On this page, we delve into the costs and causes of an illuminated ESP warning light on the Mazda CX-5. We investigate whether it's a malfunction or an error (analysis of different scenarios) and then describe some possible solutions along with their respective costs.

Depending on the manufacturer, vehicle model, equipment, and series or infotainment, the ESP systems in the car have different symbols or names (see below). Note: Often, when there is an ESP defect, the Mazda CX-5 engine control light and possibly an ABS light also illuminate. The ESP symbols or lamps vary depending on the vehicle model and series.
A reader's note (OliKincs): If the light consistently illuminates after every restart after about 6 to 31 miles of driving, you should also check the vehicle's straight-line stability. If you have to constantly counter-steer on a straight and level road, the vehicle's tracking is likely misaligned. This, in addition to increased tire wear, also leads to the ESP being switched off after a few miles of driving. Any body repair shop can correct the tracking, costs about $120, if no further defects - caused, for example, by rough curb contact - exist.

The cause for the ESP switching off is the constant difference between steering wheel angle and vehicle movement, which leads to an error that grows over time and can no longer be compensated.
If you have not deactivated the ESP system yourself (in this case, the symbol lights up), you can continue driving with an illuminated ESP lamp - however, safety in the vehicle is greatly limited because the stability program is not working properly. We recommend bringing the car to the nearest workshop at a slow speed (mainly in curves).
Depending on the model and series, vehicle stability programs (ESP, ESC & Co.) can be switched off with a button on the dashboard or a command in the vehicle's infotainment. This deactivation is usually no longer active at the next vehicle start and is therefore not permanent. Note: We strongly recommend not to deactivate the ESP system of your Mazda CX-5, as this can have direct effects on your safety and that of your passengers.
