We have classified the 519 complaints from 2009 Chevrolet Malibu about STEERING into the following categories.
Every time car is driven power steering and esc errors show on display and traction control is turned off. errors show up while driving and also while stationary. there was a recall for this year and model but does not show for my vin.
I was pulling into my child's school to pick him up and in the middle of the turn my steering went out. i almost hit some kids cause my car steering wheel stopped turning in the middle of the turn. my car now has an alarm "power steering service esc". i read there is a recall on this for 2009 malibu's, but my vin number says that my car is not on that list. i am trying to find out before i stick all lf my own money into getting it repaired. it is nhtsa reference # 14v153000 and gm's recall # n140115 that i have found. *tr
In my 2009 chevy malibu the second day of buying this car the power steering goes out and the traction control light turns on along with the power steering service esc warning shows up below! the steering wheel shakes when stopped at a light or in park! there are many recalls on this i have seen on the gmc website but it still hasn't shown up on my vehicle vin so it has been very difficult to drive!
When starting my car the esc light comes on and i lose power steering. if i shut the car off and jiggle the steering wheel and then turn the car back on it usually works fine until i shut the car off again. i took it to a mechanic who checked the error code and it came up "c0545". so now my whole steering column needs to be replaced. why was my car not included in the recall if it's doing the same thing as the ones that were recalled???? i have roughly 133,000 miles on it.
Vin not covered under recall 14116, power steering quits and it is nearly impossible to control the car at any speed. power steering no longer works. *tr
While in park and engine running, steering wheel shimmies and shakes. while driving the steering wheel shimmies and slips. gives a sense that steering control will be lost. on occasion the "eps" and "power steering" warnings come on and the car loses power steering making it very difficult to steer the car while driving. *tr

My electronic power steering failed to operate while driving suddenly and without warning. along with this happening, an esc inoperative light is illuminated along with a service power steering message on the instrument display. vehicle steering very hard to operate. have to turn car off and on multiple times to clear message and for some reason the power steering resumes to work. this now is a constant occurrence, to the point that i am unable to rely on this vehicle for safe travels.
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 chevrolet malibu. while driving approximately 50 mph, the steering wheel seized without warning. the contact had to use greater effort to steer the vehicle to the side of the road. the vehicle was driven back to the contact's residence where it was towed to a dealer. the dealer diagnosed that the torque sensor assembly failed and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the vin was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 14v153000 (steering). the failure mileage was approximately 182,964.
Esc traction esc power steering light comes on and car bogs down and steering is hard to control. took malibu to dealership 3 times for the same esc problem with no resolution and thousand spent.
Car mileage is at 75,300 and i am hearing a rubbing/clunking sound when ever i turn my steering wheel to the right and my turn signal lever stopped automatically releasing after i have turned which is now also making a weird noise. i see there was a recall for the steering in 2014 but i purchased the from a dealer in 2015. how do i find out if the dealer serviced the recall???

Was driving and was about to make a turn the service ecs came on and power steering started going across the screen. my steering wheel locked up and traction control light came on i almost had a wreck
My power steering all of the sudden has started not working. sometimes if i tun the car off and back on it will work but it also goes out on me while i am driving down the road.
I've had three instances, two in the same day, while either standing still in park in a parking lot or in traffic on a city street and my dashboard says service esc power steering and the traction control light stays illuminated. it becomes near impossible to steer the vehicle once this happens and has almost caused me to be in accidents each time. when i'm finally able to pull over, i have shut the car off and turned it back on after a few minutes and it resets the computer and operates regularly but on the last occasion it came back on two minutes after the reset. i've read there are recalls on other models but not on the 2009 malibu. this is a safety concern and could potentially cause serious accidents, injuries and even death depending on when the steering goes out (slow traffic speeds vs fast highway speeds) because there isn't any type of warning.
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 chevrolet malibu. while driving 15 mph, the power steering failed without warning. the contact stated that it became difficult to steer the vehicle. the vehicle was taken to the dealer to be diagnosed. the contact was informed that the power steering module needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 14v153000 (steering). the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 155,000.

Driving down an expressway about 60mph and the power steering quit working, a message displayed on my dash "power steering service esc" the abs indicator light also displayed at the same time. i have no power steering. my car has approx 125,000 miles on it. i googled the issue and there was a recall for this issue for 2006-2007 chevy malibus so i contacted the dealer and they said my car does not have a recall for this issue. i do have a recall that i have not had fixed yet for the brake lamp malfunction 13036 which dealer stated is unrelated issue. i see several other people online are reporting this same issue for the 2009 4 cylinder chevy malibu's. i would hope gm will recall this and take care of the problem.
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 chevrolet malibu. the contact stated that the power steering warning indicator illuminated. whenever the contact attempted to make a left or right turn, there was a clunking noise underneath the hood. whenever the power steering warning indicator illuminated, it became difficult to maneuver the steering wheel. the contact would have to shut off and restart the vehicle in order to regain full control of the power steering. the contact called the palmettto chevrolet dealer (122 4th avenue, po box 766, conway, sc 29528; 843-248-4283) where it was diagnosed that the power steering motor and sensor needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 200,000.

It takes great effort to steer the wheels because the electrical power steering is off. on the dashboard, it says that my esc is off and it needs service.

Esc warning light began going off intermittently(usually when turning steering wheel to the right) at around 60,000 miles. i have taken it to the dealership and they initially recommended replacing the "sensor". the vehicle now has approximately 85,000 miles on it and the steering will become very difficult at times while driving. the dealer is now recommending complete replacement of the steering system. my vehicle has not yet been included in any steering related recalls, but there is clearly a defect with my vehicle.

Power steering loss randomly, chevy will fix some models but not all. mine was covered in a special warranty but due to mileage its no longer covered. not fair, repair is expensive and some other models have a lifetime warranty with the same problem.

Twice i have been stopped and go to turn the wheel and it won't budge. i have had to shut the car off and let it sit for a minute before it will work again. my steering is also very stiff when turning to the left, but loose when turning to the right. my power steering fluid is fine. my vin doesn't show up on the steering recall list.
My power steering went out and all chevy deaslerships are saying my vin isnt apart of the recall so i'd have to pay $1300 to get it fixed. this issue can cause crashes , ive had alost 6 accidents since the power steering went out

I purchased this vehicle in 2011. on four occasions the car has lost power steering. it happens while turning. i have to pull over, turn the engine off and back on again in order for the power steering to function. it has happened on a city street as well as while exiting the highway.
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 chevrolet malibu. while driving approximately 35 mph, the steering wheel seized without warning. the vehicle was maneuvered to the side of the road where the engine was turned off. after restarting, the vehicle resumed normal operation. the failure recurred whenever the vehicle was in operation. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 150,000.
When driving the power steering and esc turns off randomly
Had a power steering malfunction at 45 mph coming off of the highway onto an onramp that nearly caused an accident. power steering went out and service esc light came on. i'm 6 foot 6, 260 lbs. a smaller person would not have been able to control the vehicle at this speed. this morning, i started the car and the power steering was out. i shut down the engine and started it again and the power steering worked. i am afraid to drive it in fear of the safety of my children.
I have a 2009 chevrolet malibu and the service esc light comes on followed by power steering and then there is a sudden power steering lost. chevrolet says it is not their responsibility yet there are thousands of records of the same issue and they will not cover the cost to fix it.vehicle was in motion
Electric power steering intermittently fails. eps warning appears on dic and hard steering until car is stopped and restarted. failure happens when car is moving and stationary. car is not included in nhtsa campaign number: 14v153000 because it was manufactured in august 08 vs june 08. this recall must be expanded. a simple internet search can reveal that
My electric steering pump suddenly stop working yesterday while driving on street. two warning messages appeared on eic. " check steering" "esc off check". i have read on many forums, by chevy malibu owners, have complain having same issue. i' m concern for my family safety if this steering pump fails again at greater speed.
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 chevrolet malibu. the contact stated that he was experiencing the same failures as listed in nhtsa campaign number: 14v153000 (steering). the vin was not included in the recall. while driving 70 mph, there was an abnormal grinding noise coming from the steering column. the vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 120,000.
Driving this car loses its power steering. gm states my car is not included in recall even though they installed a defective sensor.
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 chevrolet malibu. while driving 50 mph, the steering wheel became difficult to turn and moved independently to the left and right. the contact had to apply force to the steering wheel in order to steer the vehicle and keep it in position as the front of the vehicle began to shake. "power steering, eps not engaged" was displayed across the message board. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the electronic power steering sensor needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 189,000.
The passenger low beam light burns out frequently. upon fixing the connection was melted. the steering becomes hard to turn while driving slow or slowing down to turn.
Power steering msg comes on while driving. took in for repair and power steering torque sensor needs replaced. this is listed for other malibu years but not 2009 the repair cost $575. the vehicle is not listed under current recall but suffered the same problem. problem occurs while driving and is a known safety issue affecting other model years. i was sent a letter informing me of a "special warranty" from gm and told to take the letter to the repairshop. the dealership said i would have to pay for the repairs even though they are covered under the "special warranty letter" because my car is outside the warranty coverage parameters!!
Vehicle in airport parking lot and temp was 29 degrees. started vehicle and proceeded to leave parking lot. power steering warning appeared on dash board. continue diving on interstate for next 15 minutes to reach home. about a half mile before reaching home, service esc appeared on dash. did not lose control o vehicle and vehicle has no been moved since. new years day 2016, no dealer service is open. i understand this is a known issue with the malibu, however my vin # does not appear to be part of the recall. will take to dealership for diagnosis.
Upon driving after a while on the interstate and then to residential driving ..steering wheel "locked up " while the panel flashed "esc " and " power steering ".turned off car ...waited restarted and was able to drive ..shortly. once again , it repeated the same problem at a intersection , where i nearly got hit and was unable to turn my steering wheel to get out of traffic nor pull to the side. i had to wait i traffic , again after turning the car off. restarted, but this time was able to get home with my son in his car seat in the back ..very scary for us.this has happened before , recently several days ago and prior, but first time with my son in the car. seems to happen more with the temperatures lowering.....
I intermittently lose power steering on the vehicle while driving. the information display flashes that the power steering and traction control are disabled. this occurs both when stationary and while moving. i received a letter from chevrolet in regards to this problem and was advised by the letter to take it in to the dealer if this problem existed. when i took it in to have the repair done, i was told that it was not doing it at that time and that there was nothing they could do. i called chevrolet customer assistance center and was told the same thing. i was told that basically i had to wait until it failed again and hope that it did not cause an accident by the customer service representative before they could do anything about it.
