As i was drivingdown the street, the power steering/service esc light and message came on my car. it also said esc off. i got pulled into a parkuing lot and turned off my car and restarted it and it worked for a few minutes. after work it did it to me when i started it. i killed it and restarted it and jerked the steering wheel back and forth and it worked for around five minutes. i have read on many forums that this is a known problem with many years of the malibu and other cars. gm has extended the warranty to 100,000 miles but most of them are over that limit. this is a dangerous problem!!!!!

I was driving this morning and a "power steering" message appeared on my dash. for now, i didn't feel any difference in steering, but to be honest, it's been always a bit hard to turn the steering wheel. it is getting colder in my state and i am worried for myself and my family to drive this car. i called my local gm dealership and they said i am not covered, however if i bring my car, they might cover some expenses. i only have 86.000 miles on my car and i don't see why it shouldn't be fully covered because it seems to be a number one issue in malibu cars.

Power steering msg comes on intermittently. took in for repair and steering torque sensor needs replaced. this is listed for other malibu years but not 2009 as (nhtsa campaign id number: 14v153000). the repair cost 576.09. the vehicle is not listed under current recall but suffered the same problem. problem occurs while driving and is a known safety issue affecting other model years.

When starting car information center issues warning eps then check power steering and the steering wheel in very difficult to turn. if the car is shut off and restarted 2-3 times it will be ok. this has happened several times over the past 5 months.

Tonight i went to start my car up turned the heater on then went back inside came out and was steering itself back and forth turned it on and off again it stopped backed up and pulled forward started doing it again and then it started turning really hard from left to right by itself

I was driving and heard a beeping noise. power steering flashed on dash. i parked car waited some time. proceeded to drive and continue to beep/flash until next destination, same issue 10 minutes later. i checked online to verify recall, shows a few, reached out to dealer and was informed that this has expired or no open recalls and no way to verify if this was fixed.

The power steering suddenly stops working , it is very difficult to turn. gm has issued a recall on march 31, 2014. but the dealer refuses to honor the recall, it insisted gm has excluded certain vehicles of 2009 malibu. this is the recall number: nhtsa campaign number: 14v153000 . in nhtsa published information it says it includes all 2009 malibu.

Takata recall; steering column is loose(stationary, motion). wheel bearings are bad. i took the car to a chevrolet dealer(clemson rd.). they were not able to find an issue. everytime i maintenanceperformed i am advised to have the ;steeting column check, rattling and loose, maybe a piece of plastic?). my second trip to the chevrolet dealer did not allow enough time for a diagnostic. i purchased the car used from united auto sales. the wheel bearings(motion) were bad when i purchased and the dealer (united car autosales). i replaced the wheel bearings once already and have to replace again. the car is making a clapping noise and speed is impeded.

While driving on the interstate my steering wheel began to shake and vibrate rapidly. i then heard a ding followed by the messages, "service power steering" "service esc" " esc off". i was able to exit the interstate and get to a gas station before the wheel completely locked up. i turned the car off for about 45 mins and found that when i turned my car on it was "fine." i ended up having it towed. i found out that this is a common issue with this car and my car isn't a part of last year's recall.

Upon turning on my vehicle in my driveway, i got the ringing noise and a message flashing telling me i need to service the power steering. my wheel was in a locked position and i was not able to take the car out of the driveway. i shut if off, waited about an hour and started the car again...1 minute passed and it happened again. after about 3 times of this happening it stopped for a few days and now here i am dealing with the same thing once again. i was told that i will be responsible for the charges to fix it since my vin is not included in the recall. researching online for the power steering problem i have come across hundreds of people experiencing the exact same problem with no help from the manufacturer. now i am afraid to drive my car anywhere for fear of it locking up on me. this is a very serious issue that needs to be looked into before a tragedy happens.

I was driving on the thruway with my 2 kids both 10 years old at 65 mph. and the electronic assisted steering cut out and the service steering message was displayed. thankfully i was able to pull off to the side of the road and shut the car off. when i restarted the car the steering was normal for about 15 miles then it cut out again. i had my ex husband who is a certified toyota technician check the car. he found a code for the steering c0545. this code and problem is a common problem with this car line as general motors issued a safety recall (recall 14116b) also your organization issued a safety campaign ( ntsa campaign # 14v153000) when this was discovered we called keller chevrolet in buffalo ny to have them double check the issue and payed their diagnostic fee, they concurred with my ex husbands diagnosis and ran the vin for coverage under the recalls for this failure they advised us our car is not covered under these safety recalls and we would have to pay over $1000.00 to have it repaired. now i would like to know who would be responsible if god forbid we lost control of the car when this failure occurred and someone was injured or killed? how is it that the same year make and model car can be covered for this failure and our car that has the same symptoms and failure is not? is it asking to much for gm to fix a known safety defect? with all the bad press gm has had over the last couple years beginning with taking my tax dollars to keep their company afloat? i'm asking for your backing in getting this safety defect covered under these recalls.

The power steering jerks on a hard turn either direction and makes a growling sound. the operation smooths out in the straight forward position.

When driving the power steering went out. this has happened 4 times in the past year.

One day, i found out through a random person that there are recalls on the car. i had been having trouble out of the steering wheel shaking a lot while driving, as if it wasn't connected to the wheels. i will cause me to lose control a little bit and swerve. then after it shakes a lot, the power steering light would pop on on the dashboard. so i took the car back to the dealer to be fixed. they said they fixed it, but it was still shaking. once i got it home, it stop working, would not start up. so i had them to send a tow to pick it up. after checking it, i was told it was the electrical system and i had to pay for that. i mention to them that the steering was still shaking also. they said they would check it again. after i was told it was fixed, i went and picked it up. as soon as i drove away, the steering was still shaking. i did not want to take it back because they were charging me everytime they had to do a diagnosis on the car. the steering is still shaking and bad, after two checks. it causes me to swerve while driving and i never know when it might happen. i can't teach my daughter how to drive because i never know when it may shake. after two fixes and it still shakes, i feel like this can't be fixed by the parts they are required to put on the car to stop it.

Power steering warning light activated then lost of steering while in process of turning right from a stop. had service repair done and torque sensor was replaced. *tr

On 4/13/2015 - 3/5/2015 my 2009 malibu is experiencing a steering issue. my dashboard displayed a signal, power steering / service esc. after shutting the car off and restarting it it was fine. the dealer told me there was a recall for this problem but, not for my vin # they said for a $ 99.00 diagnostic fee they would look into it. since then it has become more frequent almost daily even "while driving " it will go out. all year vehicles involved should be covered under this recall not just certain vin # please check into the severity of this issue before someone gets killed because of this known about problem.

Started car up and message center flashes power steering, service esc. i get codes u2143, c0561 on scanner . total loss of steering assist. this car is not part of recall on steering problem but it should be! *tr

On sunday, march 29th, a "power steering" and a "service escape" message appeared on the dashboard. so, i trying to turn the car but, it was very very hard to do so. this was so scary . i took my car to the chevrolet dealership. i was told that i would have to pay $110 diagnostic charge and for the repair. i was very upset because i found out that there was a recall on this same type of problem with other models on chevy malibu. there's nothing that i could have done to have this problem. i called gm headquarter and i was informed that i would have to pay for the repair. i don't believe that this decision is fair. i was told that my car was not a part of the recall but, how could the same problem happen . i'm very disappointed in the dealership and gm headquarter. *tr

I went to start my car and the service esc light flashed along with the power steering light. i turned the ignition off and back on again. this seemed to solve the problem temporarily. as a few days went by, the problem was more frequent. currently, the vehicle will start with the error lights flashing more times than it will not. the vehicle can be driven. however, it is very difficuly to turn, especially at slow speeds. *tr

In past few weeks my veh. power steering failed, and showed a code of problems with the electronic power steering system. having taken it to chevrolet to be repaired i found that many other vehs have been recalled for "electronic power steering problems". my year veh. apparently has not been included in the current recall order. having been advised by chevrolet that this issue is a steering wheel position sensor, i believe that this proves that chevrolet has not corrected the steering issues in their vehicles. i believe nhtsa should continue to carefully review chevrolets manufacturing operations of this steering system, and force them to expand the recall to rectify whatever issues are found, before this occurs to someone else and a serious injury or death occurs. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2009 chevrolet malibu. the contact stated that while driving at 15 mph, the steering wheel seized and the power steering warning light illuminated. the failure recurred twice. the vehicle was taken to the dealer. the technician diagnosed that the steering sensor needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 102,000.

I was driving just a few blocks from my house when i stopped at a red light. the light turned green so i went to go. my car then flashed a service esc warning, then it flashed esc off & then flashed engine power reduced. my check engine light also came on and has stayed on. my car wouldn't even go over 10mph, and was shaking so bad i thought i was going to lose control of the vehicle. thank god i didn't make it out of town. i just recently had my car at the chevrolet auto shop to have my transmission completely rebuilt and for the brake light malfunction recall. then my car ended up back in the shop apparently for a bad cadillac converter, which i think really was this problem all along. i have only had this car for a year, and i am beyond disgusted with all the problems. i don't think i will be purchasing another vehicle from chevrolet, as they just aren't good cars apparently. side note: i take really good care of my vehicle and do all the normal service maint. on time etc so there is no excuse for this. it's just a bad car! i have a 2009 chevy malibu. *tr

While driving into a parking lot my power steering suddenly quit working and the service esc and power steering lights started flashing. i looked up my vin to see if it qualified for a recall but it didn't fit under recall #14v153000 even though my car was built the same year and same model and is experiencing the same issues as described in this recall. this recall needs to be expanded to include more vehicle experiencing the same problem. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2009 chevrolet malibu. the contact stated that the power steering failed. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the vin was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 14v153000 (steering). the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 82,000....updated 05-26-15*bf updated 7/6/2015*js

While driving the vehicle an audible alarm sounded and a message appeared in the driver information console indicating a loss of power steering. the steering was barely functional and could have resulted in a crash if my spouse or children had been driving the vehicle. this condition occurred off and on for about a week before i could have it serviced at the local dealership. upon a search of the internet for recalls, i noticed that my make, model, and certain vehicles manufactured the same year were part of a recall for the exact same problem that i had repaired - a faulty torque sensor in the power steering unit. my dealership informed me that my vehicle was not included in the safety recall. a call to the chevrolet customer assistance center on 4-17-2015 was unsatisfactory. chevrolet declined to reimburse me for repairs to my vehicle for the same issue that other malibus, produced in the same year, were covered by a recall. i request the nhtsb extend the recall on the power steering failure to all 2009 chevrolet malibu vehicles. i have read in online forums that many other owners are facing the same issue, and many are not having repairs made due to cost. this is indeed creating an unsafe condition to the owners and the motoring public. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2009 chevrolet malibu. while the vehicle was in park, the steering wheel moved independently in both directions. in addition, while driving at 35 mph, the steering wheel became difficult to turn. the contact had to apply force to the steering wheel in order to turn the vehicle. a "power steering" message was displayed across the instrument panel. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the failure recurred on numerous occasions. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 129,640.

Power steering shut off while driving. almost lost control on the highway. saw that their were recall for other gm vehicles suffering from same problem. i was told that my vehicle was not on recall. *tr

Driving down the highway around 60 mph when the power steering on my '09 malibu froze. an esc notification came on and then one for power steering. managed to get my car off to the side of the road where i turned my car off and then on again to reset. this happened 6 more times on my 10 mile commute home. this had happen a few times before but very intermittently. after researching this issue on-line i learned that gm is aware of this problem and issued a recall notice last year but does not include my vin (confirmed with dealer). because my vin is not covered this will be an out of pocket expense for me though as others have said, is the same problem. the dealer said that the issue with my car may not be the same as the ones in the recall notice but will not know until i bring it in. there may be a possibility that my vin will be included in a subsequent recall notice and if it is i can be reimbursed for the expense. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2009 chevrolet malibu. the contact stated that while driving at 40 mph, the steering wheel was difficult to maneuver. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who diagnosed that the power steering power assist system needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 111,000.

Driving home from work, the esc light came on then the wheel moved left to right like it was driving it self. i pulled over shut the car off and looked to see if i had a flat tire, which i did not. i started the car back up and went to drive away and i had no power steering. i did call gm service 1-800-222-1020 and was told they will provide a free 1 hour diagnostics, then i would have to call back with my ref# to talk about my options now there are other cars effected and under recall i think they need to extend the recall. i hope they resolve this problem... not at my cost *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2009 chevrolet malibu. the contact stated while driving approximately 65 mph, there was a sudden loss of power steering and the warning light illuminated. the steering wheel became extremely difficult to turn even with force being applied. the vehicle was taken to the dealer, who informed that the steering torque sensor would need to be replaced. the vehicle was currently being repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the issue. the approximate failure mileage was 125,000. updated 4/20/15*cn
