Have a 2004 nissan maxima that is having transmission problems. it doesn't properly engage when upshifting, usually allowing the rpm's to rev up and then slams into gear jerking the car forward. i don't know of any events that have contributed to this failure. this occurs every time the car is warmed up. *tr

On that day i was driving to work and out of no where the car stop running i hit the gas but it was doing nothing. *tr
Transmission began slipping and immediately stalled vehicle at an intersection narrowly avoiding a head o collision. notified manufacturer about safety problem and was told there was no recall on file. *tr
At 50,000 miles auto presented problems with transmission. jerking as if someone hit me on the rear bumper. car slows down on stop lights and highways. took it to nissan dealer shop since brand new and always told them about jerky movements. when auto was 5 years transmission began having serious problems. took it to nissan dealer and they did transmission flush. they did not want to do a scan on the electronic transmission. dismissed as not necessary (sept 2009). they acknowledged faulty transmissions in these cars and suggested a new transmission. afterwards the car has gone bad. i called nissan reps at nissan north america and was referred to local office. finally i took it to a local transmission repair shop where it is sitting right now because i fear for my life while driving. not able to change lanes or accelerate in case of an emergency. *tr
I own a 2004 nissan maxima. ayear ago i noticed a jerk going from 1st gear to 2nd gear. we took it to a transmission shop and they stated i would need a new transmission. at a cost of $ 4000 . i have checked with nissan and they refuse to cover the expense, the jerk is so bad that it feels like some one is rear ending you when you come to a stop and then try to accelerate. this is a extreme safety issue since have a 4 year old and have to transport him back and forth to day care and drive to work. there is many of people on the internet who are experiencing the same problem and even when the transmission is replaced, the problem still continues. *tr
2004 nissan maxima is having transmission problems. automatic transmission slips when shifting from 2nd to 3rd gear and when downshifting from 3rd to 2nd gear. as the transmission slips the rpm increase and when it finally shifts the vehicle violently jerks. because of the continuous slipping/jerking the engine mounds were worn and needed to be replaced. dealer has offered to replace the transmission for +$3000. nissan has not recalled or reported any problems even though there are thousands of complaints online. *tr
While traveling to florida from north carolina, i hit a traffic jam. upon the start and go, my transmission gave me a whiplash type of effect. the transmission is having issues. *tr
Transmission problems- '04 maxima se v6 automatic transmission 53,000 miles. experience sudden and severe jerks when shifting from 1st - 2nd, 2nd - 3rd and back down. no injuries occurred, however high potential for a front to back end collision. *tr
I have a 2004 nissa maxima 3.5 se, i have not driven the vehicle in almost a year. it has made me feel unsafe and refuse to drive it until the transmission is replaced. it only has approximately 84,000 miles on it and even then it seems undrivable. after taking it for a diagnostic to several mechanics, they can't seem to pin point a problem to the vehicle. i ended up doing the tune up, changed up the transmission oil (replaced the filter), changed up the engine brackets, which ended up costing about 1800.00 the only consistent answer i seem to get is that this vehicle make along with the same model seemed to have a defect that nissan refuses to take responsibility for. while driving it, it seems to be driving smoothly and all of a sudden i experience jerking from the vehicle. the first time it occurred, i almost thought the car behind me had rear ended my vehicle. my neck was sore the next day from all the jerking. it seems as if when going from second to third gear, the car jerks and has even gone up to fourth to second gear all while i've maintained the same speed. the car seems to have a mind of its own, which is baffling and even makes me nervous to turn it on. i've done the regular maintenance on the vehicle, so to get a new transmission for a defect caused my the manufacturer is baffling. please help, this vehicle should not be driven in the public. an accident is highly probable caused with sudden jerking. *tr
I have a 2004 nissan maxima sl with an automatic transmission - i am running into a transmission problem which is jerking between switching gears from 1st to 2nd.
My transmission on my 2004 nissan maxima slips from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd i had it flushed and still am experiencing the same problem. this happens every time i drive the car. *tr
Engine / transmission seems to be slipping. the car jerks and rpm's seem to jump around the 3 gear. car seems to be loosing power and works harder to reach higher speeds. 1st gear is ok, after that the second third and fourht gears all kick in within 5mph of each other. i am in fourth gear by the time i reach 25 mph. transmission seems to be going out. nissan dealer states that they found no problems since no codes came up. i will have a local mechanic inspect it since i trust that they will most likely find that it is transmission failure, not some electronic code. there should be a recall for all these vehicles and nissan should own up just as toyota has with their acceleration problems.
I have a 04 nissan maxima that jerks when coming out of a coast especially when coming off of the expressway. this is not the first time this has happend. there have been 2 previous occassions that this has happend and nearly caused serious accidents. i have called nissan and they play dumb as if they are not aware of the issue, when there are tons of complaints all over the internet. what it going to take to get someone to hold nissan accountable for this faulty transmission design? someone getting killed? i pray not.

I have a 2004 nissan maxima. i started having problems with my car jerking esp. going from 1st to 2nd gear and downshifting back from 2nd to 1st. it was random at first but has progressed over the pass 3 months. now, it occurs frequently throughout the day. over the last few weeks, my rpm goes really high before it changes into gear. today my "check engine soon" light came on and stayed. *tr

2004 nissan maxima has 97,000 miles and transmission gets stuck in fifth gear. this is very dangerous because you have no exceleration. dealer suggested changing fluid but i know this won't solve problem. these transmissions should last longer. *tr
(1) 2004 nissan maxima, with no warning , the engine reves up intermittently, cars doesn't accelerate then it starts jerking and bucking, you are stuck in the middle of traffic , until it decides to work again .... (2) it occurs intermittently, no consistent time frame, the engine reves up intermittently, cars doesn't accelerate then it starts jerking and bucking.......consequences: someone is going to get killed because of this failure to operate correctly.....i have read the same problem all over the internet about this vehicle.....there should be a recall done before someone get killed!!!!!!!!my 20 year daughter drives this car and i am concerned for her safety. (3)i have brought it into nissan 5 or more times, but the could not reproduce the same problem....it finally did it again a came up with a code....they now recommend a complete transmission replacement at $4,600.00 ...they do not rebuild these, only replace them because it id too complicated to rebuild.. ********please investigate this problem further and make them recall these vehicles before someone get hurt or killed!!!!! thanks for the opportunity to vent my frustrations! *tr
2004 nissan maxima transmission problems, when you take off it shifts nicely, but when in highway speeds it looses gears, which is very dangerous, someone might crash into me, since the vehicle looses speed. this problem occurs all the time the vehicle is driven. to fix the problem i would need a new transmission they dealer (nissan) said which would cost me around $3500 or $4000 dollar which is ridiculous for a vehicle that has flaws in the powertrain system. *tr
I have a 2004 nissan maxima & the transmission is bad!! it slams & jerks into gear & when i start to slow down it jerks & slams!! more times than not when i stop at a stop sign it is very sluggish & will hardly go when the gas is pushed. i have contacted nissan several different times about this problem & they will not issue a recall or help me in anyway with this problem that is their fault!!! i know i am not the only person with this problem because i have read thousands of complaints online. every time i talk with someone from nissan they tell me that i have to take the car to a dealership & have it diagnosed, & every time they tell me the same thing, that i need a new transmission, but i still can't get any help from nissan!!! the 2004's is the year they put the "new" no-feel shift tranny in & nissan used a cheap plastic valve body & when it gets hot it starts sticking which is causing the jerking & slamming which also s wearing out the clutch plates!!!! i was just going to get the valve body replaced until i fount out that the part itself is $1658.00 without labor!! i am a single parent with a fixed income because i was laid off from my job who can not afford either of the two (a valve body replacement or a new transmission)!!!! i am not looking for a handout but nissan should do the right thing & issue a recall on these transmissions!! i guess it's going to take someone getting killed and/or a lawsuit before they "may" do something about these transmissions!!! *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2004 nissan maxima. while driving approximately 25 mph, the contact heard an abnormal banging coming from the front end of the vehicle. the contact stated that the failure occurred intermittently and became more frequent as time progressed. the failure occurs anytime pressure was applied to the brake pedal or when accelerating. the vehicle was taken to the dealer and to five different independent mechanics who diagnosed the failure to be in the transmission. the technician stated that the transmission would need to be replaced. the approximate failure mileage was 58,000.
Tl* the contact owns a 2004 nissan maxima. the contact stated the vehicle would jerk and it fail to function normally while shifting gears at various speeds. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer who stated the vehicle needed a new transmission. the transmission fluid was flushed, but the transmission was not replaced. the failure continued to occur. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure, but offered no assistance. the failure mileage was 85,000.
My transmission began to slip, slowly, and within 1k miles i needed a new transmission in my 04 nissan maxima. the warranty had just expired leaving me to pay for the entire thing, 3,450 dollar out of pocket. i've done some research and this seems to be a common issues among this vehicle. i do not feel comfortable driving in my car, even though the transmission has been replaced, but since i just spend over 3k to fix my car, i have no money to purchase a new one. again, my car is still not completely fixed and i don't feel comfortable driving in this vehicle and also i have little to no confidence that nissan really cares that myself and thousands others are having the same concerns. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2004 nissan maxima. the contact stated that while driving approximately 10 to 50 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning. after restarting the vehicle, the contact was unable to shift to any gears. the vehicle was later towed to an independent mechanic. after diagnosis, they advised him that the transmission failed and needed to be replaced or rebuilt. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was contacted and they offered no assistance. the failure mileage was approximately 105,000. the current was approximately 130,000. *tr
I am a nissan maxima lover!! i have had a 95 max, a 00 max, and now a 04 max. i had no major problems what so ever with my maximas except for this 04. this car is literally driving me crazy! first the car started jerking. then my windows started sticking my driver and passenger window will go down then sometimes not come back up.then later it started making this embarrassing rattling noise. everytime i got an oil change it would stop for a while. i needed a dependable car which is why i got another nissan but about two weeks ago i was grocery shopping with my kids and as i turned on the highway headed home the whole car shut down in the middle of traffic. how dangerous is that. i managed to coast to a gas station and had to call aaa to tow it home now i am stuck with a car that i cannot drive and have to continue to make car payments on. ive been told it was a mixture of my transmission and timing chain.there have been several reports on this site with transmission and timing chain problems. unless nissan does something about this my next car will be a ford fusion! love my maxima but cannot endanger my kids with an undependable vehicle. with all that business nissan gets what harm will it cause for you to help your customers fix cars that you caused the problem to with this faulty engine and transmission problems. it would keep customers like me coming back to nissans. i do like the new models but i dont want to go through this problem with a newer car. nissan what are you going to do????? *kb

On 02/19/10 while driving my 2004 maxima at approximately 65 mph on a open flat highway, it suddenly downed shifted to approximately 2nd gear. now it will only do 40 mph. i have since discovered that their are several of 2004 maxima owners with the same problem. i have been advise by my mechanic that it will cost approximately $3000 dollars to replace the transmission. my vehicle is now parked and not drive able. i need help ! *tr
My 2004 nissan maxima at slower speeds seems like the transmission seems to lock up momentarily scary almost stopping this has happened on and off for a year now. *tr
In october of 2008 the car started jerking really hard when shifting between 1 and 2nd gears. mainly when i was slowing down to take a turn or when approaching a light and then tried to accelerate. dealer said that i needed to replace transmission or have it rebuilt. i had the transmission rebuilt in january 2009 problem was gone for a little while and then began again about once a week. with time the problem the shifting kept getting harder and harder. february 2010 the check engine light came on. now the car will sometimes jerk really hard and make a really loud clanking noise when shifting. when it does this the car acts like it does not want to accelerate. when car is driven for a few minutes, then turned off and then turned on again then the noise is gone and car accelerates just fine. problem occurs about every other day. when taken to the dealer they said it was the shift solenoid that's related to the transmission. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2004 nissan maxima. the contact stated when braking or accelerating from a complete stop, the vehicle would jerk violently. the dealer advised the transmission was not defective and performed a transmission flush. the failure persisted. there were no further repairs. the manufacturer was not contacted. the failure and current mileages were 121,000.
Tl* the contact owns a 2004 nissan maxima. the contact stated that when the brakes were applied the vehicle began to shake and accelerate. the failure occurred while driving 30 mph. the contact was unable to shift from first to second gear. the dealer stated that the transmission failed and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was taken to a local repair shop. the vehicle was not repaired when the complaint was filed. the failure mileage was 88,800.
My 2004 nissan maxima only at 80,000 miles jerks when i put it in drive or reverse!!! there is a 3 second delay then it jerks. it happens when i am sitting at a light or have my car running then i put the car in drive or reverse the jerks starts. even when i am driving it's starting to jerk a little. i bought a nissan because they are supposed to be dependable long lasting cars. i would hope that it would last over a 100,000 miles before all the problems started .nissan really needs to correct this problem before this car ends up hurting somebody because nissan refuse to recall this issue and fix the problem. this is a manufacture default! nissan needs to own up to this problem! they acted like no one else is complaining. so please help resolve this manufacture defect because nissan seems not to care about this serious problem. *tr
The 2004 nissan maxima has a serious and life threatening transmission defect. the vehicle is unable to accelerate around 30mph as the tachometer races over 2000 rpm and the car also has a violent jerking motion when going into reverse. *tr
Car starting shifting extremely hard when changing from 1st to 2nd gear thought i was rear ended. proceeded to research and came across many owners of this make model and year having the same issue and now as i change gears to park it idles for a few seconds then changes extremely loud and make a banging noise. i'm extremely worried for my safety due to the fact i commute back and fourth to work far distances and i bought this car at the nissan dealership with confidence my car only has 101,000 miles and its a 2004 so it hasn't been abused. *tr
2004 nissan maxima - 110,000 miles, 5 speed automatic transmission - slipping from 2nd to 3rd gear causing the car to jerk violently when it re-engages. the internet consumer forums/boards are flooded with people experiencing the same problem on the 2004/2005 maxima's. this is a known defect that nissan is not willing to address and is charging consumers an average of $4000 to repair. *tr
The car is an automatic and gets stuck in 5th gear. this happens at start-up, or while driving. when the vehicle slips into 5th on the open road, it is obviously sluggish and much slower than the flow of traffic, making an accident likely. *tr
Loud clunk and jerk from the transmission during upshift and downshift. it is needless to say that sudden transmission failure on a moving car can be extremely dangerous. it is a 2004 nissan maxima and has 67k miles. there are atleast hundreds of vehicle owners complaining about the same issue, which clearly seems to be a defect in manufacturing. *tr
Transmission in my 2004 nissan maxima is slipping. it bucks when i go from reverse to first. i have about 118,000 miles and i am the original owner. the slippage started around 100k miles. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2004 nissan maxima. the contact was driving approximately 40 mph, the engine revved with an extremely high increase in the rpms. suddenly, the vehicle began to jerk. on a separate occasion when pressure was applied to the accelerator pedal an unexpected increase in the speed rate occurred. the failures were intermittent. the vehicle was diagnosed by two different independent mechanics and they both informed that the failure was related to the transmission. the vehicle was not repaired when the complaint was filed. the vin was unavailable. the failure mileage was 62,000.
Please note that i have done some research on line and discovered that many people are going through exactly what i am going through. this has been very frustrating for me and my husband because we have had nissan all of our lives and have never had problems such as these. i purchased my 2004 nissan maxima used in 2006 with a little over 50,000 miles on it. after it reached around 90,000 miles, i started feeling the jerking just like to the others, my transmission is slipping. this is my third time i have taken it to the dealership and they cannot seem to properly diagnose the problem. i was told i needed a new motor mount, which i replaced on february 19, 2010 for $484.00. after driving it home, still experienced the same problem. so we took it back to further diagnose the problem, were told the sensor needed to be replaced and that should fix the problem. finally, we were told by the service manager that we needed a transmission. my transmission continues to bang when downshifting from 2nd to 1st gear. it also surges when accelerating after slowing down and hesitates at least a 10 seconds before engaging into gear. when in park or neutral, the transmission bangs when driving off from 1st to 2nd. . i am told by the dealership that i am going to new to purchase a new transmission in order to fix the problem. i am so afraid the drive the car because it slips and hesitates. this is scary, especially on the highway. i hope that it will not take a fatality for nissan to face up to their problems. any assistance you can provide will be greatly appreciated. our names are [xxx] . we can be reached at [xxx]. thanks for your guidance. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr
I drive a 2004 nissan maxima 3.5se, it currently has about 115000 miles on it, i bought it with about 62,000, and since about a month after buying it i have had problems with the transmission shifting. it shifts very hard randomly, and slips constantly, both occurring just about everytime i drive the car. after researching online on all of the nissan and maxima forums, just about every person driving an 2004 has the same issues, but nissan is yet to release a recall on the problem, even though it can be very dangerous on the highway or in heavy traffic situations. *tr
2004 nissan maxima that sways while driving straight and shifts hard or skips out of gear between 2nd and 3rd gear. only have 59,500 miles on car and front struts sway bar sub frame bushings need to be replaced along with struts and transmission. *tr
The transmission on the 2004 nissan maxima is defective and causes a driving hazard as power is lost upon acceleration. hundreds of customers are having the same problem but nissan refuses to issue a recall. they were aware of this problem back on march 10, 2004 when they issued a "technical service bulletin, # ntb04-035" describing the problem. numerous internet sites show the hundreds of customers complaining of this dangerous condition. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2004 nissan maxima. the contact was driving approximately 20 mph on wet road conditions. the transmission exhibited a violent pulling motion and suddenly, the vehicle skidded across the roadway. the driver was able to resume normal operation. the failure occurred intermittently. the vehicle has not been repaired at this time. the vin was unavailable. the failure and current mileages were 130,000.
The car started to jerk from reverse into drive. this lasted for about two weeks. then i started to notice that the transmission would jerk while down shifting from 2nd gear into 1st. when accelerating the transmission would pop into gear from 4th to 5th after passing 5k rpms. this lasted for about two months. in mid march the car had these problems but also started to jerk into gear from 2nd to third. at times after coming to a complete stop, the car would be stuck in 5th gear. i would have to turn the car off and turn it back on for it to engage 1st gear. now on may 14, 2010 the car will not shift past 3rd gear and revs past 7k rpms without shifting. *tr
I own a 2004 nissan maxima and it has some transmission problem. it shifts abruptly/abnormally from low gear. after researching myself, i found it is very common for this kind of vehicle and many others suffer as well (see link below). i am wondering if your organization can help to bring this to nissan's attention and ask them to fix it since it looks like a problem from the manufacturer. http://www.carsurvey.org/reviews/nissan/maxima/r61092/comments/page-21/. *tr
