Symptoms: How to Recognize a Defective Starter on the Mazda CX-5

If your Mazda CX-5 is having start-up problems, the starter motor could be one of many potential culprits. The following symptoms can help narrow down this suspicion:

1. The starter "spins freely": If the starter spins freely during the start attempt, this is a strong indication of a defective starter.
2. Starter "clicks" weakly: This symptom is also a noticeable sign of a broken or defective starter, but only on the condition that the vehicle's battery is fully charged.

Note: In most cases, a dead battery is the reason for start-up difficulties. Therefore, you may need to replace the Mazda CX-5 battery instead of the starter.
