2004 nissan maxima the transmission in my car is slipping it's shifting hard between 2 & 3 gear and this started after 60,000 the interior is falling down from the top of the ceiling. the doors up front don't unlock with the key fob. the interior light broke off. this is the worse car i have ever owned... *tr

2004 nissan maxima all features had locked up. consumer tried to fix the problem, when trying the car jumped out of park and rolled down the driveway hitting a taurus and a trailer. airbags did not deploy. *kb ***nar*** the consumer was injured and as the vehicle was rolling down the driveway a family member, which the vehicle nearly missed fell backwards and broke her wrist. the consumer stated there was no reason for the gear shift to lock or for the vehicle to jump and roll. the vehicle had been placed in park and the parking brake had been pulled prior to the incident. *jb

In 2005 i purchased a 2004 nissan maxima. at around 60k miles the transmission started acting up. everytime i reverse and put the car into drive there is a delay and the car all of a sudden jerks into drive. the car also jerks/slips into gears as you accelerate and when you apply the brakes. nothing has worked to fix this problem. there are hundreds of complaints regarding this same issue all over the internet. please help, this is no way that this is simply coincidence that every maxima is having the same issue. *tr

Transmission problems jerks all the time from 1st to 2nd and from 2nd to 1st very hard and the struts sound horribly. they both have been changed the trans. and the struts and they are doing the same thing again. *tr

My 2004 maxima jerks to an extreme when it has been driven for longer than 15 minutes. its excessivly jerks gears and jerks to a stop when i lightly tap the brakes. this is dangerous as well as ridiculous! *tr

I have a 2004 nissan maxima 3.5 sl that i purchased brand new in sept 2004. started having problems with the transmission at 40,000 miles and had to replace the transmission under warranty at 42,000 miles. we are at almost 80,000 miles and i have been having problems with the transmission for over 20,000 miles now. jerks hard shifting between 1st and 2nd gear. jerks hard when braking and sometimes i even feel as if someone rear-ended me from the loud bang i feel. love this car, but the transmission problem is on going. taking it to the dealer next week to see what can be done. this car definitely needs a recall for its transmission. *tr

2004 nissan maxima. i notice the transmission was slipping when changing gears. it also was jerking repeatedly while changing into 1st and 2nd gear and then back down from 2nd to 1st. i was told by a nissan service advisor that my car needed a transmission flush. i had the flush done on the car, problems still exist. nissan now says i need a new transmission. i traded the car in for another maxima. thinking it was something just with the 2004 model. i now have the same issue with my 2006 maxima. there are thousands of people with this same problem. this transmission should be recalled, before someone get hurt and nissan stop stealing people hard earned money. when they know something is wrong with the car. *tr

Good morning, i currently own 2004 maxima & have been experiencing major problems with this car for about 2-3 years. my major problem at first was my transmission. apparently the dealership states i will need a new transmission which is absurd since the car is not even 10 yrs old. i knew there was a problem when the car started jerking on its own. at times it jerks real hard when shifting from 1st to 2nd and it is quite scary & embarrassing. when the problem started, i have two friends who were owners of a nissan maxima as well and they were experiencing the same jerking transmission problems. they eventually traded their cars but i not wanted to go through the whole process of financing a car, i figured i'll fix the problem. the transmission is one problem but why every couple of months there is other problems as well. for example i last year i had to change my catalytic converter, my mounts, and my routers. now what has made me at my ends with this car is what happened last month (june 2009). while driving, there was a loud sound, i opened the hood of the car and right buy the engine, and there were flames. the fire dept was called along with the police. as i submit my complaint now my car is still at the shop. this has become a frustrated and very expensive issue that i have been facing. honestly i have spent about 5k's or more on this car, not considering that i'm still financing as well. how is it that, i have done my research and there are many others out there who have the same issue. nissan needs to take full responsibility and it is not a coincidence also. i have documents and emails from others who are also experiencing the same issue (over 300 complaints since 2006). pls if anything, there needs to be an investigation, many ppl are suffering and losing $ as well. *tr

I have a 2004 nissan maxima. it has 97.000 miles on it and the transmission has been giving me problems since i bought it. it won't go into drive from park without a 3-5 second delay, it dosen't down shift properly when coming to a stop. it's to the point now that when i come to a stop it down shifts so erraticly that the tires chirp. i looked online and there are over 150,000 people with the same complaint. i took it to the dealer and they said they can't duplicate it, which i think is a falsehood. the bottom line is that there clearly is a defect with these transmissions and nissan needs to recall them. the fog lights short out and burn out after limited use. i have spend hundreds of dollars on fog lights, now i just gave up and leave them burned out. the front struts were defective and had to be replaced. *tr

Transmission for 2004 nissan maxima is slipping and not operating correctly. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2004 nissan maxima. while driving at various speeds, the transmission slips and jerks the vehicle forward. the vehicle has been taken to a dealer and they changed the transmission fluid; however, the failure still persists. the current mileage was 97,261 and approximate failure mileage was 50,000.

May 4, 2006 i was traveling on west academy/green st. northbound. the clutch had just been replaced for the second time and it malfunctioned again. (it literally sucks to the floorboard with no play to disengage to neutral, this had happened to my husband twice prior, i panicked didn't see the red light or stopped traffic and slammed into the car stopped in front of me at an estimated speed on 40 mph never hitting the brakes. the damage to the car was severe with an insurance pay out just shy of $10,000.00 dollars. the damage was only to the front of the car, no airbags deployed (there are eight airbags in the front passenger compartment) i was restrained by the seat belt. it was not enough for me not to be injured, i hit the steering wheel and gear shift causing severe bruising to my arms, legs, chest and a bump on the head. *jb

Transmission on 2004 nissan maxima se jerks violently when shifting from 1st gear to 2nd gear, and from 1st gear to 2nd gear. it also shifts very violently, sporadically, when shifting from park to drive. i have taken the car to the dealership and they informed me that a transmission flush was needed. however, after performing the flush, the problem still persists. after returning for another diagnostic test on the car, the dealership informed me that i would need a new, rebuilt transmission. this is very frustrating because nissans have always been known for quality and never needed the amount of major repair services that i've began to experience with relatively low mileage, 110k. *tr

The clutch in the consumer's 2004 nissan maxima went to the floor. *nm the vehicle's clutch went to the floor which did not allow the consumer to shift gear and resulted in the vehicle slowing down to a stop. the consumer could force the transmission into the next gear but worried about the damage to the gears. the vehicle was taken to the dealer but they were unable to find anything wrong. the problem occurred each day the vehicle was driven. *nm

I have a 2004 nissan maxima se and for the past 4 years i have had nothing but problems. first the ac vent inside of the car broke going inward. then the ac sensory went out while i was driving on a busy street and almost was hit from behind. then the transmission started slipping . when i tried to accelerate it would jerk and know it is having a problem down shifting. this is the worst car ever. *tr

Transmission failure. i have had this car since 2004 bought it with 10000 miles on it used from a dealer. since then i have had to replace my transmission at 52000 miles and have had the car in many shops including nissan for the past two years trying to figure out what is wrong with this transmission. i am one of many owners who have this issue. the transmission shifts late from 2nd to 3rd and early from 3rd to 4th causing a large jolt in the car on the freeway and in the city. causing a whiplash to me and my wife and kids. this is unacceptable in my eyes and a drain on my wallet to find this ghost problem. nissan knows there is a problem and have offered to pay 15% of my cost of repairs to whatever is wrong. they know there is a defect but can not fix it due to not knowing the exact cause. they have told me this multiple times. they will not buy back my car due to mileage and whatnot. i have had this current transmission valvebody overhauled and the electronics diagnosed and everything possible done. i have put nearly 1500 dollars in diagnostic and "this might fix it" repairs. this transmission is the 5speed automatic only offered from 2004-2007. they switched to the cvt transmissions because of this. i am writing you in concern for my families safety, and everyone around me driving. the first transmission shifted the same way before it failed on me. luckily i was driving 20mph when it slammed into 5th gear and i was alone. it felt like i hit a brick wall and then started costing. please help me and everyone resolve this matter by opening a defect investigation. i am a member of an online forum called www.maxima.org . here is a link to one of many pages talking about the failures. thank you for listening will be tracking the progress on this. http://forums.maxima.org/6th-generation-maxima-2004-2008/546174-6th-gens-transmission think if everyone who owned this car could get online and vote. *tr

2004 nissan maxima has a transmission problem. it slips, jerk, and stalls sometimes. *tr

(1) over the past three years, i have documented a maintenance issue that i have been having with my 2004 nissan maxima se. i originally explained to nissan consumer affairs that my transmission was malfunctioning. (2) the clutch pedal would randomly and intermittently loose pressure/resistance while i was operating the vehicle. (3) i took the vehicle in for diagnosis and repair, at which the dealership was not able to duplicate the symptom i was experiencing (because it is random and intermittent). however, they were not driving it under the conditions that i was driving. they would test drive it for a few miles and conclude there was nothing wrong. i find a discrepancy in this methodology, because some symptoms may only occur after prolonged continuous use (which is apparently the case for my vehicle). on one occassion, i was not able to operate the vehicle, and was stranded in a middle lane of i-75. this is a safety issue because the resulting inoperability of the vehicle while in traffic poses an immediate threat for rear-end and possibly other types of crashes. i also travel with my two kids (ages 6 and 5) quite regularly, and i can no longer put them at risk.

I have a 2004 nissan maxima at 66,000 miles. at 34,000 miles, i had a transmission problem with a mild slipping and hard shift and when i took it in, the dealership said that there was nothing wrong. thinking this had something to do with their "new advertised" shift 2.0 feature, i continued to use it. as time we on, this problem became worse and worse and now when i take it into nissan, they say now it is a problem with an "internal failure" and too bad, pay them $3,800. when i challenged this issue and provided proof that i have serviced my entire car including the transmission properly, nissan rep told me that "nissan would consider my issue if i was a more loyal customer to them and had my service done with them". i couldn't believe my ears. if i didn't pay triple the charge amounts for the same service through them, they would consider my "internal failure" in my transmission as a problem of theirs. i couldn't and still can't believe this was said to me. their are a quite a few noted failures of this transmission listed on a web-site on the internet. these can be very dangerous if you are driving and your car want shift gears while your crossing into an intersection. you need to assist in this issue. *tr

2004 maxima has had timing chain noise for years has been blowing oil for 2 years now transmission is banging and shifting very hard losing power etc. for 3 months now had trans flushed did not help at all tires were defective in the first year a/c has not worked for 2 years this car is very much a lemon. *tr

2004 and newer nissan maximas has a serious steering wheel vibration after 40mph. nissan dealership says they are no complaints, but the internet if full of customers having this same problem. my car is 6years old but only has 34,000 miles. new tires, brakes, rotors, alignment multiply tire balances has not fixed this problem. on the internet customer have replaced struts, bearing,cv axles and problem still exist. this seems like a problem needs to be addressed. *tr

Tl* the contact owns 2004 nissan maxima. the contact stated when driving from 20-30 mph, the transmission would slip and cause the vehicle to jerk excessively. the vehicle would independently shift into the next gear, disengage and then re-engage. the contact stated the failure would occur every time the vehicle was operated. the failure would occur mostly when accelerating from a stop. the dealer performed a diagnostic test which determined that the central computer would need to be readjusted. the failure persisted and progressively became worse. there were no further repairs made to the vehicle. the manufacturer was not contacted. the failure mileage was 30,000 and the current mileage is 125,745. updated 10/29/10*jb

Problem with transmission started soon after i purchased car, i would say in the first year i had it which was in 2003, although it is a 2004. i took it in more than once when the transmission started causing trouble. it would act (and still does to this day) as if it had/has been knocked out of gear, rpm goes up and then the transmission picks back up. when that happens it will jerk really hard and take off. as i said, i took it to my nissan dealer and each time was told they did not find any thing wrong with it. this is my 5th maxima, and have to say it is my last. the son of a woman i used to work with had the same problem with his 2004 maxima, which he bought used. he traded it for something else. my car is still going, although the problem does not seem to be happening more often, but does seem to be more severe when it does happen.

Shimmy in the steering wheel, axle replacement three times and new tires replaced all within 90 days. the tires are probably to big and wide for this car. *nm

I've been having problems with my 04 nissan maxima...from door locking system to now transmission jerking and skipping. i just bought this car in feb 08 and i cant believe how many complaints on the transmission problems. please take a look at the complaints because their should be a recall for this. *tr

I have a 2004 nissan maxima se with a bucking slipping transmission problem. i have read 100's of complaints about the same issue with the same make/model/yr as my car. i also called nissan and they basically told me to take a hike. *tr

My nissan maxima transmission is gone and a lot of 04 maxima's which is my year is having the same problem and nissan doesn't care. *jb

I own a 2004 nissan maxima and the transmission seem to have always been an issue. now the transmission is completely dead. i have it serviced at a nissan dealer often (most recent 3 months back) and everything seem to be good. i had complained about the issue to the dealership and they couldn't pin point the issue. *tr

I have had problems with my 2004 nissan maxima since purchasing it brand new. within 60 days of purchasing the car, i had to take it back to the dealership due to a malfunction with the brakes. i have spent over $1,500 since keeping the brakes and rotors repaired. i am on my fourth set of tires and have had three alignments and my front end inspected. i have had to replace an engine mount. in 2006 my air conditioner went out and i spent over $500 having that repaired. now i am in need of a new transmission because there is internal damage due to the clutch slipping even though it is an automatic car. i have two friends with the same model/year car and they have experienced similar or the same problems. once of my friends just replaced his transmission in his 2004 maxima. this car has cost me at least $5,000 in repairs since i have purchased it and i have never ever received a recall notice on anything. i know that nissan is well aware of the defects in the 2004 maxima, but are not owning up to their responsibility in taking care of all of the problems that i have read about and talked about with different 2004 maxima owners. i have also had the battery replaced twice. the body style of the car is beautiful, but the car itself is a piece of crap due to poor mechanics. *tr

Ok now this is ridiculous. i am in ga and i to own a 2004 nissan maxima and i'm having transmission slipping issues. mainly from 2nd to 3rd but sometimes from 1st to 2nd as well as some jerking problems. *tr

My nissan maxima started having problems in transmission that i have noticed many others have had very hard jerks when car gets warm i have went to the nissan dealership on numerous accounts and they have admitted to having number of problems with this model transmission but they said no recall has ever been made. please find out what's going on with these cars. *tr

I own a 2004 nissan maxima se w/ a little bit over 50000 miles. the transmission does "jerk" when the engine is warm when changing from 1st. to second gear and when downshifting between the same gears. i tough that was aa isolated problem, till finding a few web site w/ owners of the same vehicle ( 003/2004 models) complaining about the same problem. the dealership told me to change the motor mount and i did as well as flushing the fluid and nothing did happen. is my reasoning that the nhtsa should look into this matter since it shows a pattern and also is unknown what can happens w/ the car in case of a complete failure. below there is a question about the "incident date" my response is "approximated". *tr

2004 nissan maxima sl- design defect in shift knob attaching mechanism makes knob very loose and likely to come off in hand. this also exposes a somewhat pointed metal shifting shaft to dirver and occupants. my shift knob came off in my hand while driving. *ak
