This troubleshooting guide will assist you if your Mazda CX-5 doesn't start or has trouble starting. We discuss the most common reasons and provide appropriate solutions. A dead car battery isn't always the cause when the engine of the mid-size SUV from Mazda has trouble starting.

We will first discuss potential vehicle-dependent reasons for the Mazda CX-5 before providing general procedures and solutions.
Especially in winter and on colder days, a dead or nearly discharged starter battery can cause your Mazda CX-5 to refuse to start or exhibit poor starting behavior. A sluggish starter, which only moves slowly and grinds, is a particular sign.
If the battery is extremely discharged, you may only hear a faint clicking, caused by a magnetic switch in some starter models.
If you've identified the battery as the culprit, usually only jump-starting your vehicle with a jump-start cable will help if you want to drive off immediately. Please refer to the necessary measures in our previously linked guide.
If your Mazda CX-5 has a manual transmission, the car can also be started by push starting. We also show a specially published guide for push starting the vehicle or the embedded help video below.
Please note: Never attempt to push start a car with an automatic transmission – this can cause significant damage to the vehicle!
Do you have a little more time? Then we recommend simply charging the discharged starter battery with a suitable battery charger. We explain the measures for this in our guide to changing & charging the Mazda CX-5 battery.
Tip: If your Mazda is finally running, it's best to drive around for a while so that your car battery can recharge via the alternator. If you continue to have problems starting, the starter battery should be replaced – you can also find a description of this in the previously linked guide page for your Mazda CX-5!
If you don't hear any starter noise, this is usually an indication that cables in your engine compartment may be defective.
The good news: Under these circumstances, your battery is likely still powerful and is not the problem.
The bad news? If power lines, ignition cables, and hoses are damaged (usually as a result of a marten bite), you will most likely not be able to continue your journey immediately. In this case, the corresponding component must be replaced before you can continue your journey properly.
Open the Mazda CX-5 hood and first check the lines and plugs or clamps on the battery terminals. If something here is not properly attached, you're in luck – reattach the clamp properly to the battery terminal and your Mazda could start again.
Also check the ignition cables (you may need to remove the engine cover for this) and other visible connections and hoseswithin the engine compartment for cable breaks and/or animal damage.
Tip: As a rule, you can also identify marten damage by the fact that the insulation wool inside the engine hood is damaged.
If you have ensured that the Mazda CX-5 battery is sufficiently charged (you can check this by temporarily turning on the light or other consumers), the supply of the fuel system is the 3rd most common reason for a car that doesn't want to start.
Please first check your fuel gauge and ensure by a checking glance under the car that no fuel is leaking from a possibly porous tank.
If the fuel gauge is correct and fortunately no gasoline/diesel has leaked, a blockage of the fuel line or a clogged fuel filter could be the cause of the problem.
In older vehicles, the fuel filter is sometimes clearly visible and easily accessible in the engine compartment. In this case, a check can be carried out – unfortunately, this only applies to a small number of vehicles registered today.
A check of the spark plugs can also be helpful – however, you should not expect too much from the measure.
In many cases, it will be unavoidable to contact a workshop or the breakdown service.
