We have classified the 315 complaints from 2004 Nissan Maxima about POWER TRAIN into the following categories.
Car was fine initially then started car which took longer than normal to start and car would not hardly go due to it not being in 1st gear. put the transmission into manual mode and downshifted it to first and got a hard clunk but car would now go under its own power but when you put it back in auto mode it goes straight to 3rd gear. shut car off came back later and started car it started right up and had no issues with transmission. drove it for a bit turned car off for a bit and then went to start again and had the long start and bad shifts again.
When driving the car wil lose power and start jerking badly, cutting back like losing power. it feels as if it is going to stop in the middle of the road. i took it to a well know transmission specialist and was told that this is a problem with several nissan cars including mine. there are several recalls including the 2003 but not my year,i'm confused and it's getting worse. but it's a known issue. i don't understand. my safety is warranted???
Transmission slipping
When in motion the transmission starts to slip in 1 and 2 gear then 4 and 5 gear jumps out of gear then goes in to limp mode
These transmission should of been recalled years ago i always tend to feel a gear jump in the first gears when about to start moving the car or braking. this can be a serious problem when you suddenly need to make a hard stop and the transmission will make a huge jump then stop and with that extra time it takes to jump them stop can be a minor injury if a pedestrian is present or even death.
Whenever i accelerate and the speedometer hits 20 mph the transmission jerks or if i'm going 60 mph on the freeway and start to brake and as my speed is decreasing when the speedometer hits 20 mph it jerks. the transmission must be slipping or have an issue.
The transmission is having issues when changing gears. it starting to hesitate between first gear and second and second to third. my vehicle has only 85,000 miles.
Transmission is stuck in 5th gear when going forward. shifting to reverse or attempting to downshift causes serious jerking (thump). the problem seems to be electronic in nature because restarting the vehicle would fix the problem when it first started occurring. now, restarting the engine does not fix it. nissan has certainly known about the problem for years, since many complaints occurred when the vehicles had fairly low mileage.
I just purchased the vehicle this year as a used vehicle. the vehicle has started to jerking and would not accelerate when i press the gas. it takes at least 1 minute then the rpm shoots up. sometimes i feel that i am going to get whiplash from all the jerking this vehicle does. i should not have to pay for a new transmission when nissan knew about the transmission in these vehicles. they should be hold accountable for their actions and replace all the transmissions in these vehicles and pay other individuals back their money that has already paid to replace their transmission.
Transmission failure at 100k miles
Transmission shift poorly, high rev inbetween shifts, hard down shifts and extremely hard up shifts. very dangerous to drive during icy conditions due to the high rev and hard down shifts that cause uncontrollable loss of driving. *tr
I was pulling out at a stop sign for a left turn when all a sudden the car jerked and i heard a loud bang. this was my transmission letting go. i was stuck in the middle of the road. luckily someone stopped and helped me push the car to the side of the road.
Down shifting in lower gear or upshifting from lower to higher gear loud bang in transmssion
Transmission jerks from p to dr, jerks when down and up shifting. does not seem safe. 73, 0000 miles on vehicle
Transmission failing for second time. transmission was rebuilt/overhauled in march of 2014. mileage at time of rebuild was 111,090 miles. the total cost of said repair was $2,996.00. as of today august 19, 2016 the said mentioned transmission is failing for the second time. the current mileage is approximately 136,xxx miles. the current symptoms while car is in motion are, extremely hard shifts and slipping into upper gears.
Very hard shifting and delay from park to drive, hard shift from park to revers
When auto is in motion when the transmission shifts from low to higher gear engine revs to exceedingly high rpm's as if in nuetral. when letting off the accelerator after slowing the transmission reengages with a violent jerk, very dangerous at interstate speeds
Suddenly after putting my car in drive from reverse after being parked in a parking lot my car jerked so bad i thought my neck was broke. it has continued. i live on a budget and am disabled so i don't have the money to replace or make repairs on my transmission.
What is wrong with nissan? why is there not a recall on the maxima transmissions? something needs to be done about ! not everyone has the money to throw away on a problem that the manufacturer caused. someone should really help solve this issue. cannot drive the car because the transmission is shot. so much for a reliable car for my son to get back and forth to college with. my husband has served this country for close to 25 years and is shocked that nissan is not being made to be accountable for their mistakes.
Transmission gave out on the highway, almost crashed into another vehicle, had to pull off the side of the highway, was written up at work for being late. i had bought the car less than 6 months ago. nissan looked at it said it was fine. 150,000 miles
Tl* the contact owns a 2004 nissan maxima. while driving various speeds, the vehicle shook violently when downshifting and would sometimes stall without warning. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the transmission failed and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 100,000.
Tl* the contact owns a 2004 nissan maxima. the contact stated that while driving at 65 mph, the brake pedal was depressed and the gear shift failed. the check engine warning indicator illuminated continuously. the failure recurred several times. the vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the solenoid needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 188,000.
This is the 4th time the transmission has gone out on this vehicle, and this time it happened on the street. i feel i was very fortunate to not get struck by another vehicle as i got the vehicle home. i purchased the vehicle in 2006, there has to be an issue with the transmission in these vehicles.
Same problem as many others with this horrible transmission. at low throttle, major jolt when shifting from 1st to 2nd gear. just about rips the engine off it's mounts.
Transmission jerks when downshifting on highway and roads, this is a very hard jerk that is very hazardous. i have done research online and there are hundreds of other people having the exact same problems with the same vehicle.
Transmission keeps jerking and stalling out keeps on sliping during shifts
Car lurches forward when coming out of turns, seems like it is getting caught downshifting from what must be 3rd gear down to second..when it catches, the car takes off and accelerates forward quickly. bought the car without a warranty at 79,000 and am shocked this hasn't been made into a recall yet for the extremely dangerous nature of the problem.
Transmission failed at 76,000 miles. nissan would not help in repairs. failed again @ 139,000 miles. safety issue would be when car stops completely and your car could get rear ended and/or when it just all of the sudden slows even when accelerating. all this with little ones in the car!
Vehicle has 91000 miles on it and transmission is failing.(jerks when vehicle takes off from stationary position. front end gives rough ride, after replacing struts.
Transmission failure - i was driving my vehicle on the highway with my 1 year old child when all of a sudden the transmission slipped and failed. i went from doing 50 to 5 on the highway in front of an 18 wheeler. luckily i am a good driver and used my senses to pull over as quickly and safely as possible. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2004 nissan maxima. while accelerating from a complete stop, the transmission exhibited a delayed response without warning. additionally, the transmission jerked violently whenever the gear lever was shifted from the park position into drive. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the transmission sensor failed. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was unavailable.
Tl* the contact owns a 2004 nissan maxima. while reversing the vehicle, the gear jerked, vibrated, and hesitated to shift into drive. the failure occurred on numerous occasions prior to receiving a manufacturer's recall related to the failure. the vehicle was taken to the dealer who indicated that the transmission fluid needed to be replaced. the dealer replaced the transmission fluid and serviced the transmission. the contact stated that the dealer's remedy did not prevent the failure. the vehicle was taken back to the dealer where it was to be diagnosed and repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 112,000.
Transmission problems causes car to jerk very badly, acts as tho it does not want to go. pulling off you will have to make sure no cars are coming at all because if you just go, you're likely to be hit. *tr
Transmission slipping almost ran into another car. this is a major problem i see after doing online research. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2004 nissan maxima. while at a stop light, the vehicle jerked forward without warning. the contact stated that the vehicle jerked when attempting to accelerate or decelerate. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 146,000.
I am the owner of a 2004 nissan maxima w/124,000 miles. i have been experiencing transmission problems since around 115,000 mile. it seems liken there has been a plethora of the same complaints with these transmissions. can someone please explain to me why there has not been a recall on the vehicles? *tr
I took my car in for an inspection, found out that the floor on the passenger side had rusted from the inside out and there was a good size hole. it cost me a couple hundred to fix because it wouldn't pass the inspection. the next thing was the slack timing chain, the car sounds like a truck. i've been told it would cost up to $3000 to fix. then the biggest safety issue is the transmission, this one is really concerning. the jerking, bucking, kicking, clanging, the seconds of hesitation between drive and reverse and then suddenly it engages and the kick could give you whiplash. sometimes i feel like i'm in a rodeo. when the car sits for awhile (overnight) there is no issue with the initial start but once it warms up that's it. you can't accelerate properly once the car slows down, or is making a turn, going around a bend or comes to a stop because it drops out of gear, then there is the hesitation and at that point it just revs, this happens 2 or 3 times before it engages again then there is a massive bang and the car lunges forward, by then the traffic is right under your rear bumper. after this happens a few times there is no more acceleration, the pedal has to be pushed to the floor for the car to move. the engine light came on a month or two ago and hasn't gone off. this is a real dangerous, safety issue. a few days ago another issue appeared, i cannot open the driver side door with the remote door opener or the electronic door opener on the inside of the door. at this point i've read many complaints about these issues, they are all manufacture problems but the timing chain and transmission is the biggest when it comes to safety because you do not know when the car will stop. why hasn't nissan done a recall????? there are enough complaints.
The car is jerking is while driving. it is also revving while driving. *tr
The car started bucking when is downshift into a lower gear and it jerks and it's slips. i have a hundred 100 thousand miles on the speedometer.
My 2004 nissan jerks at shifting speed of 15-23 mile per hr. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2004 nissan maxima. while driving at any speed, the vehicle jerked forward without warning. the vehicle jerked when attempting to accelerate or decrease in speed. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was approximately 105,000.
Taking off from intersection car shifts erratically. sometime it will slip in intersections and cause safety issues. slips, shifts erratically on highway as well. *tr
My 2004 maxima is hesitating to shift an im disable living on 700 dollars a month. my daughter is in college driving this car in traffic an im afraid she is going to get hurt making left turns in this car. there have been close calls with me driving it,but i live in south ga. where people are more sensible toward others. this is a serious problem an someone is going to get killed from these faulty transmission. i have to get a used transmission under 1500 dollars that i had to borrow to keep my child safe. nissan should be held countable for this. i paid 19000 dollars for this car and your screw up is costing me to put a 2002-2003 transmission in my car. the transmission shops in albany ga. are thanking nissan for their 2500-3000 contributions that the 2004-2005 maxima owners are spending with them and my transmission owner made this statement to me. aatco transmission of albany who states he has redone so many valve bodies on these cars. i guess some actions will be taken when people that does not has the fundings to fix this problem themselves. i had to drive my car like this until i found the money an it broke all my motor mounts from the jerking and hard shifting. *tr
Whenever i shift to reverse the car pauses and then jerks, same jerk behavior happens whenever i shift from reverse to drive. sometimes when i am driving i can feel the car hesitating when switching gears. i have been told the transmission is going bad. *tr
When driving the car, it slams into 2nd gear and/or hesitates shifting into it. when idle and shifting from reverse to drive or from drive to reverse, there is a 2-3 delay and the car jerks and slams into that gear. the jerk is aggressive and can cause in injury. the car does not shift smoothly and constantly jerks and slams into gear. after having the vehicle diagnosed, they mechanics say it will either need a new valve body or new transmission on a car with 112k miles on it. this is a common issue for 2004-2006 nissan maxima owners and is very dangerous and expensive. *tr
While pulling out into a enter section of a main road in morning traffic my transmission went out causing me to almost be t-boned. this needs to be looked into before someone gets hurt or worst. *tr
[xxx] starting it up takes 2-3x with putting the gas pedal all the way to the floor, then it jerks into gear. while driving it just stalls out which is very scary & dangerous and it goes from drive to 5th gear no 1-4, and it hesitates & when driving up to a red light for example, then it starts to conk out. also no pick up from an idle position, i just bought it 9/17/14 and called dealer and he told him it wont pass inspection "check engine light on" constant. it feels like transmission isn't in proper gear (5th) just stalls while driving. everyone behind me leans on the horn and yells at me when it stalls out in drive. im afraid to drive it. the dealer (north shore auto mall, lynn ma 01905, mgr name [xxx], real jerk !!) said they did a 21 point inspection, but that's bs, they would have caught that seeing that they are in the business and knew they sold me a car w/bad transmission/alternator. now they don't want to know me. please give me some resources that you know of to remedy the problem. i could go on & on about the treatment i had to endure but that wont help hopefully you can regards [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr
The 2004 nissan maxima suffers from a common issue within the transmission. the valve body causes premature transmission failure within these cars. this results in sudden hard jerking / delayed shifting when changing gears in their automatic transmission. this means loss of control occurs when the transmission finally catches itself since the car will continue to rev higher than normal. overtime the car will experience slow acceleration, due to the car being thrown into a safety mode unexpectedly which keeps the car in a "5th" gear state. also, because of the codes this faulty part will throw, a vehicle with this transmission will not pass certain state emissions. repairs are upwards to thousands of dollars, and unfortunately replacing it with the same part will only be a temporary fix. this is a major safety concern because it dramatically reduces the response time, and puts the driver at serious risk. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2004 nissan maxima. the contact stated while driving approximately 10 mph, the transmission began to jerk violently. the contact mentioned that the failure would occur when down shifting and coming to a complete stop. the vehicle had not been diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the issue. the approximate failure mileage was 56,078.
Car have a hard jerk when shifting. also when slowing down and trying to accelerate my car jerk real hard like someone kicked me from behind. *tr
