We have classified the 315 complaints from 2004 Nissan Maxima about POWER TRAIN into the following categories.
Transmission always slips had it remanufactured 2700 dollars later same problem. this leads up to and causes other problems especially since transmission needs to be worked on every 3 months hands are always taking out putting back together not to good for the car this prob jus doesn't go away. sensors went bad now timing chain. problem after problem but to me and mechanics i have talked to all leads back to the defective transmissions these 04 maximas have. *tr
My nissan maxima transmission jerks very hard while switching gears. there's also major slipping between some gears and the vehicle is becoming very unsafe to drive. the only suggested solution is to replace the transmission which nissan should pay for because of their defective work. i have paid too much money for the car only to be forced to pay for a new transmission when i didn't destroy the one i have. please help! *tr
Starting almost a year ago, around 90,000 miles, my 2004 nissan maxima began jerking very hard when going from 1st to 2nd gear and even more when going from reverse to drive. it happens every now and then, mostly when the car is warmed up. feels like i've been hit from the back by a train! the brakes also do a weird jerk when slowing down now. and when i release the gas pedal to turn a corner, etc...then press the gas again, it jerks a lot then too. i never know when it's going to happen, but it's more often now and i just wonder when i'll be left on the road stranded. *tr
I have 04 nissan maxima and it have only 47078 miles on it. the car is having transmission problem from 1 to 2 gear is hard shift. i have seen many people who have same kind of problem with transmission. there is no incident crash with this car. they change the filer and other stuff they also change the fluid. *tr
Myself and other owners of 2004 nissan maximas encounter premature transmission failure. the transmissions in these cares jerk when going into each gear and downshifting. at any given time, the car may hesitate. nissan dealers only solution to this problem is transmission flush. the transmission flush only subsides the problem for a short period of time. at anytime, the car can delay and cause an accident of some sort. *tr
A few months ago my transmission started to slip in 1st an 2nd gear.when i would run errands for more than hour it would really start to act up. now i can not drive for 30 minutes without it seriously slipping gears hard. i can only drive the car a few miles because of this. i took the car to a shop an was told that the valve body needs to be replaced with a rebuilt transmission mechanic also stated that the valve body should not be a wearable component and should have been a recall on it. now the car sits most of the time because i can not afford to fix it. please help me. *tr
I have nissan maxima 2004 that has a series of problems since i bought 2 years ago from nissan dealer. the most important is recent transmission problem that left me sitting in traffic. transmission in my car is not able to reach 2nd gear! this vehicle has been in nissan shop twice and they are not able to fix the problem ! the transmission problem is a safety issue if it fails to provide sufficient acceleration that will allow you to get out of harm's way or to safely maneuver in traffic !!! i just realized that many 2004 maxima owners have exactly same transmission problems. something must be done! thank you *tr
I recently bought a used maxima 2004 when i first drove it with 84000 miles on it. it was fine but not but a few days later it started to jerk from 1st to 2nd and sometime into 3rd. i happensabout 50% of the time in just one day! i has not yet been replaced due to the fact that i have read so many other problems with the same make and model. *tr
2004 nissan maxima transmission issues 1st n 2nd shift hard, 2nd n 3rd slipping shimmy in the steering while driving. *tr
I purchased a 2004 nissan maxima in mid 2006 as a pre-owned vehicle. the problem began nearly a year ago when while driving on the freeway, it would automatically get stuck on 5th gear. i tried downshifting manually and the gear would be stuck on 5th gear. in order to temporarily fix the problem i would have to pull over, shut the engine off and put the gear in neutral in order to restart the car. at times it would be stuck on 5th gear, other times the transmission would be back to normal. when driving on city streets, the vehicle would jerk between gears. took the car back to the dealership and they suggested that i replace a sensor in the transmission. i had the sensor replaced, now the vehicle jerks when changing gears. my neighbor across the street had the same car and also had the same problem and they had a choice to replace that transmission for a new transmission at a cost of $5000. my neighbor instead replaced the maxima for a different car. *tr
I recently purchased a 2004 nissan maxima. i love the car, besides the fact i have had more problems with it in the last few months . this is extremely frustrating. i have always assumed nissan's were dependable cars. i know i purchased it used, but the problems i am having should not be occurring at 90,000 miles. really disappointing. transmission was slipping so i took it to nissan dealer paid for a flush 200 dollars picked it up next day and transmission went out. now i have to pay for whole cost of transmission plus other reprogramming computer modules and cam sensors. this is not the first maxima and something needs to be done to nissan because they know this is a big problem with alot of 2004 maximas. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2004 nissan maxima. when shifting gears the vehicle will hesitate and then down-shift. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for inspection. the technician stated that the transmission needed to be replaced at an expense of $4,000.00. the current and failure mileages were 140,000. she contacted the manufacturer, and was advised that she could have the fuel system flushed. she will trade the vehicle. the current and failure mileages were 140,000. the vin was not available.
I have a 2004 nissan maxima with very bad transmission issues...slipping-jerking-jumping-kicking between 1-2nd gear. it is very embarassing to ride anyone in it and the dealership want over 4 thousand to fix help. is there a recall on these transmissions anyone know. *tr
I have a 2004 nissan maxima and just like everyone else my transmission went out after paying the nissan dealer to run diagnostic and flush the system. after just 2 hours from picking it up it completely went out. nissan will not even offer to fix the transmission or provide atleast half of their cost since it is their crappy product that is going bad on everyone's 04 cars. my car started with the jerking into gear and getting worse when it heats up. i wish someone would have the guts to make nissan pay every maxima car owner time , frustration, towing, repair, and a new transmission. what we deserve!!!! *tr
Car is slipping in and out of gear. hesitates from reverse into drive and then it slips and bangs from 1st to 2nd and into 3rd. this past saturday the car actually died on me and now it's stuck in 5th gear and non drivable which is unacceptable. was told it would be around 4000 to rebuild which is money i don't have and i took car of this car. transmissions should not fail with only 93,000 miles on it. there are thousands of complaints about this particular make and model year of the maxima. nissan needs to investigate and recall these cars because at this point it's a problem that needs to be handled now. i hope it doesn't take someone getting in a really bad accident because of this problem. *tr
The car started jerking when shifting gears. it stalls out as you accelerate from 20 to 30 miles per hour. this is dangerous. after researching, similar models and year of my car are all complaining of the same problem. this is not just wear and tear. this model car needs to be recalled before any injuries are reported. the failure began to be noticed after the car warms up. it started occurring numerous times and then started slipping as it shifts gears. took it to shop to see what could be done to fix this failure. nissan needs to fix this issue. every car in this year and model is having this problem, but no one is acknowledging the issue. *tr
At about 35000 miles i noticed my vehicle jerking (initially it was mild, lately it has been violent jerks) when shifting gears. i was told by nissan service tech's that i needed my trans. fluid drained and filled at approx. 45k miles even though i had just had it done at 38k ( unbeknownst to them) after both fluid changes, the problem just worsened. last tuesday, my vehicle appeared to get stuck in 2nd gear while decelerating/ accelerating on the freeway. i nearly ran off of the road. i took my car in to the dealer today and they are now saying i need new motor mounts. i have read hundreds of complaints about the exact same problem in the exact same car. nissan needs to acknowledge that the transmissions used in the 2004 maximas are bad and recall/replace them before someone dies. *tr
I too have a 2004 maxima. i maintain the car at the dealer,. while driving, the gears will slips out and at times sticks at the 5th gear the only way it comes out of the 5th gear is by turning off the car, sit for several minutes while the engine cools and starting again. i was told the problem with the gear shifting is i need to change the valve assembly. it was changed and 2day later the same problem existed. i took it back and i am told i need to change the at solenoid assembly and or replace the transmission. this is apparently a know problem with the 04 maximas and something needs to be done about it!! *tr
1)transmission jerking/slipping 2) occurs everytime i drive. my wife is now afraid to drive car 3) nissan will not fix. i informed them the issue began intermittently before warranty was up. issue has now gotten worse. please look at all the similar complaints on the following website. http://www.carsurvey.org/reviews/nissan/maxima/r61092/comments/. *tr
I having major transmission jerking from my 2004 nissan maxima. the jerking appears to happen when the car get hot. *tr
2004 nissan maxima's transmission jerks when shifting into drive and when downshifting from 2nd to 1st gear. *tr
I have a 2004 nissan maxima that is having transmission problems. it doesn't properly engage when upshifting, usually allowing the rpm's to rev up and then slams into gear jerking the car forward. i don't know of any events that have contributed to this failure. this occurs every time the car is warmed up. i have had the transmission looked at by a nissan dealer and a private transmission company. both say it needs to be replaced. the private dealer attributes the problem to a lack of cooling lines going into the transmission and believed this would be a common problem. after looking online, it is obvious that i am not a unique case. people across the country are complaining about the same issue. i'm concerned that the transmission malfunction will lead to an accident, but cannot afford to replace the car or the transmission. according to several websites, replacing the transmission is only a temporary fix, as this problem seems to be a design flaw, so any replacement will be susceptible to the same failure. *tr
The transmission on my 04 nissan maxima is bad. it keeps slipping when shifting from gear 3 to 2 or 2 to 3. it jerks very heavily and is not good. *tr
My problem seems to be the same one that thousands of people are having. i am a used car dealer and have bought (3) 2004 nissan maximas sl. every one of them has had the same problem. i know any sensible person reading this complaint would simply say "idiot, stop buying nissans!!! but i was trying to give our auto industry the benefit of the doubt that since so many people had the exact same problem that they would at least realize and admit that , maybe its not the world that has the problem. it's the 2004 maxima transmissions. when the car gets warm, the transmission slips in between 20 and 30 mph. it also jerks and delays (once it gets hot) when going into gear. several credible transmission repair shops (i.e. mr. transmission), have traced it back the same thing. the faulty valve body in the transmission. now as a voice of the people and after reading complaint after complaint after complaint ; surely there has to be some non-biased agency, watch dog, or authority that is not going to let these car-making bullies rip all of these people off especially when they have been made aware of this design flaw. we understand that they have a business to run and that they can't just stay in business fixing every single complaint that arouses but this is not a quick fix for the consumers and it is costing hard working consumers millions of dollars in repairs. please somebody help the working class. *tr
My 2004 nissan maxima has become a safety hazard in that it jerks violently while shifting gears and losses power during acceleration. i was on the highway and was very close to being involved in a serious accident with a semi when my car suddenly slowed and when i applied pressure on the pedal it jerk violently like someone had rear-ended me. there was a semi right behind me approaching at a rapid speed. because i hadn't applied my brakes he didn't realize my car would suddenly slow down in front of him. i was terrified to say the least. i made calls to nissan but they could care less and will assume no responsibility for their faulty equipment. after doing significant research in assessing the issue and trying to find a solution i found that many other people who own this particular model have the same problem. i was also told that mechanics have done many things like new or rebuilt transmissions, engine mounts replaced, fuel filter replacements, etc. none of which have solved the problem. *tr
My 2004 nissan maxima was jerking when going from 1st gear to 2nd gear and when i would slow down. i took it to the dealer where they said it was my motor mounts. i spent $500 replacing them and it still did it. when i took back to the dealer they said it was my transmission. now i just forked out $4000 for a new transmission. i went and online and saw over 1,000 complaints for the same make and model saying that their cars were doing the same thing. i think there should be a recall on transmissions on my year, make, and model. *tr
Transmission jerking motion when shifting from 1st to 2nd on acceleration and jerking motion when shifting from 2nd to 1st gear when braking. *tr
Transmission (automatic) problem: car slams into gear when changing from 'park' into 'drive'. also there's a delay when going from 2nd to 3rd gear in which engine revs up but no gear change. *tr
This is a very big problem with 2004 nissan maxima se automatic trans. there are complaints all over the internet regarding transmission jerking and slipping on these particular cars. nissan will not do anything to correct this problem. my maxima jerks really hard while transitioning from reverse to first while backing out. also jerks suddenly while down shifting on freeway or streets from 4 to 3 rd gear. i am really nervous driving this car it jerks often and to replace the transmission will cost about $4000. this car is 5 yrs old. please advise. *tr
I have a 2004 maxima se that has had a series of problems since i bought it brand new in 2003. i am very concerned about the transmission problem that almost left my husband sitting in rush hour traffic yesterday. this vehicle has been in the shop too many times to count. i recently saw a blog which indicated that this is a problem for thousands of 2004 nissan maxima owners. nissan has done nothing to compensate owners of this car when a recall is clearly indicated. i bought a nissan hoping to own it for several years and knowing that nissan has a good reputation. i worry about the safety of my family traveling in this vehicle and feel that nissan should take responsibility for doing a recall on this vehicle. please help owners like me who have invested a lot of time, money, and tears with this issue. *tr
Problem with the transmission. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2004 nissan maxima. while driving between 5-20 mph, the vehicle hesitated to shift into second gear. the vehicle tends to jerk and makes a loud noise when the failure is occurring. the contact feels that a recall should be issued due to the numerous complaints that are posted on the internet. the current and failure mileages were 62,000. updated 07/28/09 *bf when driving from 1st to 2nd gear, there was a hard shift. updated 07/30/09.*jb
Beginning of this week, march 30, 2009, my 2004 nissan maxima had a situation when i began to drive (my car is an automatic), the transmission appeared to be struggling to reach 2nd gear. although i only work 1.8 miles from my home, i could feel the "difference" in the transmission from any other time. i have 63,000 miles on my car and for a five year old car, that is very low. i maintain the vehicle accordingly and about 8 months ago, i had the transmission fluid flushed, etc. the second day (today), i started up the car, put it in drive and quickly noticed it was going to strain itself into 2nd gear. once it did, there was a hard jerk in getting there. i immediately drove the car to my home, parked it and made an appointment for it to be checked out tomorrow morning. then i went online to search for any nissan 2004 transmission problems such as mine and found a lot of web-sites that people have described the exact happenings that occurred to my vehicle. this does not seem to be an isolated incident. something is seriously defective with at least the 2004 transmissions. many people's comments always stated that there's occurred right after 60,000 miles. my car has not been driven hard and is well maintained. i read also about 2 other items that occurred to my vehicle. one is the drivers power window will not close up and stay closed when the button is pushed. i discovered a way to get the window closed by holding the button in the up position, turn off the car and open the door, while keeping your finger on the power up button. secondly, people wrote about a ac refrigerant hose having leaks and needing to be replaced by several other owners. mine also had this problem some time back. the most important issue to me is this transmission failing right after 60,000 miles. it mentions that when they put it on a machine to test, it shows nothing is wrong, which obviously it is. nissan has told people they don't know exactly what the problem is either. *tr
I purchased a nissan maxima with approx 90,000 miles in june 2007. i purchased an extended warranty, however after less than a year the transmission was slipping very bad. it needed to be replaced, so the warranty only provided a transmission with equal value at the date of purchase, so they installed a 90,000 mile transmission, this transmission is now slipping out of gear bad. i think their should be a recall because i have read a ton of complaints online about this same issue. *tr
2004 nssan maxima has slipping transmission causing lack of acceleration when needed most when merging on to interstate, etc. this is a very common complaint among these car owners and needs to addressed with nissan. i have tried only to be told i need to replace my transmission. it is faulty engineering, bad valve body, yet they will not stand behind it with a recall. *tr
6 speed manual transmission: pushing in clutch became rough, thought it needed a clutch. not so, found out that there is a transmission industry-wide known design flaw in the nissan six speed manual transmission; three little brass rings between gears #3 & #4. the demand for the repair kit from japan is so great, it takes 2 weeks to get. 5,000 miles out of warranty, nissan would not discuss. *tr
2004 nissan maxima se has a bad transmission that puts the car into gear after 2 seconds of the engine racing. it pops into gear by itself after 2 seconds with a bang. the transmission jerks around 1st and 2nd gear while accelerating/decelerating. it does this when heated up and for cars around 75,000 miles. this can cause major life threatning accidents and deaths. this is not the only car with the problem. there are 200 more cars on www.carsurvey.org with the same exact issues. i called in 1-800-nissan-1 but they refuse to address the problem and reimburse my money. i want my money back. it cost me $2300 and it is still not fixed yet. please call in and file a law suite for not recalling the car. *tr
I have a 2004 nissan maxima se with 51039 miles and recently i noticed that the car jerking changing gears so i took it to the dealership to have it looked at and they advice me that i needed to have the motor mount replace, ac line is leaking need replacement and transmission flushed. i did all that and the problem still happens so i took it back to the dealership and this time they advice me that the transmission will need to be replace. they gave me a estimate of 4500 for the repair. after researching on this issue to see if the transmission replacement will fix the problem and i am a little worry that it might not. because i got the transmission replaced from the dealership and i drove it for no more then 3 miles and the problem came back. i took it back to the dealership to have to have it look at again. i think that if nissan does not look into this it will cause a major accident if the transmission fails or that sudden jerk will cause panic is the driver and cause the driven to step on the gas and hit someone in front of them. please please advice nissan for recall. *tr
Nissan maxima transmission jerks between 1st and 2nd gears. everytime the car is placed on drive or reverse or neutral you can feel the jerk and loud clunk noise from the transmission. being reading all the reviews on this problems and it seems that the transmission needs to be replaced. *tr
I have a nissan maxima 2004 and the transmission slips between 3rd and 4th gear. i was reading on the internet about several owners of my make, model and year maxima that are having the same issue. acceleration when come to a stop and transmission slip. *tr
My transmission on my nissan 2004 maxima went. i will not change gears. for a car that is 5 years old this should not happen. i had cars that are older and that don't fail like this one does. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2004 nissan maxima. the contact stated that the transmission would shift hard when shifting from park to drive. the transmission was previously replaced twice by the manufacturer for the failure. the contact was concerned that the failure could potentially cause a crash. the manufacturer was contacted and would not provide any further assistance. the vehicle was not repaired any further. the failure mileage was 59,875.
I own a 2004 nissan maxima. i took it to the dealer and told them i was having transmission trouble, they told me the car was fine, but i'm a mechanic so i knew something was wrong. the car recently had cut off a few times while driving. i had it checked and i was told that i needed a camshaft sensor. i replaced it but i still noticed problems with the trans, rough shifting from 1st to 2nd and to 3rd, and rough down shifting from 3rd to 2nd. the car would loose power, which i noticed it was shifting to fifth gear and staying there until the car was cut off and some what reset. i also noticed some tapping coming from the engine compartment. i am hoping for a recall on the transmission because there are many others with the same problem. *tr
2004 nissan maxima. the transmission started shifting hard (jerking), when shifting from reverse to drive when backing out of parking spaces. then it started shifting hard between 1st and 2nd gear and then 3rd and 4th. i had the transmission fluid replaced by nissan, but it didn't resolve the problem. i took it back to nissan who said that the valve body was shorting out. after it was replaced it still didn't work, and now they say that the transmission needs to be replaced. the nissan service dept. claims that they are unaware of the numerous failures and complaints, when it comes to the 2004 maxima transmissions. if you read the complaints on this site and other car survey sites, it seems pretty obvious that the transmission for the 2004 maxima is defective! *tr
I have a 2004 nissan maxima- i purchased it used in 2007. it has 90k miles on it, i love the car but for the past year my transmission has been slipping. the car jerks heavily when i switch from reverse to drive, when i slow down to make a turn, when i accelerate. some days you won't feel it then other days you get whiplash because it happens the whole car ride. i have had my mechanic flush my transmission fluid, brought it to nissan dealers they told me it was my motor mount, and of course when they test drive my car, they don't feel it. one dealer told me i need a new transmission that costs $4000, i can't afford that!!!! i have researched online about this issue and every site i come to has a plethora of complaints with us all having a 2004 maxima with the same issue!!!! this cannot be a coincidence, there is an issue with this and nissan needs to take responsibility. i bought this car for 17k in 2007 and its worth nothing at this point because of this jerking issue. *tr
My transmission started missing jerking when i slow down and pick up speed it jerk harder this problem would stop and start up again so i took the car to the shop and had the trans rebuild and it still do the same thing after paying two thousand dollars for this problem you thank that would be fix but i have to put it back in the shop again. *tr
5 speed automatic transmission malfunction. 3 to 5 second delay prior to engaging in drive and reverse. slips when shifting between gears 1-2-3. sometimes the transmission sticks in 5th gear even when vehicle comes to a complete stop. *tr
I own a 2004 nissan maxima. it has 107,000 miles on it and it needs a transmission. on march 10, 2009, i went to two auto repair shops and was told that my transmission needed to be replaced. two and a half years ago i was having a problem with my transmission and i took my vehicle to the nissan dealership to get the problem taken care of and they examined my vehicle and told me the trans was ok and the problem i'm having is due to two motor mounts that need to be replaced. they said it would cost $800.00 . there are numerous complaints about the transmissions in the 2004 nissan maxima's on line. while your car is still under warranty nissan will find things that are wrong with the car that are not covered under the warranty and tell you its not the transmission it something else. once the warranty has expired then they will say that it is your transmission. these vehicles need to be recalled and have the transmission replaced. *tr
The car jerks when i shift the gears and then again when i brake. *tr
I purchased a 2004 nissan maxima in 2004. i recently begin to experience jerks in my transmission when down shifting and when taking off from 1st to 2nd. this is so disappointing since nissan was suppose to be one of the more reliable vehicles. i took my car to dealership;however, they laugh when i told them what year and the problem i was having. they stated we can put a new one in for you at $3500. this was disappointing of nissan, since they offered no assistance with replacement. i have read several articles on line in regards to nissan and the issue with the transmission and to this day nissan has done nothing to recall this defect part. *tr
