We have classified the 315 complaints from 2004 Nissan Maxima about POWER TRAIN into the following categories.
2004 nissan maxima transmission slips occasionally. trouble shifting from 1 to 2 gear. sometimes when i start the car it barely moves until it catches up to the 2nd gear. it's winding out and grinding. then other days it's fine as if it never had a problem. the car has also shut off on me for no reason. *tr
I just purchased a 2004 nissan maxima and i am experiencing problems with the transmission. when up or down shifting from 1st to 2nd or 2nd to 3rd the car jerks periodically. while leaving a red light the car revved up from 1st to 2nd gear and when the car finally engaged i nearly hit the car in front of me. on another occasion while leaving a red light i almost got rearended because my car started to move and then the transmission slipped and then jerked into gear. i went on line to see if there was a fix for the problem without taking it to the shop and that's when i seen some nissan maxima forums and discovered that there hundreds of 04 maxima owners that are experiencing the same transmission problems. most people say that they have had to replace their transmission at an average cost of 3500.00 dollars. i am a hard working american and i will be paying on this car for the next 4 years and now i am worried i will have to spend 3500.00 that i don't have on a transmission that appears to be a defective part from nissan. i expect more out of a 5 year old car. *tr
Transmission on my 2004 nissan maxima se, is still shifting too hard and jerking. when engine warms up. transmission defected. *tr
2004 nissan maxima 3.5se auto. transmission jerks from reverse to drive and slips from 1st to 2nd. *tr
1. i just bought my 2004 nissan maxima with 56000 miles on it about 2 weeks ago. 2. i started to notice the a buckling and delay with the transmission between 1st and 2nd gears on an automatic. it occurs quiet often. the car does not move when i give it gas, so i give it more gas and then it jumps into gear and speeds up rapidly, causing to drive hazardously. 3. the car was just purchased and all the check ups were done on the car. *tr
I purchased a 2004 nissan maxima and it all seemed fine for a bit but once i hit around 90k miles, the transmission started having problems. first, when i shift from park to any other gear. it seems to either hesitate to shift into gear and once it does it shifts in a horrible knock! i took it in for service and they replaced motor mounts. i suggested it may be the transmission, the dealership ignored that. now, it continues to do the same problem as well as slip gears while in motion. it usually slips from 1st to 2nd, or 2nd to 3rd. it causes the car to rev and shifts when it wants. that makes it snap even harder. this to me seems very dangerous and i don't know what to do because my car just ran out of it's extended warranty. i don't have the money for a transmission repair. also, there has not been a fire, property damage, or crash that i know of. however, this is an extreme safety hazard on the road. *tr
2004 nissan maxima car is banging changing gears and also getting suck in 5th gear and wont come out till i turn the engine off. replace transmission fluid no change, cannot afford new transmission the car has 67,000 miles. *tr
After only 2 years of ownership our 2004 nissan maxima are having some issues. first the transmission now we are having a hard time starting the car. after the diagnostic test we needed to replace the camshaft position sensor. however that does not solve the transmission problem. we are driving and all of a sudden our car loses tension. we accelerate and it doesn't get us any further. we are looking at rebuilding our transmission and trading in the car because it's really not worth all the issues the car is starting to have. according to the internet there's been a lot of these problems with these cars. *tr
I have a 2004 maxima that i purchased in 2/08 with only 30,000 miles at the time of purchase. starting in may of 2008 i took the car in for a jerking sensation that i never felt before, the dealer said that it was a motor mount problem which was fixed. and just a month later i took the car back for the same problem and they told me that they had to flush the transmission, didn't work. in 9/08 they supposedly rebuilt my transmission but what do you know that today i had to take my car back to the dealer for the 7th time. they have my car now, i took it to them complaining of the same hard down shift jerking i feel when i downshift or turn corner, even as i almost come to a stop but continue to accelerate, the car shifts very hard, like a whiplashing feeling. i don't feel safe in the car anymore, i have to work and go to school and need reliable means of transportation for me and my children. i took it to nissan today and they told me that it was definitely a transmission problem and the only way to fix this problem would be to get a whole new transmission that i cannot afford and even the extended warranty that i purchased when i bought the vehicle doesn't cover a brand new transmission only a rebuilt one, and the rebuilt one is what is making my car worse. nissan needs to take care of their customers and provide a recall for this problem, they are really loosing customers this way because right now i would not recommend a nissan to anyone, if they took better care of there guest and fixed all the transmission problems and they do know that there is a problem then maybe they would get better feedback from us paying consumers and we would recommend them to family and friends, and we would know nissan for taking good care of there guests. please help everyone solve this matter before its to late. *tr
Transmission slips then jerks really hard when going into 1st and 2nd gear and going from drive to reverse making it impossible to accelerate to get out of harm's way. the bad transmission causes wear on motor mounts therefore creating another horrible situation. i am among so many that have had issues with this make/model car.... somebody do something! *tr
Vehicle started to slam into gears and hesitate to move. gear shifter moves freely through all the gears no problem. however, on my way into work one day the transmission made a loud thud and would not move any longer. dealership stated that they could fix it for $4,000. the vehicle was just about a year outside of its warranty. you can place the car into gear and the rpm's will drop like it should, however, when you press on the accelerator the car does not move. the car has been parked since then. i have read hundreds of reports from other nissan maxima owners that have had the same or similar issues. *tr
2004 nissan maxima se, transmission does not engage properly, constant knock between 2nd and 3rd gear, also gets stuck on 5th gear. *tr
2004 nissan maxima with 101k miles. i am noticing a severe jerking motion when braking or while trying to accelerate. the jerk makes you think that someone has hit you from the back. and most recently when starting my car i noticed that when shifting to drive that it slips. i press on the gas, flooring the pedal, and then i "creep" to 10 mph and so on. it takes almost 20 seconds to get up to a cruising speed. this is very dangerous. i nearly caused an accident after stopping at a red light and then trying to accelerate after the light turned green. *tr
Im having safety issue with 2004 nissan maxima, the transmission get stuck in high gear and shift very hard, my car only has 65 k miles and this seen like a problem that has happened to a lot of maxim. *tr
I bought my 2004 nissan maxima 3.5 sl used from a dealership that i worked at. i bought it with 68,798 miles on it on october 31st, 2008. within 2 weeks of owning the car, i noticed transmission issues. the transmission would slip going into second gear and when it would finally shift it would be very harsh, harsh enough to chirp the tires. after a couple months of this, the transmission really started acting up. the day i took it in to have the transmission replaced, it started slipping going into third gear as well. on the freeway home from work, it would not go into overdrive. i turned around and went back to the dealership to drop it off. in february of 2009, i had the dealership i worked for replace the transmission under the aftermarket warranty that i purchased with the vehicle. not only did the warranty company order the wrong transmission 2 times, but i was without my car for 37 days. luckily the warranty company paid for a rental car! less than one year later, i had the same problems occurring. luckily i knew the symptoms and had the transmission replaced again under the 12 month 12,000 warranty that came with the nissan remanufactured transmission. this was just about 1 year after the first replacement and about 8,000 miles. so, long story short, first transmission replacement was done in february 2009, second transmission was replaced in february 2010. the dealership i work for now happens to be where the car was always serviced, so i know it's history. it was very well maintained. by the way, my maxima has the 4-speed automatic. *tr
2004 nissan maxima 107,000 miles,.automatic transmissions - slipping from 1st to 3rd gear causing the car to jerk violently when it reengage. the internet consumer forms/boards are flooded with people experiencing the same problem on the 2004/2005 maxima . this is a known defect that nissan is not willing to address and us charging consumers an average of $4000 to repair. *tr
2004 nissan maxima se has 58,000. transmissions jerks, car falls out of gear while driving. i took it to the dealer 2 months ago, they said transmission fluid and flush cost $400.00 it didn't fix the problem, i took it in again 2 days ago. they said $4800 for a new transmission!! note: i have an extended warranty so the $4800 is covered but i am out $400 for the flush plus $50.00 deductible. additionally, i have done web searches on this car and problem. this problem is happening to a lot of people. please not that my car slipped out of gear on the expressway so this is a very dangerous problem!! *tr
I have a 2004 nissan maxima se model.. car only has 98k miles and has a transmission problem..slipping of gears.. i looked online many other people have the same problems.. i just bought it four months ago but only had one month warranty..i was dumb... now i need to change my transmission...costing 4k just for that.... nissan would fix this problem..many others have it.. please do something about this. *tr
1. begin experiencing transmission slippage around 65k miles. had the transmission services. the problem subsided for a short period. had the transmission serviced again for the same problem at 80k miles. at 90k the conditioned worsened; the car jerked when slowing and going from reverse to drive - nissan could not pinpoint the problem. took it back to nissan and they recommended a new transmission - cost 4k. 2. the failure has worsened. it happens every day - some days the car slams into drive or when slowing down - the intensity is changes day to day. the failure has caused someone to run into the back of my vehicle. 3. nothing has been done to correct the failure. transmission services has been done to improve the failure and from what i have read a new transmission does not necessarily correct the failure - some owners experience the same symptoms with the new transmission after x number of miles. *tr
I own a 2004 nissan maxima with approx 102k miles on it and the automatic transmission has been slipping from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd gear quite regularly. it also shifts very rough from 1st to 2nd and back down from 2nd to 1st. after reading several blogs online this seems to be a very common problem with the 2004 maxima but for some reason there has been no recall. i feel as though nissan should definitely be held liable for this problem considering how common a problem it is. *tr
I have a 2004 nissan maxima. the problem is the automated transmission. the transmission slips so hard that it makes the car jerk forward. even one passenger thought i hit something in the street. had the transmission fluid replaced, but the problem continues. *tr
My 2004 nissan maxima stalled out on me while i was on the freeway and caused an accident while i wasn't able to merge to the right due to heavy traffic. i had to stop on the left side next to the divider. 2 car collision behind me because of this. do something please. *tr
Nissan maxima 2004 transmission is only stuck on fifth gear and will not function right after taking it to the dealership to get it fixed. *tr
I have a 2004 maxima with 65,000 miles and already having trouble with transmission. *tr
Car malfunction on transmission. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2004 nissan maxima. the contact was driving approximately 30 mph when the transmission caused the vehicle to jerk violently with hesitation. the contact stated that the failure recurred whenever the vehicle was in operation. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where they were unable to duplicate failure and there were no repairs. the failure mileage was approximately 85,000.
Tl*the contact owns a 2004 nissan maxima. while driving between 35-45 mph on normal road conditions, the transmission slipped without warning. in addition, there was erratic shifting between gears. when the gear shifter was moved from drive into reverse, an excessive jerking motion occurred. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for inspection and it was discovered that the cv axle differential failed. the vehicle has not been repaired. the failure mileage was 95,000 and current mileage was 106,000.
Transmission in 2004 nissan maxima jerks abruptly when going from 1st to 2nd gear. this started at approximately 60k miles. at that time, it was just assumed to be a random event. however, at approximately 75k miles, the jerking became more and more consistent, almost causing an accident due to the jerking happening in a random nature. the vehicle was taken to a nissan dealership and they recommended a "transmission flush" be performed every 18 - 24 months. i got the flush done and it seemed to work for about 2 months, then started again. at that point, i took the car to a different dealership that recommended a "transmission flush" because the fluid seemed a little dark. i then informed them that the flush had been performed 6 months prior at another dealership. the response was, "you should have it replaced sooner rather than later..." an engine diags check turned up, you guessed it, no problem with the transmission. this seems to be a recurring theme of many owners who explain very similar issues with their maximas. *tr
Car will shift hard and jerk from 1st to second gear and from 2nd to 1st when decelerating. it makes it difficult to stop and control the vehicle and fear for my safety and my kids as well. *tr
I have a 2004 nissan maxima, the transmission shifts hard between 1st and 2nd gear. seems to be worse when the car is warmed up. *tr
Automatic transmission has very hard shifts and delays in shifting between gears occurs more often after warming up. *tr
I have a 2004 nissan maxima and i am experiencing transmission problems, when i shift to drive and let off the brake, it jerks hard, this seems to happen changing from 1st and 2nd gear, this action is starting to happen often. *tr
I drive a 2004 nissan maxima se. the problem is the transmission. it shifts very hard from gears 1-3 upshifting and downshifting. i just purchased the car in august and now the dealership tells me i need a new tranny which i cannot afford right now. it is an extreme safety hazard on the road and when i talked to nissan they said there is nothing they can do about it. this obvious defect needs to be recognized by nissan and replaced and fixed at their expense. *tr
Transmission violatly jerks and gears hang up in 5th. *tr
2004 nissan maxima transmission problems. down shifts hard from 2 to 1. only 75,000 miles. mechanic saying i need a new transmission. *tr
Transmission failure - 68,000 miles, car engine guns but does not move (can get a couple of meters before behavior is exhibited) when in drive. turning off and on ignition will again give you a couple of meters. was purchased new but told its not covered under warranty and that expired at 60,000 miles. *tr
I have a nissan maxima 2004 and the transmission slips and jerks going from 1st to 2nd or downwards. i know i m not the only one with this problem. im at 101k miles and the transmission shouldn't be doing this at this point. i understand this a manufacturer problem. they charge me 4000 to get a replacement and i feel nissan should pay for it call a recall on these cars. *tr
The engine started to whine during normal routine driving with only 55k miles. this repair will cost thousands of dollars and based on the frequency of this repair with the transmission and timing chain in 2004 maximas, the logical recourse from a manufacturer's point of view should be a product recall. *tr
Vehicle idles and stalls out. when started back up, the transmission is stuck in 5th gear. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2004 nissan maxima. while driving approximately 35-40 mph on normal road conditions, the contact applied pressure to the accelerator pedal and the vehicle hesitated. the transmission began to slip intermittently. in addition, whenever the brake pedal was depressed, the engine would rev excessively high and fail to change gears. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for diagnostic testing, but the failure could not be duplicated. the vehicle has not been repaired. the vin was unknown. the failure mileage was 72,000 and current mileage was 72,500.
I bought a 2004 nissan maxima about 6 months ago and the car has some defects that nissan should be held responsible for. about a month after i bought the car i noticed a shaking in the steering when i stepped on the brakes or when i drive faster than 50mph. i took it into the dealership where i bought it from and they diagnosed that the rotors were slightly warped but that this wasn't necessarily a safety issue. recently at 74,000 miles the cars transmission began to fail, slipping from first to second gear and from second to first gear. it jerks aggressively when it shifts and smells like burned rubber. i took it to be serviced for this and found that the transmission fluid was heavily contaminated and there was metallic residue in the transmission pan. the auto specialist determined that the inside of the transmission was burned and that eventually the car will stop working unless i get a new transmission installed. the dealership where i bought the car said that there isn't anything they can do for me and that it isn't there problem that the car i bought from them six months ago doesn't work. it is unfair that i am paying twice the amount of money of the car's worth. the retail value of the vehicle is $10,000 in good condition. *tr
2004 nissan maxima transmission problems only 60000 miles and it slips and jerks, i've talked to many other owners with the same problem. i think it should be recalled and taken care of thanks. *tr
My 04 maxima currently has just over 50,000 miles on it. i have noticed some hard shifts over the past few months, but they had been very intermittent. the other day however i noticed the service engine soon light was on and when accelerating from a stop i realized that i barely had any power! after engine shut off the acceleration was back to normal. the service engine soon light remained on. the code was pulled and reset. p 0797 pressure control solenoid, stuck on. repair cost approximately 4000 dollars. problem outstanding. the struts have also gone bad. problem outstanding. i have also had to replace the battery. the front right rotor is warped and causes steering wheel shim when downhill braking. problem outstanding. my car had begun to idle very low twice and actually died once. problem outstanding. a weld on the heat shield of the catalytic converter has come loose and causes a noticeable vibration when accelerating when cold. this subsides once it's heated up probably due to metal expansion. problem outstanding. i have also replaced the tires due too bad alignment camber on some and also castor i believe it was wearing the tires unevenly. *tr
Transmission sticks from park to reverse and vice-a-versa. *tr
I also seem to be having transmission problems with my 2004 nissan maxima. the car has 62,000 miles on and the problem is just starting to surface. i get a jerking motion when the car shifts from 1st to 2nd or it downshifts from 2nd to 1st. it jerks especially hard when making a turn and the car slows down and picks up speed again. the thing i hate the most is he problem is temperamental. it'll be fine one day and the next it jerks around like crazy. i tried contacting nissan about the problem, but can't get through to anybody who actually might give a hoot. is there anybody who might know where i can directly report this problem and see if something can be done. *tr
Hi, i am so mad to the top of my head that nissan is taking our money and giving low performing vehicle like the maxima se 2004. i just purchased this car (2004 maxima 04) because of my prior nissan that worked excellent for over 10 years. but my new maxima at 54,000 has been jerking on me every time i accelerate from 1st to 2nd gear, brought the car to the dealer and had a rebuilt transmission put on it and frankly the car is still shifting and downshifting hard. nissan has failed to recall this product and stand behind their word as the provider of reliable cars. just the other day while exiting the freeway i almost rear ended somebody because the gears will now downshift properly and it seemed that the car just wanted to keep going. there are hundreds of people having the precise dilemma that i am current facing; just look at www.carsurvey.com thank you for your time and hopefully something will be done for all the people that are putting their life's at risk driving these vehicles with transmission problems. *tr
My 2004 nissan maxima se transmission jerks. it differs from gear to gear and day to day. changed the transmission fluid. however the same problem is still present. *tr
I have 2004 nissan maximum se, i bought the car may 2008 and still driving. i have issue with transmission, it jerks when gear is changing from 2 to 3 and inverse too. the mileage on my car is about 61,000mi, the manufacture warrant is 60,000mi on transmission, however, i took the car to nissan dealer at 59,000mi, and they told me that no problem detected on my transmission and i have to pay $106. the car still jerks on changing gears. this thing disappoints me and it is frustration. please advice. *tr
I purchased a 2004 maxima march of 2007, and now as of recently my car is suffering from transmission problems. i checked other websites to see if other vehicle owners of maximas were having this same problem and i have read so many reviews on the transmission on this car failing. i never would of bought this car if i would of known that the transmission would fail so easily. im very upset and disappointed because to get this transmission rebuilt and put back into my car would cost 2300 dollars. as of right now my car stalls out everyday and sticks in 5th gear until it cools down, but it is constantly slipping when it doesn't go into this protect mode. i really think nissan should be held accountable for this because everyone is having problems with this faulty transmission. *tr
2004 nissan maxima se, transmission problem with jerking and slipping at the 2nd and 3rd gear shifting. i tried to have the problem at a transmission shop twice spend more than $2,000. i found out that transmission problem with 2004 maxima was well known among the mechanics. one time the car briefly stopped on a freeway in a heavy traffic with repeated stop-and-go situation. at that time, i was riding with my son. he was shocked at the car died down on a freeway. i happened to have it started again. however, i do not want to drive the car anymore, because i am afraid of such incident happening again. i do not understand the transmission is not being recalled, even thought the problem is well-known among the part shops and the mechanics. sometimes, the engine revvs up without being engaged and sometimes the card moves very slowly with dead poor. i contacted my mechanics and discussed about the situation. he told me that since the problem is well known and 2004 maxima transmission was only of that year model and nissan changed the transmission model to different one in 2005. nissan knew this problem. i believe that was the reason they are using different transmission model. *tr
