Tl* the contact owns a 1999 jeep grand cherokee. while driving 45 mph, the vehicle stalled but continued to roll forward. the contact had to shift the gear shifter into the park position to get the vehicle to come to a complete halt. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the brake pads needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired; however, the failure persisted. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 186,000.

99 jeep grand cherokee purchased 4/2003. front brakes shudders at road/highway speeds of 40-65mph. acquired this/tsb from sd school district automotive shop. this/tsb requires replacement of akebono front calipers from teves. after replacement the problem didn't cease. did some analyzing myself, found that rear brake pads were cracked. replaced the whole rear brake components and the problem ceased until after rear brake pads passed 60% of thickness, problem arises again. my own conclusion lies to design of rear brake pad material to be insufficient for the weight of vehicle. *tr

I own a 1999 jeep grand cherokee limited. multiple times the left front brake caliper freezes (seizes) onto the rotor causing the vehicle to violently shake and pull to the left, warping the rotor and damaging the brake pads. i have replaced the rotors and brake pads but after a short period of time it happens again. it seems to be triggered by using the brakes frequently, for example when braking going down hills. while i have not had a fire the brakes were glowing red on one occasion. i believe this to be an extremely dangerous defect that must be corrected as my research indicates that many, if not all owners of this year (as well as other years) make and model experience this problem. *tr

My 1999 jeep grand cherokee limited w/42,000 miles. yes . not a typo . 42,000, orignal owner & "scared to death" to drive this suv. i have alot of the already problems, that have been reported. had to pay many, w/my own cash. this suv schould have came in 1 color "lemon yellow". it is an accident watng to happen. the recent problem is now i have no a/c-heat or defroster. ths is due, to failure of the automatic temp control to work. i t started 1st by intermittently working, till now not working at all, this is just 1 more, to the list , of many other problems. i don't think that it is an coincidence that all my issue have happenned, almost exactly, in the order, of all the other complaints. i can't undestand how a company can get away w/this. this new problem can cost up to $2000, if it is, like previous reported problems, happens to be the "blend doors". as a handicapped driver i drive less than 4,000 miles a year. this is the only auto i drive, thus the many, many probs have yet to raise thier head. i have read almost all complaints(too many to read) this suv schould be a "total recall, i have never heard more complaints & problems, in my life, for any automobile. this suv schould be studied & reseached, on "how not to build an automobile. just read the many complaints here & on the internet. we are not making this stuff up. i don't know how they stayed in business as long as they did. we, the taxpayers, bailed them out. who is bailing out all the owners, of this "death-trap"? if that is not absurd enuff, many problems could have been repaired, by jeep & still can. what is the purpose, of nhsta, if not to intervene? you have all the complaints. hundreds of them. you have them posted, yet, we taxpayers/owners safety, has been at risk ever since this suv was driven out of the showroom. how did you not make a recall on the rotor/brakes issue which was reported at 3,000 miles? i am so frustrated. is braking problems not a safety issue? please, help us! *tr

I own a 1999 grand cherokee limited jeep. the front rotor disk has warped due to the heat created when applying the brakes. as a result the steering wheel vibrates violently on the application of the brakes. the rotor & calipers have been changed! when will chrysler help to resolve an issue, which is obviously a manufacturing fault? *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 1999 jeep grand cherokee. while driving 55 mph under normal driving conditions the driver attempted to slow down. the front of the vehicle and the steering wheel began shaking. the shaking stopped when the vehicle speed was reduced to 45 mph. the vehicle has not been looked at by a mechanic but the contact believes the brake calipers produce too much heat and cause rotors to warp. the current and failure mileage were 71800. updated 08/07/07*jb

Front disc brake rotors warp causing vehicle front end to shake when braking, vehicle has chrysler's latest and greatest brake pad and rotor kit installed. *jb

Brake rotors warping. i have had the rotor turn and even replaced and yet the rotors seem to warp. braking is often light never ever under emergency conditions. *cn

I own a 1999 jeep grand cherokee ltd, also referred to as wj. in the 2 years i have own this jeep certain problems came up. apart from the issue with the front brakes warping the rotors, and needing upgraded calipers and new rotors replaced. which the dc dealers didn't want to acknowledgments other issue and equally troublesome and probably dangerous is the current issue of the hvac system no working properly. this problem is very common amongst these vehicles. i have a little heat blowing on the driver side compartment, but 0 heat and all cold on the passenger and defrost. god help me if im stuck on the side of the road during the winter, which it is right now. my passengers and i would not fair well. the cold blowing from the pass. side vents and defrost is like the a/c was on. now, this issue is the blend doors are broken, chrysler and jeep both now of this issue. and the cost of the repairs of course are very high from the dealership, as it involves removing the dashboard the center console and the steering column. this has to be a recall and fix their expense at least. *nm

When i apply brakes the vehicle vibrates and shakes. daimler chrysler manufactured 1999 jeep grand cherokee automobiles with defective brake component, including calipers and rotors. when brake pedal is applied the automobile manifest pulsation and shaking causing me to loose control of the truck. i called daimler chrysler and they gave me a phone number to call which was a claims adm. 1-866-817-6522. *jb

0500302b - front brake pulsation during light to moderate brake application date: 12/16/02 (supersedes 0500302a dated june 10, 2002) model year(s): 1999-2002 (wj models built on or after may 11, 2002; wg export models built on or after august 16, 2002). description: brake roughness or pedal pulsation when the brakes are applied. the customer may experience a vibration of the steering wheel, floor, seat, instrument panel, or a minor pedal pulsation (brake roughness) under light to moderate pedal application. the condition may be caused by excessive thickness variation of the brake rotor surface. details: this bulletin involves the replacement of both front brake rotors and caliper assemblies. note: new brake rotors must be used with the new brake calipers. diagnosis: 1. determine if the front brake vibration/pulsation is caused by excessive thickness variation of either front brake rotor. 2. if excessive thickness variation of the front brake rotor is at fault perform the repair procedure. 3. if this bulletin has already been performed, and front brake pulsation/vibration is present, do not perform the repair procedure. investigate other possible cases for front brake pulsation/vibration. *nm

Dt*: the contact stated at 40 mph, the vehicle wobbled and the brakes pulsated while pressure was applied to the pedal. also, the abs light illuminated intermittently. the dealer replaced the front rotors, calipers and pads, which corrected the problem for a short time. the vehicle has been to the dealer for this problem several times to have the rotors turned or replaced. the average time between failures is about 6000 miles. in 2004 the contact took the vehicle to another dealer who replaced the rotors. again, the problem has reoccurred and the dealer determined that both the front and rear rotors needed to be replaced.

Dt*: the contact stated while depressing the brake pedal at various speeds the vehicle vibrates. the dealer has replaced the rotors four times, but did not remedy the problem. the vehicle becomes unsafe when the brakes are applied at highway speeds. it is difficult to maintain control of the vehicle. because of vibration. contact would be fearful if his wife was driving in such conditions. *ak

Dt*: the contact stated while driving at various speeds and depressing the brake pedal the steering wheel shimmied and the brake pedal pulsated. the vehicle was taken to the dealer numerous times for inspection. the dealer replaced the front and back rotors ten separate times. after each replacement of the rotors, the vehicle operated normally for six months and the brake problem reoccurred. *ak updated 5/30/2006 - *nm

Dt*: the contact stated while applying brake pressure at various speeds, there was a pulsation within the brakes. the vehicle was seen by a dealer and the rotors were replaced. the problem persisted and the vehicle was taken back to the dealer. it was determined the rotors were warped and needed to be replaced again. it got progressively worse with increased mileage until they shuddered and grabbed. the problem recurred within 5,000 miles of repairs. a kit is now available for front brakes, it includes new calipers and pads. the contact felt the rear brakes demonstrated the same problem, but not as pronounced. there is no formally recognized problem by jeep, nor a solution. *ak

Dt*: the contact stated while braking at any speed, the steering wheel shakes. the dealership replaced the rotors four times, but this has not fixed the problem. the vehicle was taken to an independent repair shop that determined the calipers need to be replaced. when shaking occurs the vehicle seems to have less stopping power. a driver unaccustomed to wheel shaking when braking could lose control of the vehicle. contact has already replaced six sets of rotors. there seems to be inherent flaw in the original brake design. the contact felt the dealer did his best to try to correct the problem. *ak

1999 jeep grand cherokee brake problems. rotors on the jeep have been turned and replaced. jeep has only 20,000 (twenty thousand) miles. jeep front end shutters violently and brake pedal pulsates when applying brakes. dealer said this is normal on jeep grand cherokee and will no longer replace rotors. he recommended i downshift to stop (automatic transmission)*jb

1999 jeep front brake problems. rotors and pads failed. continental teves style brakes causes bad shimmy or viberation in the front wheels. *nm

Dt*: the contact stated while applying the brake pedal there is a squeaking noise and the steering wheel shakes vigorously. the brake pads have been replaced twice in 10,000 miles and need to be replaced again. the dealer can not determine the problem. the vehicle is currently at an independent repair shop for replacement of the pads for a third time.

Loss of vehicle control during braking while traveling at highway speed. no injury sustained however that was only due to the skill and attentivness of the driver. failure caused by factory defective braking system. ongoing problem endemic to the vehicle, repaired four times during first 46000 miles. *nm

On 7/13/2005, my wife returned from work concerned that the brakes on her '99 jeep grand cherokee were not working properly. she said that they were not stopping the vehicle, and that the brake pedal had more travel than normal. she also said that there was a leak from the car onto the driveway. upon investigation, i determined that there was a hole in the rear brake line at a point where it was mounted onto the frame by a plastic clip. there was corrosion in the immediate vicinity of the clip, and the brake fluid was escaping through a hole in the corroded area. i have scheduled the vehicle for repair or replacement of the defective brake line. i notified the daimlerchrysler customer service department via email, and was informed that they would not repair nor replace the defective part without charge. the daimlerchrysler complaint reference number is 13791846.

Dt: consumer complained about front brake problems. the front brakes shimmied and pulsated excessively. at times, the consumer feels like he is going to lose control of the car because of the shimmy. dealer stated the rotors were warped. there are 69,000 miles on the vehicle. consumer has been having this problem since 7. the problem occurred approximately 10,000 miles after rotors have been replaced or machined.*ak

We purchased this vehicle aug 2001. by april 23 02 rotors were warped and needed turned. (36617 miles) front and rear brake pads again replaced 43734 miles. davis-moore replaced the rotors june 2 05 with 68278 miles. this means that every 16000 miles the brakes need replaced?

In 1999 jeep grand cherokee, brakes get a heavy pulsation due to apparently warped rotors. dealer resurfaced, turned rotors on three previous occasions, but problem returns about 8-10,000 miles later probably due to use of same faulty parts. car now has 103k miles and dealer won't try to fix again. when stopping, car shakes at an unsafe level.

1999 grand cherokee jeep, brake failure and head gasket replaced. *bf the consumer stated while driving and without warning, the vehicle seized up. the vehicle was towed to a garage who replaced the transfer case, rack and pinion, and spider gears. *jb

Third time in as many years the brakes (pads and rotors) have had to be replaced. violent pulsing on brake pedal, at highway speeds steering wheel shakes violently because of front brakes pulsing. major safety hazard to occupants and those in other vehicles. *jb

99 jeep gc limited 30,000 miles. replaced rear end. replaced rotors and pads 3 times. replace transmission sensor. replace hood rams. needs new front differential. *jb

When applying the brakes from 35-40 mph the vehicle would severely shake/vibrate. the vehicle was taken to the dealer. the dealer replaced the front rotors and pads. *jb

Brakes warp and car shakes and shimmies when braking. dealer has repaired 5 times and repair lasts approximately 2 months. this is an extreme hazard. chrysler will do nothing. the nhtsa has done nothing in spite of hundreds of complaints on their web site. i am sure there are thousands more that have not been reported on this site. the car is a safety risk. these cars should be recalled and the brakes totally replaced at chrysler's expense. why has nothing been done? *jb

Jeep grand cherokee front brakes continuously have rotor problems. extreme vibration/shimmy/grabbing front brakes at all speeds. dealer says warped rotors are common and nothing can be done to prevent this from happening. rotors must be urned/replaced every few thousand miles.*ak

Vehicle is a 1999 jeep grand cherokee with 61900 miles. one brake line failed as a result of corrosion at two points where it is clipped to the car's frame. brake pedal became soft and went almost to the floor. it would not pump up. *ak vehicle was taken to a firestone repair shop where the failed brake line was discovered. the line was replaced. i have the old line. this is a light use vehicle and if i had this failure, there are probably many others.

Since i owned this vehicle it has been a hazard safety for me and my family.i can honestly say im afraid even to sell it and pass the problem on to someone else.until someone gets killed is when jeep will finally due something about it.the brakes and rotors are constantly warping or failing.constant shuddering/vibrating in slow speed stop and high speed decelaration stop.on this site alone there is 326 complaints about the same issue, but nothing is being done.dealer just turns rotors and fixes pads.how many times do you actually turn a rotor.come on already.there is a class action lawsuit against chrysler in effect right now as im writing this.it is only valid for kansas/missour residents only.hello the rest of the country has the same problem with the cherokee.rotors and pads have been serviced only nothing else.i took the vehicle to another brake shop for a second opinion.they stated to me the rotors are not appropriate for this vehicle and jeep should have replaced them along with new calipers.all a want is an end to this problem.i replaced the rotors and pads again at my expense.still same problem.i previously had 2 jeeps before earlier models with no problems.i guess chrysler has lost another customer.*ak

I purchased this jeep used with around 25k miles on it. after bout 1 year of driving my rotors started to vibrate when brake applied. after a couple days of this my drivers side brake caliper locked up while my family and i were out for a ride. i pulled over to see my rotor glowing red, i left the vehicle parked there over night replaced rotor, pads, and a new caliper. within 2 months same thing occurred with the passenger side, so i fixed that side. since the original problem i've replaced both rotors 3 times and pads 4 times in less than 8 months. dealer says there is nothing wrong with brake system, i disagree. after researching this on the internet i see that a lot of owners have the exact same problem. i can not see how a manufacturer can get away with these kind of problems. i know that if the company i work for had built and sold faulty products we would be sued and out of business. why is this company allowed to get away with these obvious malfunctions of one of the key components in safety on a car, the brakes. thanks for any and all help. *jb

Had occasionally heard a sound outside the vehicle like a hose letting off air ... figured it was the compressor. today, i got in the vehicle and backed out of my garage and heard a steady flow of air that sometimes rose and fell in pitch. i determined that a flexible housing covering the linkage from the brake pedal to the master cylinder vacuum booster had burst open after what appears to be shearing from continual wear on the rubber boot itself. i do not know what this is caused by or how serious it is. i still have brakes, but under what conditions i do not know. the shearing of this rubber by the mechanism itself appears to be something that could be in common with any grand cherokee. please let me know what your find out. *jb

4th time i'm replacing rotors/pads on '99 jeep gr cherokee, vehicle has 52,000 miles...replacing rotors every 10,000 miles? ridiculous!!!! braking on the highway at around 55 mph, whole vehicle shudders with high chance of lost of control of front end. this is a life threatening defect, why isn't jeep doing something?

The front brake rotors wore out prematurely. the dealership repaired the problem twice, but problem recurred. *ak *sc

Had front brakes serviced may 2003 new rotors, pads. august 2004 had to have new calipers, pads and rotors resurfised. because calipers failed and almost started tire on fire. told there is a service bulliten ref putting on different calipers. *ak

Brakes pulsate and steering wheel shakes - dealer has repaired 4 times - vehicle only has 25,500 miles. say manufacturing defect but will no longer repair as there has not been a recall on vehicle. since there are so many reports of this - why has there not been a recall? there has not been a crash, but with faulty brakes, it can only be a matter of time. how can jeep get away with this - they know and acknowledge the problem. *ak

Front brake rotors continuously warping on my 1999 jeep grand cherokee. chrysler refuses to ultimately fix the problem or continue to pay for repairs. brakes vibrate loudly when breaking at speeds above 35 mph. vehicle has been in for this problem 3 times and car only has 36,000+ miles on it. repairs only last a few months before problem recurs rather suddenly, causing brakes to "shimmy" with loud vibrations. chrysler refuses to accept responsibility and attributes it to "driver habits/patterns". my local jeep service shop says they are caught in the middle. they are well aware of the problem but can't get the parent company to accept responsibility. *jb

Dealer replaced at 11,000 miles the front rotors and pads. at 16,000 miles, the front rotors and pads were replaced. at 35,000 miles the rotors were resurfaced and the pads were replaced. at 45, 000 miles the dealership indicated they needed to replace the calipers, and install a bigger caliper. *ak the warping front rotors caused pulsating brake pedal and an uncontrollable steering wheel. *sc *nm

The brake rotors on 1999 jeep grand cheerokee warped every 7-10,000 miles. this is well documented on the web. jeep has issued all new brake parts (rotors, pads, calipers) but refuses to pay for the retrofit.*ak

Continued problem with significant front brakes pulsation during light to moderate braking. at times, steering wheel vibrates violently. learned of how common the problem was from this web site within a year after purchasing vehicle new in 1998. kept hoping for jeep to step up and accept responsibility. nursed original parts to 68k miles waiting for jeep to come up with better solution than frequent replacment of rotors. finally, in 2002, new service bulletin called for replacing calipers with new design. new caliper and rotors installed nov 2002, 20k miles later, problem returned. spoke to local service managers, no solution. spoke with jeep corporate hq, no solution.*ak

Brakes do not react properly when trying to stop. rotors and pads were serviced at least three times. manufacturer examined vehicle, and stated no defects were found.*ak

99 jeep grand cherokee with engine problems customer states that the rpm's would immediately go up to the 200 or sometimes higher as soon as he starts up the car and also accelerate when the brakes are applied**cc the consumer stated various parts were replaced, however the problem returned. the consumers wife was driving, when all of a sudden the vehicle started to accelerate on its own, she applied the brakes as hard as she could, however the vehicle continued to proceed in a forward motion. the only solution was to place the vehicle into park. after placing the vehicle in park, the consumers wife placed it in drive again and immediately it started to accelerate uncontrollably. applying the brakes with full force did not solve the problem. when aaa arrived and started the vehicle, nothing happened. the sudden acceleration happened again while the consumers daughter was driving. during one of the sudden acceleration incidents, the consumers wife was injured. the right front wheel speed sensor was replaced. the coolant radiator fan relay and water pump were replaced. the air bag light was on, the transmission seal was leaking. the fuel pump was replaced. the right and left hub bearing were replaced. *jb

I bought a "5-star certifed " low mileage 1999 jeep grand cherokee from russwood motors. lincoln, ne. brake pulsation was noted on test drive, and dealer agreed to correct before delivery. again after a short time and very few miles, the puslation reappeared. russwood again agreed to correct this. later this pulsation came back, worse. i had the brakes serviced at another location. later, last winter the pulsation became progressivley worse. in south texsas for the winter, we elected to wait till we returned to nebraska so russwood could permanently correct the problem. russwood advised the repair was covered by jeep service bulletin 05-003-02-rev.b (and prior), my warranty had just expired, and the repair would be at my expense, amounting to about $600. i telephoned the jeep customer serivice line and got a terse reply that jeep would not assume any responsibility nor expense for the service bulletin repair. i emailed the jeep customer service and got another terse reply reporting my problem had "already been addressed" and they would file my commnication. jeep will perform this repair if i have to call in ralph nader. jeep by their bulletin acknowledges a known safety problem and an original design deficiency. application of brakes at highway speeds results in a wild shimmying and dodging. it must be corrected. *ak

Brake problems on 1999 jeep grand cherokee.rotors warped as per defect on calipers. jeep made a fix or i, but makes you pay for it. must change rotors everytime brakes are changed due to defect. this also affects braking. this is what caused accident. brakes will pulsate when rotors warp, and make braking harder.*ak

Braking shudder at 55 mph and higher caused by apparent rotor warping. this warpage has happened several times; therefore, rotors have been turned several times to present at which time now i needed replacement. with new replacement rotors it is still exhibiting violent shudder. technical service bulletin has addressed this problem with suggestion to replace another item as well, a caliper assembly but there is no recall on this matter. my wife is scared to drive this on the freeway for fear of the violent shudder. i am surprised at the lack of chrysler to recall this vehicle for this problem. i am simply amazed at the amount of complaints you have received to this date on this matter and yet no response. *la

Loss of brakes. the brake pedal went all the way to the floor. *nm

While driving there was severe vibration in the front end of the vehicle. dealership replaced the rotors and pads six times, but problem recurred. *ak

While braking 50-60 mph there was heavy vibration in the front end. the dealership was notified, but did not resolve the problem. *ak
