We have classified the 315 complaints from 2004 Nissan Maxima about POWER TRAIN into the following categories.
I have a 2004 nissan maxima with 61,038 miles on it. as i am driving, my car will jump sometimes lightly & at other times very hard. if i put the car in reverse and then put the gear back into drive, i will have to wait for the car to jump into gear. when i brake, the car will jump before stopping. it feels like the engine is slipping. at times, the car jumps so hard that i see other people look my way. this can happen at any time, day or night, hot or cold... the car would have been driven for hrs., so yes it is warmed up. in june of 2008, i took the car to a transmission shop & i was told i needed 2 transmission mounts and a transmission flush which would cost over $900.00. i took it to my mechanic and i had it done for a little over $600.00. a few days later i had the same problem. i took the car back to my mechanic 3 more times & they could not find anything wrong. in september of 2008, i took the car to a nissan dealer & it passed all of the diagnostic tests. i was very disappointed. on 2/6/2009, i took the car to a nissan dealer & i was told that i needed a transmission which will cost me $4507.00,i need a right engine mount which will cost $361.00, both front struts are making a chucking noise...$832.00, lower control arm bushings are broken...$809.00. all of these repairs because of the car's jerking. the mechanic told me that if i get this done, the car should last about 6 to 7 more yrs. i had to pay $98.00 for the dealership to trouble shoot, when the amount is usually $65.00 for inspection at other places. i cannot afford to buy a new transmission, i would be better off trying to by something else (no nissan) to drive. i still have payments on this car, so that is not even being realistic. i am fed up with this car & there is nothing that i can do about it. i only drive the car to work & places that i must go to, because i am scared to rely ...
Car was hesitating. when stepping on gas car wouldn't go past 40mph sensors needed to be replaced check engine light was on. sensors were replaced but then car started jerking when in park shifting to drive or vice versa. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2004 nissan maxima. while driving 30 mph uphill, the vehicle suddenly failed to shift into gear. the rpm's increased into the red zone on the instrument panel gauge. the gear final changed and the vehicle began to jerk badly. the vehicle eventually settled back into gear and proceeded up the hill. the failure was intermittent. the vehicle was taken to the dealer and they stated that the motor mounts were the cause of the failure. the dealer replaced the motor mounts. currently, the transmission is causing the same failure. the vin was unknown. the failure mileage was 62,000.
Car jerks. nissan dealer states i need a new transmission and motor mounts. $4,000.00. *tr
2004 nissan maxima se automatic transmissions buckles and bumps when switching from reverse to drive. the warmer the engine the harder the bump. on occasion it is so bad it feels like the car was rear ended at about 10-15 mph. it has been in the dealer's shop for a week and they can't eliminate the problem but have already billed me $1400.
Tl*the contact owns a 2004 nissan maxima. the contact stated that the vehicle jerks when the vehicle is shifted from first to second gear. the failure occurs everyday. the vehicle jerks extremely bad when approaching a stop. the vehicle was taken to the dealer, but they could not determine the cause of the failure. they performed a transmission flush at the contact's expense. the current mileage was over 80,000.
Transmission simply died at 3.5 years and 68k miles. nissan would not cover via warranty. and, they only respond to customer inquiries ever 48 hours. you may not contact nissan. victory nissan in chantilly, va does not know how to program codes for transmission. *tr
I would like to place a complaint on the 2004 nissan maxima se. this car like many other 2004 maximas, has a transmission problem.. it jerks from 1st to 2nd and from 3rd to 4th gear. also when not making a complete stop, i.e. turning a corner, this problem will also occur. usually, as i have read on other peoples complaints, and also my own experience, this happens after reaching the 75k mark. i would like for you to please take this in consideration, and take a look in to what's going on with nissan's transmission problem, as they already know that there is a problem... they have not agreed to state that there is a problem, but they do have transmissions in stock at several dealers for this make, model and year. so i beg you please help us resolve this problem... thank you kindly. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2004 nissan maxima. whenever the contact switches the gear shifter from reverse to drive, the vehicle hesitates before changing into the correct gear. also, whenever the contact accelerates from first to second gear, the vehicle begins to stall. during deceleration, the brake pedal loses pressure. the vehicle has not been diagnosed by the dealer. the current mileage was 99,000 and failure mileage was 80,000.
Been having numerous transmissions issues with the car over the past 2 to 3 years. already to had to replace the transmission once, now starting to have the same issues again. lots of jerking from gear to gear, lots of difficulty getting the car to up shift or down shift; car locking in 4th or 5th gear and will not shift out of that gear. can not believe there has not been a recall based on the number of internet complaints on this issue. *tr
Driving in my nissan 2004 maxima se the transmission started jerking every time hate this car now. *tr
My 2004 nissan maxima was stalled on the road twice in the middle of the road while driving around june 2008 with a mileage of 54,500. before the stalls happened, the vehicle jerked when shifting from first to second gear and vs versa. at the time of the stalling, the check engine light went on. i brought it back to nissan dealer, thinking it is still within the power train warranty. the dealer however told me the warranty does not cover this problem. it costs me over $600.00. the report said that camshaft position sensor is malfunctioning. *tr
The transsmission has had a constant jerk between 1st 2nd and 3rd gear. always at low speeds. i have had the trans cooler seals replaced 3 times then the cooler its self. still acts up. *tr
I purchased a used 2004 nissan maxima. a couple of weeks after driving the vehicle i noticed that it shifted extremely hard between first and second as well as from reverse to drive. after researching this make of vehicle i have found several other owners having the same problem. i have had the dealer look at the problem and he determined my transmission is going out. it will need a new one...approximately $3,000. on top of this..the engine has developed a tick. the car only has about 90,000 miles on it. a nissan transmission should last much longer. come to find out...despite the other owners complaints...nothing has been done to address this recurring problem. *tr
I have a 2004 nissan maxima with a little over 90,000 miles. it is come to my attention that my vehicle is not the only 2004 nissan maxima with this problem. it slips out of gear and makes the vehicle jump as if someone rear ended me. it shifts really hard from !st to 2nd even 3rd when i drive throughout the city. it does it only when the car warms up and it does it consistently. i've done a transmission flush which was required by the dealership and it stopped doing it for about 5 miles into the ride, then it began doing it. i went online and found thousands and thousands of people with the same vehicle and with the same problem. they all have done all the transmission repairs possible and the problem still maintains. i refuse to spend $4,000.00 on a new transmission because i do not have that money. these transmissions need to be recalled. *tr
I own a 2004 nissan maxima for almost three years now. i bought the car with 70,000 mi. and in very good shape at the time. three months went by and i started noticing my transmission slipping and shifting very hard. i took it to the local nissan dealership for them to check my transmission and told me they did not see anything wrong with it but suggested a transmission flush. because of their high price for a transmission flush i took it to jiffy lube. the vehicle shifted smoothly for about 30 min. into the drive then the slipping and hard shifts continued. i went online to research this problem and found out that i was not the only person with this exact problem. i found this website (http://www.carsurvey.org/reviews/nissan/maxima/r61092/comments/page-16/) and came across thousands of nissan owners with the exact transmission problems. after learning this i was convinced that it was a defect and nissan needs to recall the transmission. i am never going to buy a nissan car ever again! i have this expensive car note for the next four years and the transmission was defected ever since it was put in the car! my warranty was expired before this started happening. this should be looked into and an investigation needs to start. it is so unfair to me and the other people who are going through this. please help!
When accelerating, my 2004 nissan maxima se's transmission 'bucks' when shifting between gears. this behavior occurs randomly (i.e., not all the time) and has occurred when decelerating also. there are numerous online posts about this exact behavior with owner's spending a lot of money for repairs/diagnostics that do not resolve this issue. nissan is aware of the issue because some of these repairs have taken place at nissan service centers, and nissan consumer affairs has been contacted about this issue. obviously, owners are looking for a recall by nissan at this point that will 100% resolve the issue. *tr
Transmission acting up on my 04 nissan maxima. i see i'm not the only one having these issues but hundreds of other people as well and nothing is done about it. i'm having hard shifts and mis-shifts. i honestly think that a class action lawsuit should be made against nissan for not doing something about this. *tr
Very rough shift after deceleration going into acceleration at 20 to 35 mph. it feels as if i have been rearended and has a loud sound mimicking same. it varies greatly on occurrence. weeks can go by with nothing, then it will occur regularly for a period of time. this has been occurring off and on since 2008 (approx 65k - 80k miles). the car now has 113k miles. the transmission fluid has been changed, engine mounts fixed - all to no avail. the last resort is to have the transmission replaced which is half the value of the car. nissan has refused to fix the vehicle at no cost to me. *tr
Started noticing at 60k miles - the engine revs and the transmission jerks between 1st and 2nd gear. especially noticeable after exiting a freeway and slowing down almost to a stop, then accelerating again. happens more when the car is warmed up or has been running at higher speeds. i have not had it looked at yet, but see enough postings about this problem that i'd like to wait until nissan makes some effort to do something. if it gets bad enough i will have to take it in and hope my extended wty. covers the work - and that what is done actually fixes it. from what i have read, the chances of the latter are slim, and nothing short of a new transmission is likely to fix it. *tr
1. around 80,000 miles i noticed hard jerking/stopping when the car shifted from first to second gear and second to first. i took it to my mechanic and he suggested a transmission flush. unfortunately the problem still persists. 2. the problem occurs quite often. everyday and every time i stop or slow the vehicle down i can feel the jerking motion. the problem becomes worse in hot weather or when the engine is warm. 3. i have brought it to my mechanic and he suggested a transmission flush, which was done at the nissan dealership. the problem still persists. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2004 nissan maxima. when the contact placed the vehicle into drive, it began to jerk. there were no warning indicators illuminated on the instrument panel. the vehicle was taken to the dealer and they stated that the transmission needed to be flushed. the vehicle was repaired at the cost of $300. after two months, the vehicle began to jerk again when it was placed into drive. the dealer stated that the transmission failed again and needed to be replaced. no repairs were made. the vehicle was taken to a local repair shop and the transmission was rebuilt at the cost of $3,500. the manufacturer stated that no compensation would be made because the vehicle exceeded the mileage. the vin was unavailable. the failure mileage was 80,000.
Purchased car in march 2008 transmission jerks on acceleration from 1st to 2nd gear and deceleration from 2nd to 1st. took car to nissan dealer said to replace transmission. car only has 80000 miles on it. *tr
I have a 2004 nissan maxima and the transmission jerks violently between 1st and 2nd gear. i have read hundreds or complaints from people experiencing the same thing. there really needs to be a recall and i'm confused as to why this hasn't occured already. i bought a nissan because i believed in the product. i believed in the honesty and integrity of nissan as a brand and have always raved about the great cars and trucks they create. sadly this issue leads me to believe i was wrong.*cw
Transmission slips between gear 1 & 2 . mfg said i need new transmission. only had 78000 when problem first started. could never duplicate problem at service shop. checked online and saw this is a common problem with 2004 maxima se. *tr

I never drive my 2004 nissan maxima se hard, and i am having transmission problems when the car is shifting from 1st to 2nd. it tends to slip 40% of the time. i have had the transmission flushed, as well as being told me transmission was fine by the nissan dealership. this is a disappointment knowing i spent this much money on the car and having problems. the car only has 55k miles on it. *tr
Car is jerking when brakes are fully applied. almost bad enough to get whiplash. car was purchased sept. 2006 with 64,000 miles. car ran good for about 1 year. after owning the car for about 18 months, the jerking started. i took the car to the nissan dealer in my area. they told me i needed to flush the transmission. i had that done. the very next day the car started jerking again. as mentioned in another complaint, jerking starts once fluids are warm. i took the car back, they look at it and told me they couldn't duplicate the problem therefore, they couldn't tell me what was wrong. i asked them if it could be the transmission. service manager told me that it wasn't the transmission. i took the car home. i was a little frustrated by now. one month later, i took the car back in. i had the service writer ride out with me. he felt the jerking. i asked him if it could be a broken mount. he wrote broken mount down on his notepad. i left the car with nissan. nissan's service writer called me back the next day and wouldn't you know it, he said it was a broken mount. i told them to go ahead and fix it. they did. i paid and took the car home. guess what? car started jerking again. i contacted nissan and they basically told me they couldn't do anything. 6 months later, the car is still jerking away. i took the car back to nissan. i told service manager about the jerking. he came out for a test drive and told me that is was the transmission. said that he had seen a lot of 2004 maximas coming back during the last of 2008 with the same complaint. he told me to clean it up and sell it to carmaxx before it gave all the way out. he said that carmaxx wouldn't know the transmission was having problems he told me they didn't check transmission before. he said it cost 250.00 to drop pan to check tranny. please people, lets flood nissan usa with your complaints. they will have ...
Our 04 nissan maxima se was purchased at 23k miles from dealership and we purchased the extended warranty for coverage up to 80k. it seems that right at 82k we started experiencing transmission issues that were extremely noticeable -i can say that right around 60k we had slight transmission concerns but the dealership did diagnose as such, although my wife strongly suggested to them that it seemed like something was wrong with the transmission and gears jerking/shifting. now, at 98k our transmission has gone out -the car does not shift into gears at all and my wife was stranded on the highway in connecticut (we live in new jersey) when she experienced this -no warning except for the engine light coming on and car's rpm revving up to 5 & 6, she exited to let car cool down and it would not move into any gear once restarted. we really feel that nissan is aware of this defective transmission and is refusing to stand behind their substandard product! *tr
I have a nissan maxima 04 that i started having transmission problems last year. when i travel down hill it slams into gear when it down shifts. i also noticed that when i shift from reverse to drive it pauses than shifts hard and loud into drive. in april of 08 i took it in to the dealer to have it checked (59000 miles) while still under warranty. they found no problem and returned it to me. on the invoice they have 47,000 miles at the time of inspection. i also have a invoice for 07 that shows mileage at 47,000. obviously, some one noted the wrong mileage. in talking to the dealer they are estimating new transmission between $3500-$4000 dollars. i am astonished that nissan would put out a product that they know is faulty. what can we do to resolve this? *tr thank you,
Tl*the contact owns a 2004 nissan maxima. the contact noticed that when the transmission warms, it is difficult to change gears. when he shifted from drive into reverse, the vehicle made a loud noise. the dealer discovered that the transmission was discolored and stated that a new one would be needed at the cost of $3,900. a report was filed with the manufacturer and the failure was investigated for two weeks. the manufacturer concluded that they would not assist with the repair. the failure mileage was 56,000 and current mileage was 57,000.

Maxima 2004 se with less than 77,000 miles is experiencing transmission problems. from what i see online there seem to be a trend of this. shift slipping between 1st and 2nd gear. the dealership won't recall it until enough people complain about this issue. *tr
