We have classified the 165 complaints from 1999 Honda Accord about ELECTRICAL SYSTEM into the following categories.
My honda accord ex 1999 engine stops running with in 2miles of the place it was started. if you let it warm up it will run fine. has been to 2 different honda dealers 12 times with no resolve. *tr
Car stalled when at complete stop to make a turn on5-24-07, started back up immediately and drove fine. car stalled while making a turn into a pharmacy parking lot on 5-25-07, started right back up and drove ok after that. i was thirty miles from home to go to the doctor so i started home on i-44 in a rain storm. i was driving 65 mph in the inside lane when the car stalled. thought i was going to die. this on a friday afternoon on a holiday weekend. was fortunate enough to be able to guide the car over the outside lane of traffic and get it off the road. started right back up. i did turn off the ac and prayed all the rest of the 20 miles or so that i had to go to get home, which i did. called a local repair shop that i have used before and being a holiday weekend, could not get it in before tuesday, 5-29-07. found to be ignition switch. was told to call honda dealership in springfield, mo and was told was fixed after recall. in looking at the paper work i had from previous owner, it had been done at 67375 miles and again had problems and was done at 83050 miles again. they would not help me at all at the dealership so i had no choice but to pay for it myself. the car now has 103596 miles on it. so that tells me that these ignition switches are good for 20,000 or less and my life was in jeopardy because of this faulty switch. now how long can i drive and be safe before this happens again???? the very least that honda could do is pay for this but more important fix the switch so that people do not think they are going to die like i almost did. i am 69 years old and this is a strain mentally and financially. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 1999 honda accord. the contact stated that when he starts the vehicle, it stalls after being driven approximately two blocks. the failure also occurs while driving 70 mph and in hot weather. the dealer discovered that the failure noted in recall # 02v120000 (electrical system:ignition:switch) was the cause of the contact's failure. however, the vehicle is not included in the recall. the vehicle was repaired on april 24, 2006, but the failure has recurred. the current and failure mileages were 166,000.
Tl*the contact owns a 1999 honda accord. the vehicle shut off twice while driving 20 mph. the vehicle also shut off on four more occasions. the recall repair was performed per recall#02v120000 concerning the electrical system: ignition switch . the dealer agreed that the failure was related. the failure mileage was unknown. the current mileage was 16000.*ak
The 1999 honda accord was subject to a recall in summer 2002 for an ignition switch defect. i had the recall taken care off in october 2002. now, in 2007, the same part was defective again. the cost to me to have this fixed wasa $293. the dealership was not willing to help w/ the cost because of the time lapse. honda refused to look at it. i was told that a recall part was only repaired once a period! any additional repairs to that part were the responsibility of the consumer. my position was that if the part was defective in design, this should still be handled as a recalled item. i have no true way of knowing if the part i received in 2002 was indeed a redesigned part, or simply the same part in the vehicle at that time. i am asking specifically for all of the charges to be refuned or at the minimum some part there off 1/2 to be shared by both parties. the ignition switch should not fail under normal driving. car stalled 3 times in traffic with no warning due to this defect. *ak
While driving, my car will stall. i then have to jiggle the key to start the car up. sometime it takes several times to get it going while in the middle of traffic. it occurs on almost a daily basis and occurs while stopped a light to even more frightening while driving in four gear. while this has yet to cause an accident, the possibility is very high. i researched this problem and found that there was a recall in 2002 (#02v120000). i called honda to find out why i was never notified or why the deal did not fix during my countless routine maintenance visits. out of 1,000,000 recalls i was told my vin was not part of the recall. this is an obvious issue that has been documented for the year of my car, but i am being told it wasn't part of the recall. this is very dangerous and i am sure there are others with the same problem. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 1999 honda accord. while driving 65 mph on a clear day the vehicle decelerated and the engine stalled with no warning indicators. the contact restarted the vehicle and pulled to the side of the road. approximately 10 minutes later the failure was duplicated while driving 65 mph. the failure occurred three times that day. the dealer stated that the ignition switch needed to be replaced, and informed the contact of recall # 02v12000 in 2002 for the electrical system: ignition switch. the vehicle was repaired ,and the contact was required to pay $143.52. the current mileage is 91,500 , and failure mileage was 91,000.*ak
Tl*the contact owns a 1999 honda accord. the contact stated that the vehicle suddenly shut off while driving 40 mph. all indicator lights illuminated, and the vehicle finally restarted. the vehicle was brought to a local mechanic ,and diagnosed as needing a new ignition switch. the vehicle was included in a recall for the ignition interlock lever, which was replaced in april 2006. the ignition switch was replaced due to a previous recall. however, the contact stated that was incorrect. the dealer refused to repair the vehicle for free. the current and failure mileage were 148000.*ak
Tl*- while driving on the freeway at 60 mph when the 1999 honda accord stalled. as he made his way over to the shoulder the car started back up. the vehicle stalled six times , then it would automatically start back up. the speed was not a factor in the failure. the dealer repaired the vehicle at a cost of $400.00. the vehicle had a nhtda recall 02v120000 repairs for ignition done. also, he called the honda manufacturer, and the case number wasd n032007-02-2101897.*ak
Check engine light came on. had the dealer check for the code which came up as p1491, egr valve issue. there is documented recall/note for this major design defect part, but only for 8yr/80k miles. i called american honda and asked for "good faith"/if they would pay for the repair. am/honda refused my request. my 99 accord ex v6 has 130k miles. this is a known documented design flaw. emission parts should last the life of the car. had to shell out $300 for that repair. i have owned 7 other honda's plus this car. this is the first time i have had this type of issue. american honda needs to do better. i am seriously considering changing car brands, possibly switching to toyota. *jb
Engine shuts down while driving. this seems always to occur within a minute or so after the anti-lock braking system light comes on. otherwise i have no way to predict when it will happen, and it has occurred in a variety of traffic conditions including while driving at high speed on express or freeway lanes. i have taken the vehicle to the dealer three times with this complaint and they deny that anything is wrong or that they can fix it. the incident date reported here is only the most recent occurrence. *jb
[xxx] november 21, 2006 i was driving on a freeway, and i noticed smoke streaming from the top of the steering column. i took the exit off the freeway. the car was losing power, and jerked when i gave it gas. i pulled over and called the tow truck. the car was towed to marin honda, a nearest dealer. november 24, 2006 they tested and found the electrical portion of the ignition switch had failed. they replaced it but at the same time the (trans gear selection) light began to flash. the service advisor said that it's a completely different problem. marin honda charged us $205 for the replacement of ignition switch. november 24, 2006 ever since the ignition switch was replaced, the trans gear selection begins to flash when the engine is on. and it makes a clunk sound and the whole car shakes when the gear is shifted to reverse or drive. i called the marin honda service advisor and said the transmission problem must be related to the ignition switch replacement, but he was adamant that ignition switch has nothing to do with transmission. he said it is pure coincidence that both the ignition and transmission had problems at the same time. november 28,2006 december 1, 2006 the mechanic at petaluma honda said that the range sensor is malfunctioning and there are a few wires dangling which may be why the cruise control is not working. they recommended that we take the car back to marin honda. i drove the car to marin honda. december 2, 2006 eddie parnell, service manager at marin honda said that they've replaced the range sensor but still has the same problem. he thought it could be the transmission. he said that they continue checking. december 9, 2006 after eight days, jack, service advisor at marin honda, called and said that the transmission has to be replaced. he said that we will have to pay half of the cost. *nm updated 07/11/2012 *js information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6)
I was driving back from sf to our home in santa rosa, and i noticed smoke streaming from the top of the steering column. then the odometer dropped from 65 to 0, went back to 65, then fluctuated. as i took the exit off the freeway, the car was losing power, and jerked when i gave it gas. i pulled over and called the tow truck. the engine did not start when the tow truck driver tried it, although it cranked. the car was towed to marin honda. they tested and found the electrical portion of the ignition switch had failed. they replaced it but at the same time the d4(trans gear selection)light began to flash. the service advisor said that it's a completely different problem, and that we should take the car back to the mechanic who replaced the trans fluid 7 weeks ago.(my wife told the customer service advisor that we had the trans work done a couple of months ago when it fact it was just changing fluid as part of regular maintenance). marin honda charged us $205 for the replacement of ignition switch. the d4 starts flashing when the engine is started and shift to any one of gears. and it makes a big clunk and the whole car shakes when the gear is shifted to reverse or drive. i called marin honda cust advisor and told him it must be related to ignition switch replacement, but he's adamant that it has nothing to do with it. when we checked your website and looked under "recall" for 1999 accord, we found it had ignition sw recalls in three different years, 2002, 2003, and 2005. ignition switch(2002), cylinder wear, collar, plate latch(2003), interlock function(2005). could trans range sensor ckt malfunction be caused by heat from the ignition wiring burning out? *nm
Dt*: the contact stated at various speeds or while stopped, the vehicle stalled without warning on numerous occasions. the vehicle restarted each time, and was taken to the dealership where the starter was replaced. the dealer replaced the ignition switch. updated 12/05/06. *jb

Tl*the contact owns a 1999 honda accord. the ignition switch would be either difficult to start or would not start at all. the vehicle stalled each time it was started. the ignition switch has failed twice. the vehicle was repaired under a safety recall the first time. the contact was informed that her vehicle had already been repaired under the safety recall, and was out of warranty. two nhtsa campaign id numbers were referenced: 02v120000 (electrical system:ignition:switch) and 05v025000 (electrical system: ignition: switch). the powertrain was unknown. the current mileage was 183,144 and failure mileage was 149,227.
My husband and i bought a 1999 honda accord ex in 2002. not long after buying the car we noticed that the car acted sluggish when going from a stop. it wasn't that much of a problem so we didn't do much about it other than adding heet to the gasoline thinking we had bad gasoline. then we started noticing a sort of grinding noise when we would start the car which came from the key ignition. the car wouldn't start so we would try again and then it would start. this year 2006 we started having problems with the car stalling when we would stop at stop signs. we took the car to a mechanic and we paid for new spark wire and plug. soon after the car started stalling as we were driving down the highway! we immediately took car to a honda dealership where we were told our catalytic converter needed to be replaced! my husband didn't think this was the problem so we didn't have it replaced. the car kept on getting worse almost causing a couple of accidents when it would quit going down the highway. we then heard of a recall on 1999 honda accords through consumer reports. we made an appointment with the honda dealership again but were told we would have to pay for the repair since our car wasn't included in the recall! we called honda corp to find out why it wasn't included and were told they recalled only certain makes and models and ours wasn't one of them. we of course went ahead and had the ignition switch replaced. we can't understand why honda didn't have our model and make recalled when we could have been in a serious accident. at the very least we should have been told of a problem so we could have repaired it right away. we did keep the ignition switch. we just had the car repaired but haven't had any problems with it stalling. *nm
Dt*: the contact stated the vehicle stalled suddenly while stopped at an intersection. prior to this incident there was a recall performed on the vehicle nhtsa campaign id # 05v025000; electrical system: ignition: switch. 1,000 miles later, the vehicle stalled suddenly in traffic. the dealership determined the ignition switch was bad and replaced the switch.
{nhtsa recall 02v120000}. my vehicle exibited the exact symptoms described in this recall, yet honda dealerships advised my vin was not included in the recall. therefore, i had to pay for replacement. i still have the defective part. how can i very it is the same as the one recalled in order to get reimbursement.
Tl*the contact owns a 1999 honda accord. while driving at any speed, the vehicle would shut off without warning. the dealer stated that the ignition switch assembly needed to be replaced. the dealer stated that her vin was not included in recall # 02v120000 (electrical system:ignition:switch). the contact felt that her vehicle should be included. as of july 10, 2007, the vehicle has not been repaired. the current mileage is 109,000 and failure mileage was 89,000.
On at least two separate occasions, the engine on my 1999 honda accord spontaneously quit while driving down the road. it then restarted immediately. on at least two other separate occasions, the engine would appear to start, but would quit immediately when the key was released from the start position. the cause of the problems was diagnosed by the dealer's service department as a faulty electrical part in the ignition switch. i have learned that some honda models manufactured during the same time frame as my vehicle have been recalled for this very problem, but i was informed that my vehicle was not part of this recall. considering the history, it sounds as if not all of the problematic cars have been identified and/or recalled. the problem is clearly a safety issue. losing power to a vehicle while driving at highway speeds could lead to catastrophic consequences. as a result, i feel that my 1999 honda accord should have been a part of that recall. fortunately, i was able to identify and correct this problem at my expense before it caused an accident. *nm
Over the last two months, my accord ex has stalled numerous times while driving on highways, major streets, and a couple of times in the middle of major intersections. not only does it stall, but it is very difficult to start up again. i sometimes have to sit wherever i may be for 10-15 minutes while trying to start up again. when i took it to the dealer last week to have the recall on the ignition switch taken care of, i was informed it was already done in october 2002. yet, they told me my problem was a bad ignition switch. they proceeded to tell me that honda has no obligation to fix it since they have already replaced it once. when i complained that 3 1/2 years was an unusually short life for an ignition switch, especially after a recall, i was given the honda customer service number to call and complain. upon calling, i was again told that honda has no obligation to do anything. i continued to complain. finally, they told me they would file a case for individual review. today, i received the decision that my case does not qualify as a "goodwill case" because my car does not receive its maintenance at the dealer. (why should i when i can get the same work done for 1/3 to 2/3 of what the dealer charges.) i told the customer service rep, chris, that apparently the switches honda furnished the dealers for the recall parts were as defective as the original and honda does not want to take any responsibility for their actions or for possible effects of them. he did not disagree, but maintained his stance that they had no obligation since they fixed it once and i don't have my car repaired at the dealer. i don't understand how policy for "goodwill" cases can supersede safety issues. i strongly believe that honda should pay for replacement of the switch. they are flat denying any responsibility for a problem that can and probably already has resulted in serious injury. *jb
I own a 1999 honda accord ex and am the original owner. this summer, my car has been difficult to start during hot weather. the car gives a healthy crank but will not fully turnover. usually after waiting for the weather to cool down, the car then starts without any problem. *nm
Tl*the contact owns a 1999 honda accord. the contact stated while driving 10 mph, the vehicle suddenly shut off. the contact stated this happened several times while driving. nhtsa recall campaign number: 02v120000 (electrical system:ignition:switch) was related to the failure; however, the manufacturer informed the contact that the vehicle was previously repaired under the recall prior to purchasing the vehicle. the contact stated the repair had not remedied the failure and could potentially cause a major crash to occur. the failure mileage was 112,000.
The car has had difficulties starting and stalled out numerous times while driving. this is an extremely dangerous condition and can cause an accident. this exact problem was highlighted in a recall by american honda for 1997-2000 honda accords dated may 23, 2002. they suggested in the recall that the ignition switch should be replaced. i took the vehicle to honda and was told that the vehicle's vin [xxx] did not fall within the category of this recall that affected over 1.3 million cars. my problem is the exact issue that is outlined in the recall notice. i spoke to american honda and they set up a case [xxx]. they would not cover the cost of the repair even though this is a manufacturing defect that can cause serious injuries or death if the car stalls. as indicated this car has already stalled numerous times. i request that you require american honda to cover the repairs of this issue. *jb updated 07/16/2012 *js information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6)

Mileage at start of problem,, app 60,000 now 130,000 in 08! i bought my 99 accord with 56,000 miles in 2003. i was called about the recall on the ignition switch, and honda replaced it for free, although at that time i was not having any problems. ok i started having problems with my car stalling. first time was on i40 going app 75. i was in the outer freaking lane and it just turned off. i lived with this very freaking hazardous problem for a long time because i didn't trust honda and money (just note one of the phone calls from honda the man told me he thought it was my ignition switch again and that they wouldn't be responsible for the cost of repair this freaking time but later decided it was something else,!)i was in college taking my emt practicals with an ems system and was having to drive to another county and be in contact via cell phone with honda, and borrow my dads truck!! they had my car for days and keep calling and asking if one of there mechanics could drive my car to lunch ,, and if they could take it home over night and so on, and finally said it wouldn't stall for them!!!!! i was '!@#$%! they did another diagnostic test of 75$ and my check engine light wasn't even on! they also said i needed new spark plugs, i had new spark plugs and im not an idiot,, there was nothing absolutely nothing wrong with the ?!@#$% things. they also eventually decided that i needed my fuel system cleaned, because they really didn't know what to do and this is what they said themselves! they told me they wouldn't charge me for the diagnostic fee if i got the 120$ new spark plugs, mine were new and working very well. so of course i had no option. after reading s few complaints here and on other sites, i am seeing that they totally took me for over 500$ and that my problem was in my ignition switch,, im wondering if they snuck and replaced it again behind my back just to charge me for other '!@#$% they didn't do. i hate honda i hate honda,, i want some ?!@#$% justice. *tr
