We have classified the 315 complaints from 2004 Nissan Maxima about POWER TRAIN into the following categories.
Transmission skips after driving approximately 15 miles. when putting in gear it jerks and when stopping it also jerks. called nissan consumer and they gave me the run around about sending someone to check it. recently found on www.mycarstats.com numerous complaints from customers with the same problem that i am having with my 2004 nissan maxima. car currently has 91,000 miles and it has been having this problem since around the 85,000 mark and i have not received proper assistance from the nissan consumers. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2004 nissan maxima. while driving various speeds, the transmission began to slip and jerk while switching from first to second gear. there were no recalls available. the vin was unknown. the current mileage was 53,000 and failure mileage was 50,000.
Transmission slipped and vehicle surged forward striking a vehicle. abs system faulted as i stopped. *tr
Problem with transmission - slipping when shifting from 1st to 2nd gear; it hesitates to catch and when it does is jerks violently into gear. the transmission is now dead and no longer works at all. it is at the dealer while i await a response from nissan for a goodwill fix. my research yielded a multitude a 2004 nissan maxima owners have the exact same problem and have had to replaced their transmission. this is not an isolated incident. it is hazardous to public as when merging into traffic that's already at 55 mph or more, it hesitates and stall and can indeed cause an accident. *tr updated
Transmission problem between gear 1 & 2. i had to replace transmission @ 70,000 miles. terrible slippage and bucking. wouldn't accelerate into gear in a safe time frame. *tr
There seems to be a problem with the transmissions on the 2004 maxima's. on a website http://www.carsurvey.org/viewmorecomments_review_61092_1.html, many people are complaining of the same thing. when i accelerate and go between 2nd and 3rd gear the car stalls and slams making a loud noise it does it when decelerating also. i think these transmissions should be recalled. i will take it to the dealer on tuesday. *tr
My 2004 nissan maxima transmission keeps jumping in lower gears and it seems this is a recurring problem with many other owners of this model vehicle it is a defect with vehicle that nissan has to apparently known about and since most of these cars have high mileage they will not honor any warranty. *tr
I own a 2004 nissan maxima. i faithful kept up with the maintenance schedule on the vehicle, since purchasing the vehicle in 2003 ( i have receipts). i took the car to the miller nissan in van nuys for maintenance. i informed them several times prior to my transmission going out that my car was not running appropriately. they would tell me that it was okay and would give me a transmission flush. finally the transmission went out and they wanted $5000 or more to repair it. they misdiagnosed the problem and would not take any responsibility for their actions. i have talked to other owners of 2004 maxima's and they have had similar transmission problems. eventually i had to take the vehicle to a aaa approved auto shop to get it repaired because i could not afford $5000 from the dealership and they refused to pay for the repair. i have owned a chevy cavalier that have 184,000 (1997) never had a transmission or engine problem to this date. i wasted all of my money keeping the transmission maintained by following the schedule and it still went out. i was taken advantage of. *tr
The transmission of my 2004 nissan maxima se appears to have the very same symptoms of failure that i am reading on line (car survey.com, edmunds, etc). the transmission performs roughly and erratically on a consistent basis, and began when car had only 70-75,000 miles on it. i purchased this vehicle new in san diego. i have just spoken to my transmission specialist/mechanic who tells me that they would try to fix problem from a code that came up on their diagnostic device, however i am not certain this will fully solve problem. i have never owned a vehicle in my 35 years of driving that has had this type of severe mechanical performance issue in transmission. *tr
I have a 04 nissan maxima, that has been giving me some transmission problems. i was told i needed new motor mounts. paid for the front. but after searching many 04 maximas are having these same transmission problems. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2004 nissan maxima. while attempting to accelerate from a traffic light, the vehicle would not move. the contact had to shut off the vehicle and wait a few minutes to restart it before it would drive normally again. the failure occurred several times at various speeds. the vehicle was taken to the dealer and they stated that the catalytic converter and transmission were failing. the current and failure mileages were 84,000.
2004 nissan maxima, 6 speed manual transmission 4-door sedan. at 73,000 miles, a grinding noise began when shifting into second gear. also, shortly thereafter, the transmission began to 'seize' where you could not shift at all; this all culminated while on a trip to the bicycle shop with my 3 kids, getting stranded (luckily made it to a parking lot) where the transmission would not even come out of gear. took the car to a local dealership, and after $1300 in repairs (new clutch) the 'seizing' problem is back 2 months later, and the grinding was never fixed; they told me that would be an extra $1300... looks like many sentras are having similar synchronizer issues as my maxima - as well as other maximas. why can't we hold nissan accountable for their product deficiencies? please help - thanks!! *tr
My 2004 nissan maxima se slips during 1st and 2nd gear, when accelerating and decelerating, and while coming off the freeway it knocks while switching gears. it also misses gears when i slow down and break and then try to accelerate ,the rpm revs up and then it catches the gear. *tr
I bought my car 4 moths ago, is a nissan maxima 2004 and since i did i am having problems with the transmission and i found out those 2004 cars 95% have the same problems i been reading reviews from car surveys.com and everybody have the same transmission problem. please i need your help what we can do about it, thank you. *tr
Nissan maxima 2004 -2006 definitely a safety problem with the tranmissions that nissan has tried to cover up for the last 5 years please investigate or google problems with this model you will come across thousands of buyers who have had multiple transmission problems with 50,000 miles or more that nissan will not cover or claim its something isolated wrong ,and just how toyota tried to cover there tracks nissan needs to make a recall for this model and i hope whoever reads this please investigate it and the proof is there all we need is help my next step is contacting a lawyer. we as consumers pay alot of money for these vehicles and they should perform properly. very hard jerking in transmission. *tr
My 2004 nissan maxima transmission is completely gone its going cost $3000 for a new one..i have done some research online and thousands of 2004 nissan maxima se & sl the transmission has failed nissan needs to be held responsible & recall these vehicles this is my first and last nissan. *tr
My 2004 maxima se, reported to dealership that my transmission was not shifting from 0km to 60km mileage (159km) before my warranty expires, told that this is normal wear and tear, change car, many times returning , dealership flush transmission, but problem still there, seems to be an intermittent thing, pressure related therefore days with no problem but then problem returning, finally became fed up so demand dealership to have me speak with the nissan rep. to slove this problem. in my investigating i found that there is alot of complaint about this same exact issue and the mileage sometimes is just 60km or even lower thus proving that this problem is not mileage related but part related. meaning that nissan has a faulty transmission which should be recalled as this is a problem for consumers especially regarding the safety of the vehicle. the car at times jolts forward with no warning a potential of hitting someone especially in the winter months, not to mention that the car can just suddenly stop working in the middle of no where, which can be deadly in minus degree weather. the dealerships only answer is to repair or replace car, because the problem started before the warranty was expired then the repairs should be taken care of ,in my opinion but according to the dealership, if you are not broken down at the side of the road then the transmission is not completely broken so nissan will not repair. this i have a problem because once the part is not performing its function then repairs should be done as it is broken, it does not have to be ceased in its complete function but as long as a part of the it has ceased then something should be done to bring the vehicle back to its function and this should not be at the cost of the consumer especially if they have purchased extended warranty which includes this part of the vehicle. now that the vesicle has passed the kms its easy to say well one should change to another vehicle but that is not the issue. *tr
The transmission was diagnosed by the dealership as having internal failure and upon them telling me that they also stated that the 2004 maxima has a tremendous amount of transmission issues and because of that they redesigned the transmission in the 2005 model. my car has 61,000 on it and this happened and nissan basically said tough!!! they are aware of an issue yet have done nothing to help. as i found this out i researched the issue and they are alot of issues with people and the transmission and i think enough for an investigation but nobody has done anything. *tr
Vehicle began slipping gears and loosing power when shifting 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 1st. dealer states needed a trans flush. this was performed and improvement was noted for approx 300 miles. vehicle began have trouble at 61,000 miles. just out of warranty. i am told that the only solution is a new transmission. i am not the only maxima owner with this same problem. *tr
Transmission is jerking. i just purchased the 2004 nissan maxima and i am experiencing a jerking in the vehicle when it shifts from 1st gear to 2nd and vice-versa. *tr
I have been experiencing transmission problems about 80,000 with 04 nissan maxima. the gears slips for 1st to 2nd and from 2nd to 1st and jerks when if finally shifts. the car halts when going for r to d and giving a hard jerk when in gear. this is unsafe when backing out into traffic. *tr
Transmission jerks in 1st to 2nd gear and from 3rd back to 2nd when car warms up. *tr
I have a 2004 nissan maxima and recently had automatic transmission trouble. the car would not accelerate with the normal power and it jerks when up/down shifting in low gears. the check engine light came on. there seems to be a problem with the valve body on the transmission which is common to this vehicle from viewing similar type complaints. nissan refuses to handle the situation since the vehicle is out of warranty. i believe this to be a known defect on the part of the dealer. the violent unpredictable behavior of the transmission may cause a serious accident when occurring while driving on major roads. *tr
Constant motor mounts replaced, constant struts replaced. constant transmission slipping between 1 and 2nd gears. *tr
2004 nissan maxima faulty transmission. *tr
A year after the purchase of my 2004 nissan maxima i have experienced severe transmission problems. the transmission slips and jerks. i have changed the fluids on a timely manner and the car is still giving me problems. i believe nissan should make a recall on this vehicle considering there are others out there experiencing the same problem. *tr
I started to notice my transmission slipping from 1st to 2nd gear on my 2004 nissan maxima with 58,000 miles. i took it in to the nissan dealer and they recommended a transmission fluid change and was advised nothing was wrong with the transmission. i agreed to the transmission fluid replacement but the problem persist. i have encountered a website where hundreds of other consumers have the same problem on the 04 nissan maxima. the dealer or the nissan headquarters are listening to us and are refusing to help or even recall this faulty transmission. *tr
I have a 2004 nissan maxima with a bad transmission. i bought it new. it has 85,000 miles. since the beginning of 20078 the car started giving me problems on first and second gear. it jerks, slips and will no change gears when it needs it. i took it to the dealer, they had me replace the abs system telling me it will fix the problem, because the abs light was on. spend $2,000.00. the problem got worse. they said that there was a short on the grounds of my cd player (that is a trip computer and info display) it cost me $1,700.00. the problem was not fixed. i went on-line and there are 100's of people complaining about the same issue. i need my car to work, now i have to spend $4,000.00 fixing he transmission. it is ridiculous that i just finished paying for my car and i have to invest have of the value into something that should not be broken. please help me.....a lot of people are having this problem and nissan is saying they can not recall this transmission because it is not a safety issue. to me it is, because it has to do with driving the car. *tr
My 2004 maxima does the hard shifting from 1st to 2nd and hesitates to go into gear. it also shifts hard when having to slow down and then re-accelerate. it does the hard shifting from 1st to 2nd and hesitates to go into gear. it also shifts hard when having to slow down and then re-accelerate. i did a transmission fluid change on it, however still no difference. called nissan and they said to do a transmission flush and fill, and it should stop, took it in for a service and no difference, just out 200+. they said it would need a new transmission if that didn't work, and after reading all about all the problems everyone else is having, i seriously doubt i'm going to invest anymore time or money into this car. *tr
My 2004 nissan maxima has been having transmission problems ( jerking motion when car shifts from 1st to 2nd gear. this has been going on for about 6 months. i have changed transmission oil, but have been suggested that it might need a new transmission at 82,000 miles. *tr
Me and my wife own a 2004 nissan maxima, last year it has started having tranny problems. when you accelerate it jerks very hard as it shifts and when put in drive it slams the car very hard. this has occurred with many other owners in exact same detail. i researched the problem online and many people are suffering from this event. the maxima is suppose to be high quality and very reliable when nissan is selling the car, but not after its sold and in your name. please investigate, this should be a recall. *tr
Nissan maxima 2004 3.5 se. the transmission jerks extremely badly at 20 mph. *tr
Hard jerks in transmission while going up from 2nd to 3rd gear or coming down from 3rd to 2nd. occurs almost everyday when the car has warmed up. *tr
Transmission shifting funny when in 1st and 2nd gear slipping and jerking. *tr
I believe that there should be a recall to the 2004 nissan maximum se for their transmission. i came across a complaint website and found that there are alot of people going through the same thing as i. my transmission has been jerking alot and it is very dangerous having to think that one day someone will hit my car from behind because my transmission will stall on me. please help!! they really need to recall this because i believe it is a manufacture problem. *tr
The transmission on my 2004 has been having problems about the past 3 years. the car jerks hard from 1 to 2nd gear and then 2 to 3rd gear... the car shifts as hard as it does in a manual transmission car and it is automatic. i have looked on some online websites and they have many other angry customers that have the same problem as i do without no recall. it is just a matter of time before someone gets hurt from a common faulty product. *tr
My car jerks when it changes gears. it has 87000 miles on it. i checked online to get a idea of what it can be and saw that many other people are experiencing the exact same thing. it seems a recall is in order. also i noticed that the car shakes and this has happened around 40000 miles. also people had similar postings. there seems to be no real solution that will fix the car longer than one month. please investigate. *tr
I have a nissan maxima se with 88,0000 miles that has started jerking heavily and slipping between first and second, took it to nissan dealer explained situation and asked if it could be tranny told i had 4 motor mounts that needed replacing, replaced two and still same problem ,took car to a mechanic and told that it is the transmission. *tr
Transmission started slipping and then jerking constantly in first gear at 80k miles and needed to be replaced by a new transmission= $3500. defective strut/strut mounts aprox. every 40k miles. replaced and covered by nissan the first incident, is now hundreds to fix the second time. ac hose cracked and caused a leak at 40k miles and was $275 to replace. cracked again at 80k miles, leaking. replaced :$300. *tr
Car's transmission jerks violently, and unpredictably, when it shifts between 1st & 2nd gears. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2004 nissan maxima. while driving at any speed, the gear seems as if it is too high and causes the vehicle to jerk. the failure also occurs during downshifting. the contact took the vehicle to the dealer and they flushed the transmission, but this did not correct the issue. through research, the contact found numerous complaints on this same failure and he believes a recall should be issued. the failure mileage was 80,000 and current mileage was 149,000. updated 7/1/09 *cn the consumer stated at times while stopped at a light, the gear would read 5th gear on the dash. the transmission was not shifting properly. updated 07/07/09.*jb
Tl* the contact owns a 2004 nissan maxima. the contact stated the transmission gear shift failed to shift in reverse or drive. the transmission was replaced at 68,000 miles, but the failure was not corrected. the vehicle was towed to the dealer for diagnostic testing; however, they were unable to locate a failure code. the vehicle was not repaired. the vin was not available. the failure mileage was 68,000 and the current mileage was 180,000.
My nissan maxima 2004 violently jerks when shifting gears up and down. this problem happens usually after the car warmed up and been driven for a hour or so but can happen anytime. it doesn't happen all the time about 50% of the time. told the dealer and they said they cant feel it and i must just continue you to drive the vehicle. this is dangerous when on the highway cause when changing lanes and the car shifts down it jerks bad and can cause me to crash if im not careful.i am very disappointed and am requesting something to be done. thank you *tr
While driving my 2004 nissan maxima on highway 92 leading to fort huachuca az, the car came to a complete stop from the speed of 45mph. jerking me forward. prior to this the car had been in and out of the dealership at least twice because of a metallic noise coming from the engine compartment. none of the repairs fixed the problem all of which i had to pay for. the transmission went out while driving at speeds of 45mph and the car jerk violently when switching from 1st to 2nd gear before coming stuck in 5th gear. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2004 nissan maxima. approximately one year after purchasing the vehicle in 2007, the vehicle began jumping out of gear unexpectedly. the contact feels that the vehicle is unsafe to drive because it automatically changes gears during braking and accelerating. through research, he discovered other vehicles with the same failure and feels that a recall should be issued. the dealer was aware of the failure and stated that it was related to the transmission. the vehicle has not been repaired; however, the repair would cost $5,000. the failure mileage was 75,000 and current mileage was 98,000.
I have a 2004 nissan maxima se 45,000 roughly that was purchased used in 2007. several months later after driving the car the transmission would jerk as if someone hit me from behind. the force was so unbearable that it was if someone hit me and i felt like i had whiplash. i had the transmission fluid replace but the problem only got worst. then jan 2008 nissan agreed to. *tr
My 2004 maxima began shifting really hard from 1st gear to 2nd gear for about the past 3 months now and i was in disbelief it was my transmission since i service my car regularly and don't beat on my car. i just found out after changing the sensors, transmission filter and fluid that it can only be my transmission. after doing my research, i found that this problem was not isolated and it is recurring problem with alot of 2004 maximas. i think this problem with the transmission should be a recall because it is a real safety issue. every time i merge onto the parkway i'm in fear that my car wont accelerate in time and i cause a accident. we should not wait until this causes someone to be injured or die in order to issue a recall. *tr
I have a 2004 nissan maxima, 130,000 miles. transmission jerks when shifting from 1st to 2nd or downshifting. also seems to disengage when decelerating into a turn and then slams into gear when accelerating. sometimes the tranny will go into a 3rd gear lock and the possibility of entering an intersection with unknowingly slow acceleration due to this could be dangerous!. i took the car to the dealer and they said the cam sensors were bad. $500 plus dollars later it is still doing the same thing. i took it back to dealer and they said it needs new tranny. i waited a few weeks and took it in again and now they say it needs a new transmission valve body. i did tt the mechanic at the dealer and he said he replaces the valve body all the time.www.carsurvey.org has thousands of complaints exactly like mine. dealerships are dancing around know issues and expecting every car owner to put a new transmission in their car. i contacted nissan and they opened a claim, but their solution was that my car was out of warranty and that there was nothing else they could do. i believe that nissan needs to accept some responsibility for a faulty designed transmission. *tr
04 maxima se w/ 55k miles. took in to nissan dealer due to problems shifting from 2nd to 1st and 1st to 2nd. they recommended transmission flush and said 2 motor mounts were broke. did not fix the problem. replaced transmission with used 04 maxima transmission w/ 21k miles from totaled car, this transmission is also bad with the same problem, shifting hard from 2nd to 1st. 3rd transmission in the mail w/ 6k miles. very dissapointed in nissan. will never buy a nissan again. *tr
2004 nissan maxima transmission upshifts and downshifts too hard between 1st and 2nd. also normal accelerating after making turns, causes an unbearable jerk. *tr
