We have classified the 519 complaints from 2009 Chevrolet Malibu about STEERING into the following categories.
Randomly without warning the esc light will come on and the cars electric steering goes out and makes it nearly impossible to steer. as of now you can shut the car down and wait a few minutes and start the vehicle and it will work but then shut down within 10 miles. this makes the car extremely dangerous to drive.
Takata recall. esc triggers with turns, power steering shuts down making it difficult to turn. on multiple occasions steering has failed causing me to stop in the middle of traffic, luckily able to avoid accidents. 09' malibu @ 148k
I recently bought this car for my son. the seller told me that the steering was not right . so while driving it home it became very hard to steer. the dash flashed "power steering". so i searched recalls and found the attached print out. but when i search though your website it says no open recalls. seems to be harder to steer while turning and at all different speeds.
Power steering light is on. before the light came on the wheel randomly became hard to turn and a danger to drive
Replaced battery, starter, and alternator driving down highway esu warning and traction service light come on power steering light came on. car loss power and cut off
Driving the car down the road and the power steering suddenly quits working making it extremely difficult to steer the car and increasing the chance of an accident. recalls have been issued for several malibu's with the same exact problem but this car has been excluded from the recall. this is a serious safety issue.
Steering wheel locks up in cold weather even after being warmed up for more than 5 minutes. happened twice, second time i did a normal turn to the right it locked up and had to pull over right away. always unlocks when restarting the car. right headlight also doesn't properly work. changed the light bulb two weeks ago and turned off just today. checked the bulb and still works. i've researched the problems online and there's been recalls and complaints about both of my problems.
My daughter was pulling out of our parking space and the power steering went out. power steering message and service esc popped up. she was unable to steer the car and came very close to hitting a parked car. she did not have enough strength to turn the steering wheel. it stayed parked blocking traffic until i could get home to move the car.
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 chevrolet malibu. the contact stated that the power steering was faulty and excessive force had to be used to turn the steering wheel. in addition, the electronic stability control indicator (esc) illuminated and the contact's spouse changed the brake hubs more than twice. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the esc sensor needed to be serviced and a new power steering system needed to be installed. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer and dealer were not made aware of the failures. the failure mileage was 154,700.
Takata recall. the whole car appears to be having problems at once. we go and get a certain minor problem fix and the next things pops up. having problems driving acceleration and breaking. doesn't seem to be safe to drive.
While driving each light comes on follow by power steering the wheel automatically started clicking while turning the wheel in the mist the wheel jerks the opposite direction make it hard to turn and can cause an accident. the power steering then goes completely out
The wheel is hard to turn...... sometimes it hard to turn and after turning right to left it get easier to turn stationary.
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 chevrolet malibu. while driving, the contact stated that the power steering was faulty. the contact turned off the engine and had to make multiple attempts to restart the vehicle. once the vehicle was restarted, the steering returned to normal. on another occasion, the steering wheel moved on its while the vehicle was idling and the power steering and esc warning indicators illuminated. the dealer and manufacturer were not contacted. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the failure mileage was unknown.
The service esc light came on, then the power steering light came on. i was in motion at the time about to make a turn. after a few days of the problem being intermittent, my car wouldn't start at all. i tried to start it and nothing. replaced battery and a engine power reduced light came on. car still won't start.
Power steering went out while driving. could not steer and had to get the vehicle towed home.
While operating my 2009 chevy malibu 4cyl in a turn, the electric power steering without any warning failed. a warning indicator afterwards then flashed power steering and electronic stability control failure. the result was almost total loss of control of vehicle while driving in heavy city traffic going through a traffic circle with children in backseat of my vehicle. this is because without warning the electronic power steering failed which caused me to panic emotionally and also caused me great physical difficulty as i am a woman and i all of a sudden had to garner all this strength to manually steer the vehicle in heavy city traffic. chevy is aware of this defect and will repair this if the vehicle is less than 10 years old and had less than 150,000 miles. we could have all died in a car crash. i think this should be recalled as this is a safety hazard that comes without any warning and renders the vehicle undrivable unless repaired as it is unsafe. the chevy mechanic indicates if both the sensor and motor need to be replaced it will cost $1200.00. my husband is a veteran and we cannot afford this costly repair.
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 chevrolet malibu. when making a turn, the steering failed and the electronic stability control indicator illuminated. the contact was able to gain control of the vehicle. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the dealer and manufacturer were not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 140,000.
Power steering failure. our 2009 chevrolet malibu lost its power steering with no warning when my wife was driving home from work. fortunately she was able to pull over on the highway. she turned the car off then restarted and it worked again. it worked for a few days then failed completely again when she was going shopping. chevrolet is recalling many vehicles with this problem including many 2009 malibu's. for some reason chevrolet tells us our 2009 malibu is not included. this is outrageous! my wife was shook up terribly and can not drive it till it gets fixed ( at great expense). believe the problem is a failure of the electric power steering mechanism/sensor. this is a very serious safety issue and chevrolet should be held accountable and responsible for correcting this problem on all affected vehicles. thank you.
Randomly loses power steering, i was leaving a concert sitting still went to move the car and no power steering, turned the car off and restarted it and had power steering again, that was the 2nd time it had happened, the first time i was in a drive thru again sitting still went to move and no power steering turned car off then on and power steering came back
Power steering, along with some other electric problems i am having with this car. i have only had the car for 3 years and already the steering wheel locks up frequently while driving my car on the highways, and traveling through the city. last night the power steering locked as me and my child was driving home. i had to leave the car parked on a side street because the car would not allow me to turn the steering wheel to operate the car properly. at this time i am seeking immediate help with this issue.
2009 chevy malibu experienced intermittent power steering failures identical to the problem described in the gm #14116b product safety notice (document id 4006770), which affects some 2009 chevy malibu. the issue often occurs when the vehicle it just started, then will go away once the car is restarted after it has warmed up. gm says this safety recall in not applicable to our vehicle's vin. i have no way to independently verify which torque sensor was installed in this vehicle, and wanted to report this issue.
My power steering just quit. i had to turn car off and then back on. it's done it twice now.
My car power steering goes out and comes pack after i turn my car off and on. sometimes the car won't start and the abs light and the traction control light is on on the dash and the inside lock and unlock buttons don't work. they will go up and down on their own in the beginning now if i open my door it locks on me. i changed the wheel barring on the front right tire because bell tire said that the sensor was bad and you have to replace the whole thing g. still having issues. i don't feel safe where i work i travel and i don't always work in the best of neighborhoods and i don't want to get my car broken into or robbed. and i surely don't want my power steering to go out again while driving on the high way and me crashing and possibly injuring or killing someone else.
My steering wheel wobbles/shakes extremely during stop of vehicle as well as in drive. at one point it said power steering service etc. i came across recall #14v153000, dealers and website says not found on my vehicle. i am wondering why that is since my problems are the same as the ones stated along with the same make, mode and year
Power steering randomly stops work. i was driving down a busy highway and it completely stoped working! i have to stop the car shut it off and back on for the power steering to start working again. also, when i start the car the wheel starts to shake (when in park) and also shakes going down the highway. happens at least 3-4 times a week.
Steering wheel randomly loses power and will not move or is very difficult to move. it happens at start up or while in motion. definitely a safety hazard. the steering wheel also shakes or twitches at slow speeds or at a stop.
Esc system is not working properly. power steering warning comes on at random times and it becomes very difficult to steer. once i get pulled over and shut the car off and back on it returns to normal. i was driving down the highway when it started. it happened a couple times last year and then again yesterday.
Takata recall, as i was dropping my daughter off at the bus stop i tried to pull back up to my house and the power steering came on and the wheel was hard to turn while my vehicle was in motion and there was alot of cars coming my way as i was trying to turn. i told my husband about it he went to check that it had power steering fluid in it and it was not low at all then he got in it to drive and it worked just fine. that was a scary experience for me. another incident when i went to go get my car inspected the third brake light would not come on but when i went to my mother in laws it worked just fine and when i left to go home lastnight it was coming on when i wasn't even pushing the brakes so me and my husband figured it was a shortage in it or the wires need replaced. someone needs to do something about this before there be an accident. i was doing some research about my vehicle and i seen that it had serveral recalls. the manufacturer recall #: n130036 the nhtsa recall #: 14v252
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 chevrolet malibu. while driving 75 mph, the power steering failed. also, the esc device, power steering, and traction control indicators illuminated. the contact had to use extra strength to steer the vehicle. the contact's parent had to come pick up the contact. the vehicle was not towed. the contact called kelley chevrolet (5220 value drive, fort wayne, in 46805, (260) 484-5566) and was advised to call gm's customer service line. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the failure mileage was 171,000.
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 chevrolet malibu. while driving approximately 35 mph, the power steering warning indicator illuminated and the steering wheel seized. the vehicle had to be restarted in order to operate normally, but the failure recurred. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who stated that the power steering needed to be replaced. richard kay superstore (1935 pearman dairy rd, anderson, sc 29625, (864) 332-4031) informed the contact that there was no recalls for the vehicle. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that the vin was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 14v153000 (steering). the approximate failure mileage was 217,156.
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 chevrolet malibu. while operating the vehicle, the service esc and power steering warning messages appeared. the cause of the failure was not determined. the manufacturer was notified and did not assist. the local dealer was not notified. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 112,000.
The electrical power steering and esc control are turned off as soon as i start the cars ignition. when the car is parked , the power steering begins to twitch the wheel and does not stop. when you turn the car off then back on, it resolves the problem for several seconds then continues to do the same thing. this problem creates a very dangerous car when combined when traveling down the road. the power steering has also done this whole driving. this is a huge issue in manufacturing and poses a life threat to my 100lb fiance and our newborn baby.
Power steering quits without warning. randomly.... turn the car off and back on it comes back. sometimes gotta turn it on and off several times before it works. then driving down the road outta the blue no power steering. it becomes a real fight to keep the car on the road at that point
Intermittently upon starting the stationary vehicle the 'service esc' light comes on followed by 'power steering' light. the power steering won't work. turning the ignition off and restarting the vehicle 1-3 times usually corrects the problem. also, while driving this same problem occurs where the power steering goes out, without warning. extremely dangerous when going around bends or turning. lastly, when moving (usually backing up, but also while driving) the steering wheel turns back and forth by itself as if the power steering is engaging but no turning is required. i've lost control on slick roads and in parking lots because of all of these problems. i also noticed that there's a recall for the 2012 malibu for something similar to what my problem is, but not for the 2009 model. however, when looking up the 2012 recall it says 2004-2012 malibu were under recall, yet my vin for 2009 malibu shows no recalls. very odd. if not fixed for free, i'll be looking into class action.
Power steering works randomly but mostly not at all. power steering, service traction control light. abs light and esc flash on dash display all in one week. driving to work made a left hand turn and power steering went out causing me to drive off the road. power steering came back on and then out again. and has been off since
Service powering steering light came on and steering went out immediately went out no warning was not able to steer car. got the car home turned off let sit turn back on had steering but steering wheel shook back and forth moving and at idol.took to dealership and was told recall expired 10/18 but was never informed that there was one ended up having to pay 1200.00
Power steering goes out. warning message on dash reads "power steering - service esc" this happens when i am driving and goes out without warning. today it went out while i was driving on the highway at 65 mph rounding a long sweeping curve. dangerous! i see that there is a recall on this problem - gm recall # n140115, but it doesn't cover the month that my malibu was built, which is 12/08. it covers other malibu's and other vehicles. my car has the exact same problem as theirs. gm definitely needs to expand this recall to include all cars that have been built at this time.
Takata recall i have has this issue for about 2weeks now when driving my esp light appears on the dash and the word power steering as well i done took it in for a full diagnostic and by my vehicle being electric nothing can be done due to this issue a few repair shops stated my car has a recall i just want to get this handled correctly because its time consuming please help me out thanks
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 chevrolet malibu. while operating the vehicle, the power steering malfunctioned and the steering wheel became difficult to turn in either direction. also, the traction control, electronic stability control, and service power steering warning indicators illuminated. the vehicle became difficult to stop. griffin chevrolet (11100 w. metro auto mall, milwalkee, wi) and the manufacturer were notified of the failure. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the failure mileage was 170,000.
My esc light to service came on, which also triggered the power steering to go off. this happened a week ago when i was driving . when i called gm, i was told there was no recall, that was a special coverage and it expired in october if 2018. well it's never been a problem before and now i have a vehicle that has issues the manufacture know about, and they know it was a defect but i am now expected to pay for a $1300 repair myself.
Anytime i'm driving my car wether it be on the highway or through town, the steering power gives out. it happens every 5-7 minutes i would say. i have to turn the car off and turn it back on just so i can readjust it and get the steering wheel moving again. this just started happening about a week ago.
Approximately 2 months ago my daughter was driving her car and steering became incredibly difficult to steer. fortunately, she managed to make it home. took to local mechanic and was told power steering was the reason. he told us to take to local chevy dealership d/t the fact that there was a special warranty/recall on power steering. took to local chevy dealership and confirmed was power steering but stated it was a warranty of 10 year or 150,000. car has current mileage of 133,000 . 10 year was said to be up on 12/13/2018 so refused to fix. did some research and saw an article about recall from vp of gm . said in article that they are taking responsibility for safety concern and will fix all the cars that have this problem. spoke with executive car center at gm and refuse to fix vehicle. sent numerous letters to vp of safety at gm . (xxxx) with no response. luckily for my daughter she was on local street when power steering went out and not on highway etc. parts of this document have been redacted to protect personally identifiable information pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

Power steering goes out randomly while driving or when parked, dash reads: power steering, esc off, service esc. this has happened multiple times on the highway, on city streets, while turning and while going straight. there was a recall on other models of chevy malibu but my 4-cylinder was excluded. there are many other similar complaints. a new recall to include our models is needed. mileage is at approx. 173,000
Power steering notification comes on dash and steering wheel is hard to turn. i turn the car off and restart and then its fine but shortly after driving notice flashes on dash again and am unable to turn steering wheel.
