The following event happened twice with this vehicle. tin both instances, the car was running and in park with no one in the vehicle. it then down the driveway with no one in it. in the second occurrence, it appears to have gone into reverse on its own and rolled into a retaining wall causing damage to the rear passenger side bumper and back panel. *tr
If you go over a bump while braking - the brakes fail, and you have to take your foot off the brake and re-apply in order to stop. this has occurred numerous times - and is a serious flaw on this automobile. this car is a fleet vehicle for my company and i have asked peers if this occurs on their cars - and they have confirmed the same experience with their brakes. with all the toyota recalls - i am unclear why this has not been addressed...? *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2010 toyota prius. the contact stated that while driving 30 mph, the brake and traction control warning lights illuminated. the vehicle became difficult to stop when the brakes were applied. the vehicle was towed to the dealer for diagnosis and the contact was informed that the brake booster pump assembly would need to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 39,001 and the current mileage was unknown.
This is a recurring problem. anytime i am slowing down for a red light and there is a pothole or other rough surface condition, the car lurches forward and jumps, so to speak. given the condition of the roads in chicago, this is a pretty regular problem. i usually have to press the brake much harder than normal while this is occurring because of crosswalks and lights. i think this is a serious safety issue; however, when asking the dealer to look into this, they indicated that it was the anti-lock braking system kicking in, and that it was a perfectly common thing to experience. *tr
I was in the right lane traveling west bound on tennessee street in tallahassee, fl, and as i was going through the light at the corner of tennessee and monroe street, the traffic stopped just past the intersection. as i was entering the intersection, i applied my brakes but they went straight to the floor and a warning light started blinking. i had one of two choices; hit the car in front of me or hit the curb for the sidewalk close to where a man was standing with his bicycle. luckily i had just enough room to go between the back-end of the car in front of me and the man on the sidewalk. fortunately no one was injured in my accident, i just scared the man very badly, but the repairs to my car are probably going to be more than $4,000. *tr

When parking, my 2010 prius accelerated forward causing it to go over a curb form damaging the front bumper. unexpected acceleration has caused four accidents damaging my car. i have records of these repairs. the hybrid system went out 8/30/2013 and in march,2014 the back brakes fell off: no bolts, pads, caliber, fluid were in place when it was towed to robbins toyota in texarkana, tx. the front right booster was blown out while in this shop. my vehicle there over a month for various reasons. *tt
This has happened atleast 4 times in the last year, where the car has lost complete braking power and at the time this happens, all the lights on the dashboard light up for a few seconds and on subsequent pumping of the brake pedal, the brake power returns to normal. on one occasion i almost ended up in the middle of an intersection, thankfully there was no oncoming traffic and was able to recover without getting crashed into. i see a lot of similar complaints here and on toyota's own community portal describing the exact same behavior. in all cases, the dealership has ended up replacing the brake booster assembly. in my case though, the dealer confirmed that my car was on the recall list for the brake booster assembly, but when they ran some diagnostics tests advised by toyota which did not report any issues and therefore refused to change the brake booster assembly. i also contacted toyota (case# [xxx]) only to be told a wishy washy answer. i was told that toyota cannot do anything about it since it has given guidelines to the dealership and if the dealership says "no" then so does "toyota". not to mention having spent hours on the phone with toyota only to be tossed several times between different supports reps and the dealership. additionally, i was told by the dealership to keep driving the car and see if it was to happen more often. once it gets to a point where i can find a pattern and reproduce the error with the toyota rep that's then they will look into the issue. for some reason they fail to understand that i am not complaining about my wiper blades not working but the brakes, which could put the diver in a life threatening situation. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

On tuesday october 02, 2012 at approximately 0510 the vehicle brakes went out and the brake, abs, and stabilization lights came on along with alarm. vehicle was towed to toyota dealership for repair - told it was the master cylinder. vehicle picked up on morning of october 4, 2012 from dealership drove approximately 20 miles and the exact same thing occurred. brakes, abs, stabilization alarms came on. toyota dealership was called and said that the vehicle should be fine - system had cleared with part replacement - "maybe it was a bad part or there could be air in the lines." vehicle is presently at the dealership awaiting inspection. fortunately, no accidents or injuries occurred on these dates. however because of the loss of brakes and near accidents this vehicle is now a threat to my safety. so far i have been lucky - i do not want to take a chance with the third being the time that i am in a serious accident. *tr
Vehicle activates abs while stopping and brake disengages, causing vehicle to not stop when brakes are applied unless brakes are reapplied, potentially leading to accidents due to braking failure. dealership is not addressing the issue in a timely manner. delaying this recall months might lead to accidents affecting all passengers, including children. continued delay of this matter could lead to legal action due to an inability on behalf of the toyota company and dealerships to promptly fix a severe and dangerous problem. *tr
Traveling on parkway when we were approaching a vehicle going south down at approximately 55 we were traveling 72 with cruise control engaged, i tapped the brakes to try and slow and nothing happened i then held the brake pedal down for more than 15 seconds with no success, tried to disengage the cruise by pulling back on the handle on the steering wheel and still it would not disengage, we struck the truck at 72 mph only because we had no where else to go and the vehicle would not disengage cruise. the cruise control light was still illuminated after the vehicle came to rest after impact and the vehicle brakes still did not appear to function, this vehicle was a toyota lease and was told multiple times by toyota that the issues was recalled by toyota and that this vehicle had the recall performed. *tr

Turned on car and noticed alot of the dashboard lights stayed on. as i pressed the brake pedal it felt weird and once i put the car on the drive gear i totally lost brake control, the car kept moving and i was not able to stop. i had to shift to "park" and risk the transmission but better than risking my life... i called a towing truck. the car is at the toyota dealer and i don't think they have a clue of what's wrong with it.... we'll keep you posted. *tr

The unintended acceleration accident happened on 7/18/2012, ~6:20 pm at company's parking lot. i backed my 2010 prius slowly. then i saw a car coming on my way. but before i took any action, this prius suddenly started accelerating, it went wildly, and turned more than 360 degree backward in the parking lot in just a few seconds. since the car parked between a building and a slop, from the front mirror, first, i saw the building wall and glasses, then i saw the slope, then i saw a car parked close to my car: no! don't hit that car! that is the last thing i remember. because of the fast turning of the car and because i was so terribly scared, i lost conscious after that until the prius hit the truck and bounced back and stopped by itself. after a few seconds, i woke up and realized: i am still alive. i got off the car and saw prius passed the two curbs and hit the truck. the two tires on the driver side got flat because they passed the curb very fast. i was so scared that i couldn't recall of anything for a few days until weekend. why did the car lose control? one may argue that i stepped on the accelerator. this could happen to new drivers, but not to me because i have been driving for so many years and always a good driver. many times i saw a car on my way when i was backing, i always stopped right away. and i was healthy in a normal day in normal mode, alert as usual. why would i step on accelerator when backing? even if i mis-stepped on the accelerator, i can always switch to brake right away. but i could?t do anything about the car on the day. it was out of control completely. after i lost conscious, my hands were off the steering wheel and my foot didn't step on anything, the car didn't slow down but still moved fast and passed two curbs easily. such a manipulation can only be done when the car is in acceleration, and by itself. please investigate it asap! *tr
2010 prius brake failure. i was able to slow down the car by repeated pumping on the brakes. fortunately, managed to crawl to a nearby toyota dealer by using the pumping technique and have my foot on the emergency foot brake just in case. toyota said i need to replace the master cylinder with actuator. total cost parts/labor $4100. i am upset because my family or others could have been seriously hurt if i panicked and not pumped on the brake to slow the vehicle down. this is a serious hazard which should be known as i have seen other similar complains lodge online. *tr
I have had this problem ever since i bought this car used from a toyota dealership. if i drive over an uneven surface, pothole, etc., my car will skip and then lurch forward. it is worst on wet roads. i have trouble stopping it. on snow i have little to no traction. i got a new set of tires and i wasted my money. no difference. i don't feel safe driving this vehicle. i have been driving for years, had many different vehicles, drive as part of my job, and have never experienced anything like it. contacting toyota about it was a waste of time. i have spoken to other prius 2010 owners and every one says the same thing about how it handles when going over bumps. the skip and lurch could easily result in a rear end collision. i think this is something toyota just doesn't want to admit to as being a problem.
I applied my brakes approaching a traffic light and hit a small pot hole and the entire vehicle jerked forward even though the brakes were applied and never taken off the pedal. i had to then press down harder on the brake pedal to come to a complete stop. i have observed this type of behavior when the road changes surfaces and is lower than the previous surface and dips in the road. this is all observed while only braking at low speeds less than 40 mph. every time this behavior is observed there is a loud bang, i am not completely sure if this is from switching surfaces or hit pot holes or dips in the road. *tr
When braking at a slow speed the car will suddenly stop braking, with brakes still being applied, whenever a rough surface is encountered, for example bumps or potholes. this loss of braking happens everytime a rough surface is encountered during braking and is easy to replicate. *tr
Have owned the car since new in 2010. brakes exhibit the same issue mentioned in other complaints i.e. when going over bumpy roads, brakes "release" and re-engage causing the car to not stop quickly. had software recall done but did not significantly affect. have just been living with it but after seeing all other complaints, thought i would weigh in with the same problem as it appears to be a common issue with a design flaw of some sort that needs to be addressed for safety reasons.
While applying the brakes to stop at an intersection one of the front tires was over a manhole cover and the car skidded over it like i was braking on a patch of ice. as soon as i was past the cover the brakes engaged and stopped the car. i noticed this occurring every time i would brake on an uneven surface where there was space between one of the front tires and pavement. i had bought the same make, model and year vehicle for my son 11 months later and noticed the same problem while test driving it. when i questioned the salesman about it i was told that it was the way the abs works and that it was normal. on 11/20/2014 while checking the airbag recall list i noticed a recall for the same problem that i was having, recall announced 2/9/2010, nhtsa ref # 10v03900 so i called toyota customer service 1-800-331-4331 and was told that neither cars' vin# showed in the recall so it could not be happening and i would not be covered under the recall. they referred me to a toyota dealer who told me that the fix which was (reprogramming of abs control unit module) would not covered in the extended warranties of either cars. i should not be financially responsible for the diagnostics and repairs of a known safety problem which had a recall. i understand that it is not the dealers' fault and they shouldn't be held financially responsible either. *tr

Ok, this type of incident (loss of braking at low speeds) has happened repeatedly in this vehicle, despite a recall in 2010 and "software fix". the date listed is approximate. i felt compelled to provide this information after having this happen twice in the past week, in the hopes that some permanent fix can be made available, and to warn prospective buyers to be cautious. in all incidents, when traveling over bumps in a road with the brakes engaged, there is a sudden slight "acceleration", but in actuality, probably just the momentary loss of braking. this happens when going over: (1) manhole covers (2) potholes (3) slight dips in the road (from subsiding road patching areas). does not appear to be worse in wet conditions, and has only happened to me at low speeds (~5 -- ~ 20 mph). note that original carpeted mats were replaced with ones that fit a bit better, and do not cause any issues with the acceleration pedal. once the bump is passed over, normal braking occurs. when i feel this vehicle momentarily lose braking, i quickly let off the brake for a split second, and resume braking. i have gotten used to this defect, but i sure would like someone to investigate and provide a quality recall fix. this braking issue has happened in north carolina (where the vehicle was purchased) and in massachusetts. thank you. *tr
This is a chronic problem with the car: when it hits rough terrain, the brakes do not react properly. there is a hesitation between the time the brake pedal is hit and the time the car slows. (there was an earlier repair/recall for this issue, and the initial problem -- also brake-related -- was helped; but this hesitation problem -- only on gravel or rough terrain -- resulted.) it will cause an accident eventually. *tr
Car seems to lurch forward before stopping when braking on a rough surface. this is an ongoing problem. despite nhtsa notice that there is a software fix available for some 2010 priuses, toyota maintains my car is not included in the batch that was to receive them. update 9/15/15*cw updated 12/06/2017*cn
I had been hearing a lot of grinding noises that just got worse. when i went to the dealer, they discovered that my brake pads had failed/frozen. they replaced my pads and machined my rotors. they could not explain why a car i had for only a little over a year had this problem. they at first blamed my driving, and then the roads (i.e. too many gravel roads). now, at 68,300 miles those pads have now failed again. one is completely worn down and the rotor is now rusted through. no one can explain why this is happening. when i demanded an answer, they told me that a "bulletin" had gone out to the dealers only stating that due to the pads failing, they were "redesigning" them. but, they would only replace for free those that fell under the 36,000 mile warranty. i don't understand why, in less than 69,000 miles i have had to have this repair done not once, but twice. they tell me no other owner has had this problem, but i find that hard to believe. can anyone tell me if there are other complaints of this type, and what can be done to rectify this problem. *tr

This vehicle should be part of the larger toyota recall on brakes that was announced earlier this year. after a few thousand miles, i noticed that the brakes gave way if the prius hits a bump or pothole. toyota's statement that "customers are perceiving inconsistent brake feel during slow and steady application of the brakes on rough or slick road surfaces" is an understatement. the brakes don't actually work when you are decelerating and hit a bump, which is problematic when you live in a city notorious for potholes. i reported this issue early on to my dealer, and have since followed up, each time being met with the same response: there are no reports on this issue. for whatever reason, toyota feels that only certain vin lot numbers merit the recall, but i can assure them the problem is more widespread. most owners i've talked to have tried to accommodate the problem by being aware of bumps when coming to a stop, but at some point someone will injure or kill someone else as a result of this braking issue. *tr
On multiple occasions, i have experienced issues with the car suddenly accelerating while i'm pressing the brakes. specifically, this appears to occur when braking on uneven surfaces (ie construction areas, pot holes, etc.). this can obviously become a deadly situation if one is trying to stop the vehicle and with this problem run into the car/vehicle ahead. most recently this occurred on the surface streets in low speed, in traffic. it feels like the car lurches ahead while applying the brake. i was told by the service people at toyota that i was making this up. i can recreate it given the right surface. *tr
When applying light to moderate braking in preparation to make a right turn, i went over some bumpy pavement and the car seemed to lurch forward. it was probably a loss of braking rather than actual acceleration, but it was very disconcerting and i'm lucky it didn't cause an accident. i now have over 49,000 miles on the car and this has happened on quite a few occasions. i know there was a recall on some 2010 prius vehicles for this problem but my car was not recalled. my dealer says there is no "software fix" for this problem. i find it unacceptable that toyota doesn't have a solution for this as it is a real safety issue. it's just pure luck that i haven't been involved in an accident with possible injuries or worse. i intend to pursue this again when i bring the car in for the 50,000 mile service and inverter recall, but i'm not very hopeful. maybe if more owners lodge a complaint on this site, toyota will be forced to correct this issue. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2010 toyota prius. while driving 40 mph over a bump in the road, the vehicle lost braking capability for a few seconds. the failure occurred each time the vehicle was driven over a bump or pothole. the dealer adjusted the brakes, but the failure recurred. the manufacturer was notified. the approximate failure mileage was 48,000. updated 09/02/14*lj
This incident has occurred numerous times since purchasing the car, but it wasn't until last week (9/6/2013) that i became terrified as i almost hit another vehicle in front of me. whenever my prius runs over a pothole, bump, uneven surface, or deep manhole cover as i am braking towards an intersection to come to a stop (for me, all these incidents occurred when i approached an intersection) the brakes stop working for a brief moment and suddenly my car jerks forward, lurches forward, or accelerates. i have to press down my brakes really hard to the floor to stop the vehicle when this happens. when this fails, i immediately release the brake and re-apply very hard to the floor to stop the car. in these moments it becomes scary as i am never sure if the car will come to a stop before the intersection. last week, i was approaching a busy intersection while braking and i ran over a uneven pothole cover/filler at about 5 to 15 mph which caused my car to accelerate to like 20 or 25 mph! i had to brake very hard in order to stop my car and swerve to the right to avoid hitting the car in front of me. this problem only occurs when my right side tires hit the uneven surface, manhole cover, potholes, bumps, etc. i have not had an incident where it happened with the left tires. toyota service has said there is no problem with my car's brakes and therefore said they can't fix anything. there is a problem with toyota's prius braking system. *tr
Brakes on vehicle occasionally momentarily disengages when i hit a bump, particularly on a slipper surface, while braking at low or moderate braking. this has happened multiple times. it is very obvious when this happens. recently it happened with my wife in the car, i was braking moderately, the brakes fully disengaged for about a second, when they did i increased pressure on the brake pedal and the car severely lurched when the brakes re-engaged. the 2010 prius had a recall for this, but mine is late in the model year and was not subject to that recall. toyota usa and the dealer, of course, says there is not a problem and that they cannot do anything about it. *tr
Since purchase of vehicle when stopping vehicle, as approaching a stop sign or stopped traffic, if i hit a small bump in road, the car jumps forward. i have not hit another car yet but feel this jump when stepping on brakes whether in dry or wet weather could one day hit car in front of me. this is intermittant. did mention to dealer when car was for it's timely services. dealer says there is no recalls. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 toyota prius. the contact stated that while driving at 20 mph, the contact drove over a pothole and the vehicle veered to the right. in addition, the vehicle accelerated in excess. the failure recurred on numerous occasions. the vehicle was taken to a dealer, who was unable to diagnose or repair the vehicle. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the contact was aware of nhtsa campaign number: 10v039000 (service brakes, air). the failure mileage was 15,000.
I purchased this car in 2010 after the 2010 brake malfunction recall. i was told the recall software update had been performed to my car. despite that recall, my car continues to have the following problem on a consistent basis. whenever braking at slow speeds, if i go over a bump or pothole while braking, the brakes disengage, the car lurches forward, and i have to slam on the brakes to get the car to slow down/stop. my understanding is that this problem was supposed to have been fixed by the prior recall. *tr
While braking at low speeds -- such as while approaching a traffic light or an intersection -- passing over a pothole or uneven road surface often causes the brakes to disengage. the sensation is one in which my foot is in the same place as it was when i began braking, but suddenly there is no give to the pedal, the braking has stopped -- braking does not return until i push further down on the pedal. my foot is not dislodged by the bump, and the braking mechanism will not re-engage unless i push the pedal to a new, deeper location. it is obviously disconcerting at intersections, and since moving to a new location and having to re-learn where on my routes this problem will occur, i decided it was time to file a complaint. the frustration is that this issue was supposedly solved a couple years ago with a software fix from toyota, but that fix seems to not have worked. i filed a complaint about the prius problem with some agency (possibly nhtsa or ftc) a few years ago when the other, more notable, brake-sticking problem in other toyotas was in the news. this particular issue is quite different. note: the date of first incidence is approximate, but the problem persists. *tr
For the entire time that i've owned the 2010 prius, the car lurches ahead virtually every time i run over a pothole with the brakes applied (i.e., approaching a stop sign). when i mentioned this at one of my first appointments, i was assured there was nothing wrong. now the problem continues and i've been reading that many other people have the same issue. *tr
I am the original owner of a 2010 prius. within the first month, i contacted toyota, complaining of the brakes, which were not consistently smooth. in general, the brakes work fine, but if i hit a bump or ditch, the brakes suddenly stop working for a split second, and the car feels like it is lurching forward, before the brakes suddenly start working again. toyota service was never able to "reproduce" the problem, and eventually i gave up. a couple years ago, the car was recalled for this problem, and i brought the car in to be fixed. unfortunately, the recall work has not remedied the problem. the brakes still seem to occasionally malfunction when the car drives over a rough patch. toyota seems to believe the problem has been solved, but it has not be solved. there is no difference since the recall.
I have previously (2010 or 2011) filed a detailed report of the consistent anomaly that occurs while braking on a rough surface or upon hitting a pothole, manhole cover, etc. in this situation, the feedback from the vehicle suggests that the brakes have disengaged. based upon 2+ years of additional experience, i would note that: (1) this anomaly occurs consistently, and it has not disappeared or attenuated, (2) i believe that stopping distances are longer than would be expected without this anomaly, (3) my prius was manufactured after the 2010 software fix, and (4) other drivers of 2010 and later prius cars have reported the same phenomenon when i asked about it (see below). most importantly, i would note the following source of evidence which you might easily pursue further. i have been living in new york city (nyc) for most of the last two years. the nyc taxi fleet includes a sizable number of toyota prius cars. every time i take a prius taxi, i ask the driver if he has encountered a similar problem when braking on rough surfaces. in more than a dozen such instances, drivers have consistently reported this same problem. while you may not want to trust my evidence on this matter, it would be very cheap for nhtsa to send an investigator to some of the large taxi garages in nyc to interview drivers with experience driving prius taxi cabs. given the large number of miles logged by taxi drivers, this could be an important source of information from highly experienced drivers --- who must regularly contend with nyc's myriad potholes. i would finally note that --- other than this anomaly --- i love my prius. it is a great car. i would just like for toyota to figure our what is causing this anomaly and fix it. *tr
Vehicle surges when brakes are applied while traveling over railroad tracks or rough pavement. surge lasts for 1 to 2 seconds until braking resumes. vehicle behavior can be easily replicated. *tr
Since we have had the 2010 prius, when we drive it over a bump or rough road, usually at a low speed, and apply the brake simultaneously, the car seems to accelerate briefly. i told my toyota dealer about it the first time we brought it in for service, but they said they'd never heard of something like this. i try to avoid braking when i go over bumps, but i worry that one day i will his something of someone on the other side. the weird acceleration can be felt by the passenger too. *tr
The vehicle has a nasty habit of losing brake pressure over bumps. this can be duplicated easily and is a known issue that toyota has yet to rectify. simply drive over a bump such as a break in concrete on a bridge, pothole, etc. and hold on tight. this can result in a crash and serious injury as occupants experience a sudden loss of braking force which can induce panic and collision. *tr
