We have classified the 704 complaints from 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee about ELECTRICAL SYSTEM into the following categories.
Instrument panel randomly shut down while driving and lights up again. all gauges go to zero and all warning lights come on, then returns to normal. *tr
I was traveling to my daughters when the jeep suddenly veered to the left. crossed center line, hit guard rail and rolled three times down the highway. luckily no cars were coming. my front drivers side fire was wedged in the guard rail. i was upside down and managed to undo my seat belt and crawl out back broken window. the man behind me wrote a letter telling me how he was just following me and i just lost control, he's the one who called 911 and said he was checking for "survivors". this was a sunny june morning, nothing on the road. its like the jeep had a mind of its own. after surgery on my shoulder and trying to get back to work, i was forced to go on disability. i wish i would have known about this recall years ago. my life has changed because of it. the jeep was a total loss of course.this accident happened about 10 miles west of iron river, mi on us-2. this whole thing has changed my life forever.
While driving home on the interstate last night,my dash lights and my head light flash on and off and sometimes they go off and will not come back on. i have taken it to the dealership and they told me they could not find the problem, and i would have to let it get worse and it would have to happen when they were driving it to see what was wrong with it..it needs to be fixed soon before it causes a crash and someone gets hurt. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2006 jeep grand cherokee. while driving at an unknown speed, the vehicle stalled. while parked, the vehicle would sometimes move forward even with the brake pedal depressed. the vehicle was taken to a dealer, but the failure could not be diagnosed. the contact received notification of nhtsa campaign number: 14v438000 (electrical system); however, the part to do the repair was unavailable. the contact stated that the manufacturer exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. the manufacturer was not made aware of the issue. the approximate failure mileage was 65,000.
At approximately 78k miles, vehicle would occasionally start and the only system that was operational was the radio. i cleaned and inspected all connectors that i could access, and problem appeared to go away. then just after the warranty expired (80k miles) intermittent electrical issues have begun to appear. the transmission sometimes "sticks" in 3rd gear, the windshield wipers fail to function and when i attempt to turn them on it crashes the powertrain control module which then begins running random system errors, and the headlights sometimes turn off or fail to come on. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2006 jeep grand cherokee. the contact stated that the instrument panel lights would not illuminate and when trying to use the turn signals, the headlights would illuminate instead. the vehicle had not been inspected by a dealer nor repaired. the manufacturer was contacted and they offered no assistance. the failure mileage was approximately 32,000. the vin was unavailable.
While driving down the road the dash lights will shut off and turn back on without warning. it almost seems like it shuts off but the engine stays running. the radio presets stay programmed. has only done it twice in the last month and i've owned it for 3 years. seems to do it in the extreme cold, but vehicle is fully warmed before i drive it. i usually let it run 20 minutes before i leave on days when it is really cold( usually below 32 degrees fahrenheit) all of the gauge lights shut off, the radio, interior lighting. haven't noticed if exterior lighting goes off as well. *tr
Engine suddenly stops, all lights on dashboard come on, unable to steer properly and control vehicle...breaking doesn't work well either when this happens..on occassion i have been able to re-start the engine immediately but the check engine light comes on and stays on for a few days. has happened while driving, while parked, while idling in traffic...i only have the ignition key in use i do not have a heavy key chain. extremely scary when this has happened on interstate!! please let me know if there is a fix for this problem. i have taken it to a shop several times and they cannot find anything and tell me there are no recalls on my vehicle.
I purchased a certified used 2006 jeep grand cherokee in 2008 with 26k miles. besides a malfunctioning electronic shifter in 2009 everything has been running great until 1/2/2011. at approximately 6:30pm while driving on the freeway at 65mph all exterior lights and interior lights (except for the map lights) began to flicker and then fail. the lights would come back on for a few seconds and then fail. the problem occurred intermittently over the next 30 miles and persistently worsened until i got home when the lights remained off for 15 to 20 seconds at a time. each time it failed while driving i cycled the switch, cycled the brights and tried anything i could to get the lights to stay on. none of these methods worked. upon getting home safely i turned the car off and restarted it only to have the same problem after two restarts. i went to bed and tried it in the morning and the lights worked fine for a 70 mile daylight drive to the dealer. just received word from the dealer that they could not replicate the failure so there is nothing they can do. this vehicle is unsafe to drive and dangerous to others on the road in this condition even if it only happens once every two years. *tr
Had complained to dealership that all lights on the instrument panel will all come on and go off at the same time, and will happen several times in a row. they told me to try wiggling the key in the ignition when it happened again. on said date this happened again while i was driving, but this time my abs engaged, which stopped me in the middle of the road. luckily, i was pulling up to a stop sign anyway. however, had this happened on the interstate, i would be devastated to know what could have happened. also, it sounded as if my starter was trying to start again. i have done some research online and have found may people with the exact same issue who have tried many different things to fix the problem, but it seems as if no one has bee able to resolve the issue. the dealerships are even unable to fix the problem. how should someone proceed with an issue like this? it seems as if the government needs to step in and make chrysler do a recall to fix the problem that so many of us are having.
i bought a 2006 jeep grand cherokee 4x4 limited edition. i bought 4 new tires the day of the purchase. the tpms-tire pressure monitoring system began failing a short time thereafter. the light in the dashboard flashed telling me my tire pressure was low on various tires. my wife was the sole driver of the jeep and she was constantly calling telling me a tire was flat. she worked evening hours. i took the jeep into les schwab for repair. they advised me the price for the sensors was more than the price of the vehicle. i was constantly putting air in the tires and had to reset the vehicle service mileage. *tr
Headlights and dash lights flicker and turn off intermittently on 2006 jeep grand cherokee. vehicle was recently in garage to fix problem. problem could not be duplicated in shop. next day issue occurred again. problem began approximately six months ago. *tr
2006 jeep grand cherokee. consumer requests reimbursement for recall repairs. *smd the consumer stated the costly repair of the shifter assembly did not successfully address the real defective part, the final drive controller module software, which was finally made public in 2013. in early 2010, the vehicle unintentionally shifted from drive into neutral, while the consumer was driving. luckily, she was able to coast out of the roadway into a parking lot. the dealer mistakenly diagnosed the condition as a defective shifter and replaced it. at the end of may 2011, the vehicle once again shifted from drive into neutral on its own. the consumer no longer owns the vehicle. *jb
Headlights and dash lights flicker when on. they will usually remain on for approximately 5 minutes before they start to flicker. at that point the headlights and dashlights will flash off and on rapidly causing oncoming traffic and the traffic in front of my vehicle to panic. the flicker occurs even when the vehicle is turned off an the light control switch is left in the on position. i have not noticed the flicker occurring while the vehicle is turned off and the light control switch is in the off position. this condition could potentially be very dangerous depending upon the timing of the occurrence. i have conducted internet research on this topic and found that many 2005-2008 jeep grand cherokee owners have had this very same problem. even more 2005 - 2008 jeep grand cherokee owners have had electronic problems in general. my particular headlight problem has been attributed to an electronical control module which would cost close to $1,000 to repair or replace. i believe this to be faulty workmanship or the use of a faulty product by jeep. the failure of an electronic control model is not the result of wear and tear. therefore, i believe this should either be admitted and replaced by jeep or made a safety recall. i appreciate your time and consideration.
Tl* the contact owns a 2006 jeep grand cherokee. while driving approximately 40 mph, the vehicle stalled and the warning lights illuminated on the instrument panel. the contact was able to restart the vehicle immediately after stalling. the failure recurred sporadically when driving various speeds. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnostics where the technician was unable to diagnose the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 78,000. updated 02/0812 *bf the consumer stated when the vehicle stalled, he lost the ability to steer the vehicle. updated 03/21/12
Two issues occurred that are likely the result of the same electrical problem with the vehicle. the first is the headlights will intermittently turn off without warning or cause. the second, the more recent of the two problems, is the entire dashboard will light up then power down completely. the vehicle still runs (engine) but all gauges drop as if the vehicle were off, a/c shuts off, radio shuts off, etc. when reported to the dealership they say they've never heard of it, although a brief online search turned up dozens and dozens of similar instances. *tr
After 11/2 hours highway driving. approaching stop light that was red. decelerated, brakes. light turned green when vehicle was at approx 30 mph. on attempted acceleration, engine failed, all electronics dead, no power steering. stopped vehicle, shifted into park, turned off ignition. turned ignition on, started engine, drove away. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2006 jeep grand cherokee. the contact noticed that the air conditioner wasn't cooling the vehicle. the vehicle was taken to the dealer who diagnosed the failure as the wiring connector resistor being burned. the vehicle was repaired. the failure and the current mileages were 48,683.
I have wrecked this jeep two times due to the brakes not functioning as the should in both instances the dash board lights and gauges all shut down prior too the accidents i have had numerous mechanics find nothing, problem still persists done all i can and i am basically going broke on a vehicle i still owe on. can you please help before people start dying from unroadworthy vehicles. *tr
When driving and you hit a bump dash light flash, car shuts down sometimes i've taken all keys, rings ect.off but that don't help key still moves when driving, in june 2015 took it to have 2 recall orders fix which was flash final drive module and the final drive controller module every sense then car is worst off now,now transmission problems pop up that never poped up before this was done at ray laethem. had to buy and older car cause half the time to scared to dri the jeep i paid 15,000 dollars for i just want this jeep to run right and safe or buy it back i'm still waiting for the new ignition.
Purchased vehicle in feb 2009 this has happened numerous times since the first incident approx may 2010. while driving all the lights on the dashboard will turn on and off, all needles on the gauges (rpm, speed, etc.) will go up and down uncontrollably. the heat or ac which ever is on will go on and off, on an off. the all of a sudden it will all stop and be normal again. according to my research, online videos, and after speaking with the representative on the chrysler recall hotline, this is strongly related to the electrical systems: ignition switch recall. i am very concerned to drive this vehicle, i expressed this when i called chrysler, and was never informed of the recall, i found out by hearing this on the news and come to find out my vin# was never registered to me since i purchased the vehicle. the dealership has since closed. since there is no fix in place, i would like a loaner/rental vehicle to be provided as the expense of jeep/chrysler. i don't think this is to much to ask in relation to my life, and safety of myself and family. i am in a trade for a living that requires me to drive my own vehicle to company jobsites, all over my state. *tr
All interior and exterior lights flash as if the car has been restarted, all gauges zero out then return to normal. this has happened several times and can not be replicated during service. car has shut down 2 times when this happens during regular driving speeds. *tr
After 2 hours of highway driving followed by 20 minutes of bumper to bumper crawl. decelerated and hit brakes to make right turn at intersection. engine failed, all electronics dead. stopped, put vehicle in park, started engine and drove away. *tr
While driving in any condition all console lights flash, all gauges bottom out, headlights turn off, engine may sputter *cn
Tl* the contact owns a 2006 jeep grand cherokee. while driving at various speeds, the vehicle would suddenly shut off. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who determined that the cam sensors in the engine were faulty and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired but the failure recurred. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 15,000.
I have a jeep grand cherokee (2006). over the past 5 years, it has intermittently had problems. sometimes while driving and after startup. these problems have always been loss of gauges, flashing lights in dash, what appears to be the traction control or brakes kicking in and the loss of power steering? when this first started happening i thought maybe the computer had been vibrated or jostled and had a glitch. over time it would go away and 6 months or so later happen again! i have done everything in my power to stop this from happening, ie changing parts and trouble shooting the problems to no avail. i thought i had this narrowed down to a rusted connection from a ground wire connected to the block.....wrong again! this morning i had my 4 year old son in the jeep and was taking a left at a busy intersection. i clearly had enough time to make the turn, but as i was turning it sounded like my anti lock brakes were kicking in mid turn with a car coming right at us! i made the turn pulled over on the side of the road. all my gauges were dead, check engine light on and only the gear selector was visible. i have read on many jeep related forums, that this is not only happening to my jeep but many others! while reading i have noticed one thing. in many cases these problems were solved by replacing the ignition switch! after reading this i further researched the problem against recalls. i found that, according to the wall street journal, ny times, usa today and forbes, chrysler is allegedly recalling these vehicles with faulty ignition switches. so i called my local dealer. they looked my jeep up in their database and told me they're were no recalls on my vehicle and that they haven't recalled any vehicles for faulty ignition switches. i would appreciate it if the nhtsa could help with some of these problems and answer some of these question i and many others have. *tr
At approximately 35mph all the lights on the dash starts flashing. the problem is intermittent but predictable. *tr
Harness plug on resistor module for manual fan speed was found partial melted and can be a potential fire hazard if not corrected. *tw
Electrical system: during the dusk\twilight hours all the system lights begin to 'blink\flash' off and on as if there is an electrical short. headlights, dash lights all electrical components flash on and off. this only occurs during 'dusk or twilight' hours. the dealership is unable to replicate the issue. at complete darkness, if i approach a lighted parking lot or establishment in about 3 to 4 minutes the lights will begin to flicker on and off. my thought is some light dimming sensor. again the dealership claims no issues\error codes have been identified. *tr
While driving my exterior & interior lights repeatedly flash on and off. it randomly occurs with no way for me to stop it. jeep informed me that they have no tsb on the issue and nothing can be done until the problem can be duplicated at one of their service dept. a search on the internet ("fix ya " web page )revealed numerous 2006 jeep cherokee owners with the same problem. as of now i am lost to my options. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2006 jeep grand cherokee. the contact stated that all of the lights on the instrument panel would intermittently illuminate on and off. the failure occurred while driving 30 mph and above. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer on several occasions and they were unable to diagnose the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 20,000. the vin was unavailable.
2006 jeep grand cherokee - all safety warning lights as well as engine lights flash on and off, rpm gauge drops, all lights around gear panel light, doesn't seem to know what gear it is in. sometimes it is just the lights on the panel flashing on and off. no codes read when taken to mechanic. put a new batter and alternator in the vehicle. problem is intermittent. may happen a few times in a row and then go away for days or weeks. lost power brakes and steering as well a few times, luckily no accidents resulted due to loss of power. you can hear a clicking noise when the panel lights are flickering on and off. this problem has been occurring for the last year and a half. i had a complete transmission service as well. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2006 jeep grand cherokee. while driving approximately 70 mph, the dashboard failed to illuminate. the failure occurred numerous times while driving. the dealer stated that the automatic car starter was unhooked and caused the failure. the contact received a recall notification for nhtsa campaign number: 14v438000 (electrical system) and was concerned that the failure was related to the recall. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 50,000.
2006, jeep grand cherokee, the ignition switch is bad and causes the headlights and interior lights to go on and off. *tr
I purchased my 2006 grand cherokee in may of 2008. i started having a problem with the headlights flickering on and off and then totally going off about 3 weeks after we purchased the vehicle. we took it back to the dealership while still under warranty and they serviced it to find "nothing wrong." the service person drove the vehicle at night and stated nothing happened. a couple of months later the same thing happened again, we took it to the dealership a second time, and the service person said the same thing again, "nothing wrong." we go almost a year with no problems and the flickering of the head lights and interior dash starts all over again. i would hate for someone to have to die before the manufacturer decides to do something about this problem. i have a 5 year old daughter and a 17 year old son that i transport daily and i refuse to allow him to drive my vehicle because of this problem. hopefully someone will decide to take action concerning the issues with the jeep cherokee. *tr
On at least 5 separate occasions since about 2009, my 2006 jeep grand cherokee has suddenly and lost power and cut off while driving at approximately 20-40 miles per hour. there is no reason that i can confirm causes this and i'm not able to duplicate the defect. i've reported it to pearson (dealer) and they indicated they can't help with an issue that can't be demonstrated or duplicated. this is extremely dangerous to lose all power, even at lower speeds. this issue should be thoroughly investigated to find the root cause. i can confirm that it definitely occurs. in addition, it's reported that starting a jeep grand cherokee may result in sudden, uncontrolled acceleration or movement forward, even when in park. car pool auto wash pushes every jeep product out of the wash tunnel by hand to avoid starting the vehicle for this reason they explained. while sudden acceleration has never occurred to me, there appears to be enough evidence this may warrant further investigation. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2006 jeep grand cherokee. the contact stated that while driving at approximately 60 mph, the ignition turned out of its original position causing the vehicle to stalled. the vehicle was able to restart. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the contact received a notification nhtsa campaign number: 14v438000 (electrical system) however, the part to do the repair was unavailable. the contact stated that the manufacturer exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was unknown.
While driving or in idle vehicle lights on dash board flicker on and off. car loses power momentarily which shuts off radio, air conditioner . also there have been many times while making a turn where the engine shuts off and causes the engine to make a grinding sound when power shuts off momentarily . dealer was contacted about the recall but was told parts remain unavailable
Tl* the contact owns a 2006 jeep grand cherokee. while driving approximately 20 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning. the vehicle was coasted to the side of the road. after restarting, the vehicle, it resumed normal operation. the failure recurred numerous times prior to the recall repair. in 2016, the vehicle was serviced under nhtsa campaign number: 14v438000 (electrical system); however, the failure persisted after the remedy was performed. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 30,000.
If the keys in the ignition shake just slightly, all lights on dash flicker on/off, engine cuts out and comes back on. i've had a problem with this since i bought the vehicle in 12/08 and still happens. i can only have 1 car key in ignition so nothing happens but still does every so often. *tr
2006 jeep gc limited 5.7 hemi, the '4x4' dash light would continue to indicate a failure. after 3 trips to the dealership, they determined\discovered a bad sensor in the rear differential causing the light to illuminate. *tr
Over the last 2 months, my 2006 jeep grand cherokee has completely shut off unexpectedly while driving. on 4 occasions. the first occasion was 9/30 (35,123 miles) i read the manual that indicated that the engine light could mean a variety of things and it suggested that if the light remained on after a couple of uses to call the dealer. the light went off after two cycles. it occurred 3 weeks later. i made an appointment at a jeep dealer to correct the problem. the 3rd time it shut of was on the way to the dealer to have it checked. the vehicle was checked by a dealer who could not offer any explanation for the problem. the 4th occasion was on thanksgiving day.) just prior to the car completely shutting down, i heard an unusual sound under the hood, all gauges failed, and i lost all power causing the car to stop. this was extremely dangerous with three of the occasions occurring at intersection as i was pulling out. fortunately i was able to drift off the side of the road. after drifting off the road and shutting the car off and re-starting the car it would run normally although the engine light remained on. after taking it to the dealer i was told that the problem could not be replicated and nothing could be done. i explained that the problem was very dangerous the dealer said that perhaps if the service tech could drive the vehicle the problem could be diagnosed. the vehicle was left at the dealer for 4 days but the tech could not replicate the problem. the dealer offered no explanation for this extremely dangerous problem. i am now reluctant to drive the vehicle and my wife refuses to drive it for fear it will shut off and cause an accident. the problem again occurred on thanksgiving day. i immediately called the dealer again and explained that it had occurred again. i was told to they were very busy on friday and that i should bring the vehicle in on monday. help i have a vehicle that i cannot safely drive. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2006 jeep grand cherokee. the contact noticed that all of the illuminated components in the vehicle would dim intermittently. she was informed that the lights flickered as if she were flashing them during the day and night. the exterior lighting shut off completely. the interior lighting, specifically the instrument panel, would dim while the vehicle was in motion. the contact would have to manually turn them back on again. the electrical system, however, would still malfunction. she took the vehicle to the dealer on two different occasions and to a private mechanic once, but neither could duplicate or determine the cause of the failures. the manufacturer has not been notified. the current mileage was approximately 31,000 and failure mileage was approximately 30,000.
2006 gc limited 5.7 hemi, on occasion during the hours of 'dusk' all the vehicle lights will flicker\on and off (dash, headlights, radio everything when turned on). i went to the dealership however they were not able to locate the issue. seems to only occur during late hours when the sun is going down. work around is placing the headlights on 'automatic' which resolves the issue. drive me crazy. *tr
Purchased 2006 jeep grand cherokee new. within first 6 months have been taking it bake to the dealer for intermittent lack/stalling. this happens while driving at different speeds and mostly making slight turns or when i begin to turn as well as up and down hill. this has been going on for the last 2 yrs,but most recently has happened alot more offend. i have taken it to the dealer with no result each time. within the last 2 weeks is has stalled at least 7 times. 9/27/08 i was injured from slamming the breaks and fighting the steering to avoid a head on collision at an intersection while starting to make a turn. i did take it to the dealer and again with no result. the day i dropped it off at the dealer it shut down in their lot. i was told that this would have been recorded in the codes, but they told me they found nothing. the next day it stalled while dropping my son off at school. he was with me when i was injured so i can prove it does happen. i did call the dealer back and that was 3 days ago. they will not return my phone call let alone honor my warranty. this car is not safe.*tr
Several incidents of issue with electrical?? lights on dash flash, power loss to near stall condition. inability to steer vehicle. *tr
Driving on the highway and the entire dash board lit up, blank a few times, and then went dark. nothing on the dash board was working (no mph, gas gauge, etc.). after a few minutes of blinking and going dark, everything begins to work again, but the check engine light comes on. this exact scenario has happened multiple times. usually the light will stay on from anywhere between 1-5 days and then go away. i have been dealing with this issue for over a year. in once instance, i was driving around the city going 10-15 mph and this scenario happened and the brakes were not working properly and the car was very hard to turn. everytime i have brought the car to the dealer they try to pull a code and nothing is available for them. at this point i am fed up so i am officially reporting the issue. it is completely unsafe to be driving when this happens, especially when you are on the highway. let's hope something is officially done before anyone gets hurt. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2006 jeep grand cherokee. the contact stated that the entire the instrument panel illuminated and flashed. in addition, the gauges failed to operate. the failure recurred multiple times. the vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the ignition needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired, but the failure recurred. the contact also stated while driving approximately 5 mph, the vehicle stalled. the vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the engine needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the contact received notification of nhtsa campaign number: 14v438000 (electrical system) however, the parts were unavailable to perform the repairs. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 40,000.
Dealer carl burger dodge and chrysler is aware of a defective 4wd warning light (chrysler service bulletin no. 21-014-06 rev a dated nov. 2, 2006), that when i brought my vehicle in to service on december 12, 2007, they demanded to charge me $75.00 (which i actually paid). i objected and raised the issue with both the service advisor and the service manager. they claimed because my mileage was slightly beyond 36,000 miles (37,912 miles to be exact), they had no obligation to diagnose and correct a known manufacturer's defect. this is wrong as a matter of law. *tr
On many occasions my car has stalled out while i am driving. when this happens my power steering goes out and my wheels lock up. it mainly happens when i am going at a slow speed...but on 2 different occasions it has happened on the interstate at 70 mph. i have sent my car in to 2 different 5 star chrysler repair places...both of these places have stated that they weren't able to identify a problem and thus could not fix my car. *tr
