Problems with 2006 Dodge Charger ENGINE

On average, the 2006 Dodge Charger starts to “feel” problems with the ENGINE and its various aspects after 95 880 miles.

Recently reported ENGINE problems on 2006 Dodge Charger

While merging onto the interstate my engine shut completely off; i lost power steering and all throttle control. after pulling onto the side of the road i was able to turn the ignition on and drive away like normal. i have a 5.7l hemi and the car has 37,700 miles.

Timing change broke

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 dodge charger. while driving at unknown speeds, the engine stalled without warning. the vehicle was taken to the dealer, but was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was notified and a complaint was filed. the failure mileage was 117,235.

The last time i filled up my car, it kept stalling and i would lose power steering and brakes while in traffic with my children in car. not very safe feeling. scared i was going to get hit with family in car. it would start up but it would keep stalling until i ran a few gallons out of it. i filled it up again today and noticed a sucking noise coming from gas tank. it started up then stalled as i took off. so i pulled over and kept starting it up every time it stalled. after about an hour of not stalling i drove home and parked in garage. it would stall going straight and turning.

Car shuts down completely while driving. check engine light comes on along with a red lighting bolt. went to dodge dealership & they ran diagnostics no code came up. they did replace fuel tank from a previous recall. got car back & immediately stalled again. carried car back & they ran diagnostic while driving & code came up to replace computer. replaced & programmed computer & car is still doing it. dodge states that they do not know what the problem is.

Drove the car to get a car wash. car went through the cleaning process and they were going to start to the car and it wouldn't start. had to have it pushed to the side of the building, after a while the car started but idled very rough and blueish smoke was coming out of the exhaust pipes. took it to a mechanic and they said it's a blown head gasket along with valves dropping into the cylinder causing engine failure. no pre warning and i was very religious with maintenance. this is a known issue that should be fixed by dodge. now i need to buy a new car.

Engine stalls several times immediately after filling gas tank. this is very dangerous because you loose steering and power brakes in traffic. the dodge dealer says that it does this because there is gasoline in the vapor canister. i believe this is because something in the fuel tank is causing fuel to get into the canister where it does not belong. changing the canister is not going to solve the problem. i am afraid to drive the car and i'm afraid to buy another dodge or chrysler.

My 2006 dodge charger completely died on me while driving at 40 mph. luckily i was alone on a city road but lost all control and felt i was barley braking and steering was near impossible. i was able turn everything off in the car and restart but it happened 3 other times within 2 miles. at one point while turning left on a highway it died; i was almost to a point to hitting other cars turning left in same direction and others behind me. i was able to drive 4 miles today without incident however after researching this exact issue among other charger owners i searched for a recall and nothing has been said by dodge. this issue doesn't seem to be from personal actions but a flaw in a system on this make/model. it has happened to me twice before a few years ago however i read something about a gas cap and felt it was isolated. after last night and reading blogs today i see that this is a wide spread issue and not caused by not maintaining a vehicle or bad driving. this is an issue in design or manufacturing. had this happened in any other driving setting during rush hour someone could be seriously injured or killed. i notified dodge and reported the issue but they said i would not be contacted and to keep receipts if something was wrong in case they do recall something. why hasn't this been corrected after all these reports for the same issue to this many of the same vehicles? this has been happening since i reported it in jan of 2017 on safercar.gov. no action or contact has been made.

After filling up at a gas station, the car will stall out randomly at all speeds of travel. this is a huge safety issue that has sht down the car while merging onto freeway in front of semi-trucks only to have power steering and propulsion stop. luckily truck was paying attention and honked and swerved around, while i rode off onto the shoulder. then it restarted, ran for another minute and stalled again while trying to get back off the shoulder. i ended up letting it idle for 5 min before being able to merge successfully and get home. online i have seen many people saying they have same or similar issues with their 2006 dodge vehicles as well. please help to get this resolved as this could have very well killed someone.

After filling up gas tank, vehicle will rapidly lose rpms and stall when stopped at lights or stop signs. i then put the vehicle in park and am able to restart it, but it will stall again while moving right after. this causes a loss of power steering which has almost caused me to crash multiple times. i only bought the car 12 days ago and it has done this multiple times. i have read the multiple other complaints, and have tried to fix the problem by replacing the pcm, but that did not work. others have suggested replacing the gas tank because the stall could be caused by the vapor recovery system failing following refueling. i believe this issue is related to nhtsa action pe13016. the vehicle in its current condition is unsafe to drive as it will stall while moving and lose power steering. the problem first occurred on 11/7/16, and occurred again on 11/15/16, both times after i refueled. it will not occur if the gas is below 3/4 full. i replaced the pcm on 11/10/16, but that did not fix the problem.

Charger is stalling frequently. after filling up with gas. stalled and went into some safe mode where it wouldn't go into second gear. stalled on the highway, side roads and while making a turn. while making the turn it stalled in the middle of the intersection while a truck was coming at us. i had my son in the car and we were stranded in the road. we could have been killed!! i have read up on this and it seams to be a faulty sensor at the gas tank fill up. why has this not been addressed? sounds like you are waiting for someone to get killed before doing anything. great company!!!

My 2006 dodge charger keep stalling while driving. i was sitting at a light getting to ready to turn and the car stopped in the middle of the turn. thankful it was a turn signal or i would have been hit. also the engine light come on and the car just stalls then - you can wait about 5 min. and it will start back up. upon doing my research i am unsure to why their has not been a recall. i was on the highway and it starts to stall then i hit the gas and it keeps going. *tr

The car stalled while i was driving at about 50-55 mph. everything went out. eventually the car started. now, when i stop at a stop light or stop sign it stalls out. i have not received a warning light and i have had the vehicle checked with a computer. there are no lights on the dash indicating there is a problem. *tr

As per dodge/chrysler mechanic, #4 cylinder valve seat dropped and internally destroyed my 5.7 hemi engine.

(dropped valve seat) i was on my way to lunch when i realized i left an item in my desk that was needed. i turned around and headed back to the office. i parked my car, ran back in to the office and returned to my vehicle within 5 minutes. when i tried to start my engine, it would not start. i ended up having to get the car towed to my local machine shop. my mechanic told me that a valve seat dropped and the engine needed replacement. my mechanic was quite knowledgeable about these kinds of problems. as he stated that it happened very often with dodge hemi 5.7 engines. he stated that the valve seats were made of poor metal material. he also stated that chrysler was very aware of the defect and what it can cause. i did my research online and found hundreds of threads with people that experienced the same problem. needless to say, i had to buy a brand new engine and several other engine parts that failed due to this catastrophe. not to mention major labor costs. *tr

Engine knocks, won"t exceed 55 mph. seems like a common problem that has yet to be addressed. to make matters worse the transmission is german and will cost $800 for the part alone, thanks dodge.

Car engine shuts down at highway speeds momentarily and back on a couple of times engine shut completely off had to pull over to the side of the road engine restarts no fault lights come on after searching the internet i find that this problem has been around for a while very dangerous if dodge has addressed this problem i find no recalls it should be taken care of as soon as possible this has been going on for quite a while on my vehicle today being the latest episodes thursday, october 13, 2016

What can i say i have a bad hydraulic lifter from a bad valve seal that cause alot of other problems. i was stiffed 1415.00 from a dodge dealership.

Valve seat dropped in the #6 cylinder destroying the engine. needs to be completely overhauled. after doing some research on the matter, i found that it's a common problem.

My 2006 dodge charger rt stalls intermittently while i'm turning a corner on a city street or stopped at a red light. when it stalls, i do not have power steering. this is extremely dangerous because i could get hit. sometimes it stalls more often after i fill up with gas. i do not overfill. i have been filing my gas tank the same way for 10 years and until october of 2016 it has never been a problem.

The dodger charger rt has been the worse vehicle i have ever paid for. my charger is only at 80,000 miles and the charger has been maintained properly. the transmission has issues with going over 50 mph and the engine now knocks. i am just siting here trying to figure out how a vehicle at 80,000 have this many issues.

2006 dodge charges with 5.7 hemi v8 - experiencing random stalling. happens at any speed. everything shuts off including the power steering and abs. first happened while merging onto freeway and i had to drive off the road to avoid a semi-truck. this happened with my young child in the vehicle. i had the gas tank, fuel canister, and purge valve replaced. the problem still occurs regardless of the amount of gas in the vehicle and regardless of when it was refueled. even though this appears to be a common problem the dealership has been no help and even tried charging me for unnecessary diagnostics. car does not flash a code so after replacing what was supposed to fix the issue, driving the vehicle is the only way to find out if it is fixed. this has lead to a few dangerous close calls. please look into this issue before people get hurt because this is a serious problem. thank you, [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

My 2006 charger will stall and or jolt violently as soon as i leave the gas station, and it is only when i fill up my tank. after restarting the vehicle twice and driving a short while i do not have any problems, it only happens when i fill up my gas tank. i know that newer vehicle fuel tanks are designed not to be force filled due to the special evap system. i only fill the tank till the station pump nozzle clicks off, which is what i was told how to fill these newer vehicles. this problem has been going on for over several months, though i have not had any traffic accidents, i fear that this is an accident waiting to happen. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 dodge charger. while driving unknown speeds or while parked, the vehicle stalled. all the instrument cluster warning indicators flashed and the vehicle automatically restarted. the local dealer was not contacted. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 96,981.

I have a 2006 dodge charger that shuts off while driving. vehicle has 97284 miles. i currently have the vehicle in for repair at phillips chrysler dodge jeep in ocala fl. the pcm has been replaced but this issue still continues. vehicle shuts off with out warning while driving.

My 2006 dodge charger daytona 5.7l engine had a problem with a valve seal/lifter / solenoid in 2015, which was repaired by the dealer in december. now, 7 months later, it has lost a piston in the engine, and needs a new engine. when the lifter problem occurred, the car was being driven, and started to misfire. when the piston went (the dealer says that is what it is), the engine was being started. when starting the vehicle, it misfired, and started clanking. and then died.

I drove my vehicle to the store and everything was fine. i came out an hour later and attempted to start the car but it wouldn't start. i attempted to start it again and it started but the engine sounded horrible so i turned it off immediately. i had it towed to my mechanic who said there was no compression on cylinder #3 and the valve was unseated causing damage to the cylinder. i take meticulous care of my vehicle and this type of engine failure should have never happened with only 105k miles on it. upon reading several thousand reviews on this 5.7l hemi engine, this appears to be a major problem and has been identified as a manufacturer defect. the below is the diagnosis for this early engine failure: "faulty valve seats according to the engine company, the original chrysler design presses the valve seats into the cylinder heads. the problem results when the powdered metal the valve seats are made of expands, causing it to drop into contact with the valve and pistons, which leads to catastrophic failure. in this process the seat breaks into many pieces causing deterioration of the piston, cylinder wall, valve and cylinder head. this metal can even get into the intake manifold ' if not cleaned properly, it can lead to a failure in replacement engines. piston ring landings again according to pp, a flaw in the engineering of the piston ring landings results in the engines running much hotter than they should. coupled with what they call overly small drain holes in the heads and block, this overheating breaks down new oil, leaving sludge in the engine, ultimately blocking it. consequent oil-starvation can lead to engine block seizure."

During travel from ft. belvoir, va to fayetteville, nc the car began sputtering and acting like it was out of fuel. it had 3/4 of a tank. made it to the next exit where the car stopped running. able to give it throttle and get it started you can hear rattling in the top end of the motor. had it towed to crown dodge in fayetteville, nc where the diagnosis was a broken valve seat which fell inside the cylinder scarring the cylinder walls. the warranty company would not cover the repair costs on the car. this vehicle is maintained by a mechanic with over 20 years of experience with regular oil changes and preventative maintenance. it is a design flaw where the powdered metal valve seats expand at a different rate than the aluminum head leading to severe engine damage. dodge knows of this problem and fixed their design in the 2010-up models, however has failed the public in compensating those that have had engine failure in 2006-2009 models.

Leaving work one day and stopped at the gas station to fill up the tank. i turned off the engine and got out to pump the gas. once i filled up my tank i get back in the car tried to start the car and it would not start.

While pulling out from a stop light my engine began to miss and run bad.i pulled over and shut it off.after letting it sit for a few minutes i tried again,it wouldn't turn over so i had it towed to a shop, they tore it apart and informed me i had dropped the valve seat in cylinder 4,it destroyed the intake valve, mds solenoid and scratched the cylinder wall

Valve guide failure in 2005 and 2006 dodge magnums and dodge chargers.this is an well keep epidemic that dodge has not addressed.there are many hundreds of failures between 60,000 miles and 100,000 miles

While driving along hwy, noticed engine temp getting warm (apparently another radiator had blown and was dumping coolant under car), so i started trying to get to side lanes. then saw temp was close to red, so i shut the engine off (at speed) and coasted off to shoulder. determined radiator was unfixable and waited for tow. engine had cooled so tried to start the engine to briefly adjust it to be picked up by tow truck. engine was hard to start, then began making awful clanking, pinging, rattling noises for a bit, then stalled out. had it brought home and ended up finding that the intake valve seats for cylinders #4 and 8 had dropped out of the head and had been rattling around against valves and made several dings in pistons. ended up costing me over $2500 to fix the top end, but i may still be dealing with piston ring damage issues.

On the night of june 3, 2016 i parked my 2006 dodge charger r/t in my drive after driving for about an hour. i went back out to leave again and the car would not start. after checking for any computer issues i had the car towed my the dealership. they performed tests and determined that my intake valve seat in my #1 cylinder dropped and cause the engine to stop running. the dealership wanted to charge me $3200 to replace the cylinder head. i chose not to have them perform the work, instead i removed the cylinder head and took it to a local machine shop where the fixed the issue on the cylinder head and i was able to install it back into my vehicle and get it running again. this issue still cost me over $1200.

I drove my charger out to lunch, was running impeccable, after having my meal, we got back in the car, tried starting it, it sounded like a hard, difficult start and once it ignited the cylinders, the engine started making horrible banging noises, and killed itself. there was no warning, no overheating, my car has 88,000 miles on it. i've always taken extremely good care of it, as i should know how to being a mechanic. i pulled the motor out of the car, and opened it up to find a destroyed combustion chamber, and a destroyed piston. there are much more unreliable cars out there that can make it past 88,000 miles without severe engine damage. so does that make dodge the most unreliable manufacturer? if dodge does not assist in fixing the problem (a partial refund to help cover the massive cost) i will never be buying another dodge. uploaded is a picture looking down the intake port of the drivers side 6th cylinder. the other picture is of the piston damage. this is an rt car with 5.7 hemi.

Filled tank up with gas day before this happened. driving down road at 25 mph the car stalled. it would restart and stall again.

After refilling my tank with gas, my car suddenly began to stall. immediately after refilling, i started my car and within a few seconds it shut off. after many attempts of starting it and remaining stationary, my car finally remained on for more than 5 minutes and i assumed it was safe to begin driving. 5 minutes into driving on a city street the car began to jerk and stalled in the middle of the street, fortunately it didn't cause an accident. i was able to restart it and turn into the nearest shopping center where i contacted chrystler, who claimed they had no knowledge of this issue. i've seen a multitude of complaints with similar, if not the same, issues i continue to experience.

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 dodge charger. while attempting to exit a residential driveway, the vehicle stalled without warning. the contact was unable to restart the vehicle. the vehicle was not taken to the dealer. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the vin was not available. the failure mileage was 129,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 dodge charger. while driving 60 mph, the engine would shut off. the eas code indicator illuminated prior to the failure. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who found a manufacturer recall pertaining to the fuel tank. the contact did not receive a recall notification. the manufacturer stated that they could not assist since the vehicle was too old. the contact also stated that the vehicle stalled after fuel was added to the fuel tank. the vehicle was taken to village dodge, inc. (819 ny-66, hudson, ny 12534, (518) 828-1585) and the failure was repaired. the stalling failure had not been resolved. an independent mechanic diagnosed that the vehicle's computer system misread that there was no fuel in the tank. as a result, all the electrical components shut off. the failure mileage was 54,000.

Dodge charger stalls while stopped at stop signs or red lights like its out of gas. at first it would do it maybe once a week after filling up my tank, but now it is several times a day. my vehicle is around 137,000 miles.

Head lights flash while driving then shut off then come back on. as i down shifted on the freeway the car died and check engine light came on now i'm stuck with a broke down car. it shifted really hard and died at the same time the check engine came on

Vehicle has been overheating and has cause many headache cause of no way to transportation for me or family to work, school ect. spent lot of money of trying to fix from dealership to not get resolved. feel like im being rob!

Vehicle stalls while in motion, engine stalls shuts itself off on start up or while in motion in traffic. leaving me with no power to control the vehicle. this has been an ongoing problem for over a year starting in january of 2016. dodge dealership cannot find why it stalls even though it stalled on them while they had it in there shop. the reason for the stall is unknown . normal vehicle servicing is up to date but the car stalling continues to be a problem.

Takata recall - i never received a notification that i had a recall on my airbags - i will be looking into this shortly -- also, and more importantly, my engine stalls after i refuel -- there is no recall on this issue but apparently it happens a lot as i did see that there was an inquiry into this -- this just started to happen to my car in the last 2 years and so therefore it is out of warranty.

Our problem still has not been fixed. the car continues to "die in flight." i have uploaded a video to youtube. https://youtu.be/ssawxdfdswa this occurred while attempting to merge onto the interstate. the rpms jump up and down. the oil light and the electronic throttle control light flash and ding. the check engine light came on. this is going to cause an accident and the dealership says there is nothing wrong with the car.

My car keeps stalling even while driving above 20 mph, especially whiling pulling out into traffic. my car has been at the dealership for a month with no resolution. my car is not safe.

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 dodge charger. while driving approximately 55 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning. the contact found a recall related to the fuel tank. the contact took the vehicle to the dealer and the fuel tank was replaced; however, the vehicle began to slow down to approximately 35 mph when reaching high speeds. additionally, the rpms would continue to increase without the acceleration matching the rpm increase. the contact informed the manufacturer who opened a case on the contact's behalf and informed the contact that there was no recall relating to the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 86,000.

22 may 2015 oil pump failed. took vehicle to dennis dillon dodge of caldwell idaho 26 may 2015. repair quoted at $996.00. actual charge $1816.66. received car back 8 july 2015 with thumping. re complained to service 24 july 2015. they wanted to repair unknown which did not exist before their handling. continued to drive until 11 november 2015 when 1 quart of oil was added & vehicle began thrashing & died, refusing to run again. vehicle has sat parked in storage at home ever since. filed complaint with idaho attorney general office. dennis dillon cfo duane sessions replied & lied covering his service manager & mechanic. ag office ceased further action.

While driving the car will cut off . the lights have flickered off and on. the room needle goes down likes is cutting off and then goes back up. i have the charger 2006 rt police package. this has happen while driving, turning at corner, and sitting at the light. these issues have been going on for the last 6 months.

I have complained on this vehicle multiple times now. it continues to have a randomly stalling engine while driving. the dealership claims it is not the gas tank. it has finally started causing the check engine light to come on (yay! it might actually get fixed). just kidding! the dealership states that the codes that show up are general pcm codes that mean nothing. from online research, it appears it may be an electrical issue with the pcm, ecm, or numerous other parts. either way, most of us go without cars for weeks while mechanics cannot find the actual cause thus cannot fix a dangerous vehicle. most of us don't want to drive vehicles that stall while going 40 mph.
