We have classified the 1266 complaints from 2010 Ford Fusion about STEERING into the following categories.
Intermittently while driving - the battery indicator will come on and i will subsequently lose power steering. if i power off the vehicle, the indicator goes away and power steering returns the next time i turn it on. the issue will resurface, and it is now happening more frequently. this is the same issue that caused a recall in the 2011 and 2012 models, however, my model is the 2010.
Steering failed while driving. i lost steering assist while turning the vehicle, very dangerous. the vehicle was very hard to control especially at lower speeds. was driving around town 45 mph speeds steering assist did not return. had trouble code u3000 pulled from computer, and found out that the steering rack needed to be replaced.
Power steering goes out , works and goes out again.
My daughter was driving and power steering stopped. light came on service power steering. needless to say a very dangerous situation for her and for every one around her. 55000 miles and had 6 recalls. this to should be because if she had been on the interstate at 65 mph i could have lost her yesterday so something needs to be done.
Advance track and service power steering warnings flashed while vehicle was in motion, parked car and restarted and the power steering was no longer functioning. had to replace epas system

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford fusion. when the vehicle was started and while driving various speeds, the steering wheel became difficult to turn. on several occasions, while driving, the contact was unable to turn the steering wheel to the left or right. when the contact pulled the vehicle over to the side of the road and turned off and restarted the engine, the steering ability returned to normal. while in traffic, the key had to be turned in the ignition several times to regain steering function. the contact diagnosed the vehicle himself and located a failure code at the steering wheel rack. the steering wheel rack was not replaced. the dealer and manufacturer were not contacted. the failure mileage was 156,000.
We were driving the car this morning around 5:30 am going around 50 mph and the power steering stopped working. it was very difficult to steer the car and unsafe to drive now. you could barely turn the wheel going at that speed. dash says service power steering but shows no codes once hooked up.
The electronic power steering fails as the power steering module fails to communicate. this is an issue that could happen while driving which could easily result in an accident. luckily, my car had been parked when i discovered the issue but quite a few people haven't been as fortunate. they've recalled model years 2011-2014 but the defect is present in the 2010 models as well yet they will not issue a recall.
The service power steering light came on while i was driving & the power steering was gone, i could hardly turn the wheel! thankfully it didn't cause an accident, but now i'm about to incur some hefty expenses to have it repaired!
Me and my daughter were on the way to go christmas shopping and a warning sign came on with a caution sound saying power steering service now and not even 2 minutes later as we pulled into the parking lot my steering wheel became so tight i couldn't turn it to park and was stranded at a walmart. i thank god it didn't happen while i was driving a normal speed. this is very very dangerous ford! i see similar complaints and i hope this will be financially covered by your company even though i don't see the recall on my 2010 but it's having the same problem as the other year models 🤔
Power steering assist fault warning light came on about two weeks ago while i was driving, turned car off for a few minutes and it disappeared. the next day it reappeared while i was driving and never turned back off, luckily was down the street from my home & wasn't in danger of causing an accident. now along with that warning light came service advancetrac. took the vehicle to the dealership, paid $129 for a diagnostic test, was informed that it was going to cost me nearly $2,000 to get my car fixed. why was the recall for this same exact issue only for 2011-2013 models of the same exact car with the same exact parts?!?!!?!?
Power steering went out when started vehicle- have no power steering now
As i was dringing at 45 mph the service power steering light came on and service advanctrac also came on. i lost all power steering and had to pull into a parking lot. i got it back home , driving at a slower speed.
While driving home from work on a main highway, the "power assist steering fault" warning came on and i was unable to steer the vehicle. i was forced to have the car towed to a repair shop. i am lucky that this did not occur while traveling at highway speeds.
My power steering was intermittently going out while in park or while driving over the past two years. it began occurring daily over the past month, and now has permanently gone out.

When attempting to pull away from a gas pump at a filling station, my power steering abruptly quit working and a warning came up on my screen saying something about power steering assist. the vehicle is a 2010 ford fusion. it placed me in a very difficult and potentially dangerous situation since it was during rush hour at the station. this lack of power steering increased the chance of a vehicle crash of some kind. i purchased this vehicle new from a dealer in topeka, ks. at the time of the incident, the vehicle had less than 40,000 miles and is in excellent condition. i am a recently widowed 70 year old woman weighing less than 100 lbs and i cannot turn a vehicle without power steering. the vehicle required replacing the electric power steering gear assembly costing me $1,266.33. this same issue was recalled for 2011 and 2012 ford fusions, but no recall for 2010. please explain why a recall was not also done for 2010 fusions since the issues were identical regarding shut down of power steering. i do not know how to send the invoice with this complaint, but can send it separately if possible
Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford fusion. while driving approximately 45 mph, the steering wheel seized and the power steering warning indicator illuminated. the vehicle was able to coast to the side of the road. the contact powered off the engine. the vehicle was restarted and was able to drive; however, the failure recurred. the vehicle was not taken to a dealer or an independent mechanic to determine the cause of the failure. the manufacturer was not contacted. the approximate failure mileage was 61,000.
Drove the vehicle out for lunch and was just fine. after lunch, i got into my vehicle and went on to drive back to work. than my steering wheel completely stopped working and the warning lights came on. " service power steering now" . luckily there was no car when i braked and just minor hit the curb. so i tried my best to drive it out of traffic and made it to a parking lot. read some information about this power steering, and looked like i'm not the only one with this problem. this is definitely a safety hazard cause i use tollways and highways to get to work and home, if this happened during that time, i might not be the one typing this to you guys. hopefully this gets fixed so other people don't face this situation.
While driving with my family , moving about 50 mph the check power steering and service advanctrax came over the instrument panel. i then lost all power steering. i was able to safely get it to the side of the road. i am not able to get it repaired due to cost. 12/10/17. 85,000 miles
After starting the car a notice came on the message center that said a steering fault occurred. as i drove away the power assist was non existent and it took all the strength i had to move the steering wheel. when i turned off the ignition and restarted the car the problem went away. now i worry it will reoccur while at highway speed or turning at an intersection.
2010 fusion steering malfunctioned while backing out of parking spot. check engine light came on reading advancetrac power assist warning. i had no power steering.
I got 2 messages pop up; power steering assist fault and service advancetrac. all of the sudden my power steering failed and i nearly ran into another car while turning right.
Power steering assist fault occurred as i was driving down the road at 60mph. thankfully i was able to glide to the shoulder of the road. proceeded to turned car off waited momentarily then turned it back on and the fault cleared. continued to drive home, parked it in the garage and the next morning when to start it up. it now reads power steering assist failure and i no longer have power-steering. ford offers a recall for the exact situation i am faced with for models of 2011-2013, request the assistance of the nhtsa to order ford to extend the recall to into the earlier models of the ford fusion to prevent the same occurrence to those less fortunate with the strength to steer a vehicle that looses power steering control midst the drive.
Takata recall, i have a 2010 ford fusion. i have only 62,000 miles on my vehicle. i left work was crossing a busy bridge and lost my power steering and advanced tracking at the same time. as i was turning left onto the bridge in traffic i lost control and almost went into the side of another vehicle. i began getting service power steering and service advance tracking alerts. i have researched this since it happened november 28th 2017. i find there was a recall for the year after 2011. i can not believe my safety was in jeopardy and i am responsible for paying for a defect that has affected many vehicles of the same year. i need help.
Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford fusion. while driving 15 mph and making a left turn, the power steering seized and the power steering, advance track, and tire pressure indicators illuminated. the contact was able to forcefully pull the vehicle over and called for assistance. the vehicle was driven to the contact's residence. the vehicle was not taken to a local dealer to be diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not notified. the failure mileage was approximately 62,000.
Steering froze and would not turn. service power steering warning came on. had to turn the car on and off 3 times to get per steering back. i was in the parking lot exiting while this occurred driving in a straight line, after just turning the car on.
Power steering assist fault message in the message center when backing out of driveway on to the road. power steering failed but was able to pull back into driveway. turned car off and returned later and the error was gone when restarted the car. has happened twice since 11/25/2017. also while driving service advancetrac message appeared. this was before the second power steering assist fault message occurred. took to the ford dealer today but since the codes were gone from the message center they could not diagnose the problem. told to drive the car back to dealer if the message happened again but if i have no power steering this is almost impossible.
Was driving 2010 fusion when front right tire went flat. power steering immediately stopped working, but was barely able to get out of traffic and pull over. after getting car towed home, put computer on car. gave steering angle sensor 1 & 2 malfunction code. dealership states electric steering rack needs replaced but recalls did not cover 2010, but covered 2011 through 2014 for same issue. luckily, no collision occurred. serios safety issue!
Drove my car to work and home friday and everything was fine. saturday morning, i went to start the car and i couldn't move the steering wheel and i had a message that stated "service power steering now" ford is aware of the issue but refused to pay towards the expense of the car, stated the part is not recalled so there is nothing they can do. they charged me $1800 to fix the car, and stated that they would fix one of the recalls but not the other due to lack of parts. ford is very aware of this issue, they even had a class action lawsuit for the 2010 ford fusion power steering. this is not safe, my 8 year old daughter could of been in the car when it went out. i hope this is not taken lightly.
Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford fusion. while driving various speeds, the power steering assist warning indicator illuminated continuously. the vehicle lost power steering ability. the contact called payne weslaco ford at 956-619-6026 and was informed to contact the manufacturer. the manufacturer was notified of the failure and stated that there was no recall on the vehicle. the approximate failure mileage was 144,000.
Electric power steering failed, only manual steering available. two error messages display on the dash screen: "service advancetrac" and service power steering now." problem occurred while in motion on highway, fortunately while no turning was necessary. only upon exiting did the steering failure become apparent.
Power steering suddenly stopped working as i was entering an intersection after a red light half a mile from my home. i was starting to turn left when it went out, leaving me unable to turn the vehicle. i was able to barely dodge another vehicle and continue straight through the intersection and pull into an empty lot. i had to have the vehicle towed to the dealership. the dealership service department said that the steering gear and driver side axle seal need to be replaced. the vehicle has less than 56,000 miles and has never been in a collision.
Wife parked vehicle everything ok, on exiting parking lot service power steering now notification came on unable to turn car stopped called dealer for repair 11/15/2017. had towed to stivers ford lincoln dealer in west des moines, ia. unable to do repairs till after thanksgiving 11/27/17. brought trailer to dealer and picked up transported fusion home and took into shottenkirk ford dealer indianola, iowa 11/21/17. they check codes, no recall on 2010 model but is recall on identical problem on 2011's, replaced defective rack, four wheel alignment. fusion had 74,022 miles, cost on repair $1883.52
I have a 2010 ford fusion 111,000 miles, while driving 45 mph on a side road the power steering stopped working. was able to pull over to the side away from traffic. later the advance trac, and power assist lights came on the dash board. called a mechanic that said i would be able to drive the car but without power steering. after running many test. the steering angle showed left even when u were turning to the right...
Backing out of the driveway three days ago in my 2010 fusion and power steering assist failure message came across my dash. usually turning the car off and on removes the message and returns the steering to normal. it did not do it this time. talked to ford and they told me that my car was made 4 months to early to have a recall on the steering malfunction that was covered under the big lawsuit that was just settled. towed car to local ford dealership and diagnosed it as going to need whole new steering rack assembly. they said cost roughly about $1800 total with parts and labor for a part that is defective and is the same as the the recall for the car model year later. makes no sense to me why this isn't covered in recall also. seems like a cover up on fords part and negligence and bad investigation practices by nhtsa. i have leave coming up in the next three days where i am driving over 600 miles with my pregnant wife and 6 year old daughter. i am glad this didn't happen while in motion like a lot of the other complaints i've been reading. still makes no sense to me why this isn't covered under the recall just made. i refuse to give ford that money for a defective part that isn't my fault it went out because shotty manufacturing. nhtsa, cover all cars and models that have this dangerous defective part and ford do it for free!!! car not fixed.
Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford fusion. after attempting to park the vehicle, the steering wheel required excessive force to steer the vehicle. in addition, the service power steering and traction warning indicators illuminated. the vehicle was not taken to a dealer or repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the contact mentioned that nhtsa campaign number: 15v340000 (steering) applied to the 2011 models, but not his vehicle year. the approximate failure mileage was 105,000.
Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford fusion. while the contact was attempting to make a left turn out of a parking lot at an unknown speed, a vehicle driving 50 mph in the middle lane crashed into the contact's vehicle. the contact and the driver sustained head, back, and neck injuries that required medical attention. a police report was filed. the vehicle was towed to a local collision shop and the bumper was repaired. while attempting to leave the collision shop, the power steering failed to work. the vehicle was not repaired. the dealer and manufacturer were not contacted. the failure mileage was 106,476.
Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford fusion. while driving, the contact had to make a left turn and the steering wheel inadvertently became difficult to maneuver. in addition, the front driver's and passenger's doors inadvertently locked. the contact had to roll down the driver and passenger windows to exit. also, the steering fault warning indicator illuminated on and off. the contact called ford of mansfield at (419) 529-1800 (1515 w 4th st, mansfield, oh 44906), but the dealer was closed. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 72,000.
Advancetrac and power steering assist fault errors come up in the message center. also lost power steering and i now have to manually steer vehicle.the vehicle was in the stationary position and came on when i started the car. the error message has not gone with shutting off and restarting the vehicle.
A error comes up on dash display ' power steering assist error' the bell rings and car locks up. you cannot steer the vehicle. i was lucky i was just pulling out of my street and only go 10 mph. if i was on the freeway this could have been disastrous. i looked it up and come to find out it is a design flaw. 2012 and 2011 have been recalled but not the 2010s?? i just paid off my car and now it's too dangerous to drive please help. this error has happened 3 times
I was driving down the road and the steering lock up and i hit a curb. i was lucky that i was not in any traffic. i have seen many complaints on the electric steering on these cars and not sure why ford want fix the issue before someone get hurt.
Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford fusion. while driving 20 mph, the power steering malfunctioned. the contact stated that the steering wheel seized and the steering wheel could barely turn left or right. green ford in greensboro, north carolina was made aware of the failure and requested that the vehicle be brought in for diagnostic testing. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the issue. the failure mileage was approximately 170,000.
Add me to the list of having to replace the electronic steering assembly. after having the power steering lock up had the car towed to ford dealer. $1,725.00 later they replaced the unit with a re-manufactured unit. recall stared at 2011. this is a 2010 with 65,000 miles. i filed a case with ford. after 3 months i found out they closed the case without contacting me. will follow up, but seems like ford could care less. been driving fords, since 1960.
Power assist error message came on. power steering does not work
Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford fusion. while driving at approximately 25 mph, the power steering suddenly malfunctioned and the steering wheel became very difficult to turn. during the incident, the "advance trac" and "power steering assist faulty" warning messages displayed. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who replaced the serpentine belt, but the failure continued. the local dealer (jack schmitt ford lincoln located in collinsville, il) and the manufacturer were notified of the failures. the failure mileage was 143,000.
Power steering went out while i was driving and i hit a pole on the highway. broke my mirror. no other damage. took my car to ford and they are telling me that i have 2 wrong size tires on my car and that is the reason why my power steering went out. i have receipts from firestone stating that they put the correct tires on my car. ford is telling me that they put on the wrong size. my rack and pinion is faulty. not my tires.
I'm writing to inquire about nhtsa action number: ea17004. this investigation has been going on since november 2017. and before this investigation there was a "preliminary" investigation dating back to september 2016. prior to this there was an original investigation back in 2014 for the exact complaint described which initiated a recall for 2011 and 2012 models but conveniently excluded the 2010 model. is fords play to just wait for as many of these 2010s as possible to be off the road and in the scrap heap before they have to spend money on fixing this? i think its time to make a decision at this point, recall or not. this is ridiculous, this originated in 2014.
Power steering assist fault while driving and upon start completely locking up the steering wheel and the brakes keep locking while driving for no reason causing the car to drag, shake uncontrollably. brakes have been serviced regularly and calipers changes with same results
