Recently reported STEERING problems on 2009 Chevrolet Malibu

Power steering came on randomly and steering wheel would not turn left or right. vehicle had never had a power steering problem before.

Ive been seeing my power steering light come on sometimes when i crank my car and the steering wheel wouldnt turn. i would turn off my car and then restart my car and it would go away. on sunday december 3rd 2017 i was headed home and all of a sudden the power steering light came on and my steering wheel locked up and i could barely force my car to turn an inch to miss the light pole i was about to hit. now my steering wheel will not turn at all and i am unable to drive my car.

Turned right out of a parking lot at low speed. the power steering stopped working, making the steering wheel very hard to turn. the power steering warning illuminated on the information panel. drove home several miles, turned off the car, restarted it to diagnose it, and the power steering worked correctly. this would have been very dangerous at highway speeds. other '09 malibus have been recalled for this problem, but not my vin.

Engine light constantly on. dealership does not know what is wrong. showing code p1174 & no one knows what this is. power steering quit working while driving on city street.esc light will turn on. dashboard lights will go on and off. doors will lock them selves locking me inside.this is happening since august 2017-present (12-29-17).multiple trips to dealership where vehicle was purchased and all they do is reset sensor and tell me to wait until it breaks. i'd say it is already broken.

I am not sure where to start. door locks intermittently don't work, bluetooth just stopped working, have had to change headlight bulbs 3 times in 2 years, power steering went out (had that repaired by dealer at not cost), ac/heater/defroster used to shut off intermittently, now it just stopped working, driver's side seat heater stopped working, instrument panel randomly throws up error code (example: service airbag, service engine) oh and the paint is fading on hood roof and trunk. car has 75,000 miles and i used to love it. no i won't drive it out of town.

Tl* the contact owns a 2009 chevrolet malibu. while driving at any speed, the steering lost power and the power steering warning indicator illuminated. the dealer was not contacted. the manufacturer stated that there was no recall and referred the contact to nhtsa. the failure recurred. the failure was not diagnosed. the failure mileage was approximately 200,000.

Service esc lights comes on and the service abs

My seventeen-year-old daughter was coming home from cheering at a basketball game at 9:30 p.m. she was driving up signal mountain from dunlap tennessee on hwy127 about three-quarters of the way up the mountain her power steering stopped working. while trying to get control of the car she was unable to make a turn and ran into the guardrail, destroying the guardrail and then shot across the road ending up in a embankment. thank god she was not physically hurt. her car is totaled and she is completely traumatized, having nightmares and not wanting to drive ever again. i never received a recall notice or any kind of warning that this was a possibility of happening or i would have most definitely had it fixed. the power steering head went out one other time before and she parked the car and by time my husband got to where she was the power steering was barking again we had the car inspected by a mechanic and he said he could see nothing wrong with it this was about a year ago so we just assumed it was a one-time occurrence little did we know it almost killed our daughter had this happened 15 ft sooner where there was no guardrail she would have went off the side of the mountain and more than likely died. it's very disturbing that i knew nothing very irresponsible of chevrolet i do have a police report with all of this stated on it i was not able to get it at the time of reporting this that would be more than happy to send it if needed. at this time my daughter has no car she is a senior in high school fixing to go to college in less than a year so we are stuck paying for college and a car because she only had liability insurance. i think the recall number is n140115. 2009 chevrolet malibu power steering failure

Tl* the contact owns a 2009 chevrolet malibu. the contact stated that the esc warning indicator illuminated and the steering wheel became difficult to turn left or right. the vehicle was pulled over, restarted, and the warning indicator dimmed. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the vin and failure mileage were not available.

The 2009 chevrolet malibu's have been recalled for the "electric power steering assist". i currently own a 2009 chevrolet malibu and had an incident over the weekend in which my power steering assist was lost and steering wheel would not move and was locked in place. after taking the vehicle to the local chevrolet dealership service center, they advised that these models have a recall for this issue, however, my vehicle was 1025 miles over the mileage to have it fixed under the recall. after research on gm site on the nhtsa site, we found information collaborating this recall, in which it stated that under this recall the dealership has to fix this; however, my chevrolet malibu's vin number did not pop up on this recall. nhtsa states that this problem affects 2009 chevrolet malibu's and does not list vin's affected. we would assistance in having this vehicle also added to the recall list and having gm fix this problem which is a huge safety issue.

Takata recall when i turn my vehicle on the esc light and powering steering light comes on and i can not turn my wheel. i have to turn my vehicle off and back on for it to go away, it happens every time i turn it on now that it is winter

Tl* the contact owns a 2009 chevrolet malibu. while making a turn, the steering seized, and the power steering and service esc warning indicators illuminated. the vehicle was taken to bellamy strickland chevrolet (145 industrial blvd, mcdonough, ga 30253), but had not yet been diagnosed. the vin was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 14v153000 (steering). the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 59,000. *bf consumer was turning right while driving on mcdonough pkwy and realized it was harder to steer, at the same time a warning light came on. updated 8/22/18*jb

While i was driving on a street i suddenly felt the steering wheel lock up on me making it extremely hard to turn. thankfully i was able to get my car into a parking lot without causing an accident. i was then told my the auto shop that the issue was the steering column problem which apparently is a common issue with my car but for some reason my vin number was not included in the recall?

Loss power steering on express way, being 77 years old had hard time trying to stay on highway. look on internet and seen recall in 2009 for problems with dorman parts for steering.want to by new chev but afraid next buyer might get in bad accident what should i do.

There has been a recall issued for certain 2009 malibu mine does not fit in that recall but i am experiencing the problem on that recall my steering went out like it says in that recall and i almost had an accident because i could not steer my car

They try to fix everyting but they still come on

Tl* the contact owns a 2009 chevrolet malibu. while driving approximately 25 mph, the power steering ability seized. also, the power steering warning indicator illuminated and the chime sounded. the contact had to pull over to the side of the road and turned the vehicle off. when the vehicle was restarted, the failure went away. the contact also stated that the failure occurred at least twenty times previously. the vehicle was not taken to an independent mechanic or the dealer for diagnostic testing. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 70,898.

Sitting at a stop sign and my service esc light came on. as i turned onto the highway i noticed my steering wheel was very tight and the power steering light was also on. it was very hard to turn the steering wheel. i immediately pulled over, and turned the car off.

The electric power steering assist has stopped working on three occasions in the last month. power steering warning light appears. it has been when the vehicle is driving straight or while turning during the first mile after start on a city street. the vehicle will become difficult to steer. i pull to the side of the road, turn off engine, and restart. it will then drive without problem. i noted a recall on the 2009 malibu #14v153000 but have not been notified by chevrolet.

The car's power steering went out while i was in motion, turning in a parking garage. an error message displayed saying "power steering failure - service esc". the first time this came up was about three months ago, and i took it to the chevy dealership and they fixed it under warranty. this same problem just came up again and i am beginning to think that this is a known problem, given the amount of recall information i've seen about this issue.

Tl* the contact owns a 2009 chevrolet malibu. while driving 60 mph, the contact felt an abnormality while steering the vehicle. the contact pulled the vehicle over to the side of the road and everything appeared normal. the contact began to drive again when the steering wheel pulled to the right without warning. the contact pulled the vehicle over to the side of the road again. the contact stated that the steering wheel and wheels started to move independently and the power steering, service esc, and traction control warning indicators illuminated. the vehicle was towed to the dealer (pinegar chevrolet buick gmc of branson, 163 adair rd, branson, mo, 65616). the contact was informed that the vehicle would be diagnosed on the next business day, july 17, 2017. the manufacturer stated that the vehicle was not included in the special coverage adjustment for loss of electric power assist due to the vehicle being a salvage title under case number: [xxx]. the manufacturer stated that the only way the vehicle would be covered was if there was a recall or safety issue. the manufacturer referred the contact to nhtsa. no further assistance was offered. the failure mileage was approximately 93,850. parts of this document have been redacted to protect personally identifiable information pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

Our 2009 ltz has the same low-speed steering issue as described in your 2014 recall for the 2008-2009 chevrolet malibu. but, the local chevrolet dealer says that our vin was not included. obviously, this defect extends beyond the vin numbers recalled by the nhtsa. recall number 14v153000 recall date 03/31/2014 component steering: electric power assist system

Was driving the car to work, stopped at mc donald's to get breakfast in the drive through. left mc donald's was curving onto the on ramp to 291 hwy when i lost power steering almost causing me to go off the side of the road. a warning message was displayed. i then got the car pulled over and turned off the vehicle. when i turned the vehicle on everything was ok. it has done this on multiple occasions.

Doors lock and you cant get out of or in the car even if your holding an infant child and its 3 degrees outside and i can't use the unlock button to get in and the [xxx] key wont even open the door. its just stuck and who knows for how long sometimes in last just 3-5 mins other others going on 40 mins. the headlights have been replaced 3 times countless tail lights. i had to put replace the windhield wiper assembly that one sucked i could not operate the car for a week unless it would rain and this was happening this april when its always raining they actually quit working on fourth of the july going 70mph down interstate 79 in pouring rain. i purchased as many rain deterrents as i could try out which none last but a few mins.. then between getting pulled over by police countless times for headlight being out and i fix it then the same one or even the other side the next week will go out just 1 month later it goes back out and that same cop stop you again and they don't believe you that it was just replaced. then the interiour lights all of them from gauges and headlamps turn on. my car is currently telling me to service svc tire sensors and other abbreviated sensors and traction control light is on. also and maybe the most dangerous is the cruise control malfunctions which range from only working occasionally to acceleration engages if you scroll threw screen options and use cruise control simultaneously . and sometimes my trunk will just pop open when the car starts. the plastic hub caps constantly fall off and the back of the drivers seat plastic backing has broken loose the steering colum it sounds like u joints that have worn or a hydraulic issue parts of this document have been redacted to protect personally identifiable information pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

I have on occasion at least 4 times that i vivid recall had a situation where i get message to service esc and then i have no power steering. now the steering wheel moves back and forthe then i am stopped at a light and move the wheel slightly. it has happened when in motion and when it has been stopped.

My power steering goes out and at the same time my traction control light comes on as well as the esc light my car vin is not on the recall but it is having the same problems as the recalled cars

Tl* the contact owns a 2009 chevrolet malibu. while driving 60 mph, the power steering wheel failed to turn left or right without warning. the contact pulled over to the side of the road, restarted the vehicle, and it returned back to normal. the failure recurred several other times. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the torque sensor needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 224,000.

I am reporting two incidents! approximately 6 months ago my break lights starting turning on again (after the recall was fixed a year prior) while diving the vehicle. i would tap the breaks and the light would turn off (giving cars behind me the idea that i was breaking when i wasn't and when i was breaking to slow down, they couldn't tell). it still does this problem. now as of 3/18/2017 while driving on the highway my "service esc power steering" light came on. it was very hard to steer off the highway or even get the vehicle home. as i research my vehicle online, these two issues were recalled back in 2014. i don't know if my vehicle was serviced for the power steering recall as i bought the vehicle on 12/26/2014. i do know that the break light recall was serviced because i took my vehicle in for the recall. i have an appointment tomorrow at the chevrolet dealer, but i know i'm going to have to pay $1200 to $1600 for this repair. something needs to be done about these recalls! someone needs to make sure they don't continue to happen every year or every other year going forward.

Tl* the contact owns a 2009 chevrolet malibu. the contact stated that the steering wheel seized several times without warning. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the torque sensor failed and the part needed to be replaced. the vehicle was excluded from nhtsa campaign numbers: 14e044000 (steering) and 14v153000 (steering). the manufacturer was notified of the failure and provided no solution. the contact was uncertain that the failure would not recur if the oem parts were replaced. the approximate failure mileage was 224,000.

Vehicle is stating service power steering and the steering wheel locks up and i am unable to drive my vehicle. from what i have read online this is known problem with 2009 vehicles but yet my car has not been included in the recall. it is not safe to drive my children in this vehicle, and i shouldn't be responsible for fixing a part that is obviously defective.

Loud winding noise while driving. service traction/esc off light illuminates while car is on. accelerates very slowly and brake lights come on randomly

Sudden loss of power assist while in motion on city street. this made changing lanes and turning onto other streets very difficult, especially when it first occurred. aaa towed the car and did a diagnosis check and said they received 2 codes for steering sensors. they said they could not repair my car and i would have to take it to a dealer. they did not charge be for the diagnosis but also did not give me the printed report. the power assist sis restore when the car was shut-off and restarted. how can it be that gm would would sell a vehicle that can suffer a total failure of the steering due to a sensor code without providing a fail safe mode? as the steering assist was restored with the shot-off and restart of the car, it was the ecu that failed and the assist motor was still in functioning condition.

The power steering fails while driving.

Tl* the contact owns a 2009 chevrolet malibu. while driving 30 mph, the steering wheel shook violently and seized without warning. the vehicle was taken to a local dealer (autonation chevrolet, west colonial 3707 w. colonial drive, orlando, fl 32808) where it was diagnosed that the steering column failed and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure and stated that the vin was included in the warranty expansion. the failure mileage was approximately 127,812.

Power steering stop working while the car was in motion. the manual steering still work but it is harder. i stopped the car, turned off the engine and it works again. this is a safety issue. i called the dealership and they said i must bring the car in for a diagnosis test that will cost $144.00. if they found the problem, i will not be charged but if they do not find the problem i will be paid $144.00. i read the recall notices from nhtsa website but it indicated "some 2009 malibu had this issues"

I recently bought this car at a buy here pay here and after one say the power steering went completely out on the vehicle. i researched and found a recall on the power steering unity but dealership said it was expired?

tl* the contact owns a 2009 chevrolet malibu. the contact stated that while driving at approximately 60 mph, the steering wheel lost power. the esc/power steering warning light illuminated. the vehicle was then merged to the shoulder of the road and powered off and restarted but the failure recurred. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was approximately 79,800.

While driving down the highway the esc light with service power steering came on and my power steering turned off almost causing me to lose control of the vehicle.

While driving service esc light would come on followed by power steering light. the steering wheel would become difficulty to turn. i would turn into a safe place turn the vehicle off for a minute and the vehicle would work fine. this will happen off and on at different times. the service esc light come on followed by power steering and the steering wheel locking up making it difficult to turn all this will happen while i'm driving scared the day lights out of me every time it would happen. being looking around to see if there are any recalls on the vehicle as far as this goes. will happen every time i'm in motion on city street or interstate very scary as i'm a female driving this car 2009 chevy mailbu ltz 4cyl this has being going on for months now still making payments on the vehicle started purchasing it in 2017 not sure of the exact time it started

Tl* the contact owns a 2009 chevrolet malibu. while driving approximately 60 mph, the steering ability seized and the power steering warning indicator illuminated. the contact slowed donn to a complete stop on the shoulder. the vehicle was driven to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the power steering failed and needed replacement. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 170,000.

A few days ago while picking up my son from school the steering wheel began to lightly vibrate. as of this evening, i went to start up the car and now the display says power steering esc and the wheel is extremely hard to steer.

I have a 2009 chevy malibu 4 cyl with electric power steering. it is having the same issues as the rest of the recalled malibu's but mine is not on the recall list. the power steering light flashed shuts off the traction control and loses power steering while going down the highway

While turning (in motion) through a parking lot after exiting the highway, the vehicle jerked, and the power steering assist failed (it became very difficult to drive). the following message then displayed: service esc power steering.

The power steering assist (eps) randomly stops working. the car must be restarted several times to get it working again. this defect appears to be covered under recall #n140115, specifically bulletin #14116. see the links: https://www.consumeraffairs.com/news/gm-recalls-more-than-a-million-vehicles-with-power-steering-problems-040114.html http://media.gm.com/media/us/en/gm/vehicles.detail.html/content/pages/news/us/en/2014/mar/0331-power-steering.html i have contacted a local chevrolet dealer and gm (800.630.2438) and they refuse to fix this vehicle under the aforementioned recall and bulletin.

Power steering failure @ approx. 152000 miles. i'd elaborate on the specifics, but gm knows of the issue and they timing of the occurrence can vary. serviced "steering column bad" replaced. not covered by special warranty outside of mileage. fact: 162,283 gm vehicles of same model year were recalled (source gm website). instead they chose to offer special coverage which expires clearly hoping to limit their loss from vehicles out of commission, those that never have problem, and consumer being forced to cover out of pocket.

Tl* the contact owns a 2009 chevrolet malibu. the contact stated that the electric power steering off and service off warning indicators illuminated and the steering wheel suddenly seized. george matick chevrolet (14001 telegraph rd, redford charter twp, mi 48239, (313) 531-7100) replaced the internal dome light more than ten times due to an internal electrical short, but the failure persisted. the dealer made no mention of campaign number: 15356 special coverage adjustment (loss of electric power steering assist). the contact did not know if the vin was included in nhtsa campaign numbers: 14e044000 (steering) and 14v153000 (steering). the manufacturer was notified. the vin was not available. the approximate failure mileage was 130,000.

The power steering intermittently locks up. there is a traction warning symbol. the car can only be steered at that time with great effort. sometimes problem is alleviated by restarting car.

I went to the pharmacy to pick up my prescriptions having no issues with my 2009 chevy malibu. when i started to leave the pharmacy, the steering locked for know known reason making the car unable to be driven. *tr

Steering wheel locked while driving on the highway. pulled over to the side of the road, very hard to steer. a yellow triangle with skid marks behind a car appeared on the dash and a message that read service esc appeared followed by power steering. *tr

Power steering light is on, while driving the steering wheel jerks like it is driving itself. i had my transmission replaced and the mechanic advised me to look into it stating i can loose steering at anytime. i called a chevrolet dealership and they stated there was no recall on my vin number. if it is happening to the 2009 malibus, how can they distinguish which cars it is faulty in? in motion the steering jerks when sitting still the steering wheel moves by itself
