Mazda CX-5 airbag light is on - causes and how to reset

In this article, we will discuss the Mazda CX-5 airbag error (airbag light on) and explain possible causes and their corresponding solutions. We will also cover potential costs and finally, we will show you how to reset or delete the airbag error.

Mazda CX-5 Airbag Error: Possible Causes

  • Electrical resistance problem (connector / cable)
  • Broken power cable under the driver's seat (depending on the model)
  • Broken airbag control unit
  • Other broken modules in the airbag system causing the error code

Can You Continue Driving When the Airbag Warning Light is On in the Mazda CX-5?

While it is possible to continue driving with the airbag warning light on, we strongly advise against it due to passenger safety and recommend taking the Mazda CX-5 to a workshop as soon as possible.

Solutions: How Can the Airbag Error be Fixed?

  • Read out the control unit (in a car workshop or via an OBD Bluetooth adapter - see below)
  • Have connectors & cables checked (e.g., under the seat)
  • Replace the airbag control unit (or possibly have it repaired)

Note: All necessary work on the airbag system should generally only be carried out by automotive workshops with specially trained personnel.

Mazda CX-5: Resetting or Deleting the Airbag Error

Note: Only delete the error in the control unit if the airbag has already been repaired. Otherwise, you risk serious personal injury and the error message will inevitably reappear on the display in the foreseeable future.

  1. Connect the OBD Bluetooth adapter (see below) to your smartphone - you can choose from various OBD apps.
  2. Now you can display all read error codes in the main menu.
  3. Select the error code that triggers the airbag warning light and delete it by pressing a button on your mobile phone.
  4. Turn on the car and check whether the deletion or reset of the airbag warning light on the Mazda CX-5 has worked.

Tip: With the following OBD2 adapter, you can not only reset the airbag warning light, but also delete all other stored errors in the error memory of your vehicle (e.g., if the Mazda CX-5 engine warning light is on).
