We have classified the 165 complaints from 1999 Honda Accord about ELECTRICAL SYSTEM into the following categories.
The car stalls at any speed or temperature and sometimes refuses to start at all after sitting. the ignition switch recall was performed and replaced previously. now years later the part failed again.
My vehicle quits running for lack of electrical current to the engine!!!!! this happens at random, while driving, after checking everything, including main relay, fuel pump pressure, injectors ect..i found out that this happens to hondas 1998 to 2001, honda motors is aware of defect!!!! the ignition switch is the problem!!!!! the ignition switch hardness is the defect that needs to be replace!!!! honda motors needs to recall these vehicles!!!!!!!
Ignition switch recall on1999 honda accord causes the car to stalls while driving due to ignition switch that had a recall in 2004 before i bought the car. this recall is no longer in effect so the dealer wants to start with diagnostic test which i have had done and it does not show up on that. the first hour is $120. recall number was 02v120000. electrical contacts in the ignition switch degrades due to high electrical current passing through switch when vehicle is started. this stall has happened on freeway leaving me to be in a accident at any time.
1) honda ignition switch: four times between end november and first wk of december: vehicle suddenly stalled while driving in city streets - so dangerous! i have to turn engine off and restart it. need to wiggle ignition key to start engine. 2) -interior lighting does not work when opening doors. -light on clock does not work -panel light ok
My vehicle turned off while i was driving. i was driving about 15 -20 mph on a main st. light lit up on the dash, then all dash lights went out, the power steering stopped working and the brakes stopped as well. i had to slam my foot on the brakes to keep from hitting a vehicle at a light.
Tl* the contact owns a 1999 honda accord. the contact stated that there was a random failure with the park interlock function and the vehicle stalled several times without warning. in addition, the vehicle failed to restart and shifted in and out of park several times. the vehicle was to be inspected and diagnosed by a dealer and independent mechanic. the manufacturer indicated that there was no recall to address the issue. the vin and failure mileage were not available.
Tl* the contact owns a 1999 honda accord. the contact stated that the vehicle was serviced per nhtsa campaign number: 05v025000 (electrical system), but the remedy failed to repair the vehicle. the contact mentioned that the key could not be removed from the ignition after the recall repair. the key was able to be removed after several attempts. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 256,482.
Takata recall i had problems with getting the key to turn in the ignition. it eventually failed. i was informed by a professional that it was the key. i had the key replaced. honda tried to charge me for the key knowing that there was a recall. too, my headlights have always been very dimmed. i have bought several replacements. they still appear very dim.
I was driving on the freeway going at highway speeds when all of a sudden, my engine stalls. i immediately put on my hazard lights and was almost hit by a car behind me as my car was coasting. luckily, i was able to steer my car off to the shoulder as was able to start my car again. in doing some investigating online, it appears the main issue is with the ignition switch. there were a few recalls on the ignition switch which i had gone to the dealer to take care of (year 2002 and 2005). it appears the ignition switch that has been replaced is still faulty. i have around 143k miles on my car when the last incident occurred. i had this occurrence happen a few other times within the past few months, but at slower speeds. i want to report this because i believe this recall replacement part didn't fix the problem and can still endanger the lives of other drivers of this type of vehicle.
Car was in motion driving 70 mph and engine cut out, maintenance required light flashed, power steering locked, car jolted. it did this twice within a matter of seconds and restarted both times. i just purchased the car for my 17 year old and it happened two days after we bought it. i tried to replicate it but could not. i ran the vin looking for recalls before purchase but found none for my vehicle. after this happened i saw all of the complaints regarding ignition switch problems. i took the car back to the used car dealer who has a mechanic onsite and i showed him the complaints i had found that were similar to what happened. i had him remove and inspect the ignition switch. he did find upon observation that it looked like there had been some electrical sparks and i believe he said some corrosion too, and that it was defective. i paid him to put in a new one as this issue is a serious safety issue. i am thankful the failure was only a couple of seconds and that the car restarted, otherwise i'm not sure my daughter would have been able to safely steer the car off the highway at such a high rate of speed and because she is not an experienced driver. the car has only 81,500 miles and i believe only had one owner prior to my purchase. i was so excited to get an accord with low miles, but this is a serious issue and hazard.
My 99 honda accord has started loosing power and shutting down while driving, took to independent mechanic who replaced plugs and wires we have replaced wires twice in less then 6 months but this hasn't fixed the problem. after reading the complaints i see quite a few others have same problem. this is a safety issue and car should be recalled!
Tl* the contact owns a 1999 honda accord. the contact stated that the vehicle stalled numerous times without warning. the vehicle was able to restart but the failure recurred. the dealer was notified of the failure. the vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign numbers: 05v025000 (electrical system), 03v423000 (electrical system) and 02v120000 (electrical system). the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 127,300.
Same issue as everyone else with a 1999 honda accord vin # starting with 1hgcg, was told by honda my vehicle did not fall under the recall. my car will turn off while driving down the road, i've had it happen at 70 mph and i have had it happen at 15 mph. normally will turn off and restart itself (while driving) and the key signal will flash. the past two times my car has completely turned off on the interstate and i had to fight to get over before getting killed. as well as, my car has turned off while in drive as i was slowing down to park and the key could be removed from the ignition. if these were the recalls and i have a 1999 honda i do not understand why my car is not included. i promise i will call everyone i have to, to make this right. i have a child and i can not be stalling while driving down the interstate.
My car has been randomly shutting off while driving for several months. no one could tell me exactly what was causing it. this problem has occurred numerous times including on the interstate. there is no warning other than lights flashing on the dash and then cuts off. i lose my power steering and can barely get it to the side of the road to restart it. nine times out of ten it will restart on the first try but sometimes i have to work with it to get it to start again. i noticed that there are many honda accords that have this problem and there was actually a recall on 97-2000 honda accords. i called honda and they told me my specific vin number is not covered under the recall. ive noticed that there are several people who aren't covered under the recall with 99 honda accords whose vin number begins in 1hgcg just as mine does and are having the same problem. so obviously it is a safety issue that is a manufacturer default. it does not take a rocket scientist to gather that. what will it take to get honda to recall it?

When i'm driving along, the car will suddenly die. no sputter, no nothing, just dead. this happened a few times and i just took it to honda. searching on the internet says that electrical switch seems to be the problem. however, i called the honda dealer at dch kay honda, 200 nj-36, eatontown, nj 07724. they said no complaints or recall on my vin. this is safety issue as it may stop at any time during the driving.

Recall order for ignition switch replacement was never brought to dealer to perform. now that problem has occurred dealership repair claims to have done work on two recall items that were never brought in for repair. i.e., fraudulent claim of replacement work was filed with honda by dealership. claim repair was done 1/28/2006. have all repair records from 2000.

I have a 1999 honda accord and i jus paid to get front headlight wire replaced because i could not use low beam lights only high beam. light is working now but there is a suspension and/or electrical problem i need to check. the heat/air doesnot come on? is this car safe to drive?

On march 3, 2015 my wife's 1999 accord would not start. we had the starter replaced for about $550.00 but the car was still near impossible to start and the engine can cut out at any time once you do have it started. the auto repairman told us the keys made poor contact inside the ignition switch and that was why it was still so hard to start. he taught us a tedious process to start the car but since then when we drive it the engine can suddenly stop running and stopp, also disabling the power steering. the car is no longer safe to drive. it stopped running 4 times on a 10 mile trip today. *tr
Is happening regularly! car is cutting off. play with the ignition switch and car turns on. daughter almost had accident today due to this issue. checked vin and was not on recall list! why?! *tr
Car cuts off at different speeds with no warning. stop car cut off switch and it will start after 1 or 2 attempts. honda had recalled this in 2004 and replaced the ignition switch on car but this one also went bad i. replaced with new ignition switch and have not had this problem so far. *tr
All the lights, radio, dashboard came on, but when i turned the ignition to start it wouldn't turnover. also when i go to slow down or stop the car cuts completely off. it happens more often than it doesn't. *tr
As i was driving my vehicle on the highway, the engine suddenly turned off. as a result, i had to maneuver the car to the side of the highway as i coasted to a stop. during this time it was difficult to steer. i was able to turn the car on again and be on my way. it then happened again several miles down the highway. this was about 5 days ago and it has not happened since. *tr

Vehicle stalls or engine shuts off while driving on roadway. has been happening for several months, but lately has gotten much worse. the last time i drove the car to work it shut-off over 10 times. *tr
My 1999 honda will randomly just quit running. the engine dies and the door locks unlock. it will start right away. from what i've been reading, there was a recall for this exact situation. do you know how i can contact the company to final a complaint? *tr
While driving the vehicle, the engine will quit completely without any warning or indication of malfunction; it just stops. sometimes it will start up again immediately, sometimes multiple attempts where it catches for a fraction of a second and stops again have been required over a period of several minutes. over time, it seemed to become clear that turning the key to the off position instead of attempting a start from acc would almost always result in immediate restart. the issue disappeared over what was a fairly cold winter, but has returned with the warming weather. total number of occurrences: somewhere around fifty or higher. sometimes it would happen numerous times the same day, increasingly with increased temperature, and seemed much more prone to occur when the air-conditioning was in use. the repair shop was never able to capture an obd code with its recording device. as a commuter on rural roads, this has been inconvenient but so far not unsafe, but there is a potential for it occurring under adverse traffic conditions that might be unsafe, e.g., at highway speed with close following traffic on a road with no shoulder. these incidents may or may not be related to two repairs that almost immediately preceded the first occurrence of this problem: 1. the car wouldn't start one day, no electrical output at all was available, though the battery was only a few months old. a local (i.e., non-dealer) repair shop replace the negative battery cable that grounds the battery to the vehicle. 2. timing belt replacement was performed a couple of months prior, again by a local repair shop. *tr
7/8/2013 approaching a stop sign on a flat residential street, the car suddenly died. it restarted right away. the next morning the car died as soon as i put it in gear. again it restarted. on my way home from work that same day all the lights on the dash came on for a second, but the car did remain on, although there seemed to be a second or two where everything felt like it froze up. ever since then, i have to hold the key turned for about 5 whole seconds to keep the car started. if i let go right away, the car immediately dies. then on friday 8/31, all the lights flashed on the dash, and then the car died completely as i was accelerating on the on ramp to the highway. i was able to pull over quickly and fortunately did not cause an accident. after a few minutes the car did restart and i was able to make it home. i called my honda dealer in july after the first incident, and was told they would only look at it for $100 diagnostic fee. i had my local independent mechanic check everything they could think of a few days later , battery, alternator- and the last resort they had was the ignition switch. honda has already had two recalls on my vehicle for ignition switch issues, 2002 and 2005. the honda dealer was very unwilling to check anything this time around and made it very clear that i would be responsible for paying for the diagnostic check , and that did not seem appropriate given the ignition switch issues in the past. *jb
I have serious issues with my honda accord. first, the transmission has failed. it began with it slipping in higher gears when hot and finally failed when it wouldn't shift out of low gear. this transmission is the same transmission that is in the 00-04 honda accords that were recalled. honda refused to offer any type of owner assistance. my expense to repair: $1516.30 second issue: in 2002 the ignition switch was recalled. the car died on the freeway and had to be towed two days after i received the recall notice. honda repaired the vehicle no charge for parts and labor but refused to pay for the towing expense. my cost: $75. now the ignition switch has failed again and honda has refused to replace it at no charge or with any type of owner assistance even though this same part was replaced as part of a recall. i have been given an "estimate" of $275 to repair. freeman honda of dallas replaced the switch under the recall. i've contacted john eagle honda of dallas, on lemmon ave, and left messages for[xxx] the service manager but have not received a return phone call. i spoke with a service consultant who point blank told me my car is out of warranty and they will do nothing to help me. i called honda customer assistance and was told they would not participate in any type of owner goodwill or assistance with either repair. i understand parts fail but these two repairs are known product issues for honda! information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 1999 honda accord. the contact stated that while driving 60 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnosis but they were unable to duplicate the problem. the vehicle was previously repaired under nhtsa campaign number: 02v120000 (electrical system) but the dealer refused to repair the vehicle a second time. the vehicle was not repaired and the manufacturer was notified. the approximate failure mileage was 200,000.
While driving between 40-45 miles an hour, my car shut down. the radio shut off, the whole car shut down! thank goodness no one was behind me. i sat there in shock and tried to restart it, and it started right back up. this has happened twice before, but i was a red light/stop sign. i didn't think anything about it, because i thought i let up a little to much on the clutch. it just quietly shut down. i can't imagine if i was on the interstate with a tractor trailer behind me. i went straight home and googled and found out that there was recalls on electrical parts of switch. called local honda dealer. he stated that many has come through the door over this, but my vin was not part of it. i will contact honda corporation and try my luck there. it just shut down with no warning. unbelievable!! *tr
The engine shuts-off at random times -- on freeway, city streets, stop signs/lights -- idling, accelerating, maintaining speed. likely the ignition switch for which there was a recall, but the recall did not include this vin -- i assume the "early" failure was addressed, but at what age/mileage is this no longer a safety issue? is there some standard age/mileage until which a vehicle should be designed for safety under normal maintenance and after which one should not assume such? *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 1999 honda accord. the contact stated that while driving 40 mph, all of the lights on the instrument panel illuminated and simultaneously, the vehicle stalled. the manufacturer was notified and advised the contact to take the vehicle to a dealer for diagnosis. the contact was informed that the recall repair for nhtsa campaign number: 02v120000 (electrical system) would need to be performed but an interlock lever would need to be purchased and replaced first. the vehicle was repaired however, the failure recurred. the vehicle was taken to a different dealer for diagnosis but the failure could not be replicated. the vehicle had not been repaired. the failure and current mileage was 160,000. the consumer stated the vehicle continued to stall. updated 05/29/13... updated 06/10/13 *bf
Tl* the contact owns a 1999 honda accord. the contact stated that while driving approximately 35 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the electronic ignition switch needed to be replaced. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and stated that the vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 03v423000 (electrical system). the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 132,000 and the current mileage was 133,000. *tr
When traveling at any speed, but primarily above 50mph the car stalls. i will pull the car off the roadway, wait 30 seconds and attempt to restart. at times it will take up to a couple of minutes for the car to eventually start. around the same time as the onset of this problem the car makes a grinding sound when you turn the key to start it. the same sound you would her if you were to try and turn the key to the start position after it is already started. the amount of pressure you put on turning the key does not seem to make a difference. the stalling problem has me the most concerned for myself and others. *tr
