O4 nissan maxima. this car has a defective transmission that nissan knows about. my wife stalled in the middle of a busy highway from the problem. there are thousands of posts about this transmission and nissan will not do anything about it. *tr
My 2004 nissan maxima has a safety issue. the car's transmission slips and gives a sever bucking or jerking when shifting gears. this usually happens when slowing to go around corners or in stop and go traffic. i am the 2nd owner. the first owner maintained his vehicle at sutherland nissan where he purchased the car new. the dealer, who sold me the car too, initially said the car is in excellent shape and they checked it out stating it only needed an oil change -which i did. two months later, after telling the dealership that my transmission is jerking and bucking, they said i needed to change the transmission fluid and replace the motor mounts -which i did. they said it would fix the jerking problem but it didn't. now they state that i need a new transmission. i am afraid that someone is going to slam into me from the back because after the car jerks it is impossible to pick speed back up. please consider a recall on this transmission. i have read hundreds of complaints with this same transmission problem and nissan will not help nor admit that there is a design flaw with the 2004 nissan maxima transmission. thanks so much! *tr
Tranmission skipped @ 65,518 wich i was told was out of the powertrain warranty paid $4,000.00 on 12/08/08 for what i thought was a new tranmission. found out later nissan uses re-built trani. right after the initional trani was put in i continued to have the same problem...took it a few times back but all i got was the run around...they stated it might be the motor mount, that got fixed still the problem was there. the car went thru diagnostic reading from 2009 thru 2012 but since the engine light was not on it would not give any diagnosis codes.... until april of this year my transmission skipped again @ approx. 113,500.00 while being tested by a nissan mechanic...updated 07/13/12 *bf

I have a 2004 nissan max se, 6 sp manual transmission. my clutch failed completely out of the blue at 76k miles, currently has 98k. i can barely shift in for the first 20 minutes from cold start, it slips out of gear while driving, sometimes the clutch loses pressure. the dealership was of no help to me. i have been driving stick exclusively for 20 years and this is the worst clutch i have ever driven. i constantly have shift shock and the car is not enjoyable to drive, whatsoever.*tr
I have a 2004 nissan maxima and i read so many complaint about this vehicle especially the transmission i am having and there hasn't been a recall i have had problem with this vehicle such as axle radiator navigation don't work went out electrical problems car is pulling because of transmission. *tr

Have a 04 nissan maxima with 82,000 mile on it. had the 75,000 schedule tune up done to it. now at 82,000 miles my car has a hard jerk when shifting from 1st to 2nd. has a hard deceleration. i took it to the dealership and was told to replace my transmission, a $4,000.00 cost to me. i found a website where i am not the only one that has this problem and i am to believe to think that this is a manufacture problem. please help to resolve. *tr
Noticed car jerked when shifting down from 2nd to 1st. thought i'd better take car in to have looked at and just a few minutes afterwards, my car stopped completely. luckily i was off the freeway and was able to get to the side of the road safely. was told my nissan there was no known issue but the dealer told me otherwise but said i'd still have to replace my transmission. i did that in december 08 and paid $3600 for a rebuilt tran which now has only 5000 miles on it and the "symptoms" of my old one have returned, this time also jerking when accelerating from 1-2. the other day when stopping it jerked so hard i though i had been read ended. if i have to pay another $3,600 for another transmission that's just ludicrous! why cant nissan acknowledge this problem? i cant afford a new car and can't afford paying for new transmissions either. i just want to feel safe and have a smooth ride. *tr
My car jerks violently when driving at slow speeds. when i am driving at speeds less than 20 mph it worsens. if i am in traffic and stop and go again the jerks become more powerful. the gears shift and then gets stuck. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2004 nissan maxima. while driving at various speeds in third and fourth gear, the vehicle would jerk constantly. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealership but no codes were displayed during the diagnostics test. the vehicle had not been repaired at the time of the complaint. the failure mileage was approximately 96,000. the current mileage was approximately 137,000
Transmission is shifting hard. *tr
My car is jerking and bucking bad. there are thousands of people out there with the same problem and nissan is not doing anything about this. i have had my transmission fluid flushed and it has not helped. others have had valve body work done and even replaced the transmission. the cars are still doing the same. the transmissions had to have been poorly built. something needs to be done. i am still paying on the car and having major car issues. nissan needs to be responsible. *tr the consumer was also informed the vehicle needed a new engine. the cd player had to repaired and the air conditioner failed. updated 01/21/10.*jb
As of november 19, 2008 my transmission on my 2004 nissan maxima sl is just about finished. i can no longer go any faster than 20 mph (1st gear automatic) when my car is in drive gear. the only way i can move is to put it into 2nd gear and i can only go as fast as 35 mph. this is an absolute atrocity, and nissan should be held responsible for this major defect. without a working transmission, i cannot get to work nor take my child to daycare. nissan changed the transmission fluid for a pricey $200, but that has done nothing to fix the problem. i am still left with a car that can't go no faster than 20 mph. *tr
I purchased my 2004 nissan maxima two years ago and with about 75,000.00 miles on the car. i started experiencing the same problem around 95,000 miles with the hard shift between first and second gears. i also had a very hard shift between reverse and first. i took it into the dealership regarding this and had the transmission fluid change (transmission flush) and even changed the grade of oil but do not have any change in the hard shift between gears. finally, i took it into another dealership to have the wheels aligned and the dealership noticed that the wheel bearing, cv joint and tie rod end were worn. i had them replaced around 105,000 miles and have not had any problems since with the hard shifts between any gear. i hope this help other nissan maxima owners. these are great cars (this is our third one). *tr
My 2004 nissan maxima has 86,000 miles never wreckedor anything well maintained and just 5 years old the transmission had started jerking and slipping really bad. it does it worse when the fluids are starting to get warm than it does when its cold. mechanics told me best bet is to change it out for a new that just serving it with it slipping that bad would be a waste of money. the transmission has been great until recently i am still paying for this car and still have a few more years left on it and i thought when i bought it since it was put out by nissan that it would be a great vehicle, well it is starting to let me down, i a newborn baby and a wife going to college and here i have to worry if she will get to school or home without breaking down. these transmissions are very expensive to just go out and replace. i am the only one working full time right now and it would be hard to swing around a rough estimate of transmission and labor of about $4500.00. i have researched the internet and found that there are alot of people with these models complaining about the transmission, so if you could please help us and make nissan recall these transmissions before they hurt of kill someone or there family i would personally appreciate it. thanks *tr
2004 nissan maxima transmission slipping and jerking in 1 and 2nd gears. like all the other consumers in here:http://www.carsurvey.org/viewmorecomments_review_61092_12.html. *tr
I got a 2004 nissan maxima last year with about 80,000 miles on it, when the car reached about 90,000 the transmission started jerking when changing gears. the car would not go over 20mph. this is a huge safety hazard. this faulty transmission could harm myself or other drivers on the roads. this happens every time the car is driven. i've taken the car to several different repair shops, including nissan. they all cannot diagnose the problem, but recommended the power flush, which i did. the power flush did nothing for my car. the only it did was set me back $250.00. there are many nissan owners with the same problem. we are very dissatisfied and want something to be done about this. *tr
I purchased a 2004 nissan maxima with only 58,000 miles on it. after it had reached about 65,000 miles i started having problems with my transmission. it would jerk hard into drive. and when slowing down for red lights, it will shift hard when breaking down to stop. i had taken it back to the dealer ship where they charged me to replace the fluids which was not the cause of the problem. it was something within the transmission. they have attempted to repair it, but it is still giving me problems. i think there should be a recall on these transmissions before someone gets killed in a serious accident. *tr
My 2004 nissan maxima 3.5se shifts from 1st to 2nd gear very hard, also from reverse to drive when i back up. this has been happening for a month or so and now my mechanic is saying that i need a new transmission. after some internet research, i see that this problem is happening everywhere with the 2004 maxima. this car has not been in an accident and it now has 100,600 miles. i have just had the rack & pinion replaced last week as well as that was bad ($1100). *tr
I've noticed a pretty severe jerking motion when going from 1st to 2nd gear and again from 2nd to 1st gear in my maxima. i bought it used with 40k miles on it and just recently started to notice the problem when the car hit 58k. seems much worse when moving at slow speeds in the snow. i've noticed several other postings with the same issue. *tr
2004 nissan maxima. jerks bad from 1st to 2nd gear, and downshifting from 2nd to 1st. getting worst as i drive. transmission was flushed, but did not help. i see alot of complaints about this. why haven't there been a recall? *tr
I am also an owner of a 2004 nissan maxima. i have recently passed the 80k mile mark and suddenly began having problems with my transmission shifting hard, just like so many others 04 maxima owners. i've found that there are many other 2004 maxima owners having the same issue. is there anything that can be done about this? *tr
2004 nissan maxima se - bought car in july 2003 brand new. car now has 102000 miles and the transmission is stuck in 5th gear. car slams into all gears prior to 5th. dealership performed the $600+ maintenance service call, including transmission flush. car operated correctly for one day. returned car to and dealership who could not diagnose the problem and now wants $4000+ for a new transmission. dealership even contacted manufacturer to try and find a resolution. we are only given the option of replacing the transmission. infuriating to see that this is obviously a manufacturing problem and yet consumers are being forced to pay for their shoddy work. unacceptable as far as i am concerned. this transmission needs to be recalled asap. this is not coincidence with this model, it's a manufacturing flaw that needs to be addressed. vehicles are too expensive to have to replace transmissions for $4000 at 102000 miles. please address this fleecing or maxima owners. obviously based on prior complaints there will be more owners in the future with similar problems. *tr
I am having the same issues as many other 2004 nissan maxima owners. the issue has to do with the transmission failing and the dealer charging over $5,000.00 to replace it. nissan knows these transmissions are defective and they are not doing anything about it. they are not considering the huge risk factor for people driving these cars of having an accident due to the malfunctioning of the transmissions. the transmission will not downshift or upshift properly in many instances like stopping in a traffic light, going uphill or even just cruising. the concern is the amount of people that are having the same issue and the unnecessary exposure to an accident. thank you, omar *tr
I own a 2004 nissan maxima which was purchased march 2006. have replaced the struts and later found them to have some sort of defect. the radio/cd player went out about 6 months after the purchase of the vehicle. the horn went out, fog lights had a short, had numerous brake problems. a/c had to be re-charged 1 year after purchase..this list goes on. october 16, 2008, i had my vehicle towed due both transmission cooler linesbursing on the fwy. the shop repaired both lines totaling $428.54. today is november 24, 2008 and my vehicle needs to go back to the shop due to the transmission slipping and jerking into gear. i have gone on line and read all the complaints for the 2004 nissan maxima's and the transmission problems. i am having the same issue the other owners have. something needs to be done! there is evidence that nissan north america has not put these maxima's together in a correct manner. these are beautiful cars but are always breaking down. please help! *tr
Owner of a 2004 nissan maxima se experiencing severe jerking when shifting from 1st to 2nd gear. *tr
No event leading to failure. 1. transmission jerking into 1st gear when starting to drive. happens 70% of time, especially when going from reverse to first. no repair has been made at this time. 2. right front side shaking and rattling, need new struts at 60,000 miles. repair taking place next week. 3. continual excessive tire wear, 60k tires get 30-35k miles. car will not stay in alignment. 4. huge bang from back of car then smoke coming out of the radio - bose radio and amp system is blown. digital radio system appears to turn on but no sound. not repaired yet, nissan dealer says i'd need to pay for replacement and diagnostics. 5. replaced half axles and u-joint at 58k miles. *tr
I own a 2004 nissan maxima with under 90,000 miles on it. the transmission on this model started slipping. there is a severe jerk in the tranny when the gears are shifting from 1st to 2nd and from 2nd to 1st. my car has even completely stalled. not to mention the many times i have been going uphill and even pedal to the floor the car isn't moving. i have researched the issue on the internet and have noticed that there are hundreds of people experiencing the same issue. i was told by a dealer that the transmission would have to be replaced resulting in a bill over $3k. this is ridiculous when there is enough evidence that there should be a recall on this part. how many people have to complain about the situation. i've researched the many complaints submitted to this particular site and there are hundreds. does someone have to die first before nissan takes action. this is a safety issue that needs to be taken seriously and addressed. *tr
I noticed my 2004 maxima transmission slipping from 1st to 2nd gear and violently jerking i took my car to the dealer and they told me my motor mounts were broken i changed them($600) and the problem was not solved i took it back and they told me i was down a quart of transmission fluid but my transmission is not leaking anywhere so i made them supposedly fill it up i finally took my car to a transmission specialist and found that i have a defective transmission valve body after doing more research i found that this is a very common problem with the 04-06 nissan maximas, the specialist told me he gets them all the time, im sure if i kept going back to the dealer they would tell me i need a new $4500 transmission knowing that there valve bodies are defective this has to stop nissan is taking people on a run around with this issue i think the part should be recalled because it makes the car unsafe (example) when you step on the gas to take off the car feels like it stays in first gear to a certain point then slams into second gear while the car is in motion causing the car to launch forward this almost caused property damage in my case, to make it worse the dealers are telling people other things are wrong with there car instead of dealing with the issue and recalling the problem. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2004 nissan maxima. the contact is experiencing difficulty with the transmission. the vehicle is currently in the repair shop. through online research, the contact discovered identical failures. one website advises viewers to call nhtsa to file a compliant so that a recall will be issued. the vin was unknown. the current and failure mileages were 13,400.
I started having problems with the transmission on my 2004 nissan maxima. since i was out of warranty i took it to a local trans mission shop. at the time i had about 70k miles on this vehicle. i was told there was a problem with the reverse and third gears, and i needed a rebuild. after $2000.00 and several trips to the transmission shop i,m still having the same issues. after reading customer complaints of others with this model vehicle i decided to submit a complaint of my own. *tr
Bad transmission. *tr
The 2004 maxima transmission is shifting very hard. and the problem seems to not be able to be fixed. *tr
1. my problems occur with my 2004 nissan maxima when i started to notice that from a take off after a toll that the car would jerk into second gear. it has since progressed into a jerking and slamming into 2nd and 3rd gear on acceleration and 3rd to 2nd and 2nd to 1st in deceleration. it happens every day that i use my car. i have had my transmission fluid flushed and several engine sensors replaced by a nissan dealership. the problem has never gone away and just gets worse with time. *tr
My 2004 nissan maxima transmission is slipping this will be he third time i have taken it to the dealership.... if so many people have this same problem why haven't there been an recall or investigation. *tr
Nissan maxima se 2004 i purchased the above veh and it worked fine until recently i strong noticing that the veh jerks whenever i try to accelerate from 1st to 2nd gear. it also do the same while i reserve. i have complained to nissan on many occasion and the current dealers and nothing where done. i have also been able to establish that many nissan owners for the above veh have had the same particular problem. without a boudt nissan is very aware of this defect with its transmission but the are not recalling this product to be fixed. *tr
I have nissan maxima se 2004 which started to jerk when i reach 40mph speed and when gears are shifted. i researched and found that many other people are having same problem with this model. there seems to be no help available for this problem and car is just getting worse by the day. please do something about it. *tr
Transmission on my 2004 nissan maxima is slipping. it will not always go into 1st or 2nd gear. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2004 nissan maxima. on approximately six occasions, the engine revved while approaching a stop. the brake was being depressed at the time of the failures. the abs actuator had to be replaced at 62,000 miles. two of the goodyear tires cracked and had to be replaced. the current mileage was 63,000 and failure mileage was 62,000. updated 12/1/08 *cn the consumer also stated there was a problem with the transmission. updated 12/05/08. *jb
I have a 2004 maxima (92, 000 miles) with transmission jerking problems. locking, had transmission flush, sam e issue. *tr
I purchased my 2004 nissan maxima in the summer of june 2007. the car was used, but in excellent condition. recently i noticed my car began jerking between 1st and 2nd gear on my automatic transmission and the problem began getting worse. i took my car to the nissan dealership to see what was wrong with it yesterday. they told me my front engine mounts were broken and that my warranty did not cover the parts, and that it would be around $740.00 to get it fixed plus the $116.00 diagnostics fee. i began reading online about this problem with other maxima owner's and it seems my problem is very common. if this is something that occurs so often on the 2004 maxima why doesn't nissan recall all of the nissan maximas and get the problem fixed. i understand they will lose money, but isn't the maxima supposed to be their top of the line sports sedan. i guess something really bad has to happen to someone before they will consider fixing the problem. i will never buy another nissan if this is the quality of cars they are building. *tr
2004 nissan maxima se - we've been advised by a nissan dealership that we need a new transmission for $4000 after we took it in for shifting slow between park and drive and drive and 1st and trembling while in idle & some slipping. also, we were charged $145 for nissan to check the fluid and they told us that there was burning. i called nissan consumer affairs and filed a formal complaint. we were told that this is a common issue w/04 maxima owners because of a "design flaw" in the tranny. this is a shame because i have been a loyal maxima driver since i was 16. nissan needs to admit they have an issue with these transmission and a recall needs to be done. *tr
Having problems with the transmission as many others had... knowing the brand of the vehicle its impossible to believe that such problems occur.. *tr
2004 nissan maxima transmission failure. this is a known problem my nissan and they fail to address the problem. it shifts very hard from 1-2 gear, even known for breaking the motor mounts. failure began at 60,000 miles, but has gotten worse over time. this issue could lead to a major accident or even death of driver or passengers. *tr
2004 maxima, automatic. when the transmission change to 2nd gear and to 3rd it slip. i hear that is a problem of the 2004 maxima. *tr
When driving, the vehicle will shift into 5th gear by itself and stay locked in that gear. when this initially occurs the engine will stall, making it very difficult to steer due to loss of power steering. after restarting the vehicle, transmission remains in 5th gear making it hazardous to drive in any conditions. *tr
Transmission knocks and downshifts hard from 2nd to 3rd and 3rd to 2nd. also, the when going up hills, transmission sometimes acts like if it is in neutral and then it catches again with a big jerk and hard knock in the transmission. i also notice that when i place the shifter lever in "d", it takes about 5 seconds for it to actually kick into drive mode. it is a safety hazard as an accident could easily occur. also, i noticed that this only happens after the car is been running for a while. acts ok when engine/transmission cold. this car only has 69000 miles. looked around and found many similar transmission issues with this vehicle. *tr
