Problems with 2013 Honda Accord STEERING

On average, the 2013 Honda Accord starts to “feel” problems with the STEERING and its various aspects after 45 835 miles.

Recently reported STEERING problems on 2013 Honda Accord

My son was practicing parallel parking. and car's steering wheel became stiff and hard to turn. i was able to make wheel straight and drove around slowly, mostly straight line, and steering wheel became normal, able to tune it without forcing it hard. it was scary.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 honda accord. the contact stated that while driving, the steering wheel ceased with the power steering warning light illuminated. the steering wheel became difficult to turn. the contact called route 22 honda dealer, (1480 n broad st, hillside, nj 07205, (866) 209-8982) and was informed to schedule an appointment. the vehicle was not taken to a dealer or an independent mechanic for a diagnostic testing. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 136,075.

My power steering went out. can't steer the car. it a fine yesterday. steering wheel warning light is on. i was parked luckily when this happened. i can't use my car now.

I was getting off the highway and was driving home along the service road when i noticed the steering wheel automatically turned on its own, causing me to almost crash into parked cars. no lights appeared on my dash and it was out of the ordinary. luckily i was off the highway driving at low speeds, otherwise i would have injured multiple people. the steering wheel became so hard to control requiring you to grip the steering wheel to turn it. once you let go of the steering wheel, it would turn really fast on its own to the right. i tried turning on and off the car, unplugging the battery, but the issue was still there. i took it to the honda dealer and also contacted corporate in which i was told that the rack and pinion is bad, and if the car doesn't show a code, they won't cover it. my car only has 46k miles, and a big safety issue like this should have been covered or partially covered. instead, i was told it was going to be over $3k for install and parts, which is ridiculous.

I was driving on busy 4 lane road and was turning to the left to get in the turn lane when the steering wheel became very hard to move. i was able while struggling to make the turn. it was lucky as there was no oncoming traffic. i had the car immediately towed to the dealer and now have a $3,000 repair bill to fix the power steering. i have noticed all the complaints going back to the original year the vehicle was built and cannot believe that this problem has not caused a recall.

We bought the honda accord from the dealership brand new and took delivery 11/4/2013. on saturday 11/16/2019, with just over 40,000 miles on the car we noticed that the power steering was not functioning. it was not only hard to steer but also would continue progressing in the direction turning. we took the car back to the dealership on monday 11/18/2019 where they stated that the rack, power steering needed replace for a total cost of $2,797.49. contacted honda customer service and they refused to help. contacted the extended warranty company since the extended warranty expired 12 days earlier. they wouldn't help. this was a very dangerous failure on a vehicle that was well taken care of and has very low millage. did some research and found and article in edmunds "feds probe 2013 honda accord for power steering failure", estimate 374,000 complains about the 2013 honda accords. isn't that enough to force honda to do a recall?

I was driving on the highway with my wife, mother in-law and my two years daughter and all of a sudden the steering wheel became very hard and steering light came on. i was very concerned about my family and myself because we were on the highway! i took the nearest exit it was very dificult to control the car. i stopped the to check my phone on what could be the cause? this seems to be a serious problem that happened to many people before and had reported it to the nhtsa. but nothing was done! i care for my family' safety and i will hold the nhtsa responsible if anything happens to me or my family due to this issue.this is a serious problem and needs to be addressed by honda.

The car looses its steering control. when stationary (and driving), if i take my hands off the steering, it automatically steers all the way to the left. it sometimes resets the problem when the car is restarted or when it is turned all the way to the right, the problem occurs again shortly. i took it to the dealership but like others, i only got a big bill of $2800.

I am the original owner of a 2013 honda accord. i travel about 30k a year. i have been extremely meticulous with the exterior and maintenance of the vehicle. during the course of my travels, i have on at least 4-5 occasions had difficulty changing lanes. more specific, while trying to make a lane change at low speed (5-35 mph) i was unable to turn the wheel to make a lane change. the ability to steer came back quickly, but for a second or two, a turn was not possible. this past week, on 10/30/2019, a similar scenario transpired. i was stopped at a "stop" sign and needed cross an intersection and make a left turn. just when it was time to turn, the steering wheel locked, not allowing me to turn left. as there was an oncoming vehicle, i was able slow down but struck a curb with my right front tire. the impact beat up the rim pretty bad and deflated the tire. i replaced the tire with the spare and headed to a near mechanic, about 1 mile away. the mechanic advised me not drive the vehicle. the damage included cracked rim, power steering rack and electronic steering box to name a few. in researching parts, i came across many incidents in which a 2013 honda accord has had failed steering capability. i contacted honda (case #10012315), they did not acknowledge a problem now, nor in the past and could not comment on problems that other people have had. i was told that the vehicle was old and had a lot of miles. they told me "you had an accident, why are you calling honda, you should be calling an insurance company". honda would not do anything. i expressed my regret in not purchasing a future honda vehicle... shame on honda.

When turning my steering wheel while driving my engine shuts down and restarts. when this happens my steering wheel locks up

My 16 year old son was driving my 2013 honda accord when the power steering failed. he was in motion on a county highway, traveling approximately 45 mph. he just came off an access road and had veered to the right to merge into on-coming traffic. the vehicle has less than 38k miles. the wheel jerked to the right and took great effort to center the vehicle and continue to a stop. he turned off the car and called me. stated it was still driveable and drove home, but continued to have to accommodate for steering wheel jerking to the right and circulating out of control when let go. i drove the car upon his return and experienced same issue. taking vehicle to honda dealership for diagnostic check.

Vehicle became extremely difficult and almost impossible to steer for no reason. took it to the honda dealership where i purchased it and was told there is no safety recall. there are almost 400,000 complaints i've noticed and i'm wondering why there hasn't been a recall. i had 3 of my children with me at the time and i feel extremely fortunate that our vehicle did not crash and there were no injuries. does someone need to die before this is considered serious enough for a recall?

Takata recall my complaint is about abs pump anti-lock brake part modulator assembly sedan cvt fits 13 accord 503036 the lights are on in the dashboard and in the dealer told me to replace that part.

We are a collision repair facility in oregon scotties autobody this vehicle has a broken steering shaft in the column that appears to be defective metal . i dont know if this is a random problem but i believe it should be inspected . this broken shaft causes 100% loss of steering

The vehicle was parked and stationary, once it was turned on the (eps) electrical power system light was displayed on the dash. steering wheel was then difficult to move or turn. the indicator was constant from that point.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 honda accord. after starting the vehicle, the traction control and power steering indicators illuminated. the vehicle was taken to wetzel honda (3505 chester blvd, richmond, in) where a steering service update was performed per an extended warranty program. after retrieving the vehicle from the dealer, the power steering immediately malfunctioned and the steering wheel became difficult to turn. the cause of the failure was not determined. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 99,000.

In august of 2018 i brought my vehicle into balise honda in west springfield, massachusetts with a loss of power steering during operation on a highway. they worked on the vehicle and reported no recalls for loss of power steering. when i picked up the vehicle, i regained power steering. on june 5, 2019, i lost the power steering again during operation of the motor vehicle on a city street. i successfully drove the vehicle home without power steering and it continued into june 6, 2019. please help me understand why accidents have occurred due to the loss of power steering in the 2013 honda accord and no recalls have been issued? this safety issue cannot continue...

2013 honda accord. consumer writes in regard to power steering failure while driving. *as the consumer stated the dealer found the steering gear box to be the cause of the failure and needed to be replaced. the consumer was also concerned about the warranty for the steering assembly. *js

When driving the car it would turn easy to the right but turn hard to the left. we took it in to a dealership and they reprogrammed the neutral sensor because it lost its programming they say. the car drove good for a couple of days, but it started doing the same thing as before, but on the opposite side and started jerking to the left and over steering with out warning. we took it back to the same dealership and they now said it needed the whole steering rack replaced for $2300. however, there is an extended warranty on this problem that states this problem is covered and honda is supposed to pay for all cost associated with this problem. as stated above the problem got worse after it came back from the dealership.the service bulletin # is 15-056 which is the eps torque sensor which they said needed to be reprogrammed, which made the steering good only for a couple of days. with that said i am not sure how the eps torque sensor is not a defect covered under the extended warranty? the honda dealership as well as honda incorp. claims this problem is not related to the torque sensor. the dealership and honda says the power steering gear box assembly needs to be replaced. the extended warranty bulleting says the power steering gear box assembly needs to be replaced and that honda is to pay for it.

While backing out of a residential driveway onto a busy neighborhood street, the steering wheel locked up and the steering malfunction warning light came on. i attempted to steer the vehicle but the electronic power steering(eps) was countering the steering effort. i tried multiple times to restart the vehicle in hopes to regain steering control, but the vehicle would not operate properly. the only way i was able to regain steering control was with the car off and in neutral, meaning i had no ability to accelerate to maneuver the vehicle from oncoming traffic, relying only on the momentum of the sloped road to help guide the vehicle safely away from traffic lanes. i had the vehicle towed the the dealer the next morning. service adviser looked up vehicle history and the recall for eps controller software had already been performed 2 years prior. honda had extended the warranty on the rack and pinion system due to known torque sensor failure issues. adviser said if, obd scan shows fault code relating to torque sensor failure, honda would cover complete cost to replace entire rack and pinion system. hours later, adviser contacts me and says the scan shows that it was not the the torque sensor that failed, but the electronic power steering computer failed and needed to be replaced at my cost. i argued that there was no possible way for the consumer to prevent such an issue from occurring, and the fact that a computer system controlling the steering failed while i was operating the vehicle is an alarming safety issue that american honda should look into and i should not have to bear the burden of paying for such a repair. vehicle has 83,100 miles, original owner and all scheduled maintenance performed at same dealer. never had prior steering issues and was never advised of any potential issues. honda sympathetically only agreed to cover half the repair cost.

On 4/12/2019, i was driving home from work at around 24:00 (midnight) on freeway 22 westbound near the block that i suddenly realized i lost control of my steering wheel while i was traveling at 70mph plus. the steering wheel icon light up on my dashboard. this happened so fast at a curve area of the freeway, i turned on my emergency light and slowed the car down by hitting the break. there were around 4 cars to my right when this happened. fortunately, i was able to safely reach the exit lane to the right due to the curvature of the freeway turning left by going straight. as i slowed down the car on the exit lane, i yanked the steering wheel very hard to the left then right to maneuver the car to stay in the lane. after i exited the freeway on haster street, i yanked the steering wheel very hard to the right to make the turn and found a small street then come to a stop. at this time, the steering wheel icon still illuminated on my dashboard. i turned of the car after put it to park then turned it back on and the icon disappeared. i got control of steering wheel back. i proceeded to garden grove street heading west toward my home. at the first red light on garden grove, i stopped and did not steer the wheel. again, the steering wheel locked on me again. the icon appeared again on my dashboard. i again turned off and on the car and the icon disappeared and i had my control back. from there, i drove slowly in the right lane to my home. this time, there was no problem. on 4/13/2019, which is today, i dropped off my car at honda world dealer on 13600 beach blvd, westminster, ca 92683 and told one of the reps about the problem. he did the inquiry on my car and system showed there was a recall of eps gearbox replacement at this dealership. i hope nhtsa will take this serious and help people like me. it's extremely dangerous to drive with no control of the steering wheel.

On wednesday, april 3, 2019 we made a 600 mile trip from cookeville, tn to shelby township, mi with no problems noted. the next morning, backing out of the driveway i noticed the steering was normal at one point, i rotated the wheel to the right and the wheel continued turning by itself while the car was not even in motion. i rotated the wheel to the left and met with resistance. i rotated the wheel to the right and the wheel started turning by itself. i then noticed the eps light was on. i continued to rotate the wheel back and forth. i got to the center positioned and the wheel then turned rapidly to the right by itself . i immediately decided to take the car to the nearest honda dealer. on the way there the wheel violently turned to the right and nearly caused me to run into the curb at 35 mph.i then arrived at jim riehl honda in sterling heights , michigan. they diagnosed the problem as a "position sensor". they related to me that they had downloaded the software and this seemed to have cleared the problem. while driving back to my next destination (10 miles) the original problem resurfaced. i called the dealership service department, which was closed. i left a message that i was bringing the car in monday morning, april 8, 2019.

While cornering, the vehicle suddenly became very difficult to steer and did not right itself coming out of the corner. over the next several days, the steering occasionally failed. no warning lights came on and when honda tested the car, no torque sensor failures were noted. on that basis, honda declined to apply their extended warranty covering the failed steering. honda was not interested in pursuing the failure to see if it might improve their knowledge of a known problem with this model's steering. honda claimed that the failure was rare and that there was no information out there to determine whether the vehicle would be safely drivable without repair. they could not assure me that the failure was just a loss of power steering, of something more dangerous. it wasn't until after i paid for the repair, that i found numerous similar complaints online.

My 2013 accords steering just stopped working when i was driving the car on 1/12/19, i am lucky that i wasn't going very fast, i was driving on a city street. also glad that i was able to get it to the side of the road, to get it out of the way. how can this not be a recall??

The honda accord power steering completely shut off on me while driving on the highway. i experienced this very frightening situation yesterday with my 2013 honda accord v6 while driving about 40mph in a straight line i suddenly lost power with no apparent reason. i had the eps light show on my dash. i pulled over and restarted the car but with no success the power steering wouldn't turn on it was completely dead. i did not see no fluid leaks under the car and the power steering pump has plenty of fluid.

I was driving down hill on a slightly inclined city street when the car suddenly veered to the left. i was unable to control the steering and in panic was unable to stop the car before crossing several lanes and hitting a building. there were injuries to myself and my passenger. the car was a total loss and the building sustained structural damage. While driving at about 40 miles per hour the power steering stopped working. in october 2016 i had the same problem and the repair was done as per warranty extention 15-056. the car had 51693 miles. i now have 75000 mile on the vehicle and the the same problem occurred 2 times within about 20 minutes. i read a report that the nhtsa determined that the problem was decreasing in frequency and that the problem was with early equipment that had been repaired. obviously this is not the case.

Multiple times, while driving, my power steering will go out and it becomes very difficult for me to turn the wheel. i had to pull over while on the highway and restart my 2013 honda accord to temporarily fix the issue. this only happens while i am driving.

Power steering failed while driving 65 mph on highway, luckily one exit from a dealer. eps warning light came on. took car to dealer and fixed it for 2900.00. warranty has since been extended from 5 to 13 years for this issue on my specific vehicle.

I own a 2013 honda accord. the power steering (eps) will go off randomly. in the past week it went off about 6 or 7 times per day. it will shut off even on the highway which makes it very dangerous to get control of the car. this happens daily.

2013 honda accord. consumer writes in regards to recall for placement of electric power steering rack. *as *tr the consumer requested to be reimbursed for a steering failure that was once included in an extended warranty program. the consume was not informed of the extended warranty. *js *js

While driving, the power steering light illuminated and i lost power steering. luckily i was driving locally so gain control of vehicle quickly.

Eps light came on. was very difficult to steer. first time happened 09/05/2018, second time- 09/06/2018. just had a recall work done re: battery on 08/30/2018. could it be related? i see many other complaints regarding the same issue. shouldn't there be a recall? looks like there were accidents caused by this problem. i took the car to the shop yesterday, paid $160- nothing was found wrong. i feel unsafe driving like this. please respond. https://www.aboutlawsuits.com/honda-accord-power-steering-problems-nhtsa-73811/

While driving, the power steering fails and becomes difficult to steer. the power steering warning light illuminates when this occurs. this condition has occurred at least 10 separate times in the last month and once was on the freeway traveling at 75 mph and another while traveling at 50 mph, both of which caused me to nearly lose control as i was changing lanes. all other instances occurred while making slow speed turns. shutting off the vehicle and restarting usually reset the system but last friday the steering failed again and has not been able to reset, going on 5 days now. this issue is dangerous and has been diagnosed at the local honda dealer as a faulty power steering rack unit. i have researched this concern and have found several other vehicles have exhibited the same problem.

Vehicle was parked on gravel parking area. when vehicle was started the eps warning light came on. the steering wheel acted frozen and was not able to be turn left or right even with significate force and attempted movement forward or in reverse. stop vehicle and followed instructions in vehicle manual. when restarting vehicle warning light did not display and steering was normal. vehicle was taken in for diagnostics and eps unit was replaced. vehicle has 70,533.

The steering wheels automatically become stiffer and hard to turn right or left while driving.it takes a lot of muscling to keep it under control before an accident occurs. this is the second time this incident occurred.my car has got 84000 miles on it and regularly serviced and maintained. the next day it happened it became normal as usual with no repairs. i understood later that there is no power steering fluid and this function is electrically controlled! from online, google search indicated several of the honda customers owning the same car model ear has experienced the same problems with the steering wheel. this situation is very dangerous especially in highway exits and entrances where car drives in over 50-60 miles.it can create life threatening accidents if not corrected. dealers could not diagnose the problem and do not have the capability to fix it and might cost a future. i would like honda to recall this car and fix it immediately before another emergency situation, accident or threts to safety and life.

While driving, without any warning, the power steering cuts out. after shutting the car down it the steering works. i was on a highway & had close call accidents trying to pull over. it has now happened 4 times in 5 days. the vehicle has under 50,000 miles

Electric power steering malfunction light came on could barely turn the wheel, the first time it happened was running about 40 mph and again it happened was running at 50 mph and going into a curve and the third time my speed was 55 mph all three times this has happened i was on a highway. the first time i had just got off the interstate. if you are where you can pull off the road and turn the vehicle off and start it again the steering is fine. seems this should be a recall as researching on the internet i'm not the only one with this issue. places i need to go is usually on the interstate and running 60 to 70 mph is scary not know when this may happen again. i did see on the internet where 2 accidents has occurred from this issue and thank goodness there were no injuries. i have called honda headquarters and they act like they don't know what i am talking about and had a record that i had called in regarding this issue. so does it take someone being seriously injured or killed before this is looked at. i was told to replace the electric power steering gear. i asked about the software upgrade that i had read about and also regarding hoses that were getting hot causing this. all the dealerships know is it will cost more than $2000 for a new steering gear. this shouldn't happen in the first place. i know parts go bad and if this is an issue with other vehicles maybe due to this being dangerous driving auto makers may go back to steering fluid and do away with electric power steering. please check on a recall issue. this has happened 3 times 08/10/2018 and twice on 08/12/2018. i am at the point i am afraid to drive the car no matter the speed and especially on certain roads. thank you

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 honda accord. while the contact's spouse was driving 40 mph, the power steering failed and the power steering warning indicator illuminated. the dealer was not contacted. the failure was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 98,000.

Loss of steering around a turn. near crash.

I was driving my 2013 honda accord in a school zone and attempted to turn left, but the steering wheel was very difficult to turn. i needed to use a lot of force in order to turn the steering wheel to the left. i pulled over and stopped the car. when stopped, i still couldn't turn the wheel to the left, but it could be spun to the right continuously like it wasn't connected to anything. i called my honda dealership and was told to bring it in. they are replacing the steering gear box but it will cost me about $3,000. i consider myself lucky in that i was in a school zone and driving slowly, and not on the highway. otherwise, i would have lost control of my car while going at a higher speed.

The electric power steering eps warning light , coupled with steering wheel stiff resistance, occurred during several random events over the last four days - once the first day 30 mph on rural road, twice the second at 50 and 30 mph on highway then rural road, four times yesterday within those speeds on city streets, then twice while driving to the dealership this morning at 60 mph on interstate highway. shutting off the engine, then restarting, only temporarily cleared the issue. i was fortunately driving during the events, and not allowing my wife or daughter to even consider handling. tight turns were not possible - period. the dealership, upon completing diagnostics today, determined the steering box/rack and pinion were the source of failure. with <59,000 miles, spotless record of maintenance at this original dealer, and never abused, this type of either mechanical or electrical failure is unacceptable, as well a danger to the public. i reviewed 158 comments/cases on car complaint websites, specific to honda accord 2013 models with similar eps/steering box issues. driving at any speed, where a passenger is presented a non-responsive steering event, would not be accepted by honda management, nor any of their employees. statistically, this appears a design flaw is the apparent issue, and replacement-in-kind in my logic doesn't resolve the issue, especially at my expense. in my area of expertise in crude refining, any failure is unacceptable in a mechanically sound piece of well-maintained equipment. if a steerable piece of equipment lost power in our facility, company resources and focused teams, safety audits, and possibly osha oversight would ensue. i'll be contacting honda with the news that i cannot further support their products designed with eps. *tr

While driving the car on a busy street, all of a sudden the steering wheel became extremely hard to turn either left or right. stopped the car carefully and turned of the engine. after a while, turned the engine back on and the steering was fine. call the dealer today about the problem and going to the dealership thursday july 05, 2018

Three malfunction indicators have come on in car and will not go off. those indicators are tpms tire pressure light, vsa vehicle stability assits and eps electronic power steering. this only began after i had my brakes in rear of car done and car was actually stationary when these lights came on. the lights will stay on when vehicle is in motion with really no change in driving. i have googled the issue and found that many honda owners are having the same issue.

We turned right out of a parking lot onto a busy city street and got down to the light. as we turned the steering wheel to the right and before pushing the accelerator the steering wheel became extremely hard to turn. it was extremely hard to turn the steering wheel left or right. it was very hard to control the steering wheel at this point as we are trying to find another parking lot to turn into so we could try and figure out what was going on. we looked around the car to make sure nothing visible was wrong and didnt see anything so we turned the engine off and sat there for a bit and then turned the engine back on. once we turned the engine back on the steering was fine. we decided to look online and see if anyone else had experienced these problem and seen many have. if we turn the steering wheel right or left while at a complete stop the steering wheel becomes hard to turn but if you turn the engine off then back on it works again. i'm hoping the manufacturer can recall the problem and fix it beings there are many complaints of this particular problem.

Straight city street at 50mph. not, repeat not turning. car suddenly veered to right. took a lot of force to keep it going straight. when stopped at side of road steering wheel cocked right about 45 degrees. not just loss of power steering. this was loss of vehicle control. car suddenly and actively veered hard right. no warning lights on dash noticed. after restart drove to dealer without problems. did it again with mechanic driving. his eyes got very big. reluctantly drove back to dealer. repair is replace steering assembly, $2,900. car had 36,000 miles on it at time of failure.

My daughter and i purchased a 2013 honda accord at tameron honda, daphne, al on february 16, 2018. we drove it for about two weeks and then the power steering started getting hard to steer. so we followed the owners manual by letting the car's eps to cool down. we then were able to drive it for awhile, then on march 22, 2018 my daughter was driving and the power steering eps warning light came on and the steering was very hard making it almost impossible to drive safely. i call the tamron service department and was told the would fix it but i would have to pay for it.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 honda accord. while driving, the power steering failed. the vehicle was pulled over to the side of the road and restarted. afterwards, the vehicle operated normally, but failed again later that day. the dealer (roush honda, 100 w schrock rd, westerville, oh 43081) was contacted, but the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 22,826.

My 2013 honda accord touring model electric power steering failed. the car only has 49,000 miles. the dealer states it is no longer a extended warranty issue and will not cover issue. the problem was noticed while driving the vehicle and then taken to the dealer for evaluation. the problem is loss of power steering and/or a sudden increase in steering effort and dealer identified that the electric power steering box needs replacement for a total of $2100.00. for a "new" car this is ridiculous and should be honda's fix not the costumer.

Sudden loss of power steering and power steering warning light appeared while vehicle was in motion on city street. continued to drive vehicle and power steering returned after 20 to 30 minutes. indicator light shut off 30 to 40 minutes after power steering returned.
