We have classified the 37 complaints from 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee about SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC into the following categories.
We have had the rotors "shaved" at 12,000 miles, supposedly replaced at 22,000 miles and started having problems again at 31000 miles car vibrates violently, driver seat belt keeps jamming, the differential had to be replaced and the fuel pump had to be replaced
Front brake rotors warping every 8,000 miles causing dangerous front-end vibration when braking at highway speeds.*ak
There was vibration in steering and extended braking distance when braking, also noise. dealer replaced front rotors. in oct 2000, vehicle was taken to dealer for same problem, at that time dealer turned rotors.*ak *slc
Premature wear of front brake rotors, resulting in poor steering. dealer has inspected vehicle. *ak
Brake pedal was shuddering/pulsating at any speed when brakes were applied. dealership informed consumer that front/ left and right brake rotors were warped with 24,000 miles on them. please provide any additional information/attachments. *ak
No summary listed for above vehicle. *ak
Rotor/brake pad failure. *ak
One year after front brake rotor warpage and rotor replacement, front brake rotors are warped again. current mileage is 41203. rotors have warped after only 10,000 miles and less than one year. *ak
The front rotors continue to prematurely warp every 6 to 7k since purchase of vehicle.*ak
I leased my 1999 jeep grand cherokee in december of 1998. in august of 1999, the dealer had to machine the rotors at 11,200 miles (the pads were fine). in january 2000, the dealer replaced the front and rear rotors at 19,062 miles (again, the pads were fine). in june 2000, the dealer had to replace the front rotors at 27,324 miles (as usual, the pads were ok). now that it is out-of-warranty, i had the jeep checked by our mechanic. in april 2001, he had to replace the rear rotors at 38,500 miles. i did need pads this time. based on the reports of faulty rotors on the 1996, 1997, and 1998 jeep grand cherokees, i believe that daimlerchrysler should issue a recall on the 1999 jeep grand cherokee. i also want to be reimbused by them.*ak
Steering wheel would jerk violently due to warped rotors on brakes. dealer shaved down the rotors as a remedy. please provide further information.*ak
Vehicle pulsated when brakes were applied. rotors were already resurfaced and replaced within a 3 year period. *ak
Warped rotors at 15,000 on my 1999 jeep grand cherokee. front rotors replaced with new style brakes, but warped again at another 15,xxx miles.*ak
Consumer replaced under warranty rotors at 10,000 miles. rotors needed to be replace at 19,000 miles because vehicle shook real badly when trying to stop.vehicle should be covered under warranty up/ until 36,000 miles. dealer was trying to say it was normal wear and tear to avoid paying for it.*ak
Brake rotor has broken, causing pedal to surge and jerk in steering wheel.*ak *yh
Front rotors warped and car vibrates badly when braking on freeway. front rotors resurfaced @ 11,117 miles, front rotors and pads replaced @ 20,126 miles, and front rotors replaced @ 32,314 miles. car shakes dangerously when coming to a stop off freeway or speeds of around 40+ mph.*ak
In march of 2001, i noticed that there was a severe shaking when i applied the brakes at between 45-55 mph. not being one to take chances, i took my jeep in to have it checked. they said that the rotors needed resurfacing. this was done at a cost of over $200. about 2 months later, the same thing happened. this time i took it to a dealership, thinking that they might do a better job of fixing the problem. they again resurfaced the rotors for $300+. this lasted for about 4 months until november, when the same thing happened. this time it happened while my wife was driving and nearly caused an accident on the freeway as she was unaware of how the brakes would react. this time they said all my brakes - front and back were shot and i had them replaced at a cost of $600+. at no time did chrysler ever mention there might be something wrong. i ended up turning the vehicle back in 4 months early because i did not want to go through that again and i had no confidence that it wouldn't. i thought i jsut had bad luck until i started researching this on the web and found numerous complaints about this amongst other things that had gone wrong with my jeep. this was the most serious of those problems both safety-wise and monetarily-wise.*ak
At 8000 miles, brakes were pulsating badly. dealer turned rotors "as a courtesy" without addressing the underlying problem. now, at 19000 miles, i am having to replace all four brakes in their entirety; rotors, calipers, pistons, etc. local brake shop says chrysler uses plastic sleeves in their pistons instead of metal. this causes overheating and warping of piston which results in warping of rotors. this repair will be approximately $1000.00. local brake shop says this is a design flaw on chrysler's part. would appreciate investigation of this problem. not only is it expensive, but my brakes were shot....emergency stopping very much in question. thank you. *ak
Vibration in vehicle when braking. rotors were replaced, then turned. at this time, there is vibration again when braking. *ak
Brakes pulsate/ steering vibrates when applying brakes. took vehicle to dealer, and they wanted to turn rotors. but, consumer felt that this will not correct problem. *ak
First report may have stated some other brake component...if i didn't know the exact part when reporting the failure....second report did state rotors, this is the 3rd report of failure. *ak
Brakes will not hold, there is a defect inside of brake area, dealership is aware of problem.*ak
When applying brakes vehicle will start to shake. this usually happens at speeds of 40 mph and over. dealer found rotors were warped.*ak *tt
Rotors have been replaced three times already since date it was purchased. when applying brakes vehicle will start to shake badly before stopping.*ak
While driving 55-60 mph, applied brakes and vehicle started to shake. mechanic stated rotors needed to be replaced. many jeeps were experiencing these problems. *ak the rotors were turned or replaced three times. *yh
While driving could step on brake pedal and steering wheel will shake. brake rotors had to be replaced three times already. *ak all shock absorbers need replacement at 23,000 miles. *yh

Severe pulsation at highway speed when applying brakes. vehicle been into dealer. *ak
1999 jeep grand cherokee chronic brake system problem the front wheels _x0011_pulsate_x0012_ and the steering shimmies when the brakes are applied at highway speeds. safety is a major concern since the problem becomes more pronounced under urgent braking conditions. jeep service has made six (6) attempts to fix the problem without success. history:the jeep service department has made six (6) unsuccessful attempts to fix the problem only to have it reappear approximated 5,000 miles after each service attempt. the warranty period for the brake system has now expired and in spite of the six failed attempts _x0016_ the jeep service area manager has suggested that he can no longer continue to pay the cost of these service calls and it will become my responsibility. i have rejected his last service recommendation that would require me to pay for new brake pads and installation labor, while jeep service would replace the defective rotors at no charge. there has been no reassurance that this would resolve the problem. problem diagnosis: the cause of the _x0011_pulsating_x0012_ problem has been attributed to a condition that is causing the brake rotors to over-heat and then warp. the six (6) attempts to correct the problem have entailed four (4) front wheels rotor resurfacing experiments, one (1) front wheels rotor replacement and one (1) recommendation this week to replace the rotors again. the service representative has suggested that the vehicle driver is misapplying the brakes and causing the problem. (this is pure speculation and an unsubstantiated accusation) my position is that a jeep brake system design or product failure exists that has not yet been identified and at this time there is no known solution to the problem. resolution:my first preference is that jeep fix the problem and allow me to enjoy the vehicle i selected to purchase almost two years ago. an alternative would be for jeep to continue making the necessary repairs to the brake system until they solve the problem. *ak
When applying brake vehicle would wobble. to dealer who rotated tires. this did not remedy problem, dealer then inspected rotors and found them warped.*ak
Brakes pads are causing rotors to warp, dealership is aware of problem.*ak *slc
Hard pulsation when applying brakes most noticeable at higher speeds. two identical defects in about five months. two different service centers repaired same by re-facing rotors. one in fl and the other in nj. *ak
Brake rotors prematurely warped. braking at high speeds cuases significant steering wheel shimmying. brakes squeal and vehicle shudders when brakes applied at lower speeds.*ak
Front end shimmy, brake pedal pulsation while slowing. dealer claims driver habits warped rotors. current tsb recognizes problem. on wheel turning of rotor and retrofit kit for caliper to pull pads off rotor to allow cooling. had to fight with dealer to get any type of service without paying. *ak
While applying brakes vehicle hestitates and pulsates in front. *ak consumer stated that the brakes were fixed once, but still the vehicle and the steering wheel shakes. *yh
Brakes have been a problem for the past 8 months but was told that i may not be driving jeep "properly". the brakes would squeak, steering would shudder, occasionally brake would lose pressure at a stop & the sound of metal on metal heard. brakes were checked with no reported problem. i had to replace brakes & rotors as it was difficult to control the vehicle &another incident of brakes going to floor at a stop sign. dealer said its normal for brakes/rotors to be replaced at this time(it's poor quality materials in rotors in my opinion) & since they can't reproduce the brake problem, there is no problem.
Warped brake rotors. *ak
Dt: 1999 jeep grand cherokee. the vehicle has 48,677 miles currently. at 14,754 miles they resurfaced the front brake rotors and replaced the pads, this was on october 18, 2000. then on july 15, 2002, at 28,186 miles the front brake rotors had to be replaced and the pads. on may 3, 2004 at 42,123 miles, the rotors had to be resurfaced and replace the pads. on monday, july 11, 2005 at 48,502 miles the vehicle was taken in for a lube job and the consumer asked to have the brakes checked because he felt pulsation in the brake. she was told the rotors need to be replaced again and new pads would be needed. the dealership states the brakes are not covered under the warranty because they are considered wear and tear items and only covered for 12 months or 12,000 miles. after speaking with the district service manager, she was reimbursed, $211, for the work done on may 3, 2004. according to the service department, this model is having problems with the front brake system. it is due to the fact that they are no longer made of asbestos. when she called the manufacturer, all they did was read the warranty to him. *ak there was a vibration under the vehicle, pulsation from the brakes, a leaking transfer case, rear differential leak, vibration in the front end, a slight brake pulsation, regular pulsation from the brakes, grinding sound rear end, and radiator leaking. *sc *tt
Consumer has replaced brakes twice; first time 2 years ago. brakes needed to be replaced again. 2 months ago, brakes were replaced. vehicle vibrate when the brakes applied. mechanic was saying that front brakes were warped.*ak
What a lemon! we are averaging $2000/year in repairs. power windows that stop working, water pump breaks, brake rotors need replacing before brakes wear out, leaking differential, transmission, and now we're told by dealer service department we need a new transfer case. whoever designed/built/sold this vehicle doesn't have much pride in their workmanship.
I have done some limited research and have found that daimar-chrysler has isued a technical service bulletin for this problem. i feel this is a major safety problem since it involves the brakes and the rotors are warping for no apparent reason. if the metal in the rotors cannot handle the heat and warp, what effect does this have on the molecular structure of the rotor? will it break apart next time? their fix for the problem is to "turn" or grind the rotors. sure fixes problem for a period of time. this is second time in about 10,000 miles. thanks!
Goodyear wrangler tire (p225 75 r16 st) experienced blowout. *slc
1999 (and more years) jeep grand cherokee, severe brake problem. causing extremely violent shaking of the steering wheel at speeds over 40mph. every few thousand miles, the brakes (rotors, pads etc) need to be replaced. chrysler/jeep replaces the brakes under warranty as many times as needed. however, once warranty is up, (3/36) they refuse to acknowledge it and the consumer picks up the bill now. chrylser has admitted to it being a problem ( ref. tsb's: #050599 06/18/99 "match mounting brake rotors" #0500302b 12/16/02 "front brake pulsation during light to moderate brake application") and there either needs to be a permanent fix or stand behind their defective vehicles and pay for the brakes having to be done every few thousand miles. i have had my brakes replaced 5 (five) times and i have under 47,000 miles on my jeep.
I have had to replace my rotors 3 times in 2 years on my jeep, grand cherokee. there is a pulsating effect when i attempt to stop.. i feel that this a very severe saftey problem and i think that chrysler should own up to there problems with the rotors and have an across the board recall or they could end up in the same boat as firestone / ford. i fear for the saftey of the occupants of mine and other peoples vehicles when they are force to drive a jeep with faulty rotors and braking systems. must someone die before something is done??? i think that a recall should start now. i should not have to pay for something that is a major saftey problem. chrysler is making us pay because they say that the vehicle has over 12000 miles on it. this is a travesty of justice. *ak
I repeatedly took vehicle to dealership for service, on all visits they told me there were no problems at all, and car was safe, well, brakes failed and i hit a truck, and airbags didn't come out. i could have died if i was on the highway and they failed.*ak
The front end of the car vibrate during slow down and pressing of the brakes.
Disc brake rotors warp with high frequency causing 'shimmy' during braking which can lead to loss of control. today i took my vehicle in to the shop for the second time with this problem. three other owners were in the shop today with the same problem. when i calledjeep's customer support line, they claimed it was just a normal wear item. nhtsa item # sb602194 understates the severity of this problem and its frequency. please follow up! this seems like an unsafe design defect.*ak
All four brake rotors wore out excessively which has caused vibration in steering wheel when applying brakes. brake rotors have been resurfaced every ten thousand miles. consumer has contacted dealer, and dealer has turned the rotors. however, problem still occurs.*ak consumer states air conditioner was not cold enough. *slc
I had a pulsation/roughness when braking. the front rotors were found to have two to four 1/2 to 1 inch cracks coming from the center hub holes. if these cracks went undetected, it would of caused a serious accident. the dealership and daimlerchrysler are stating the reason why i'm having the problems is because of my first brake job, done only about 10,000 miles ago. they said that non-mopar pads (wagner) were used. my mechanic checked the pads, which are still like new, and found nothing wrong. i have had 5 cherokees to date and my mechanic has always used wagner and has had no problems. in doing research on 1999 jgc rotors, there have been many complaints on these rotors. even in pass years they have had recalls for rotors on jgc. there was a recall for rotors on 96-98 jgc, vehicles made 7/95-10/98. my 1999 jgc was manufactured in 11/98, which is only one month different from the recall. couid these be the same rotors? it has been even noted on tsb with 1999 jeeps that there have been brake/rotor problems. i think there should be a recall on these rotors because of the safety issue and the many noted complaints that have been received. i think they are using inferior metal for these rotors. *ak
Premature warpage of front brake rotors, excessive wear on front and rear brake pads.
