I was driving and my esc light came on and i had a difficult time steering my car in the worse traffic i could be in. i was lucky enough i got off the side of the road before i hit someone and put it in a ditch. also, lucky enough it was me driving and not my [xxx] year old daughter. i called the dealer and they got me right in to get it fixed, but i had to pay for it out of my own pocket. however, when i contacted gm i was told i would be reimbursed for this and i would get a letter as of april 28th. i noticed it was moved to may 28th and as of today i have still yet to be notified? does someone have to be injured or killed to get an actual response from someone? updated 1/9/2015 *js parts of this document have been redacted to protect personally identifiable information pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

Was making a left turn out of a parking lot and the steering wheel locked up, my son was unable to steer the car quick enough because it caught him off guard and hit a parked car. *tr

I am still in shock that there are still so many complaints with looks to be the same vin that is being overlooked by gm. my car was fixed last year, yet it still feels unstable after having to pay 890 out of pocket for a new column. how can a company just pick some vin's from that year, when it is obvious it has caused the same exact problems for vins that were not included. are we suppose to hire a lawyer and pay even more out of pocket forth. look at these complaints still pouring in. i will never be buying another gm vehicle due to the lack of responsibility, and i highly will be suggesting that anyone stay clear of them as well. a month after i got my car fixed they issued the recall, mine was not included and i cannot do a [xxx] thing about it. meanwhile others get their cars fixed, id like to know what makes mine so different that it doesn't qualify?? *tr information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

I bought my car new in 2009 and i only have now just a little over 40,000 miles. i am a single mom and my car is used for driving my [xxx] year old son to and from day care and myself to and from work. on february 3rd i noticed my steering wheel felt funny like something was loose, i didn't think anything of it until my traction light then suddenly started to go on and off in the morning on my way to work. by the time i pulled into work the power steering had gone completely out. i then pulled onto a side street in fear of getting into an accident, i'm small and weigh no more than 115 lbs, so it was extremely rough and scary to me. i stopped the car and shut it off after looking up on my phone about similar problems people have been having. i shut it off waited a few minutes then it was fine, until i put the car in drive then it went out again. i did this a few times in order to make it to work. by lunch time my car was running fine but still felt funny for the next 4 days. friday 2/7/14 my cars power steering had gone out for good and the turning it on and off didn't help, i ended up paying $840 dollars to get the entire column replaced.that was out of pocket because of course this was not covered under the manufactures warranty or the pt warranty. a month later i heard about the recall, so i called the dealership, they heard nothing so i called gm, my vin wasn't listed. i have called back several times since and check the "owner" section on gm's website and still nothing, and all they keep telling me is that only some were recalled and mine might not be apart of it even though after reading the recall, that is exactly what happened to my vehicle. *tr parts of this document have been redacted to protect personally identifiable information pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

Within a week of owning car error code p0011 camshaft alignment?came up. dealer got light to go off. said nothing was wrong with car. electrical problems with power locks also, now my complete steering column is gone.5 error codes c0545/c0561, non functioning electric power steering. i am lucky that i didn't die in this car or worse kill someone. i can't believe there is no recall on this car. plenty of complaints online. are we waiting for people to die???? seriously. my car is at the dealership today and gm district specialist is dealing with the customer experience department at the dealership to see what they can do. i think this will be the last chevrolet that i ever purchase. unsafe. i hope people know how to complain on here because there are a lot of complaints online. 2008 was recalled for same issues. maybe they used some of their old parts in my car from 2008. *tr

Steering wheel shaking, unable to turn. *tr

Over last summer i had a hose go. not a big deal. only a $200 dollar repair. last week is when the rest of the power steering failed. my power steering pump blew when i was trying to leave work. i attempted to move the car but i could barely steer, so i had to get a tow. when i brought it to the shop, a new pump was installed. 15 minutes later that pump blew out. when this first pump blew it sucked metal into the power steering gear which then needed to be replaced. this repair cost me $900. i think there should be a recall. i see lots of complaints about this issue and if it were to happen while i was driving i could have been killed. *tr

Exiting an off ramp at aprx. 15-20 miles per hour, my power steering went. i pulled off the side of the road and turned the car off to call my husband. power steering back on. drove to my destination. on the way hone, it went again. this happened several other times throughout the month. took it to the dealer who replaced the power steering. other malibus have been recalled for this purpose, but not mine. *tr

In january of 2014, i experienced two separate instances of the electrical power assist steering failing suddenly in my 2009 malibu. fortunately i was traveling at low speeds in a residential area both times and was able to control the car. the problem would not correct until i stopped the car, turned it off and restarted it. when general motors acknowledged a problem with power assist steering in 2008-2009 malibus in march of 2014, i reported the problem to general motors' customer service. i expected that the recall would include my vehicle. i have been informed by general motors that my vehicle is not included in the recall. i find it troubling that if i experienced two instance of the loss of power steering and reported it to gm, that my car would be included in the recall. i'm writing to advise of my experiences so you can include my 2009 malibu in the scope of the recall. *tr

While driving (exiting freeway) the electronic power steering failed making it difficult to control the vehicle. (no report filed at the time, but a couple months later heard that gm was recalling '09 malibus for power steering failures. upon contacting gm this week to find out why i have not been notified of the recall, i have found that my vehicle is not affected by the recall and decided to report the failure in case it is a pattern of failures beyond the initial recall scope.) *tr

On sunday, november 3, 2013, the warning light came on warning me that we had no power steering for the first time. on monday, november 4, 2013, we again received the message that we had no power steering. and we did not have power steering. you had to turn the ignition off and restart numerous times for the warning light not to come on. on tuesday, november 5, 2013, my intent was to make an appointment to have the malibu checked out, when my wife called on her way to work and said that she had trouble starting the malibu without the power steering warning, that something was wrong with the steering as she was driving, and we should exchange vehicles at a local repair shop. they looked at the error code (dtc c0545), printed me a copy of the technical bulletin (09-02-36-001), and recommended that i take the malibu to a dealer. it took five starts before the malibu would start on their parking lot before the power steering warning went off. as i drove to the dealer the car was drivable, but there was definitely something wrong with the steering. when i arrived at the dealer, i placed the transmission in park and set the emergency brake; when i took my hands off the steering wheel to turn off the ignition, the steering wheel was going left and right on its own ? i can?t emphasize this enough. i have never witnessed (or have even heard of) a car?s steering wheel performing in this manner before. in addressing the situation with the technician writing up my problem, we discussed payment and warranty and he said he would call gm and call me back. he called me back later and said that gm would pay half the repair and that my cost eventually worked out to $497.66. *tr

At freeway speed the car wants to pull to left when turning the wheel to the right. steering wheel makes a clunking noise when turning left or right. hard to steer when moving slowly. loose sloppy steering feel. the dealer is replacing the entire steering gear rack. very costly. *tr

I have a 2009 malibu, a little over 73000 miles. 7/21/2013 while in park the steering wheel started shaking and pulsing. i turned the car off and restarted it and it stopped. i got on the interstate and the steering wheel started shaking and pulsing and shifting. i have to keep 2 hands on the wheel as not to be shifted from lanes. i take the car wednesday to a gm dealership. they told me it wasn't calibrated after an alignment, and they calibrated it done and alignment and rotated the tires. i pay $220 for this service and leave. i get home with no problems. very next morning thursday, i start my car and it starts the same thing all over again. it shakes and pulses all the way to the dealership while shifting me in lanes. after waiting for around an hour and a half, i am told the electrical power steering motor is out and it is nearly $700. this is $920 for a motor in a 4 year old vehicle with 73000 miles. this vehicle is not safe considering if you do not have 2 hands on the vehicle and paying very close attention you may end up in up in the lane beside you. i have researched this online and found 100s of complaints concerning this same problem. i am amazed this has not been recalled. i am very disappointed with gm. *tr

My car was under bumper to bumper warranty when the steering gear was replaced. now the same part is going bad again for the second time. today's date 7-10-2013. *tr

I was driving and the power steering started to shake and the light came on. hard difficulty driving. i contacted my local dealer who says there are lots of complaints on this issue but no recall. i looked online to find hundreds if complaints. i contacted gm to make complaint and see why not recalled. they told me gm doesn't recall vehicles the highway dept does. pretty awful they are willing to jeopardize my life but not fix my car. very unhappy with gm this has to be a recall now !! *tr

We reported last year to gm that we were without power steering, instead of fixing our car the argued with us that there hasn't been a recall on the power steering. now we are having problems with the tracking. and the transmission has been slipping since last summer. *tr

Erratic steering while trying to park. chimes were head, message came across speedo, major clunk also started at same time. sounds like right front. another electric power steering failure from a car barely broken in, from gm. when will they take responsibility for substandard parts they import for american cars? *tr

The power steering goes inop. at times. the power steering light comes on and vehicle is very difficult to steer. when you turn the vehicle off and then back on it resets the system and everything goes back to normal. took it to dealership to be diagnosed and said steering column needs to be replaced and had the repair done. *tr

Malibu has had a couple of different problems. while driving the electrical panel including warning lights would flicker on and off along with the vehicle losing power. multiple times the vehicle was taken to a local dealership who ultimately told me a grounding wire had some problems and they fixed the issue. the vast majority of the problems were solved with that fix. since then the vehicle has had issues with the steering. while driving the steering wheel will move itself back and forth. the problem is not all the time, and very random. this usually happens within the first few minutes after the start of the vehicle. when moving the steering wheel will wobble back and forth even with both hands on the wheel.

Tl* the contact owns a 2009 chevrolet malibu. the contact stated that the steering wheel became extremely tight without warning and the esc warning light remained illuminated. the dealer was notified of the failure and indicated that the vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign numbers: 14e044000 (steering) and 14v153000 (steering). the vehicle was taken to a repair shop for further inspection. the vehicle was included in nhtsa campaign numbers: 14v252000 (electrical system, electronic stability control, exterior lighting, service brakes, hydraulic, vehicle speed control) and 12v460000 (power train). the dealer was to schedule both recall repair appointments. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 175,000. parts distribution disconnect. updated 04/06/16*lj *js

The steering on this model and make of car is all messed up. it is the same problem that so many other have complained about on this site. the steering "freaks out" and pulls one way and then goes to the other. it's beyond dangerous. even when the car is stopped at a stop light, if you take your hands off the wheel, the steering wheel jerks violently back and forth. sometimes its works fine and then out of now where, it goes crazy and pulls you to one side or the other and then you have to turn the wheel toe opposite way to keep it going straight. i see tons of other gm recalls and even on this year and model, but gm says that my particular car is not covered right now. the danger of this defect is so high that if they think they have problems with lawsuits over ignition switches, the amount of money that they will pay when these steering lawsuits start to come in will put gm back into bankruptcy. the danger of this defect is off the charts. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2009 chevrolet malibu. the contact stated that while at a stop, the steering wheel seized and a unknown warning light illuminated. th vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the contact stated that the vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 14v153000 (steering). the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. updated 08/11/14*lj

Power steering - when turning the steering wheel, you feel non-smooth condition, unusual humming or moaning noise. some power steering fluid had to be replaced but no noticeable leak is evident. had private auto mechanic look into problem and he advised to let dealer take care of it because they have the computerized equipment to make appropriate repairs. auto mechanic stated that he has experienced similar complaints about the chevy malibu. chevy dealer checked problem and advised us to wait for problem no "worsen" because any diagnostic work will cost us "a lot of money" wondering if nhtsa has similar complaints on file because i'm concerned about any safety issue? *js

Backing out of a parking spot power steering gave out. service esc light came on. power steering message lit. pulled into parking spot shut car off. started car seconds later - no warning lights on and power steering was back but did not feel right. turned wheel while parked and esc and power steering warning lights illuminated. tried again, same thing. had to drive 2 miles to home with no power steering. outside temperature was 34 degrees at the time. *tr

Wheels wobbling when i bought the certified vehicle, took it back to dealer. they replaced front tires and aligned vehicle. also steering wheel does not lock into place when put in park and key removed from ignition. constant steering correction at any speed. wheel dances back and forth and feels bouncy. dealer stated that there is no problem with the steering wheel. returned to dealer on feb. 23 2012. they replaced front tires again. test drove car and stated the car was fixed. car still wonders, wheels still wobble..still play in steering wheel. spoke with gm rep. explained issue. gm rep. also spoke with dealer mechanic. dealer mechanic advised gm rep. that car wheels and steering was fixed. incorrect. dealer did not address steering wheel. only replaced tires. issue still exists. easy to lose control. feels like it has bad wheel bearings or busted hub. but dealer mechanics says its okay. *tr
