Recently reported ELECTRICAL SYSTEM problems on 1999 Honda Accord

While driving the vehicle, the engine just quits. there is no stuttering, stalling, or engine misfires, it quietly just quits. the radio, heater fan, brake lights still work but not the signal lights nor the dashboard indicators. after a few hours troubleshooting, i realized that if i wiggle the lower of five wires on the ignition switch, the instrument panel indicator will return to functioning properly and the car will then be able to start. while the engine is running, if i wiggle the same wire, the engine and instrument panel will not operate. *tr

1999 honda accord repeatedly has sudden loss of power while driving. symptoms are exactly the same as those surrounding previous recall suggesting an ignition switch failure. local dealer indicated the recall service was previously completed. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 1999 honda accord. while driving 60 mph, the ignition switch moves and caused the vehicle to stall. the contact pulled over and it took five minutes to restart the vehicle. the vehicle was taken to a local repair shop and the mechanic stated that the failure was the ignition switch. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer who stated that the vehicle was not included in recall 02v120000 (electrical system: ignition: switch). the manufacturer had not been notified. the failure mileage was approximately 142,000.

Driving car down the road and the engine shuts off. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 1999 honda accord. while driving approximately 50 mph the rpms decreased to zero and the power steering failed. the contact turned the vehicle off, removed the key from the ignition and restarted the vehicle. the failure occurred intermittently approximately five times while driving various speeds. the contact stated there was a nhtsa recall campaign id number: 02v120000 (electrical system:ignition:switch) which could be related to the failure. the manufacturer stated the vehicle was not included in the recall. the vehicle was not taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 105,000.

While driving the vehicle, the engine just quits. there is no stuttering, stalling, or engine misfires, it quietly just quits. the radio, heater fan, brake lights still work but not the signal lights. fortunately, i live in a semi-rural area so traffic did not present a problem but on a busy freeway or in heavy city traffic the consequences could be deadly. imagine passing a car and all of a sudden, no engine!!!! this has happened over the last 6 months for us and sees to happen regularly on warmer days, but occurs either driving 70mph on the freeway or just turning the car into a parking spot. the situation is that very situation to the case at http://www.visualimpressions.ca/switch/ and we're planning to get the switches replaced. i was going to spend a lot of money to get the car looked at and fixed by guesswork without realizing it was a defect in the honda model. we own a 1999 honda accord ex. please share this defect with other consumers of the vehicle as it was very inconvenient and dangerous for us. to restart the car while in motion, i put the car into neutral and turn the key to start up risking the car more by having a horrible scratching sound. luckily this works in the meantime while i find the wires, however i wish i'd known about the defect ahead of time. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 1999 honda accord. the contact was driving approximately between 55-65 mph when the engine stalled without warning. the vehicle was towed to his residence. the vehicle was driven after the first failure occurred and the failure continued to occur intermittently. the contact stated that nhtsa recall campaign id number 02v120000 (electrical system: ignition: switch) was related to the failure; however, the dealer and manufacturer informed him that his vin was excluded from the recall. the contact experienced the identical failures as mentioned in the recall. the vehicle had not been repaired when the complaint was filed. the failure mileage was approximately 125,000.

I have a 99 accord ex. i have been having problems with the car stalling at any speed . after seeing all the problems online and their own tech's telling me it is an ignition switch , i thought they would help. i have contacted honda many times and they were no help at all. i know of the recall on the ignition switch but they said my accord is not on the list. i have worked for honda for 15 years and always backed there cars but that didn't matter to them, i guess that's how they treat their employees. i'd rather have a toyota . *tr

Ignition switch failure on 1999 honda ex accord...my vehicle shuts off while driving on the highway or regular roads.. you have a large recall on this vehicle but my vin is not on the list..numerous individuals have the same problems as the recalled vins but you allow honda to exclude the repair..you are to blame whenever people are killed or injured.. your job is to protect the public not honda....recall was in 2002. *tr

Vehicle shifts down while driving....had switch replaced and still stops while driving intermittently. the fix is the main relay under the dash....$55 fix cost me $700 plus as honda said it was the switch the egr and wanted to hook up electrical system.....only cost $55 for main relay and can easily pop in and out...c'mon honda, driving and then car shutting down while driving>>>>>@#$%^&*().......would love to see how honda execs would feel if their family was in such a car and it happens with an 18 wheeler right behind you on the highway and you cant switch lanes as you cant accelerate as the engine is shut off! *tr

1999 honda accord - while driving the vehicle, the engine just quits. there is no stuttering, stalling, or engine misfires, it quietly just quits. it is so dangerous that you have no control over the steering and you are driving on 70 miles per hour on a highway. there are no indications that it will stall, with a truck right behind you, only god can save from the death situation. *tr

Engine to stall without warning, increasing the risk of a crash. upon investigation, i discovered on the internet that there was a recall notice issued for this exact item in june 2002 (and the recall item was fixed by previous owner in october 2002. the dealer and honda of america both told me that if the recall had been completed, they are no longer responsible, even though evidently the repair has the same defect originally identified in the recall. below is a copy of the recall notice: recalls for the 1999 honda accord electrical & lights: electrical system:ignition:switch campaign number: 02v120000 dates manufactured: 05/1998 to 08/1999 number of vehicles affected: 1,000,000 model years affected: 1997, 1998, 1999 date owner notified: 06/2002 defect summary: on certain sedans, coupes, hatchbacks, and sport utility vehicles, electrical contacts in the ignition switch can degrade due to the high electrical current passing through the switch when the vehicle is started. consequence summary: worn contacts could cause the engine to stall without warning, increasing the risk of a crash. corrective summary: dealers will replace the ignition switch. owner notification began june 14, 2002. owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact honda at 1-800-999-1009 1-800-999-1009 or acura at 1-800-382-2238 1-800-382-2238 . recall notes: customers can also contact the national highway traffic safety administration's auto safety hotline at 1-888-dash-2-dot 1-888-dash-2-dot (1-888-327-4236 1-888-327-4236 ). *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 1999 honda accord. while driving at 35 mph, the vehicle suddenly lost power. the contact referenced recall 02v120000 (electrical system:ignition:switch) when he called the manufacturer but was informed that the vehicle was not included. the contact called the dealership but was offered no assistance. the contact also stated that when the vehicle was in gear, the key was able to be taken out of the ignition. the contact was awaiting a callback from the dealer for a possible solution. the current and failure mileages were approximately 85,000. updated 10/27/10. *lj

I have a 1999 honda accord lx and while passing a transport the engine suddenly died at 140km/hr. i put the car in neutral but it didn't start,so as we slowed down another transport which was coming up behind us to pass the slower transport as well then started honking the horn and we could nothing but wait till the transport we were attempting to pass got further ahead of us so we could pull over to shoulder and allow the transport behind us to get by. it was a very dangerous scary situation. the car did restart after several attempts. we had just had the ignition changed under the recall about two weeks prior to this. we have recently removed any unnecessary keys and used only the honda key and it has not quit since. *tr

Driving on highway at 75 miles an hour - check engine light flashed - all dashboard lights flashed and car died...barely made it to side of the road without getting hit. car was towed, diagnosis was bad ignition switch. i just searched web and found there was a recall in 2002. *tr

While driving on i-75 south bound all of sudden my car (1999 honda accord) stalled, immediately i put the car in neutral and moved to the shoulder, i realized this was an issues with my ignition switch. i could hold the ignition key and drive. i called a tow truck and he took me to the nearest mechanic who said there was a recall on the ignition switch. he gave me temporary fix that would get me home and i could talk to my honda dealer. the issue is if there was a recall and if was fixed (next my dealer told me that my recall was fixed) why did it occur again. was the fix done during the recall was not good enough? is there a really an problem with ignition switch? i had the car fixed at the dealer again. *tr

While driving down the road engine and other electrical components shut off. it was determined the ignition switch was bad. it had been replaced previously under recall. dealer refused to fix again without payment. this hazard presents a potential for serious injury or worse. *tr

Occasionally the car has died while driving on city streets or interstate. the tach drops immediately to zero and i think all or most of the dash lights come on like they would with the key in the start position. when i try to restart the car, it starts and runs for about one second then dies again. sometimes, it will take four or more attempts before it will keep running like normal. it does this when the car is cold or hot and has done this in intersections. there was a recall for this problem (nhtsa no. 02v120000) for 1999 honda accords, but honda says my vin was not included, therefore i am not covered. *tr

I own a 1999 honda accord. it will periodically stall while i am driving. i believe it is an electrical failure of some sort because some of the dash lights go out and it just quietly stalls. this ha happened in town, in intersections, on the highway...it is scary and dangerous. it happens randomly and with no pattern. my mechanic says he can't find the problem. i found a description of the same problem online and it said it was a sensor in the ignition. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 1999 honda accord. the contact stated that the ignition switch had been replaced twice under recall 03v423000 (electrical system: ignition: switch) but the vehicle still stalled. when this failure occurred, the power steering and brakes failed. the dealer agreed to replace the switch again but the contact was still concerned that it may not fix the problem. the failure mileage was approximately 113,000. the current mileage was approximately 113,500.

Tl* the contact owns a 1999 honda accord. the contact stated the vehicle was stalling intermittingly without warning. the contact took the vehicle to the dealer and was told that the failure was caused by the ignition. the dealer stated there was a recall under nhtsa campaign id number: 05v025000 (electrical system: ignition switch), but the contact's vehicle was not included. the failure mileage was unknown, but the current mileage was 147,000.

As i was driving in the fast lane on the highway late last night my honda accord lost all electrical power for about 15 seconds and then turned back on in gear. during this time i had no engine power. as i was pulling off the freeway this occurred again for about 20 seconds. since taking the car to the dealer this morning this problem occurred 3 more times. the dealer seemed familiar with the problem and recognized it as being related to a 2002 recall of the 1999 accord v6. the dealer then replaced the wiring associated with the ignition switch that had previously been fixed in the recall. this seems to have corrected the problem. *tr

My car shut off three times on the way home. the green light on the dashboard displaying a key symbol came on each time it shut off. i called honda and they said that there are no recalls. but after looking on your sight there was a recall on the ignition switch. how can i get honda to fix the problem they say does not exist? *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 1999 honda accord. the driver stated that her vehicle was parked. the driver was able to insert the key into the ignition; however, the vehicle failed to start. the driver was able to start the vehicle after several attempts. the dealer cleaned an unknown component on the vehicle and the vehicle began to function normally for a short time. the vehicle was at the dealership when the complaint was filed. the failure mileage was 89,000. the current mileage was 98,000.

1999 honda accord lx sedan engine just stalled while driving. i was able to start the engine again after pulling over. check the internet and everyone pointed to ignition switch. i replaced the switch and will keep an eye on the car. dangerous situation when your car stall while driving. *tr

My honda1999 barley has 79,000 on it, im second owner. i bought it when it had only 37,000 mil. on it. the car is already having transmission problems. it jerks when driving and coming to a stop, like a pop jerky feel. my cooling system had problem in 2010 oil going into my radiator. and know i have electrical problem. the car at times would go off. 79,000 i cant believe it. you would think this my car was a ford with their older modules. known to have engine problems after 70,000. this is crazy. i have all papers from first owner, never realized till reaching the chaos of my engine. that my car as well was a recall. i have the documents. *tr

I have a 1999 honda accord lx. the ignition switch had previously been replaced under recall. after the car kept cutting off in heavy traffic i took the car to the honda dealer. they said the ignition switch was bad again and would not replace again under recall. this is a safety issue and someone will be injured or killed because of this defect. after paying dealer the car was fixed. i should not have been charged for this as it was a known defect. *tr

My 1999 honda accord ignition switch was under recall and was fixed in 2004 however again the ignition switch problem almost killed myself and two children when i was driving on the highway and stalled while i was going 65 mph. i could not get the car to restart. i took it to a local dealer who said that again the ignition switch is bad in my vehicle. when this occurred the safety hazards and flashers on my vehicle also failed so there was no way to warn anyone on the road that there was a problem. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 1999 honda accord. the contact stated that his vehicle had a faulty ignition switch. the vehicle would not start after he made several attempts repositioning the key. once he got the vehicle started he drove to the dealer but his vehicle was not included in the recall. the vehicle was not repaired. the honda manufacturer was not contacted. the failure mileage was 224,000.

Tl*the contact owns a 1999 honda accord. while driving approximately 50 mph the entire instrument panel and radio failed, and then the engine stalled. the engine restarted after several attempts. nhtsa campaign id number 02v120000 (electrical system;ignition:switch) is related to the failure; however, an authorized dealer confirmed that the recall was repaired with the previous owner. the contact stated that the recall repair was insufficient and the vehicle has not been repaired. the failure mileage was 186,500. the current mileage was 187,000.

My son's 1999 honda accord experienced intermittent ignition failure, forcing him to pull over to the side of the freeway, and then attempt to re-start the car. this occurred randomly over a period of about a month, and was very unsafe. the car has about 117,000 miles on it, and was subject to an earlier recall campaign 02-031, which resulted in changing the ignition switch several years ago at about 52,000 miles. now the replacement switch failed. he took it to honda of el cerrito in the bay area and they charged him about $100 and told him they couldn't figure out the problem. i purchased an ignition switch from a discount honda parts supplier over the internet for about $50, and replaced it myself. i found several internet web sites that described this problem in detail, and i feel that there are many others experiencing the same thing. i have a 99 accord and a 92 civic which both experienced ignition switch failures, so i had a pretty good idea of what was going wrong, even if the dealer was not being very smart about it. this is very annoying and dangerous. i wish the dealers were more helpful. i spoke with american honda in torrance, and they told me that since the vehicle was repaired as part of the recall campaign, that if the part failed again, it was my responsibility. why can't they make an ignition switch that holds up longer than 50,000-60,000 miles? the last time it failed was while i was driving through placerville, california on highway 50 on october 24, 2009. the first time it failed was around the beginning of the month. *tr

Vehicle shuts off during driving, then difficult to start again. until remove key from ignition, then put back and retry. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 1999 honda accord. the contact stated that while driving 65 mph the vehicle stalled without any prior warnings. the vehicle has not been inspected by a technician to determine the cause of the failure. the current and failure mileages were 116,000. bl updated 11/23/10 *bf the problem was diagnosed as ignition switch failure. updated 11/23/10

While approaching a stop light at north loop 1604 west on 9/26/09, the engine stalled without warning. i had to sit there in the middle of the street and struggle to get it started again and hope no one came behind me. while driving on university campus, the engine stalled out of the blue. it happens about 6 times per day while driving the vehicle on busy city streets. the consequences are extreme stress and fear for mine and others' safety because i don't know when this vehicle will just stop on me. this exact issue is described in nhtsa campaign id number: 02v120000. i called honda and was told by on operator that there is no such issue with the 1999 honda accord and there was only one recall on this particular vehicle, yet i found over 15 recalls on the 1999 honda accord by searching the nhtsa website. while it may be true that not all of those recalls may apply to the 1999 honda accord that i drive, nhtsa campaign id number: 02v120000 is exactly what is happening to my car when i am driving it. *tr

1999 honda accord. consumer writes in regards to the faulty ignition switch recall. *smd the consumer stated the ignition switch module was replaced per the recall. however, the replacement part failed, too. the ignition module was replaced a total of three times. *jb

1999 honda accord occasionally shuts off without warning while driving. all car functions fail (power steering, power brakes, turn signals...). will need to replace ignition switch according to dealer. for some reason dealer says nhtsa campaign id number: 02v120000 does not cover my vehicle. *tr

My car will randomly stall out when stop or driving. its stalled while stopped at a light, turning after stopped at a stop sign, on the highway during rush hour traffic. all the lights will come on, the rpm will fall to zero, its will kind of chug like if a manual were to stall even though it is an automatic. the spark plugs, ignition switch, distributor and pvc valve have been replaced. *tr

I am the owner of a 99 honda accord coupe and have been having trouble with my car failing to start in certain types of weather and the longer i've had the car the more the problem has progressed and it is now stalling while i'm driving down the road, including yesterday when i had my 4 month old daughter in the car. if someone had been following too closely who knows the damage that could have been done. multiple mechanics have looked at it and cannot find anything wrong. i have been on honda's website and found that there are recalls and mine have been fixed long before i bought the car the only problem is i am still having the problems i've contacted honda and they seem to be very unwilling to help me further and so i am stuck at this point with a vehicle i'm afraid to drive because i'd be putting myself, my daughter and others on the road in danger. i've recently found the website car complaints.com and under electrical complaints i was baffled at how many people are having the same problems even after their recall had been taken care of also, and that was only one website. i do not have the money to take jabs in the dark replacing parts that don't need replaced especially after i've had to pay to have it towed twice now (not cheap). i should not have to wonder whether or not a car that is in great condition and under 100,000 miles is going to start or not. i hope this complaint will move someone to do something because i have not been able to receive help from anyone else. i feel that this case should be reopened and something should be done to make honda responsible before someone is seriously injured. *tr

Ignition switch failure vehicle shuts off while driving, a recall of the ignition switch was completed in 2002 for similar problem. nhtsa #02v120000 the vehicle is now exhibiting the same problems addressed in the original recall, i contacted honda usa on 08/11/2009 to see if they would repair an obvious defect in the ignition switch. i was told they would only repair a recalled item once. since the replacement switch is also defective and creates a dangerous driving condition, i would hope nhtsa would look into this issue before someone is injured or killed due to honda's lack of concern for their parts and repairs. *tr

My car began quitting while driving may 2009, however, it would immediately start again. 06/2009-7/2009 when trying to turn the ignition, the dashboard would flicker. after a few tries, the car would start but then quit. on 8/4/2009, while driving the car quit again but then smoke came from behind the steering wheel ( steering column area). simultaneously, the car quit. the car would not start at all by turning the ignition forward. however when turning it backwards it would try to crank. the car was towed to and now currently sits at bluegrass honda in paducah, ky. according to honda, it is the ignition switch, which i found was under recall but the dealership claims that the ignition was replaced in 2002. i don't believe this is true because here i have the very problem that the recall acknowledged. i don't believe i should responsible for payment on a recall, however, the dealership is charging me $200.00. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 1999 honda accord. while driving 5 mph the engine stalled without warning. after several attempts the vehicle restarted. the failure occurred intermittently. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer for inspection and the ignition switch was replaced. the vehicle identification number was excluded from recall campaign id number 02v1200000 (electrical system:ignition:switch. the failure mileage was 160,00. the current mileage was 163,000.

1. car shuts off suddenly without warning while driving. it has happened while idling and when moving 70 mph on the highway. 2. there was a safety recall in 2002 to replace the ignition switch for this same problem. there were no problems at the time but the work to replace the ignition switch was done in 2002. car began problems early in 2009 with 125,000 miles at random intervals. no accident has occurred but still a very scary incident. 3. since the recall work had already been done, the dealer replaced the main relay after diagnosis showed nothing for a total of $212. another failure occurred the very same day so i returned to dealer and got the ignition switch replaced at a cost of $146. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 1999 honda accord. the contact stated that the vehicle stalled without any warning. the vehicle was taken to a local mechanic who diagnosed that the ignition switch was defective and needed to be replaced. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure who did not offer any assistance since the vehicle was not included in any recalls. the vehicle was repaired. the failure mileage was 100,000 and the current mileage was 150,000. updated 08/28/12*lj updated 08/29/12*jb

1999 honda accord ex car stalls randomly. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 1999 honda accord. the contact stated that there were issues with the ignition switch and the vehicle continued to stall. the power steering also failed whenever the vehicle would stall. the rpms and all the instrument panel gauges would become inoperable until the vehicle would gain power on its own. the manufacturer stated that the vehicle was repaired by the previous owner; therefore, they could not assist. the failure and current mileages were less than 130,000.

Tl*the contact owns a 1999 honda accord. the ignition switch failed to operate normally. nhtsa campaign id: 05v025000 is related to the failure. the ignition switch was replaced at the owners expense since honda refused to make the repair per the recall. the failure mileage was 175000.

Tl* the contact owns a 1999 honda accord. the contact was driving 70 mph when the vehicle stalled without warning. the contact stated that the vehicle would sometimes not restart for at least fifteen minutes after the failure and the instrument panel would not illuminate when trying to restart the vehicle. the vehicle was taken to the dealer and an independent mechanic shop for repairs on various parts of the vehicle, which cost over $2500, but to no avail. the failure persisted but the failure was unable to be duplicated. the vehicle was finally taken to another mechanic shop who diagnosed the failure as the ignition switch. there was a recall under nhtsa campaign id number: 02v120000 (electrical system: ignition: switch). the dealer was contacted who advised that the vin was not included in the recall. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 167,000 and the current mileage was 227,000.

Engine stops while driving highway speed, leading up to the problem i will have problems getting the car started, car will start, then lights in the dash will flash and then the car will cut off, even when in drive. the problem is very consistent and not reliable and dangerous. *tr

For the last 4 to 5 years my 1999 honda accord has stalled for no apparent reason or would not start up right away. i had taken my honda to several places for checkups, i have replaced the battery and a sensor several times before a diagnostic check indicated that i likely had an ignition switch problem, that repair company referred me to my honda dealership where i purchase the vehicle new and the dealer could not duplicate the problem. yesterday my wife had the car on the city of memphis busiest street when it stalled with her in the center lane without any warning by the indicator lights. she called me frantic telling me that almost every car passing her nearly hit her. i called the police to help get traffic control to help her. she as a few others have indicated could not get the car to shift gears to neutral while stalled. finally after sitting 10 minutes she was able to start the car. if this would have happened and my wife was rear ended with my 19 month old daughter in the car, i would have likely gone nuts on honda. instead this morning i took the car into the dealer who kept the car running for a while when they were able to get the car to stall (or so they say). the dealer switched out the ignition switch at a cost of $300 on top of the $75 diagnostic at the dealer one month ago and a $49 diagnostic at a small service station not to mention the sensors that were switched out that did not solve the problem. i have already filed a complaint with honda indicating that this problem is a life safety issue which they should replace free of charge. if this happens again i will likely see a lawyer i just pray that my family is not injured or worse. this morning the dealer indicated that the problem could also be the main relay but since they were able to supposedly able to duplicate the problem they replaced only the ignition switch. please let me know if anyone else is involved in litigation to get this problem resolved and receive reimbursement. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 1999 honda accord. the vehicle stalled intermittently without any prior warnings. she notified the manufacturer in reference to recall# 02v120000 (electrical system:ignition:switch). she was advised that since her vehicle identification number was excluded from the recall, she was ineligible for a free remedy. no repairs were made. the failure mileage was unknown. the current mileage was 100,000.
