Front brake rotors warped at 11,000 26,000 33,000 and 42,000. each of the first three times the rotors were replaced only to fail again.the last time the rotors were cut and i have less than 1,000 on the cut rotors thus far.each time the dealer and mfg. rep blame it on driving habits. in discussing with other jeep owners this seems to be a common problem and also sveral service stations in the area are seeing this problem in many jeeps.4 rotor failures in 40,000 is rediculous and an explanation such as driving habits is an insult to ones intelegence...this may be a huge problem with jeep owners since jeep has put out two tech service bullitens on dealing with the problem. *ak

When braking there is vibration and pulsation, front rotors have been replaced 4 times due to warping.*ak

On three occasions, i have had very noticable vibration of the steering wheel, when braking at highway speeds(50-60mph). the 1st time was 30aug2000. the correction made was to cut the front brake rotors. the 2nd time was 12dec2000, at 36,242mi. the correction made was to resurface the front brake rotors. the 3rd time i had to have service was 16mar2001 at 41,560mi. the correction made was to have the front brake rotors resurfaced. the service reps. have told me, several times, that this is a common occurance. the cause, as best i can remember, is the size of the brake rotors versus (i believe) the brake shoes. i have talked to one other person, who stated stated his wife grand cherokee, has the same problem. so far there has been no recall, on this problem. so far, other than the steering wheel vibrating(at high speeds) when braking, i have not had it cause further problems. i hope that it does not, but wanted to contact your agency, to see what, if anything can be done, to remedy the problem. thankyou for your assistance.

When applying brakes vehicle shakes so badly that it causes steering wheel to vibrate. front in vibration. consumer has taken it to a dealer twice, and was told all it needed was an adjustment. but, within 2 weeks it was shaking again. *ak

At approximately 10,000 miles both front brake rotors became warped/distorted. warping was due to materials used in manufacturing of rotors. brake rotor warping occurred again at approximately 16,000 miles. vehicle currently has 24,500 miles on it, and defect has occurred again. dealership was attempting to repair defect. however, manufacturer was not supporting dealership efforts in correcting this defect. please provide any additional information/attachments.*ak

Rear brake pads and rotors replaced due to pulsating brakes, 6000 miles later, brakes were replaced again because of pulsation, now at 35000 miles the brakes are pulsating again. *slc

When braking steering wheel shakes, and wheel pulls to the drivers side, also consumer hears a squealing noise. *ak

Excessive shimmy when applying brakes at 45+ mph; dealer cut rotors; also excessive brake dust deposits. *ak

At 10,000 miles front brake rotors were turned because of brake pulsation. by 18,000 miles, brakes begain pulsating again. i requested new rotors the first time. and the dealership now will not replace them. *ak

On my new 1999 jeep grand cherokee, the brake rotors have repeatedly warped, causing severe shaking of the steering wheel and car when the brakes are applied, which greatly decreases the safety and effectiveness of the car's braking. in the 14 months and 14,398 miles since i bought the car new, the defective brake rotors have been in for repair/service four times so far. the dealer informs me that the manufacturer (daimler-chrysler) states that the problem is widespread, that the problem is caused by heat build-up that is caused by the use of new sintered metal (non-asbestos) brake pads that (the dealer says) are now federally mandated on all new cars. furthermore, the manufacturer's position is that they will repair or replace the defective brakes for a short period of time on a new car, but after that (even while the car is under warranty) they will consider further repairs to be "not the manufacturers' responsibility". this is outrageous. is it true that the problem of brake rotor warpage is now widespread among new cars which are mandated to use sintered-metal brake pads? i've learned via the internet that many, many owners of new jeep grand cherokees are experiencing the same brake defect problelm that my vehicle has. shouldn't your government agency order a recall of these defective brakes? *ak

First, brake related problems: mileage 2341 complaint pulsatting when stopping 20-55 mph , front brake rotors were resurfaced , complaint 2 mileage 16040 brakes pulsatting when stopping also shimmy in steering 45-55 mph, front brake rotors were replaced reason warpage due to overheating design flaw? / complaint 3 mileage 17000, brakes pulsatting , vibaration in vehicle and steering wheel shimmy when brake are applied. have not rportedto dealer at this time will schedule for week of 07/16/01. secondly, transmission shift problems: started when vehicle was brand new when stopping it felt like someone was hitting you in the rear end. first repair ,mileage 4428 consisted of tsb0300799 and replacement of rear driveshaft, also rear axle carrier and pinion bearings were replaced.second transmission repair mileage 10453 due to harsh shiffting @ 20 mph and again when stopping it felt like someone ran into the rear of the vehicle, this time the transmission yoke was replaced and another transmission update per tsb21-09-00,also during this service the front driveshaft was replaced due to a howling noise which started around 55-60 mph, complaint three mileage 10818 vehicle still has whining noise coming from drive train. in addittion, transmission problems continue with harsh shifting at times at 20 mph and 50-55mph,these shift points worsen as other problems were being corrected, dealer claims that thhis is adaptive memory and their nothing that will be done to correct it. according to casey jeep service manager daimlerchrysler does not see this as a problem only an issue. fourth complaint mileage 16040 transmission continues to shift hard at times @ 20 mph and 50-55 mph. at this time dealer show no concern in correcting this problem . in summary, brake and drive train problems with this vehicle starting at 2341 miles, and they continue be on-going. i now question the safety of this vehicle.

Brakes have reacurring warped rotors - on 4th set of front rotors. brakes produce severe shimmy when braking at freeway speeds side to side motion of steering wheel at all speeds. *ak

For 7 to 10 miles when applying brakes there is jerking and pulsation, dealer stated that front brake rotors were warped.*ak consumer states keyless remote works intermittently. the battery failed, the head lights come on by themselves when it was in auto setting and the parking lights also come on at times due to multifunction switch failure. *yh

Severe vibration of steering when brakes are applied at speeds in excess of 45 mph. problem first manifest itself at around 9,000 miles. dealer turned the rotors. problem reappears at 16,000 miles. dealer says rotors again need to be turned. will not acknowledge that the rotors and/or braking system is defective. *ak

Brakes vibrating and pulsating with a slight pull to side. *la

Took delivery new 3/11/1999. on 2/10/200, @ 5400 miles, dealer performed sb 05-002-99, which i think was turning the front rotors. on 9/30/2000, @10,382 miles, dealer performed sb 05-01-00, front rotor and pad replacement. on 7/2/2001, @ 14,768 miles, dealer turned front rotors. on 2/7/2002, @ 20,804 miles, dealer replaced front rotors. every 5000 miles, the front rotors have developed unacceptable lateral runout. this vehicle is still on its original tires (and they look pretty good), but its third set of front brake rotors. dealer reports chrysler rep says this is the last "good will" brake repair on my vehicle. this is a design problem. it is a safety issue.*ak

I've had the rotors fail (warped) 6 times in 29,000 miles. *ak

Front brake rotors replaced 2 times and now in need of replacement again as steering wheel and front end vibrate with braking at speeds in excess of 45 mph. called chrysler customer service and spoke to representative ( michael farrow) on 09/13/2000 about problem after second failure. he stated " i do not have anything in front of me to indicate a problem with the brake system on that vehicle". there have been several technical service bulletins for the brakes and i suspect at least one of these had been issued when he made that comment. he stated that it might be related to my driving habits and was not a defect with the automobile. the service manager at the dealership told me after fixing the problem the first time at 5311 miles that he hoped i wouldn't be back for this same problem but he knew i would since they have had many problems with the front brake rotors on the 1999 jeeps.*ak
