We have classified the 519 complaints from 2009 Chevrolet Malibu about STEERING into the following categories.
My vehicle is having exact symptoms as other vehicles in the same year range with the exact engine size and power train. i have a 4 - cyl eco tec engine and i have found that gm recalled lots of units for this exact problem yet mine is not in the database. my electroinc steering shuts on and off all winter!
My vehicle has lost steering after starting several times over the last week. my info screen displays an esc and power steering message and my steering wheel is locked in place. once the car is shut off and restarted the messages go away and steering is back to normal. i have found a recall related to this on certain vehicles of my year/make/model and also many forums of people having the same issues. however, when searching by vin it says my vehicle has 0 recalls. i have also noticed when my vehicle is stopped, or in park my steering wheel will shake for a moment and then stop.
The electric power steering suddenly stopped working, and i was in danger of crashing the vehicle. the chevy dealership says its a problem with the steering column torque sensor, and that gm had a million car recall on this issue. however, they stated this safety concern had an expiration date and for my vehicle, it expired may 2019. it appears to be having exactly the same symptoms, with the same dangerous consequences, as those recalled vehicles, and yet gm will not take responsibility for this safety matter. this condition occurred intermittently, and then all of the time. it occurs when in reverse, and forward gears, when turning and when traveling straight. it occurs at all speeds. again, the gm mechanics state the problem is the steering column torque sensor.
I was driving and the power steering light came on and steering got real hard to turn and now i have no steering power to drive and i'm scared to drive and also my car be in reverse and it went forward
My electric power steering just went out while driving and my anti lock break lights came on, after researching this is a common issue in 09's in very dangerous, there were recalls on this but my vin number is saying my car is not included, i find that hard to believe.
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 chevrolet malibu. the contact stated that while driving approximately 45 mph, an audible sound emitted from the steering wheel and the steering wheel ceased. the power steering assist warning light illuminated. the dealer was not called. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was approximately 200,000. the vin was not provided.
Driving and the power steering light came on and the steering wheel just got real hard to steer and believe if ideas turning i might have went up on the curb or ran into someone i hope they wait to someone die before they recall this problem
The steering started jerking, about a week later i had no power steering. service esc is on the dash along with the traction control light.
When driving my vehical all of a sudden the lower stearing went out and all these warning lights come on. it's super hard to steer i have 3 kids that ride in this car everyday and it's very dangerous. also my headlight drivers side has gone out 4 times in the past 6 months and its very expensive to fix!
My dash lights up power steering service esc andy power steering goes completely out of my car driving down the road. i have children and it's really hard to even turn the wheel.
Power steering has quit working unexpectedly while driving.. electronic traction control has quit working also at the same time.
Esc turns off and on by itself while driving. service power steering light comes on and the wheel is hard to turn i have to kill the car and restart it to get it to start working again. when i press my breaks the car jerks and the esc acvtive light comes on. the passenger side headlight goes in and out by itself i've replaced the bulb but it seems to be a wiring issue.
While sitting idle my steering wheel shakes erratically. sometimes when i start the car the service esc and power steering shows on my dash, when i turn the car off and back on again it will not appear again and the steering is back. the steering wheel shakes while driving if i turn the steering wheel slightly to one side it stops. it seems to happen when it is very cold out.
Vehicle power steering will stop working randomly. turn the car off and back on and the power steering will work. the behavior lines up with recall: 14v153000 however, vin is not covered posing a major safety issue. this has happened multiple times.
While driving power steering goes out it happens even going 10 miles per hour
I lose power steering while i'm driving. i have to stop and restart my car. after driving a few minutes the light comes on and says esc and i lose power steering again.
I called gm because my steering wheel is vibrating and i am loosing power steering. they informed me that there was a special repair window and not a recall. they informed me that i was not notified about this and that they window has passed so they will not be doing any repairs. the wheel shakes when turning the wheel and looses power steering.
I was driving and the steering wheel was really hard to steer
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 chevrolet malibu. while driving approximately 3 mph, the electronic stability control warning indicator illuminated and the steering wheel became firm and difficult to maneuver. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. bical chevrolet of valley stream (709 w merrick rd, valley stream, ny 11580, (512) 285-6500) was contacted and a diagnostic appointment was scheduled. the vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 14v153000 (steering). the manufacturer was not contacted. the approximate failure mileage was 176,381.
Over the past week, my vehicle was sending me a esc service message and i noticed there was something wrong with my power steering. this happens when my car is turned on. the power steering turns itself to manual steering making it hard to turn. i have to turn the car off resetting it to make the power steering work again. while the car is in motion the steering wheel is pulsating and i'm afraid it will go into manual steering. i brought it down to my mechanic and he informed me it was a torque sensor. he then said he did some research and found there was a recall back in 2014 (bulletin 14116b.) this bulletin explains the exact same symptoms my car is having. he called hurd chevy in johnson ri and they told him there was a recall. i then called hurd and they told me there was no recall for my vehicle and there was nothing they could do. i then called the dealership where i bought my vehicle (diamond chevy, auburn ma) and spoke to an advisor named sean. he told me there was a recall but the special extended warranty expired 3/25/19 and there was nothing they could do. i then contacted gm on their website and explained to them the situation. they told me there was no recall for my vehicle and there was nothing they could do. the problem is, i never received anything notifying me of this recall. it sounds like diamond knew about the recall but they never contacted me or fix it the last time i was there for maintenance. now i'll have to pay over $500 out of my own pocket to have my vehicle fixed. i have provided bulletin 14116b and the paperwork my mechanic researched and gave me.
Today i lost power steering again (also happened 2 times about a month ago). i was driving in downtown madison wi today when it happened, very unsafe situation. gm's website says there was a recall for some 2009 malibus in 2014, but when i just called gm now they say my vehicle wasn't included in the recall. but obviously, there is an issue with my vehicle. based on all the other complaints on the website, gm should be forced to recall these vehicles again! this time, all of them.
The car will display an esc service light and then the power steering will go out once that happens. when you turn the car off then back on the light goes away and then the power steering will go out again and the esc service will display again.
Power steering goes out at random moments it could be 1 mile of driving this vehicle or 1000 miles of driving this vehicle so it's very difficult to know when or if this car needs to be taken to the shop and i'm sure if there is a survey these vehicle have more owners due to the fact that this defect is so difficult to detect and they are sold off when detected. but this is extremely dangerous if the power steering suddenly gets extremely hard driving (cuts off) at high speeds. someone could crash and get seriously injured or potentially die. this should be considered a safty recall not an extended warranty and should be reopened because more people would go get thier car fixed if you tell them thier safety is at stake. and also the doors get locked shutt rendering passengers or drivers locked and unable to escape if danger is immanent.
While driving, i noticed the steering wheel would pulse, especially when turning the wheel left. after about 3 or 4 days, i left work(12/17/19), and "power steering service esc" showed on the dash display. since that time, the power steering has been intermittent. most times it goes out while i'm driving.
Sudden loss of electronic power steering. can happen while driving or at idle and can cause tough steering or loss or vehicle control. from the complaints ive read this seems to be more common during colder temperature days. could happen while driving in icy conditions... my daughter is now terrified to drive her vehicle. i have contacted gm and they refuse to cover any costs for this issue even though its a nation wide known issue with these vehicles.
I had a power steering light come one, and my esc light come on. these lights came on with no warning and disable those features while i was driving down the highway, going 57 mph, after a major ice and snow storm. i am unable to control my vehicle while it is on the road.
While driving down the road multiple warning lights popped up on the dash 'power steering' 'service esc off' 'brake light' 'service air bag' and the steering wheel becomes very hard to turn. trying to get the car pulled over to the nearest parking lot to my left i was almost t-boned by another vehicle because the turning process was so hard. after pulling into the parking lot and turning the vehicle off then back on it goes away then all the warning lights pop on again. this time after a few seconds everything on the dashboard goes blank including the radio and then the car dies out draining the cars battery completely.
Stopped car, got gas, turned car back on and had no power steering. then turned car off, waited a few minutes, turned it back on and power steering returned but power steering notice came up on the display.. noticed that there has been a recall for this but when entering the vin, this vehicle did not fall under the recall. i believe it should due to obvious safety concerns. i also read that chevrolet had a special recall for this that didn't show up in recall lists.
Lost power while driving on main road at 55 speed zone and car would only do 15 mph finally got to a store and got it stopped and steering was shaking and car shakes when i hit brakes
Power steering stopped working while driving twice today.
Twice while starting my car the indicator for power steering and service esc came on. when i would turn it off and restart it the indicators would go away. while driving in traffic on the parkway the indicators came back on and my steering locked. i had to wait until traffic slowed down enough to stop my car and restart quickly, hoping it would unlock. thank god it did and that my kids were not in the car with me. scary
Malubu 2009 bought new on 2009 april, even the first year the steering would become hard to turn while parallel parking. in the parking circle while climbing it would stiffen, it happens maybe 5 to 6 times a year and recently 2019 my wife was driving with kids and the steering froze. i was really afraid after learning about the incidence from my wife. it also happened to me in the city street, and in the parking lot while turning round and round. i am terrified that it would happen on the highway or on road again. i do not feel safe in this malibu car while driving any more. need help.
The power steering goes out and the traction control light comes on and service esc message comes across the message center. i cannot turn the wheel when this happens. i turn the car off and back on and the light goes out, power steering comes back for a second then the light trips again and it's out again as soon as i turn the wheel. this occurs while driving the vehicle at a slow pace.
Start the car and esc is off and power steering is off. shut the car off, restart and it comes on. sometimes it takes a couple of times. also when it is on and sitting with the car in drive, the steering wheel shakes back and forth.
Problem with steering control it stops in middle of the road not being able to turn the steering wheel so i asked the mechanics they said it mad neads the power steering and this one is electric is going to cost alot so my question is there ang recalls about this issue?
Tcs, abs, esc, etc intermittently stop working. electronic power steering occasionally stops working, usually when turning at low speeds. brake lights sometimes do not illuminate when pedal is pressed. i also replaced the wiring harness to the passenger head light that had shorted out and melted. there is a slew of electrical issues, and they usually get worse as the weather gets wetter and colder.
Loss of power steering while driving car. very hard to turn steering wheel, steering wheel locked up. eps, eps offand power steering light came on dash display. had to bring car to stop and restart engine and then was ok to drive.
Sudden loss of power steering while driving.
Power steering service light comes on and lose power steering! it has done it while turning mostly and it doesn't matter what the temperature is outside! 3 times this week alone! it has happened on while in motion on city streets lately & i have less than 80,000 miles on 2009
My power steering light went on and my esc light went on and it lost traction while waiting in line to drop my daughter off at school. i had been driving my car for 5mins and luckily it went out there and not while driving i could barely turn the wheel and ended up driving on the side walk.
2009 malibu ls 2.4l with electronic steering. i'll be driving and then out of the blue the steering goes out. hear a chime and the dic reports service esc. have to pull over, turn car off and then after a few cycles the steering will work again. very dangerous, car is eventually going to crash! this is totally not safe. i've owned over 12 gm cars and currently own 6 including a new malibu. hopefully gm will fix the steering because it's just dangerous. i only have 113,650 miles on it and everything else on the car works great except i can't have my kids drive this car if they are going to end up in a ditch. i've own this car since new and always took action on any and all recalls but i never got a notice about this one. i can now recreate this problem by just starting it and the instant you try to turn the wheel it happens so now the car is immobile. i was able to get it to stop the first time it happened but now i can't even back out of the driveway without it happening over and over. i was able to drive it up to the front of the driveway but i can't chance my kids driving the car if it means they are going ot crash and get hurt or hurt someone else.
Gauges go crazy on dashboard
On november 6, 2019 was driving my kids to school on a regular street, when suddenly without warning my power steering goes completely out. ran up on a curb almost hitting a pole because i was unable to turn wheel. i took vehicle to get power steering fluid and was told it was electrical. took to another place to have tested and a recall came up for vehicle. took to dealership and was told it was not a recall but it is listed as one. refuse to help fix the problem due to over mileage and me not being the original owner. refusal for rental or even a loaner.
My car is the 4 cylinder with electric power steering and when driving it and making a turn i lose all power steering, the traction control light comes on turning off the traction control and the esc service light comes on. my car was not on the recall list but is having the same problem as cars on the recall list.
Power steering quits abruptly
After pulling away from espresso stand the power steering on 2009 chevy malibu completely failed w/out warning. this occurred as i was just going into a right hand turn in a parking lot at approximately 5 to 10mph. i nearly hit the drivers door of a vehicle in the intersection as they were taking a left turn into the parking lot. the steering was extremely difficult and required both hands. i came to a stop as i completed the turn, just before the parking lot exited to a side road. the truck behind me was honking and my vehicle was barely positioned safely on 'my' side of the driveway. i had no choice but to turn right onto the roadway and pull as far off to the shoulder as i could. the shoulder; is about two car lengths long before it turns into a sidewalk. it should have been an easy task however, due to the steering i could barely get off the roadway- my front tires all but resting on the start of the sidewalk. the message center on my dash read "power steering" followed by "service esc" and the esc/ traction control indicator light on the dash was lit up. i called for help & they arrived within minutes. we are unable to access the power steering unit as is located underneath the alternator, and requires removal of the alternator. about 30 min after incident i moved car back several feet - steering was still hard. i turned it off. a few minutes later i turned back on. still getting message, but decided to drive the 5 mi back since only 2 turns were necessary. one person helping was in front and one person following. it was uneventful however warning indicators were still on & steering extremely difficult. 3hrs later i turn car on to get mileage and noticed that indicators are off. tested the steering- it has resumed to normal. vehicle is driven approximately 8mi hm. message displayed twice during this drive. vehicle had pre-trip inspection 1wk prior. 108k mile
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 chevrolet malibu. the contact stated that the power steering was faulty and the steering wheel seized while making a turn. the contact was unable to turn the steering wheel at all. when the contact turned off and restarted the vehicle, the steering wheel returned to normal; however, the traction control and esc indicators illuminated. the vehicle was driven to an independent mechanic, but could not be serviced because the failure was electric and the mechanic did not have the proper tools. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer and dealer were not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 70,520.
I have a 2009 chevy malibu .recall webisite reflects numerous recalls regarding my auto , make and model. while driving on a 6 lane hwy,, i have lost power steering twice. which is almost impossable to control. also, the automatic locks have stopped operating even when pressing the door auto lock/ unlock button .you can hear then trying to function however does not. also, while sitting in park, i crank my car and shift to reverse, my car does not go into reverse. sometime it will hit very hard and sometime not go into gear at all. i place my car in drive and move forward then to reverse , the car goes into reverse . on other occasions , i turn the car off, re-crank it and its fine. these problems are listed as recalls for the make and model of my auto however, doesn't apoear under my vin when i search. what can i do i am affraid for my safety while driving my car and also reluctant to drive it. these issues need to be resolved as they appear as recalls. when you loose control while driving and your safety is in jeopardy, its time to expect results.
While driving down the highway there was a sudden loss of electric power steering. just as described in bulletin 114116, making it hard for me to turn the steering wheel which caused the car to shake terribly.
Issue started with gear shift not going into park and then power steering started having issues and quit working while driving with wheel shaking back and forth. next transmission began slipping and now barely shifts. wheel jerks so hard when i turn now that it kicks my hand off wheel. coughlin automotive in london, ohio told us that recall had been fixed but refuses to give us proof. power steering has gone out in the middle of turning.
