore. this is a serious and dangerous issue which should be recalled immediately before someone gets into a serious accident. *tr

I have a 2006 dodge charger r/t with a 5.7 hemi. on several occasions, the engine has stalled when i was stopped at a stoplight. the car was in drive and stopped with my foot on the brake. after putting in into park, it would take several tries to get the engine started again. it also stalled once while coasting into my driveway. i was traveling at less than 5 mph with my foot on the brake. again it was hard to restart. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 dodge charger. the contact stated that she was driving approximately 55 mph when the check engine sensor light illuminated and the vehicle suddenly stalled. the vehicle was diagnosed by the dealer but the cause of the problem was not determined. the manufacturer was not notified. the failure mileage was 82,729.

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 dodge charger xt. the contact stated that the engine would stall sporadically after the vehicle was refueled. the contact inquired about a technical service bulletin (tsb) under nhtsa action number: pe13016 (fuel system, gasoline) however, the extended warranty only covered the vehicle for up to 100,000 miles and the contact had exceeded the mileage. the vehicle was not repaired or diagnosed. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 108,000.

Driving at 65 mph on the freeway, the vehicle began to shudder/ hesitate, there was so much white smoke from my vehicle that i could not see anything behind me in my rear view mirror. i had to have the vehicle loaded onto a flat bed tow truck. the number 3 valve seat had dropped out and smashed holes in the piston, the debris had pummeled the cylinder head. the debris had then been sucked back into the inlet manifold, the debris was deposited into number 1 and 2 cylinders pummeling the head of the pistons and cylinder heads. there were actually shards of metal embedded in the cylinder head. the vehicle is next to worthless at this time. the vehicle is a limited addition daytona and cost about $35k new. i have been dealing with dodge for more than a year as this is a design fault and appears to be quite common. dodge refuses to do anything about it. i spoke to an executive of dodge with the title of head of top care customer care for fiat chrysler automobiles on 4/9/2015, her statement "you should not expect much more than 100,000 miles from any vehicle". really wants you to go and buy a chrysler product, i have owned 5 of their vehicles in 15 years, never again. *tr

Vehicle stalled multiple times while coming to a stop. hard to start after stalling. just filled the gas tank, and car stalled two or three times getting from the gas station to home. car stalled the next morning three times, again hard to start. *tr

The problem started back in december of 2013 at 77,000 miles. when i fill up at the gas station (i never top of) the car stalls and shuts off. it happens every time i fill up. i pull out of the gas station and it shuts off in the middle of the road. dealer can't find the problem. it's very frustrating. my main concern is safety and the repeated service visits and cost. the last time was scary because it shut off at a red light. when i started up the car again it shut off in the middle of traffic. i managed to get home but the car shut off several times during the drive. *js

The car stalled a number of times in traffic. i had just filled the tank. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 dodge charger. the contact stated that the vehicle would stall after refueling. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing. the contact was advised that the fuel tank valve was damaged and the fuel tank would need to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure and current mileage was 84,000. updated 02/06/14*lj

Vehicle began to misfire and then stalled approximately 1/4 mile after filling fuel tank. this has happened multiple times and is occurring more frequently. this is a serious safety issue since vehicle stopped in the middle of an intersection and almost caused an accident. was able to restart the car and continue to destination. online forums attribute the cause to a faulty vapor purge valve/evap canister and requires fuel tank replacement. *tr

Fueled the car, car stalled several times while driving. happens each time car is fueled. i have tried fueling slowly, and fueling small amounts, nothing works. car will stall 2-3 times either while sitting or while driving. *tr

I gassed up, and then drove off. when slowing down for a stop light, my car's oil light came on and stalled out. it restarted, but then shut off again. i was able to re-start and then travel 35 miles each way visiting family. this happened again on december 3rd after gassing up, it shut down on me when i got to work in the morning, then stalled again on the way home. then again yesterday, dec. 4th 2013 when i got to work, i backed into my parking spot, and it shut down. then leaving for the day, i was going down the parking garage about to exit, and it shut off before i could leave my building. i then drove it around the block, and it shut down again, and i had a hard time starting it. it finally started, and i headed home, and it stalled in traffic again, not even 10 minutes later. i was able to start it, and make it home. and it's sitting at home today, december 5th, 2013. *tr

Engine overheated, immediately shut off and, i now need a new engine. there were recalls for some of the engine cooling fans in my car year and model (06 dodge charger), but i am being told that it does not apply to me. *tr

After filling up with gas this morning, as i accelerated away from the gas station the car began to buck and jerk. it smoothed out for a little while, then after accelerating away from the next stoplight it jerked and made a loud noise. this is heavy suburban traffic, so very stop-and-go. the car began to stall, and only restart if i depress the accelerator all the way to the floor while starting. go a little bit further, then buck and stall again. very dangerous! i'm learning through online vehicle forums that this is a relatively common problem with this year/make/model vehicle's gas tank and the integral "roll-over" valve which is supposed to prevent liquid fuel from entering the engine, yet the manufacturer refuses to acknowledge a faulty design that is leading to potentially dangerous situations. will it take accidents, fires and death to make it a higher priority? *tr

My 2006 dodge charger stalled on multiple occasions without any warning. usually when i fill the gas tank. the car just stops in the middle of the road. i can restart the car but it will happen atleast 5 or 6 more times after. i use the book recommended level of gas at two different reputable gas stations, with the thought that it was bad gas. i dropped off my car to my local dodge dealership and it cost me $130.35 for them to just look for the problem. they said that it is the "roll over valve" and it would cost over $1200.00 to fix! *tr

Engine stall after refuel. in researching this issue, nhtsa #pe13016 addresses the problem. however, i have yet to receive any documentation that allows repair of my vehicle. dodge states my vehicle isn't covered. *tr

While i was driving approximately 35 mph my vehicle suddenly stalled causing me to lose power to the motor and power to the steering and brakes. i had to quickly pull off to the side of the road as the traffic was heavy and i had no power to control my car. this was a dangerous situation and i fear it may happen again. i have read about (dodge charger forum) many other owners of similar vehicles that this problem occurs shortly after you fill up the gas tank. i did just fill the gas tank prior to my car stalling incident. i feel this is a dangerous defect that develops on this vehicle and it needs to be looked into immediately. *tr

Vehicle stalls and kills after refueling. it happens before even leaving the pump and/or once driving has started. it takes a few miles or some time before it's normal again. if it's sitting idle, you can hear it struggling before a burst in rpm's leading to a stall. sometimes it starts right back up. sometimes it doesn't for a while. *tr

My car has stalled 3 separate times right after i have re-fueled. when driving away from the gas station and onto the street it has sputtered and then turned off in the middle of the street. my vehicle will constantly turn off making it unsafe to drive it. i have once been in the middle of the intersection when my vehicle stalled, i am lucky i was not struck by another vehicle. but as you can see it is extremely dangerous having this happen when driving. *tr

Vehicle stopped after filling with gas. started up again and shut down right away. this happens frequently after filling up with gas. could only put in one incident but this is an on going issue. it appears there is an agreement in hand for correction why isn't it published? *js

Car stalls and dies when attempting to accelerate. has occurred multiple times, and each incident happens right after filling the tank with gasoline. *tr

My vehicle shuts off at random times. while i am sitting at a red light it will shut off or while i am waiting for the car to warm up. when i take off the engine will shut off for a brief second. the engine starts up and the car will jerk forward. sometimes when the vehicle shuts off it wont go back into gear and some of the gauges flash. i was left in the middle of an intersection twice when the vehicle shut off. i have taken the vehicle to transmission shops and dealerships and they can't tell me what is wrong with the vehicle. *tr

Every time i fuel up mt charger r/t, it stalls when i am stopped. it has happened the last 3 times i have fueled my car. no lights come on in dash, nor any warnings. sometimes it will just sputter when i go to take off. after a day it goes back to normal. *tr

I notice that numerous 2006 dodge chargers have had pre mature engine failure. numerous of them have a "dropped valve". i have a 2006 dodge charger that has been extremely well maintained and had the same issue. i drove my vehicle which was running fine with no issues and parked it at the store. when i finished at the store, i returned to my vehicle, got in and i attempted to start it at which time the engine made a horrific noise as if it was going to fall apart or explode. i shut it down immediately. white smoke was coming from the tailpipe so i had it towed to a shop where i was told it needed a new engine. i had it towed back to my home. i called dodge in 2013 and was told that they had not heard of such a problem and that i should take it to a shop. the vehicle sat (undrivable) for almost 2 years as i was told by a dealership that repairs could amount to almost 7000.00. i have finally taken it to a local shop and after compression testing and head removal, it was determined the same thing happened as in the reports i have read, which is a dropped valve in cylinder 6. i contacted dodge once again with no answers or assistance. in review of the existing complaints, i notice that the 11th digit of the vin is the same with most of the complaints that contain a vin number. i believe this is a design flaw in the head that is causing this malfunction which is a serious safety issue when vehicles die and quit running for no apparent reason and without warning. had i have driving down the road it could have been a serious safety hazard. how does this get investigated, and how many complaints have to be generated to have dodge look into this manufacturer defect causing safety issues? i have pictures of the damage caused by the valve seat but i am having a difficult time uploading. i can e-mail them on request

My car stalled less than 1 mile after pulling out of a gas station after filling up with gas. it took several tries to restart before successfully able to drive again. i thought bad gas. but it now happens every time after i fill my tank full of gas. my car's rpms will sputter for the first couple miles after filling up with gas. it also stalls every time driving within the first 2 miles of filling up with gas. it is very scary driving with my family in the car and fearing that my car will stall in the middle of an intersection and cause a major accident. there is no check engine light or diagnostic codes for this. just the oil light comes on and the engine dies, power steering fails, and abs are not working. *tr

On 10/30/13 at approx 9:30am i refueled my '06 dodge charger 5.7l hemi rt/daytona edition @the gas station w/89-octane fuel. as i pulled out of the station @under 15mph, my car stalled-engine died, oil light & bell appeared, & steering locked up. it took 2-attempts the 1st time to restart it w/ it acting like the engine had flooded. i drove approx. 2-blocks & it again stalled (including all of the above) as i was slowing for a stoplight. it took 2-3 attempts to restart. i drove approx 1-1/2blocks, including a slight incline, to a stoplight where it again stalled, though this time immediately restarted. after driving 3-blocks more, as i slowed for a stoplight it again began to sputter & buck as though going to stall; i cont'd to brake but maintained pressure on the accelerator attempting to maintain rpms & oil pressure; however as i turned the corner it again stalled & took 4-attempts to restart. after sitting for 15mins i had no other issues this date. today(11/25/13) i refueled & experienced the sputtering, bucking, stalling, engine dying, oil light, zero oil psi, etc w/ 10-full stalls(engine failure episodes) in less than 20-mins. after allowing it to sit for 2+ hours the engine didn't fully die but did buck several times on the drive home. there was at least 1 add'l day between 10/30/13 & 11/25/13 that i experienced the same problems. all stalls have happened at 35mph or less. prior to the problems after refueling, i was having problems filling the gas tank. i attempted to refuel the car & the auto pump shutoff engaged after less than 1/2-gal entering the tank; the auto pump shutoff would engage 3-5xs per refuel & required multiple readjustments of the pump nozzle to fill my gas tank. i haven't had the car in for diagnostics b/c of the neg reports on the forums indicating diagnostics show no discernible problems. sounds like tsb#1803015 to me. *tr

Car stalls and cuts off after refueling. i always put 89 octane or higher gasoline in my vehicle. this is a severe safety issue because you can get rammed from behind when in traffic i.e. washington, dc area the busiest streets in america. the dealer suggested the consumer spend $1800 to replace the fuel tank. updated 02/06/14

This is a brand new engine put in by dodge and has only 3000 miles since it was replaced 4 months ago. i filled up the gas tank today and within a minute of pulling away from gas station as i was making a left turn, the engine ceases and stops. i tried to re start it didn't start right away. after 2 tries it started and about a minute later as i pressed on the brakes to turn left the car stalls out again. *tr

After filling up gas tank, without over filling by rounding off, the car will stall out within 1/4 mile of running. it takes time cranking engine to start, then will buck and stall occasionally until it is driven at least 2-3 miles. all power steering and brakes are lost at this time as well. *tr

Engine stalled out while driving on freeway after filling up with gas. three different occasions dropped valve seats, 8/2011 and 9/2013. *tr

This has been an on-going problem that we've been chasing for several years. the car will stall while driving, usually without warning sometimes the gauges will drop and the warning "ding" will sound. most of the time the car will restart, however there has been instances that it has to sit for awhile before restarting. in any case, it is a safety concern since it will stall while driving. i've had it happen on the highway as well as on city streets. there are times in which we have to restart the car multiple times in order to get the gauges and headlights to turn on when this happens the tail lights, and brake lights don't work either. it is clear there is an electrical issue with these cars, i hope dodge takes care of their customers and resolves the issues that are occurring before someone gets killed. *tr

After filling the car with gas, and driving approximately 1 to 2 miles, the car stalled after making a left turn and starting to accelerate. i was able to restart the car and drive home. the next day the car acted like it was going to stall again after making a turn and starting to accelerate, but it didn't. this problem started in december of 2012 when the car had about 40000 miles on it. after researching the problem on the internet, i stopped topping off the gas tank and the problem did not re-occur until october 2013. i am concerned that the problem is getting worse and even if i don't fill the gas tank, the car will stall after driving it a few miles. fortunately, every time the car stalled i was turning on to a quiet street with little traffic, but this is a very dangerous problem that requires a recall from dodge. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 dodge charger. the contact stated that while parked, the vehicle would not start. the vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic for diagnosis. the mechanic stated the piston had failed causing the engine head to fracture. the mechanic stated the engine would have to be replaced. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the vin was not available. the approximate failure mileage was 94,000.

1st incident: on october 4, 2013, my car stalled coming to a stop at a red light less than an 1/8th of a mile after leaving a gas station after a fill up. after 3 attempts to start engine, it started up. 1/2 a mile away, the engine dies at the next red light stop. 3-4 attempts to start car, it started. car ran rough/sputtered on my way to my house 1.5 miles away. 2nd incident: on january 10, 2014, my car stalled coming to a stop at a red light 1 mile away from a gas station after filling up. after 4 attempts to start car, the engine fired up. car ran rough/sputtered for next 2-3 miles. *tr

On or about 03 october 2013, the engine (5.7l hemi) stalled going at 30-35 mph. the engine service light came on, but disappeared when i restarted the engine. since that day, i have experienced multiple engine stall incidents (about 10 times) usually at a traffic stop being idle or approaching a stop, and during reverse. in november, while cruising on a highway, the engine acted as if to stall again with all the lights and chiming on the evic on and off, but did not stall probably due to the momentum or inertia. at that time, i had my entire family (size of four) with me in the vehicle and feared for their safety. i went to multiple chrysler dealers and service centers, but could not prevent the problem from reoccuring again. it appears from my online research and reading other complaints on nhtsa website that the symptoms i am experiencing are probably consistent with the faulty sensor in the fuel tank. *tr

I have had this issue happen about five times. after filling up my car with gas (i do not overfill), i notice that my car will all of the sudden turn off. this has happened in the middle of an intersection and on the highway. i feel very anxious and scared when i drive now because of this issue. after discovering online that many other 2006 dodge chargers have experienced the same issue, i am hoping there is an honest solution out there. chrysler/dodge have not responded to any of my correspondence, with the exception of an automated response. from here on out, i will be forced to only fill my car with half a tank of gas. please advise if any other information/description is needed. hope to see some action soon. Car stalls out after filling up the tank. it also is dying and cranking back up at 40 mph and a couple of times on the freeway doing 80 mph. also just sitting at a red light with a half of tank of gas and car just dies. have to put it in park to restart it. *tr

I had refueled the car and drove about 10 miles toward my home, as i turned into my neighborhood the car stalled and would not restart. i coasted to my residence and stopped the car and turned the key to the off position. after 10 minutes i tried to start the car and it did, then surged and died again. restarted the car again and pulled it in to the garage and shut it down. *tr

I just got done filling my car with gas and while pulling up to the very first light after the gas station the car completely shut off . i kept trying to start it and it would just shut back off. after 5 minutes of that i was finally able to drive away. now my engine light is on also. *js

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 dodge charger. while driving 60 mph and attempting to increase speed, the accelerator pedal failed to respond when depressed. the vehicle began to decrease in speed and the check engine indicator illuminated. the failure recurred randomly. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where the failure could not be determined. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was approximately 80,000.

Car drove perfectly fine i stopped at family dollar for 5 minutes came out car would not start heard a engine noise towed it home mechanic said he pulled the plugs they were bent from the piston hitting it. also, the piston had a hole in it i need a new engine no warning signs or nothing. mechanic says he sees this very often on 06 chargers. *jb

I was driving my 2006 dodge charger after just getting it out of the shop. with no notice the car began to overheat i immediately pulled over and called a tow truck. when the tow truck arrived the car wouldn't start. went to dodge where they said i either needed a new engine or they might be able to save the other one first i had to pay $370 for the test. i should not be dealing with engine issues at 95k miles. the government needs to fix this or everyone should file a class action lawsuit against dodge for this defect. *tr

This has happened multiple times and seems to be increasing in frequency. when at idle, for example at a traffic light or in stop-and-go traffic, the engine has stalled. this happened again last night as well as this morning and it has me concerned. i have read that others complain of this happening with a full tank but that is not true for me. i never have over-filled the tank and even with it being a little over 1/2 full currently and it has stalled twice. i've found the active investigation (pe13016) and would like to be added to that group please. please let me know what else i can provide to help with this investigation and possible resolutions. thanks! *tr

After fueling vehicle, the engine died within half mile on road. put car in neutral to start engine, drove another 1-2 miles where car stalled and died again. has happened after filling up car and only with full tank, stalling occurs within 0-15 miles, then does not stall. have read several posting and discussions about this issue with same model/year cars. heard about possible investigation for faulty fuel/vapor separator valve with cuts off fuel to engine and causes engine to stall. had this happened to a driver who did not know how to react properly, or had a distracted driver not see my car stalled or stopped, this could have resulted in a serious problem. i had no power steering or power brakes and was not able to immediately restart vehicle in traffic, after momentary loss of power and finally able to restart the engine was i able to maneuver off the roadway safely. *tr

I was coming to a stop at a red light. the car began to shake like it was a manual transmission and was stalling, the car is an automatic. we stopped at the stop light and realized the engine had shut off. i put the vehicle in park, removed the key, and attempted to restart. it attempted 3-4 times to restart with no luck. i exited the vehicle to endure the gas cap was on and it was. after waiting for about 1-2 minutes i attempted to restart and was successful. this was about 2 miles after filling up the tank. this seems very similar to the currently pending investigation. it has not happened since but i have not filled up the gas tank since either. *tr

On several occasions in the past 6-8 months i have experienced engine stalling after filling my 2006 dodge charger up with gasoline. in addition to the stalling, on one occasion the engine cut off completely. thankfully, i was in a low traffic area and it didn't cause a crash. the stalling does not happen when the engine is filled up partially or with about $20.00 worth of gasoline. on september 1st after leaving the grocery store, my husband went to start the car and it started smoking profusely. the car was towed to the dealership. according to the dealership there was oil in the gas tank and, the engine was destroyed. one of the diagnosis codes indicated that cylinder # 5 had misfired. this problem has the potential to be extremely dangerous. chrysler doesn't seem to care at all. *tr
