There is a random feeling during acceleration and stand-still of which feels like a down-shifting beneath the suv. i have had it looked at by several different dealers and they all just give me the 'run-around'. i think there is something workng and no one wants to fix it because it might prove costly.*ak

I pulled out of a gas station onto a major busy street and accelerated the car and passed a major busy intersection. as i accelerated the vehicle, i heard a loud boom coming from the front of the car and was startled by the loud boom. as i passed the intersection i noticed that all of a sudden i have no control of the steering wheel whatsoever(it locked up). i tried to pull over to the right passing some parked vehicles on the street & there were a lot of vehicles behind me. i managed to move the car to the right, with my foot on the brake, without hitting a parked car in front of me. my front right tire of the car crashed into the curb and stopped. the car was parked at an angle not parallel to the curb and i was afraid that some other car might hit me from behind because of the way my car was stopped. i was shaken up a lot and when finally got out of the car i saw fluids leaking out from the front of my car onto the street. a couple of people came out of a business storefront and saw the fluids leaking out fast onto the street.one guy said that was oil leaking and could not see anything else. it was already dark (around 5 p.m. pst).i called my husband and both my husband & my brother came to the location to see what was wrong and both couldn't figure out why oil was leaking. the car could not start and a tow truck was called and towed the car to a jeep dealer (where we normally have the car serviced) in alhambra.the following day the jeep dealer's mechanics examined the vehicle and they said the whole engine was taken out and that apparently there's a hole at the bottom of the engine block. three days later my cousin (also a mechanic) was able to look at the engine and said that the connecting rod inside the engine broke and thus made a hole on the side of the engine. we also have the car service at a jeep dealer with oil change every 3,000 miles and do all the mfg recommendation. in feb. '01 we had the car serviced for the 20,000 maintainence service.*ak

While at a stop applied brakes, consumer heard a grinding noise. then, vehicle suddenly surged forward. consumer kept foot on brake, but could not stop vehicle. he had to shut off engine. vehicle at dealer at this time. *ak dealer states that there are no problems with the vehicle. *slc

While applying brakes to stop vehicle shot forward out of control until turned off key--driver suffered severe trauma to nerves---out of control when in park

Exiting interstate, approaching stop sign, engine rpms did not decrease after release of foot-feed. . had to "stand" on brake to keep from going through intersection. shifted into neutral, then into park. rpms then returned to normal idle speed for a stopped vehicle.*ak

Vehicle has been to dealer 5 times now for very rough idle, engine sag, idle undershoot, etc. pcm has been reprogrammed with current software, etc. dealer called chrysler and was told no fix is available for this condition. vehicle shakes and tries to die. very unsafe to drive as may die when trying to pull out. dealer basically says chrysler knows of the problem but won't fix it properly.*ak

When slowing down at a red light with foot applied to brake pedal vehicle suddenly accelerated, cause unknown. dealer cannot identify the probelm. *ak

The car was in neutral:the air conditioner was on: my foot was on the brake. with my foot on the brake, the car was placed into drive. the wheels spun and left rubber tracks as long as 24" on the pavment although my foot was not on the accelerator. with the car careening forward, i depressed the brake pedal with as much force as possible, but the car did not respond and continued forward.the vehicle stopped only when it went through the wall of my garage.the air bag did not deploy. my foot was never on the accelerator. as soon as the car stopped, i checked the location of my feet and i confirmed that the accelerator was not being depressed. i had the police come and prepare an acident report which recorded the acceleration marks that remained on my driveway as a result of the sudden and high acceleration which was incurred. *ak

While switching the vehicle from neutral to drive owner put foot on gas pedal and the vehicle took off. owner applied brakes and vehicle kept going until stopping on its own will. engine still revved while being stopped with the brakes. dealer said there was no problem. *ak

Brakes vibrate at high speed and cause lurching at low speed. rotors refaced twice and replaced once. now problem has returned. after reviewing the nhtsa web site and finding numerous other complaints, it is obvious this is not an isolated incident but a recurring problem on this vehicle. it should be fixed!*ak

Intermittent engine idle problem. occurs when engine is fully warmed up and in gear and at a full stop. engine idle speed will fluctuate between 300 & 600 rpm . when this happens, engine roughness is very noticable and on occassion it will stall. on the first visit to the dealer, the computer was reprogrammed as per a tsb. this did not solve the problem. second visit, chrysler advised the dealer to replace throttle position sensor. again the problem still exists. the dealer has notified chrysler and is still waiting for an answer. *ak

While applying brakes vehicle suddenly accelerated out of control, resulting in a collision. dealer has inspected and repaired vehicle. *ak

On both failures the jeep was in park, with the brake on and the engine idling. the car literally took off in reverse and both times was only stopped by fences. both times the vehicle was on flat ground. i reported the first incidence to the dealer and they said that if i couldn't prove it, they weren't responsible and therefore i would have to pay for the damage. i did not report the second incidence, but i have also not fixed the damage. i am terrified to drive the vehicle. scc ***dimsii ivoq entry posted after 12/12/02 cut-over to artemis****747979

Rotors have warped after about 7000 to 8000 miles resulting in lurching when trying to stop vehicle. front rotors have been replaced twice and all rotors resurfaced 4 times by dealer, 3 times under warranty and 3 times at my expense. as rotors get bad, stopping distances increase and vehicle is difficult to control when stopping from highway speeds. vehicle has only been driven in florida, and has not been driven in salt water or off-road. first problem reported to dealer when vehicle was 8 months old and had 9294 miles on odometer. the problem recurred again, each time, approximately 7000 to 9000 miles following the last brake service.*ak

Repeated problems with ac/heat being erratic, will take vehicle in for 4th time. vehicle shuddered, fixed by changing fluid. weather seal fell off. brake shudder fixed by replacement of rotors, etc. engine stalled fixed, but the rev up and lurch at stop is not yet. setting another appointment with service. *ak

Vehicle lunges forward slightly when stopped at a stop-light or when vehicle is in gear but not in motion when brake pedal is depressed.

Racing when shifting from 2nd to 3rd, dealer replaced transmission, happening again + clunking sound when shifting to lower gears or stopping. *ak

When taking off from a complete stop, accelerator locked up, causing the vehicle to accelerate to a high rate of speed. after colliding with a couple of vehicles and a fire hydrant, vehicle slowed down. after applying the parking brake, vehicle came to a stop. the manufacturer has been notifed about the problem. report given by liza delcampo at state farm insurance. tsb# 18-40-98 *ak

While slowing down to stop at a red light, the vehicle downshifted (auto) properly. at approx. 15 - 20 mph while the brake was depressed the engine revved up as if to take off. i shifted to neutral and the tachometer almost red lined. (similar to the audi 5000 problem early 80's.) the second time this happened was after making a u-turn on a dead-end street and proceeding to stop at a stop sign. both feet were on the brake pedal. the vehicle has been towed back to the dealer on 07/06 with 116 miles on the odometer. outcome still pending.

While driving 35 mph vehicle suddenly accelerated, consumer applied brakes, but this did not stop vehicle. consumer kept pushing brake pedal to floor, and after a few seconds, vehicle slowed down. mileage was 3000. this happened again on 4 aug 2001 while driving about 5 mph in a parking garage, vehicle accelerated while in reverse. applied brakes, but there was no braking action. vehicle came to a stop when it hit another vehicle. damage to jeep was $5700.00, damage to other vehicle unknown at this time. both times, no injuries.*ak *slc

Vehicle has suffered from warped rotors which were replaced twice on the front and once on the rear. no problems since 12998 miles. but i consider this to be due to poor quality. main issue reoccurring ,stalling problems while stopped in drive. vehicle has been in three times for checks to throttle body (cleaned and once replaced), software revisions and other settings, but stalling continued to manifest itself. has stalled 3 times in the last 3 weeks. contacted daimler chrysler who kept referring me to the dealer. but after multiple visits i have no confidence in their ability to address this problem. *ak

When speed control is engaged, at any speed, throtle surges ahead 2-7 mph. very dangerous in traffic! chrysler shop manual confirms this problem on all jeeps. chrysler refuses to fix problem.

As my husband shifted from park to reverse, our new jeep lurched or accelerated so quickly that the tires squealed and smoked. we aren't sure if it "jumped" out of park or if as it went into reverse it was accelerated or floored. i was thrown from the vehicle, severe concussion, dislocated jaw, etc... manufacturer and dealer have inspected and find the vehicle "mechanically sound". we are afraid to drive it ever again.
