We have classified the 37 complaints from 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee about SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC into the following categories.
Brake problems with 99 jeep grand cherokee. i have replaced my rotors 3 times since purchasing this vehicle used. dc has a tsb for this problem, but will only perform it if under 35000. this problem of warped rotors is a danger to myself and the public. please force dc to correct this problem. *jb
I purchased a brand new suv, grand cherokee, in 1999. since then, i've to repair or replace the rotor every single year. the problem is that the steering wheel will shake when i step on the brake from speed >50 mph. when the vehicle was less than 36,000 miles, the dealer graciously fixed the problems without charge. less than a year ago, i had to fix the same problem for a few hundred dollars for it's >36,000 miles. the dealer told me that jeep has improved the rotor design and i should not have the same problem. but now i have the same problem again. my friend owns the same model and it has the same problem. i called jeep but was told that it's not a defect. so, as a consumer, am i supposed to fix the rotor once every 9 months? my other vehicles do not have that problem. *nlm
The dealer recommended the front brake rotors, pads, and calipers on my 1999 jeep grand cherokee be replaced at a cost of $400. this is due to a service bulletin issued by chrysler in early 2002. although chrysler recommends this kit for 1999 jeep grand cherokees, it will only cover the cost of this change for vehicles currently under warranty. the dealer told me the original caliper design was a two piston arrangement that applied uneven pressure to the rotor through the brake pads resulting in uneven wear on the rotors. the new caliper is a four piston design that applies pressure in a more evenly distributed fashion. an inadequate design of the front brake caliper that results in uneven wear is a safety issue the cost of which should be covered by chrysler for all vehicles containing this problem. i was advised by chrylser that if a recall is issued in the future i would be reimbursed. *nlm
Consumer complained about a transfer case problem. when driving at approximately 40 mph there was a loud clanking sound coming from the front undercarriage. consumer took the vehicle back to the dealer, and was told the vehicle had dusty brake pads, but that was not the issue. then, consumer was told that the constant velocity joints were leaking. also, consumer was told that the driveshaft needed to be replaced. consumer felt that the dealership did not know what the problem was, and perhaps was covering up the real problem. *ak recall campaign; component: fuel system, gasoline:fuel injection system:injectors. the consumer stated that the vehicle would not start. the consumer stated that the engine had an extended crank before starting. fuel pump assembly and pump crank repair kit installed. the consumer stated that there is a shimmy when the brakes are applied. when sitting at a stop light having the vehicle in gear it vibrates. the left outer cv boot was leaking. the engine light came on. the consumer stated that the transmission slams into gear. *tc
I know you don't care and will do nothing to remedy this safety defect, but just so i can say that i told you. the brake rotors for the 1999 jeep grand cherokee laredo are no good and warp within 3 to 6,000 miles. the operators as well as other drivers are put in danger when the vehicle goes out of control as the wheel is pulled from your hands and swerves as the steering wheel vibrates. the dealers do not offer any permanent repairs and charge the customer to turn the rotors again and again. with each episode others are put in danger, again and again. i guess someday we'll have to replace the nhtsa with a japanese group too, because you are about as effective as the american auto mfgrs in causing an improvement. *nlm
Brake rotors had to be replaced at 37,000 miiles. they had warpped badly. problem started about 24000 miles but i had to wait until i could afford to replace them as it is expensive. at highway speeds when applying the brakes the vehicle steering shock violently. this is a very unsafe condition. *jb
When the brake was applied, the vehicle experienced extended stopping distance.*jb
A 1999 jeep grand cherokee with 28000 miles developed a grinding noise in the right front wheel. upon inspection at a local service station it was found that all four rotors on the vehicle were cracked.i contacted chrysler customer assistance to inform them of the problem and a dangerous situation and was informed that since the warranty was only 12,000miles , that there was nothing they would do. i feel that this is a very dangerous situation and that the rotors were probably defective from the manufacturer.
Faulty brake rotors have been a systemic problem on this vehicle. the symptom is severe pulsation which worsens over time causing the vehicle to lurch and/or be unstable while braking. rotors were turned or replaced at 10000 miles, 18000 miles, 31000 miles, and 35000 miles. at 36k miles, my warranty ran out and jeep would not fix this any longer at no cost. i incurred an expense of $351.90 at 52k miles and another $544.76 at 69k miles. the final repair was a full brake replacement with "new designed" parts (routers and calipers) and appeared to fix the problem. at 80000 miles, the problem is back somewhat and is worsening over time. continuing to pay for repairs of a systemic problem with routers warping due to high heat should not be the reponsibilty of the consumer. *ak
1999 jeep grand cherokee shakes violently when brakes are applied. on 13 nov 02 brake assembly was replaced by chrysler under tsb 05-003-02 front brake pulsation during light to moderate brake application all 1999-2002 grand cherokee wj models built through may 10, 2002 came equipped with brake calipers made by teves. due to poor caliper centering, the teves calipers caused the rotors to warp, a problem that has plagued grand cherokees. the dealer put on the same defective part listed above i.e teves calipers. the jeep grand cherokee continues to shake violently when brakes are applied, due to a defective part. *nm
While traveling about 30mph on the highway and without prior warning. the check engine light came on and the abs braking light appear on the dashboard. there was smoke coming from the front passenger side wheel. the dealership is aware of the problem. ts
Dt: the contact stated the rotors were continually warping. the rotors have been changed three times. the contact to the vehicle to local mechanic for service. when the rotors warped the vehicle vibrated while driving. this has been an ongoing problem for the past two years. the manufacturer has not been contacted.*ak
During four years of ownership of a 1999 jeep grand cherokee, i have had 5 replacements of rotors. causing serious vibrations of the wheels, steering and the entire auto. *nlm
When braking hard the vehicle's front end vibrated severely. there is a tsb 05-003-02 for this issue. *nlm
4 wheel drive failure on snowy incline vehicle came out of 4 wheel low , lost control of vehicle and vehicle slid backwards at least 75 to 100 ft. into an embankment. prior to this failure, i was coming up snowy driveway the night before and had vehicle in 4 wheel low and vehicle would not make it up hill and slid backwards on me, at that time i thought it was due to my driving however the next day it occurred again and realized that vehicle had kicked out of 4 wheel drive and only rear wheels working. premature wearing of front brake pads and rotors causing vehicle to vibrate, shimmy and squeal when appling brakes. dt
Rotors have been changed three times, but problems still reoccurring. dealer has been notified.*ak
While driving over 50mph and applying brakes steering wheel will rock side to side vibrating heavily, and it will be hard for the consumer to control vehicle. dealer notified.*ak
When driving at high speeds the vehicle shimmys, also when slowing down. took vehicle to jeep and they replaced rotors and calipers. consumer states problem was still occuring. the dealer is now replacing the bearings. please provide any further information. ts
Chronic brake warpage. with in 30,000 miles i have replaced both front rotors 3 times and rear rotors twice. each set of rotors was turned at least twice before being replaced. tsb performed by dealership with no affect. brakes will show signs of warpage in approximately 200 miles. by 1500 miles they are intolerable.*ak
While traveling down a mountain road, gaining speed, put car into 2nd gear in order to slow down and not over-use the brakes...car suddenly bolted back and brakes locked up and became unresponsive. i steered out of hitting the median , (it was a windy mountain road), but hit the back of a tractor trailor.. i was then hit from behind by another tractor-trailor and projected fowared. i was able to manuever over to shoulder of road. placed car's transmission in park..but it continued to move foward !!! i had minor aches and pains, car sustained at least $9500 worth of collission damage. told repair to check brakes and transmission...they said everything ok.. i did not do anything unusual in this driving experience. i am extremely fearful of the vehicle. it is still in shop waiting for final estimate. i want to make sure the frame and brakes and transmission are ok before i consider using vehicle again. my confidence is lost. can jeep respond and let me know why this happened...will they buy-back ? it is on extended warranty til january 2003 or 43,000 miles. i just purchased in january of 2002. i now realize many jeeps have many problems.*ak
Vehicle pulsates while braking. consumer has had to replace rotors every 12000-14000 miles. consumer has had rotors replaced 4 times. *ak
The brake rotors on this make of car do not last more than one year before being to fail. *ak
Same problem as nhtsa recall no. 00v136/chrysler recall no. 879 -- will not honor for this vehicle. *ak
While driving at 45-50 mph the vehicle started pulling to the right, steering wheel shimmied, and smoke came from under the hood. the dealership indicated that the brake calipers had locked up and caught on fire. dealership replaced the calipers, rotor, pads etc,. problem recurred. *nlm
6 rotors machined or replaced in two years, 2000 to 2002. *ak
Since i purchased the 1999 jeep grand cherokee excessive pulsation and vibration have been evident when applying the brakes at speeds greater than 45 mph. when we initally q
My jeep grand cherokee had the brakes & rotors changed at 22,000 miles through a recall. now, at 55,000 miles they both need to be done again. this does not seem like typical wear and tear as i have never had to replace brakes and rotors after such a short distance. dealership blames it on driving techniques, but like i said, i have never had to do this with any other vehicles i have owned.*ak
Rotors warped w/in 20000 miles. replaced rotors at 36000 miles, rotors warped again at 40000. advised by chrysler and dealer that calipers are defective not rotors but no recall has been issued.*ak
While driving, could step on the brake pedal and feel the brakes pulsating. also, had noticed rotors overheating and got out of round. after every eight thousand miles, rotors had to be replaced. *ak consumer feels the brakes are underdesigned and needs to utilize a splash shield to aid in the cooling of the brakes. *jg
Brake light is always on. when applying brakes rear wheel shakes and vibrates. dealership is aware of problem. *ak
When brakes are applied while driving 55mph or more vehicle vibrates severely. dealer has been notified. feel free to provide any further information on this matter.*ak
I have repeatedly replaced the rotors on my jeep grand cherokee. at highway speeds the braking is uneven and pulsates jerking the steering wheel. chrysler has replaced the rotors every 6000 miles on my vehicle but has not been able to solve the problem. when the dealer is questioned about the problem they say that it continues with the 2000 and 2001 models. obviously chrysler is not addressing the problem. if i do not replace the brakes the problem gets worse. this is a dangerous situation and chrysler ignores nlm
Vehicle continues to pull right after 2 alignments. random, loud mechanical clunk coming from right underside when going over small bumps or drop-offs. brake pedal shudders again after having rotors replaced first, then more recently lapped via on-vehicle lathe. steering ticks / clunks at random. moan from under hood when turning at slow speeds. acrid white smoke from under left hood getting into passenger compartment when spinning 4-wheels in snow.*ak
When applying brakes upper front of vehicle will start to vibrate. this problem will happen at any speed. contacted dealer.*ak
The front brake rotors on this vehicle have warped four times. the first occurred july 1999 at 6125 miles, the rotors were turned on the vehicle at this time. the second instance occurred october 2000. the front rotors and pads were replaced at this time. the third occurence came at 32,460 miles in august 2001. the front rotors were turned at this time. the brakes began to chatter again at around 38,000 miles and are getting progressivly worse. there has to be something wrong with either the design of this braking system, or the material used in the manufacture of the brake rotors. four times in 39,000 miles seems to be a high incidence for a vehicle used only for commuting. the dealer was very good about taking care of the first three incidences under warranty. i doubt if this will continue now that the warranty has run out, and the extended warranty does not cover brakes.*ak
When applying brakes at any speed vehicle sputters and jumps right and left as the disk on either side grabs and releases enabling vehicle to turn in close circles or make tight turns. *ak *tt
At highway speeds, front end of vehicle will shake when trying to apply brakes. upon contacting dealer, dealer noted that rotors needed to be replaced.*ak *yh
I have a 99 jeep grand cherokee. i currently have 34,000 miles on the car and have taken the car to dealer 3 times for excessive vibration when i use the brakes. i was told the rotors had to be turned when i brought it in the first time (19,000 miles). i just brought the car back in today for the same problem and was told by the dealer that chrysler came out with a service bulletin on the rotors, but would have to be replaced at my expense. this is bs. i'm a mechanic in the air force and this is a big time safety issue. if left uncorrected this may eventually cause break failure. ts
Both front brake rotors have been replaced 3 times. the rear rotors have been been replaced 2 times. the front rotors are being replaced every 8,000 miles on the average. this is a serious flaw in brake rotors. chrysler needs to redesign the rotors with slots and/or a different material.*ak
Steering wheel vibrates when applying brakes at 35-40 mph and higher.*ak
Since buying this vehicle in 1999, i have had to replace the rotors or have them turned at least 2-3 times per year. i have talked to many people about this problem. i have even talked to jeep technicians. everyone tells me that jeep had a bad batch of metal in 1999. if this is true, why do they not recall all 1999 jeeps? i know that it takes a certain amount of complaints or accidents before something is done. for now i quess that i can only hope for the nhtsa to get the ball rolling. it would be much appreciated by all 1999 jeep grand cherokee owners.*ak
No summary listed for above vehicle. *ak
I am going to have to take my jeep in to the dealer for the fifth time for warped rotors! rotors have warped every 6 months or around 6ooo miles causing severe vibration of the steering wheel and loss of control. nothing dealer has tried is working(resurfacing and rotor replacement). please get jeep to recall and fix problem, otherwise my vehicle is in the shop every six months. something needs to be done just from looking at the sheer volume of similar complaints. this problem is a hazard when steering shakes so violently it is hard to control. grand cherokee owners are pleading for help!*ak
Rotors keep warping every 6000 to 1000 miles. daimler chrysler will no longer repair/replace the rotors. this is a safety issue. the steering wheel vibrates wildly and you have to hold on and i'm sure it is not braking properly due to the warpage. they continually get worse until you cannot drive the jgc until they are replaced. there was an earlier recall on these and daimlerchrysler has not fixed the problem. they should be made responsible for the rotors until they coorect the problem. the recall should continue on every jgc until they fix the problem. they should not be allowed to push the replacement cost of replacing the rotors off onto the consumer.they should not be allowed to put these vehicles on the road until this is fixed or they are made fully responsible for the replacement.*ak
Severe shimmy when applying brakes at speeds > 8 mph. dealer replaced rotors 1/11/01 @ 15k miles - i paid for rotors, dealer paid labor. service manager told me today that 30% of jeep customers worldwide have this problem; 50% of owners in midwest. told me that since i have already paid once, jeep will pay full cost this time. also indicated that since it was not "safety related" (i.e. the car still stops) no recall has ever been issued.*ak
Rotors warp every 8000 to 9000 miles. this causes severe shake in steering wheel at all speeds but is very bad if you have to break at higher highway speeds. feels like vehicle is going to go out of control. have had rotors replaced or turned 4 times. no solution has worked to-date.*ak
Purchased used 12/01 pulsating while braking returned to dealer a number of times was told i was not braking properly on hills. replaced bakes, rotors and calipers problem has reoccured recently. dealer says to contact jeep, i did they say, no recall no relief.
While driving 55 mph applied brakes and they did not function, resulting in a minor collision.*ak consumer stated that brake disc pad failed, dealer replaced pads, resurfaced all rotors and replaced a faulty master cylinder which caused brake pedal to go to the floor.*yd
The vehicle violently shimmied when braking. the dealer has been contacted. *ak scc
Front rotors have been replaced 3 times. rear rotors once due to vibration and shaking of vehicle when applying brakes. *ak
