What is the SCBS error on a Mazda CX-5?

What is the SCBS error on a Mazda CX-5?

In this guide, we explain the Mazda error messages: "SCBS Forward Gear Malfunction" and "SCBS Reverse Gear Malfunction". We will discuss the symptoms, possible causes, and the costs of potential solutions.

What is the Cause of this Error Message – Which Mazda Models are Affected?

This article is exclusively about the SCBS (Smart City Brake Support) system, not the SBS (Smart Brake Support) system, although the latter must also be mentioned here. The SCBS system has been installed in Mazda vehicles since 2012 and has continuously evolved in its functionality. However, the main cause of the error message "SCBS F Malfunction" or "SCBS R Malfunction" remains unaffected.

Depending on the vehicle's equipment variant, there is the SCBS (Front) laser sensor for the front and the SCBS (Rear) laser sensor for the rear. The cause of this error message is most likely the laser sensor installed on the rearview mirror base.

For safe continued operation of the vehicle, the windshield should first be cleared of dirt, snow, ice, etc. If this does not help, the SCBS F system must be switched off for further driving (if possible). The error message usually affects all Mazda vehicles since 2012 with the above-mentioned systems.

Symptoms: How Does the Error Manifest in the Car?

The error message "SCBS Forward Gear Malfunction" (Fig.2) or "SCBS Reverse Gear Malfunction" (Fig.3) appears in text form on the car's onboard computer. As a result, the ON/OFF switch (if available) of the SCBS lights up in the "OFF" mode in the switch unit in the dashboard.

Warning! The car can also brake unintentionally without manual operation of the foot brake in this error (SCBS F). The vehicle should then not be driven further with this error if the system cannot be manually deactivated. This can create an extreme risk of accidents. After the failure of the SCBS F, the nearest Mazda dealership must be visited immediately. If the error is on the SCBS R, the car can at least continue to be driven in the forward gears.

Please note that the SBSC F system reactivates every time the vehicle is restarted. Therefore, if the error persists, the SBSC F must always be deactivated again before continuing to drive.

Informative: First, make sure your car also has the assistance systems mentioned here and whether they can be manually switched on and off. To switch the SCBS system on and off, please read the vehicle's operating instructions beforehand.

Problem Solution / Problem Treatment – How Can the Error be Fixed?

As already mentioned, the error with the SCBS F is usually due to a heavily soiled windshield or the laser sensor installed in the rearview mirror base. If this has a malfunction or is defective, it must be replaced immediately for safe continued driving. If the error is caused by the SCBS R, the laser sensor in the rear bumper must be cleaned or replaced if defective.

Informative: Mazda recommends in its operating manual not to use window cleaning agents when cleaning the windshield, as these could negatively affect the laser sensor for the SBSC.

The SCBS F (Front, Front) The SCBS F operates in the speed range from approximately 2.5 to 18.6 mph. This system uses a laser to orient itself to a vehicle in front during driving and adjusts to it. If this vehicle suddenly stops, the SCBS intervenes in connection with an acoustic warningtone and automatically reduces the speed. Ultimately, however, the driver must still brake himself before the SBS intervenes and triggers an emergency brake.

The SCBS R (Rear, Rear) The SCBS R is designed to protect the car from a strong impact when reversing. Just like the SBSC F, it slows down the car in front of an unseen obstacle (bollard, wall) slightly before the SBS triggers an emergency brake. This system operates here between approximately 1.2 and 5 mph. At a speed of over 5 mph, the emergency brake assistant (SBS) immediately stops the car in front of an obstacle.

Legal: Since both systems do not function flawlessly, the full responsibility always lies with the driver of the car when using them in road traffic.
