Recently reported STEERING problems on 2010 Ford Fusion

Today, april 20 2017, while on the highway driving my morning commute i had 2 service lights come on.. "service advancetrac" & "service power steering". i had never had these lights pop up so it took me by surprise but figured i would have the car checked over the weekend, i couldn't even do that because no more than 10 minutes later my car went completely stiff on me while i was still on the highway driving at 65mph. it was the scariest feeling and all i could think was that i was so glad i had already dropped my 6 year old off at school because at least if i was in an accident he wouldn't be injured. i am only 5'2" and around 140lbs and it took everything i had to try and turn into my jobs parking lot. luckily i did make it to work but once i parked i could feel that the steering wheel was not going to budge so i now need to get a tow truck to haul my car and myself back home. i'm at a loss for words for the people of ford who know this is an ongoing issue, yet have done nothing to right their wrong to their customers.

2010 ford fusion se. i lost power steering assist while driving. after pulling over i restarted the car but the issue remained i now only have manual steering. my wife and i stopped by the dealer we were told that ford does not have any recalls listed for our model .but after researching i see that 2011 and up have been recalled for the electronic assist power steering.

2010 ford fusion electronic power assist steering (epas) i was driving my family around town, saturday, april 8, 2017, when a message came across the dash saying, "service avancetrac". i stopped the car and turned the engine off. 20 minutes later we got back in our car turned it on and the power steering was gone. the warning on the dash now reads, " service power steering now". the vehicle was in motion when the first warning occurred. the vehicle was stationary when the power steering failed altogether. this seems to already be a reported problem for this vehicle and is currently being investigated by the nhtsa. i am thankful this didn't occur at highway speeds or any other scenario that puts my family in harm's way.

Power steering shift warning comes on and you cant steer. dealer did a reset of computer but said it needs to be replaced at charge of $1400. that part is covered free of charge in 2011 but not in 2010.

Electronic power steering assist fault indicated. electronic power assist steering (epas) not functioning. epas system fault indicated while driving at 35 mph. epas quit functioning entirely and steering became difficult without the assist. accident was barely avoided. epas will not reset and i was told by a ford dealership there are currently 8 cars in the u.s. that they cannot diagnose or reprogram. therefore i have an otherwise good vehicle that is undrivable.

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford fusion. while driving 35 mph, the power steering failed without warning. the dealer replaced the power steering gear assembly and the power steering rack, but the failure recurred. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 120,000.

The electric power steering system (epas) has failed and i can no longer turn my steering wheel. ford states that in the case of this issue, the car can be manually turned, but this is not the case. the steering wheel without electric power steering is impossible to turn unless super human strength. if this system would have failed on me at high speeds, i would have crashed and could have died or even killed others. this system needs to be recalled by ford immediately. ford has already recalled their gen 1 epas system on 2011 ford vehicles but this same system has been manufactured since 2008 and is equipped in my 2010 ford fusion. this recall should cover all vehicles that are equipped with the gen 1 epas system for safety reasons. the system failed on me as i was driving home on city streets (moderate speed). the steering become extremely stiff and hard to stay in my lane.

I was on my way home turning on a city street when suddenly the vehicle loss electrical power steering (eps) making extremely difficult to steer and turn, i went off the road but was able to avoid accident. abs, traction light, brake light appeared on dash and advanctrac message in the instrument panel cluster. i drove home without any power steering and have not driven the vehicle since, to avoid further accident/damage. i started to research the problem only to find out many others had experienced this same problem with their 2010 ford fusion.

Steering rack makes a grinding noise and will intermittently lose power steering. does it parked or while driving. noise is when turning the steering wheel.

2010 ford fusion idler pulley bolt sheered off along with piece of engine block and pulley resulting in a near accident as drive belt, and power steering failed and vehicle would not go past 20 miles per hour (on highway). my wife (5 months pregnant) was driving at the posted speed of 70 mph when the pulley and bolt sheered off. her car was nearly struck from behind by several vehicles as well as not being able to steer the car herself. looking at ford fusion blogs, this appears to be a common problem that ford has not fixed in their earlier models. this design and/or stress fault causes safety concerns as well as costly repairs since piece of the engine block can sheer off with the idler pulley bolt.

After driving in dallas thx, i drove home on highway 183. once i got off 183 in turned to the street in my neighborhood where kids after school were playing outside and my kids. i turned into my driveway but as i was still driving all steering was lost as soon as i straightened it. if i hadn't went home and was still driving i could of really hurt someone or kids or myself really bad or caused a death!

My daughter was driving and the steering wheel locked up with powerassist error code. this happened in 2014. there was a recall but it applied only to years 2011-2012. i had to spend $2000 to have the it replaced. it happened again last week(safety concern). the dealership said it was a software glitch. they reset the code($400) but it locked up again yeterday. problem not fixed. i think i have a lemon. not happy with response as this is a major safety concern with steering wheel locking up . i do not have another $2000 to spend

Power steering assist fault light came on and lost all power steering backing up.

Went to leave for work 3-4-17, upon starting car, service power steering assist light on and unable to turn wheel

Power steering failure light turned on and lost power steering while backing out of driveway. turned vehicle off and issue resolved.

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford fusion. while the contact's daughter was driving at an unknown speed, the power steering failed and the power assist warning indicator illuminated. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the power steering gear failed and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired. the vin was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 15v340000 (steering). the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was approximately 101,000.

Power steering disabled due to part failure. this occurred after starting the engine on multiple occasions. called ford shop but they insisted the warning sign had to be on for them to determine the cause. had to continue to drive not knowing when it would reoccur.

Power steering turned while driving almost went into a poll

Mostly happens when i start the car from a cold start. the dash display shows "power steering assist fault". then i have manual steering. i shut the car off and then restart the engine and everything is fine. this has happened now about once every 1-2 months. happens when i start the vehicle from a stationary position

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford fusion. while driving approximately 40 mph, an audible alarm activated and the power steering suddenly failed. the steering wheel could not be turned. during the incident, the service power steering message displayed. the vehicle was towed to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the power steering rack was faulty and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the vin was not available. the failure mileage was 118,000.

Loss of power steering and advance trac at highway speed. received a message on the instrument cluster and steering became extremely difficult to keep the car on the road.

In 2014 the power steering went out on the ford fusion 2010 at 56147 mileage while driving on an interstate highway. the ford dealer tried resetting it and it continued to intermittently lose steeriing. if i was not as strong or has experienced of a driver as i am i would of definitely been in an accident! the power steering was replaced by the ford dealer as it was still under warranty. now 2 1/2 years later at 102,000 mileage i experienced the same problem again driving down an interstate freeway and barely avoided getting in an accident as it is the middle of winter. the power steering no longer has a warranty after 2 years. why has this not been recalled when the same power steering was recalled on 2011 and 2012 ford fusions?

Power steering goes out while driving. dashboard lights indicate power steering is out. very scary. pulls extremely hard to left and right t any given time.

Service power steering message came on while driving. steering eventually became harder while driving. when parked turned car off and back on and light said "service power steering now" and the steering wheel wouldn't move at all. light saying "service advanctrac" also came on

The steering stopped moving and an error was displayed on the dash board "power steering assist fault". luckily i was stopped at a traffic signal. i switched off the car and restarted abd the error went away and i was able to drive. then a day later, i was trying to start the car and same thing happened. only this time even switching off and on the car. and the streering wont move at all. the first time this happened i was on the road. it is scary to have the steeering lock up while driving.

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford fusion. while driving 60 mph, the steering wheel shook violently without warning. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was unknown.

Complete failure of power steering system - almost caused accident

I cranked up my car in my driveway and the power steering assist fault light came on. i had no power steering. i reset it by turning the engine off and then back on. i did this since february but now turning the engine off and on no longer resets it. apparently, there is no recall for this and i was quoted a price of $1599 to install a new rack. .

According to the aaa repair facility (whom i trust), the hydraulic fluid within my 2010 ford fusion's electric rack and pinion assembly (a.k.a., the steering gear) has leaked out of the unit, most likely the result of faulty seals. they indicate that the assembly must be replaced prior to complete failure of the existing unit that would ultimately result in the abrupt and complete loss of power steering, posing a potential catastrophic risk of life and limb. the observed symptoms thus far have been erratic behavior while braking (the trigger for the aaa analysis) - the result of the leaked hydraulic fluid spraying the front brakes. i've discovered that the previous recall investigation for this 2010 ford fusion issue resulted in the recall of 2011 and 2012 ford fusions, but not the 2010 ford fusion. i also discovered that the 2010 ford fusion investigation has been re-opened, and i would therefore ask that my complaint be added to the investigation. i will undoubtedly have to repair this prior to the conclusion of the nhtsa investigation, and would therefore like to know whether ford will be required to refund me for the cost of the repairs if they are not performed in a ford repair facility.

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford fusion. the contact stated that there was a premature failure with the eps and the eps warning indicator flashed "service power steering now". the vehicle was taken to a dealer (mathieu ford, 664 spring st, winchendon, ma 01475, (978) 297-0001) who cleared the code, but did not provide a specific diagnosis. the vehicle was not repaired. the eps warning indicator remained illuminated each time the failure occurred. the vehicle was parked at the contact's residence and was unable to be driven. the manufacturer was notified of the failure and indicated that the vehicle was excluded from an eps recall. the failure mileage was not available.

2016 ford fusion. consumer writes in regards to head gasket and exhaust manifold issues. *ld the consumer stated the engine was replaced twice, the power steering and various sensors were replaced twice as well. the manufacturer was notified, but could not determine the failure. *js

While getting onto the highway "service power steering now" came up on the display. the car lost all power steering. thankfully i was able to muscle the car off the highway. the wheel jerked to the left when the power steering went out. this is hazardous and could cause wrecks. for a little research i see that i am not the only person to have this happen to them.

Power assist failure. while driving on the highway, power assist failed making the car very hard to steer creating a dangerous condition that may cause an accident. after research i noticed that was a very common problem happening to many ford fusion. while the 2011 and 2012 ford fusion had a recall on this issue, the 2010 model is not included. the repair is estimated at $1,972.99. the dealer seems aware this is a design failure of the 2010 ford fusion making it unsafe to operate and a recall should be made. *tr

The eps (electric power steering) unit just failed on my 2010 ford fusion s. the problem indicator light has flashed on startup a few times over the past couple of months, but finally came on permanently yesterday, 01/26/2017. when the indicator text came onto the error screen it showed the following text and all power assist to my steering was gone: power steering failure and advance track failure my dealer has told me that this is a known issue on most ford fusion model years, but a recall has only been issued for the last few years and does not include mine! he described the issue as one where the ribbon cable that connects the eps unit is prone to disintegration, as it was originally designed, and the fixed eps units do not have this design flaw. the fix for this is more than $2000 dollars, and should not be placed onto the consumer since this critical safety part will fail on all ford fusion models over time... some sooner and some later. this is not an inconvenience like a broke radio or a leaking hose. this is a a disastrous situation of the fist order. how many lives is ford willing to sacrifice as steering failures occur around the world, before they decide to take action?

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford fusion. while driving 45 mph, the service power steering and advance track warning indicator illuminated the contact was able to drive the vehicle without losing power steering or other issues. upon starting the vehicle the next morning, there was no power steering. the vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the steering wheel motor needed replacement. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure and opened a case. the contact mentioned that the failure occurred at 80,00 miles. the dealer was unable to diagnose the cause of the failure. the failure mileage was 100,000. updated 06/21/17*lj *cn

Was driving when a "service power steering now" warning came on, seconds later the power steering totally went out. struggled to get the car to the side of the road, then limped it to dealership. *tr

While driving, the power steering locked up making the vehicle almost impossible to steer. thankfully it managed to get to a safe stop. *tr

Power steering failure. this same issue has been recalled on the 2011-2015 models, but not on 2010. i think it is related.

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford fusion. while driving, the steering failed and the steering wheel became abnormally tight. the power steering warning light did not illuminate until after the failure. the vehicle was towed to the contact?s residence. the vehicle was not taken to the dealer. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 146,169.

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford fusion. while driving 50 mph, the power steering failed without warning while exiting the highway. the dealer diagnosed that the power steering failed and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 96,400.

While driving the power steering went out. after some reading i saw that hundreds of people have experienced this costing up to 2000 dollars to fix. this was all related to the power assist component that had already been recalled on 2011 and newer. 2010 was left out yet has the same issue as mine does now. had this been my children driving they would not have has the arm strength to turn the wheel. this issue is possibly deadly and should be addressed quickly. i now have a car that i can not drive because it is unsafe. as of right now i would like to see ford include 2010 and older that have the same issues as the 2011 models or new models have. what if it was one of your children driving this vehicle? would you want it recalled for their safety? *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford fusion. the contact stated that the power steering failed and the vehicle abruptly stalled. prior to the failure, the power steering warning indicator illuminated. the vehicle was inoperable, but was not towed. the vehicle was not taken to the dealer to be diagnosed. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the vin was unknown. the approximate failure mileage was 160,000.

Power steering started to randomly go out. we would turn the car off and on and it would come and go. it is a good thing we were not driving on the highway or something like that. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford fusion. while driving 15 mph, the power steering failed and the wrench warning indicator illuminated. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the power steering rack failed and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 80,000......updated 03/08/17 *bf the consumer stated the power steering failed while driving. updated 09/07/2017*js

I was driving my 2010 ford fusion in a parking lot and when making a right turn the "service power steering" and "service advance trac" lights started flashing. my boyfriend and i weren't sure what that meant so we continued to drive home a few minutes down the road. once reaching our driveway the car seemed a little harder to turn, but it still wasn't that bad. we decided in the morning to take it to the dealership. we started the car and we could not move the steering wheel at all. i do see that this is a common problem with the 2010 ford fusions, but ford has not made this a recall and there is a lawsuit regarding this. thankfully we nor anyone around us was hurt, but now we are looking at paying around $1500 for repairs. it would be nice if ford could have this issue fixed. *tr

Power steering went out while driving on the road. advancetrac and service power steering lights are on.

My power assist unit has went totally out, have made numerous contacts with dealer and ford with no help, however i work with someone who just had their 2010 fusion power assist replaced by recall and his was not out! i am still driving with absolutely no power steering at all!

Power steering assist is lost on a regular basis. the problem can be alleviated most of the time by turning the ignition off and then restarting the car. sometimes it may take repeating this process multiple times. luckily the power steering assist has never stopped working while the vehicle was in motion.

I was driving on a city street when i get an alert of low tire pressure less than 1 minute my power steering became extremely hard difficult to turn i had pull to the closet parking i could fine. if i had been on the freeway i would have easily caused an accident.

Electronic power steering system failure. very had to steer car at any point of turning the wheel.
