Problems with 2010 Toyota Prius SERVICE BRAKES, ELECTRIC

On average, the 2010 Toyota Prius starts to “feel” problems with the SERVICE BRAKES, ELECTRIC and its various aspects after 4 167 miles.

Recently reported SERVICE BRAKES, ELECTRIC problems on 2010 Toyota Prius

Ever since i purchased my 2010 prius in november, 2009 the brakes have been a problem. when braking while driving over a bump or pothole the car looses braking ability and there is a surge of power. the dealership claims there is no problem and the recall work has not made a noticeable difference. *tt

Backed 2010 prius up and started to make u-turn in driveway. when pulled forward turning applied brakes and well there were none. traveled about 15 feet and hit a brick wall. after some delay the engine now had some control as the brakes also did. waiting for towing instructions to get the car to garage. maximum speed was maybe 5mph. *tr

2010 prius. brake fade during hard braking on rough surface. the brakes suddenly fade then grab hard. *tr

Having problems with the braking on my 2010 toyota prius. at slow to moderate speeds while i am braking and go over a pothole the car seems to stop braking and keeps going. i then have to depress the brake harder to make the car stop. i haven't had any collisions because of this issue because i have not been following closely behind a car. but i believe if i was, i would have definitely rear-ended another vehicle. *tr

My 2010 prius' brakes did not respond while on the road on 1/22/11. then 2x again on 1/23/11. as a consumer, i do not know who regulates car companies but i have called the manufacturer and they need to 'duplicate' the problem. in the past, my brakes would accelerate before it would catch and the problem was not 'duplicated' by the dealer. this time the brakes failed me 3x within 24 hours and i am extremely concerned. i would like to know which government agency to report it to and what better options i have to get a resolution. *tr

Accident 12/22/10 turned left as i pulled into parking space nearest to handicapped spot. it was very sunny and there was a patch of what looked like ice. as the car went over that spot it started to accelerate. i applied the brake, only to find myself hitting the curb. after hitting the curb the car lurched over the curb and i continued applying the brake. in a fraction of a second my car was on the side walk, just before impact with the wall i took my foot off the brake because the car did not seem to be responding. i didn't know what else to do. it was over in seconds. bricks dented in the building, smashed glass. i put the car in reverse and into the parking spot. head spinning as to how this happened. i walked into the store and apologized. there was glass dust still hanging in the air. the woman inside said 'call the police'. i thought that was a good idea. i was eager to demonstrated that i wasn't drunk nor using illegal drugs. i offered to take a breathilizer, but they thought that wasn't necessary. *tr

Even after the brake recall repair has been performed, my car's brakes suddenly and momentarily lose braking power over uneven or rough surfaces. problem seems compounded when turning. *tr

i purchased a 2010 prius. within a 100 miles, the brake pedal randomly locked up, the brakes grabbed and brought my car to an abrupt halt. the brake pedal remained locked for about 3-5 seconds. the car would not move forward or backward until after the brake pedal unlocked itself. initially this happened in reverse mode several times, then it was happening once a week and in forward mode as well as reverse. i took it in for repairs, most recently toyota had my car for a month. note that during this month long investigation nothing was done to my car, it just sat there. upon my leaving the dealership the brake pedal actually lock up! the field representative confirmed the pedal to be locked and would not release for 30 seconds or longer. he took measurements and the engineer took photos of the brake pedal as it was up in the air and not depressed as a normal pedal would be. he instructed the service manager to send me home in a loaner car and not the prius because of the brake pedal. i was so relieved that someone finally saw the brake pedal locked up and not release. after an additional week, the dealer contacted me and said that toyota determined that this condition is normal and that the vehicle is operating as designed! when i requested that the photos and measurements of the locked up brake pedal be included in my service report, the field representative refused to furnish that data. instead, he denied he witnessed the brake pedal lock up. there were no codes, no warning lights or warning sounds, a serious safety defect in addition to the brakes locking up. the dealer informed me that toyota is aware that 1% of the prius cars have this problem and are working on a fix! i believe that the design and/or manufacturing defect have resulted in an inherently dangerous product and toyota is trying to cover it up. please check into this, i believe many people are at risk. 1% of a million cars is a lot of drivers, passengers and others sharing the road. *tr

2010 toyota prius occasional loss of brake performance immediately upon start-up of vehicle. on 4 separate occasions, there was noted loss of braking capability after shifting into reverse immediately after turning on the ignition. this caused the brake pedal to feel hard, and allowed the car to slowly move against the operator's intentions. after about 5 seconds, the brakes begin to function normally. a toyota dealership told me it takes a few seconds for brake pressure to come up after starting the vehicle and that i should wait before shifting into gear. this instruction seems counteractive towards safety, and the vehicle should not be allowed to shift into gear until brake pressure is present. a simple software update should be able to address this concern. *tr

2010 prius when attempting to stop if vehicle hits bumps, potholes, manholes, etc., the vehicle braking systems lets go for a moment and the vehicle will keep moving forward. i have had my prius into my service department for the "recall" but the problem continues. my service department has been in contact with toyota who tells them it is a characteristic of the vehicle and to advise owner of such. this is a clear safety issue with the vehicle. my family will not drive the car and my friends won't get in the car because of this problem. i was told to either live with the vehicle or trade it in. not an acceptable answer in my book. this can happen with the vehicle 5 or more times a day depending on where i am driving. *tr

Toyota prius accelerates suddenly when driven over bumps, such as speed bumps or other bumps in the road, usually when going under 30mph, and often with the brakes being lightly pressed. *tr

When attempting to stop our 2010 toyota prius, the car lurched forward, and continued to move. i let off the brake pedal, and reapplied the brakes, but they did nothing for about 30 seconds - at which point the car stopped. after contacting both our toyota dealership, and the toyota customer service department, they will not look at the car until next week. *tr

Toyota prius braking problem; i had the "recall" fix applied; i have noticed in the last two weeks that the car has started to have brake failure again when going over bumpy surfaces. it had been fine for a while, but this started happening again. i have contacted dealership regarding the same. *tr

Like all other 2010 prius complaints, when i apply the brakes and go over a bumpy surface, the brakes release causing the car to jolt forward. i took my 2010 toyota prius in to the dealer due to the recall. the service manager stated my car would be fixed in less than thirty minutes. whatever they were supposed to do to fix the brake problem did not happen or did not work. my car still jolts forward when i am pressing on the brakes and i hit a bumpy surface. i am scared for my own safety. in addition, i cannot help but wonder what this problem does to my tires. i have had the car since july 2009 and have gotten two flat tires in the past 11 months! i have put so much time and money in to this car, and i haven't even had it for a full year. *tr

We purchased a 2010 prius in may 2010. my wife drove the car out of a shopping mall driveway into the left hand turn of the road and pulled up behind a truck. she was traveling about 5-10 mph on a normal road, no pot holes or wet conditions. she had her foot rammed to the floor but no brakes! she went into the back of the truck, causing extensive damage to the front of the car and windscreen. she had two children in the back with her. seems like they have not fixed the problem! we were told by dealership that there were no problems and that every car on the lot had been fixed! not repaired yet. not sure i want it back. *tr

Squealing noise from brakes/wheels when i press brakes on my brand new 2010 toyota prius. it's literally causing me headaches after drives and is a big health hazard. i have taken the car twice to my dealership that sold the car and they are recognizing the noise but telling that it is normal for all prius. if that's the case then it's a defect in prius as squealing noise that causes headaches should not be normal. also, i am not the only one facing this. please check hundreds of similar complaints on priuschatforums through link: http://priuschat.com/forums/gen-iii-2010-prius-main-forum/68563-squeaking-sound-wheels-during-rolling-start-brake-noise-merged.html. *tr

I had the toyota prius reflash done on my car. since this reflash i have had multiple instances of the brake surge. the most recent incident was yesterday. i was driving down a road going about 25 mph. i noticed an upcoming stop sign and a small dip in the road. i engaged the brakes and slowed to about 10 mph. upon hitting the dip the car surged forward toward the stop sign and intersection. despite applying even and steady pressure to the brake, the car suddenly surged forward on its own accord. we have had multiple instances since the 'fix' by toyota. we tried arbitration to resolve the issue, but we have been ignored. i am concerned that a future surge will inevitably lead to an accident. this is a definite safety concern that must be addressed! *tr

I continue to have a loss of braking when traveling over bumpy surfaces, even after receiving the software upgrade that was released by toyota. this is especially troubling when i am traveling over an extended area of bumpy road, and the brakes won't work as expected. *tr

I have a 2010 toyota prius and i received the software recall for the braking system. after receiving the software recall my wife and i have both noticed that there are instances when the brakes do not respond as quickly as they should which is similar to the original reason the prius was recalled. *tr

I have a toyota prius and it has been recalled about the brakes. i sent it in to have the brakes fixed, but i am still having problems. when ever i start to stop the car and there are bumps in the road the car seems to accelerate or the brakes release. it only happens if there is bumps in the road. the car will not stop when it hits the bumps. what should i do? *tr

Braking issue - 2010 toyota prius. we purchased a 2010 prius last week, asked the dealership if any/all recall work had been completed and were told 'yes.' yet, i believe that the dealership misrepresented the facts - both my husband and i have experienced temporary loss of braking in our new 2010 prius while going over rough patches in the road and over speed bumps/traffic calming bumps. we both doubt that the abs recall work was actually done before we took possession of the car last week, so we're taking it back to the dealership today. i am not afraid to buy a toyota and understand that other car manufacturers have experienced quality issues resulting in recalls, but i am very upset that we asked about the recall work and still ended up with a car with braking issues. i don't want to drive a potentially unsafe vehicle. *tr

2010 toyota prius "surge" while braking over bumpy road surface...i brought my car in for the recall mod and the problem seems worse than ever!! what gives?? *tr

In my 2010 prius i have had two incidence with my brake when starting out in reverse. first time was in my driveway, don't remember how long i was in the car until my girlfriend got in.. but when i put it into reverse i got a"stiff" feeling in the pedal and it felt like it wouldn't go down all the way... the car seemed to accelerate back faster than expected when i lifted my foot off the brake.... i lifted my foot and put the brake down and i stopped very quickly (as if i was slamming on the brakes) i then took my foot off and reapplied a few times and the pedal felt fine. we then drove to the local market.. i sat in the car with the acc mode on for about 5-8 minutes while she went in... when she came out i started the car, went to back up and the same thing happened.... this was very disconcerting in a crowded lot with lots of people walking in close proximity to the cars.... i believe i just hit the park button... then reapplied the brake (which now felt normal) and i haven't had the issue since.... this issue has been discussed in prius forums at length and there is a very consistent theme to the incidents that toyota should explore and deal with. *tr

I own a 2010 prius. i received a recall notice and took it in to the dealer for repair. nevertheless, even after the alleged repair, problems still happen while braking. specifically, if i hit a bump or a pothole while braking, the car surges forward. i would say this happens to me multiple times per week. *tr

2010 prius engine accelerates when braking over bumps/gravel. brought car back to toyota dealer for recall modification and problem still exists, in fact, seems worse. *tr

I own a 2010 toyota prius. i was having braking issues before the safety recall. it would accelerate when i hit a bump while braking. i told brought my vehicle in for the first day of the recall and it was "fixed." now the problem is back. my car suddenly accelerates when i'm slowing down/braking and hit a bump. *tr

I have a new 2010 prius with less than 1k miles. on 4-9-10 while pulling into a parking spot i experienced a simultaneous loss of braking combined with unintended surge of acceleration. my prius jumped the curb that was perpendicular to the parking slot and stopped as it slammed into a brick building about 8 feet beyond the curb. i utilized my safety connect button to record the time of the accident and had the vehicle towed to the dealer. i contacted toyota customer experience center and now have a case #. i was told that someone would contact me within 2 business days. i am not at all comforted by this very scary incident. i would just like to have my 2005 prius back as i never had any problems with it. i am seeing that my problem is not unique based on many similar problems on this nhtsa complaint site. *tr

Although i took my vehicle in for the recall (2010 prius) last week, the vehicle repeated the loss of brake/surge issue this morning. i also reported to my toyota dealer last week about abnormal, sudden braking. when applying normal pressure to the brakes, on several occasions the brakes have locked violently, sending me and my passengers against our seat belts. toyota claimed that the recall may make that better. it has not. thirdly, i reported last week to toyota that the car has on occasion shaken violently and made a loud clanking noise (like a washing machine off balance) upon start up, causing me to jump out f the car for fear of it blowing up. they said they had never heard of this. my co-worker, a fellow 2010 prius owner, reported the same issue. *tr

I have a 2010 toyota prius that was recalled and repaired in march 2010. on april 4, 2010 i was driving the car with my wife and was under normal braking conditions when i pressed the brakes and they acted like they were anti-lock. the pedal skipped and went to the floor. it was so noticeable that my wife asked what just occurred and i told her the brakes failed for a second. i was at about 20-30 miles per hour when this occurred coming up to a stop light. again the car was taken in for the recall prior to this. *tr

Despite having had the brake recall item fixed on my 2010 toyota prius, i continue to experience instances when i depress the brake and the car skids from side to side with a sensation that the end of the car is literally lifting off the ground. this has happened to me multiple times and toyota has told me that the recall fixed any concerns, so there shouldn't be anything wrong. on one occasion when this happened my vehicle actually bumped into a fixed object, causing damage to the front bumper. i purchased this car based on toyota's reputation and am now so mistrusting of it that i hesitate to put my family in it. as a consumer i strongly feel that i and all owners of 2010 prius' should have the right to opt to return our vehicles to toyota and have the opportunity to select a different new or used vehicle of the same price for what we paid for our cars. the proven concerns about the 2010 prius should be enough for the nhtsa to put pressure on toyota to allow for some type of restitution. it is not as simple as just trading in the car at any random dealer because the reputation of these cars has severely lowered the market value. toyota's errors should not be permitted to have a financial impact on those consumers who purchased their cars. i would be happy to allow nhtsa to test my vehicle for a short period of time if it would help in the research of this problem. *tr

I purchased my 2010 prius back in july of 2009 and had problems stopping the car when applying the brake over a bump or a pot hole on the road. the car would accelerate for a second before coming to a full stop. when there was voluntary recall, for me it was mandatory because this was a serious issue because if there would have been a car in front of me, or if this was close to an intersection and pedestrians, who knows what could happen. i took it to the dealership to get the recall. they told me it is some software update. after getting the vehicle serviced, i took it for a test drive and noticed slight improvement in the response when applying the brake pedal. but this morning as i was applying my brake heading towards the intersection to make a turn, i hit a pot hole and the accelerated again and i had to quickly maneuver the vehicle to avoid collision with the car in front of me. whatever they did with the recall did not resolve the brake problems.

Abs brakes fail to engage when one of the front tires hits pot hole / slippery bumpy surface. the car surges forward during braking before braking resumes. the recall and fix toyoto impimented on my car on 2/15 did not address the issue, it only shortened to lag time (period of exceleration - surge forward). the issue still exists and is still a dangerous safety hazard. i reported this to the dealer in smithtown, ny who contacted toyota factory and they advised the dealer, who advised me that the car operates as per specifiation. the dealer and the factory did not even look at my car! i demanded a work order which they gave me stating "car to be brought back after toyota is contacted adn advises dealer on the condition". the next day the dealer called me to say totota advised the car is working as per spec. toyota refuses to address this issue and the dealer will not look at the car. this is a safety hazzard that i should not have to be subjected to. please contact me. thank you doreen gebbia, nesconset, ny

2010 toyota pirius issue with brakes. i received a recall notice, brought it to dealer, they supposedly fixed the problem. the recall did not correct the problem. there is still an issue with the brakes. if you have to brake on an uneven surface the car does not respond immediately. it seems to float or glide over bump before the brake catches. it is a constant cause of aniexty while driving. extremely dangerous because you can crash into car in front of you especially when city driving as i do when i commute to and from work each day.

On my drive home from the toyota dealership after having the abs brake fix recall fix applied, i applied my brakes to slow down for a speed bump and while the car rolled over the speed bump the brakes slipped and the car seemed to surge forward. please note this is immediately after the car received the brake recall fix.

The recall repair to the brake system on my toyota 2010 prius did not fix the intermittant brake failure that is the focus of the prius recall. dealer installed "fix" twice but the delay in braking and feeling of additional torque when braking on rough and/or wet pavement still occours.

Recall on toyota prius (2010), did not receive recall notice until after returned to dealer for recall, service performed, still has same issue, returned to dealer ron hibbard toyota 3/23/10, mechanic stated they have done all they can do, milage, date, and speed at time of incidents are approx. same issue occurred 2 times since recall service

I leased a 2010 toyota prius in december. immediately upon leaving the dealership i noticed that the vehicle's brakes do not hold when you hit a bump/pothole. in fact, the car shoots forward and you must be prepared. i filled out the on-line form for toyota customer service to go on record with them i had the recall software upgrade installed 3 weeks ago, and while the problem is much less severe, the upgrade fix does not fully correct this issue. this morning, my vehicle's brakes did not hold when i was braking to drive over a bump in the road at 20mph. i have had a few more minor occurrences, but today was noticeable. *tr

My 2010 toyota prius has had a defect that i noticed after purchase. every time i brake, when i hit a bump, my car accelerates. there was a recall in which we participated on march 15, 2010 however it did not correct the problem. we are extremely dissatisfied and fearful of the possible danger it could bring to our family and children. *tr

I have been having two issues with the 2010 prius since i bought it on 29th dec 2009. 1. unable to stop and sudden acceleration when hitting rough /uneven road condition and trying to stop and control the vehicle. 2. unable to stop some times when drive at city speed limit and going between slow and stop and slow and fast and slow kind of driving, sometime when pressing brake, instead of decelerating it start to accelerate and takes longer to stop. i have already been to toyota dealership 3 times over this issue. first time they fixed brake issue. second time it was recall that they told will fix the problem i am having. 3rd time they said they can reproduce the problem. but i know i feel the issue sometime. and i can not just leave the car with them for days to investigate and i can change my driving pattern or behavior either for this car. *tr

I had my 2010 toyota prius serviced in order to address a loss of brake power when braking while going over a bump. after the servicing the problem has continued. it is a brief event but concerns me as when it happens it feels momentarily as though the car is speeding up. *tr

I bought a 2010 prius in june 2009. shortly after getting the car i noticed that it seemed to "slip" when i was driving slowly over uneven surfaces (railroad tracks, uneven road surfaces, utility covers). when the recall was announced i realized the "slip" i was feeling was the brakes not working momentarily. i went to a dealer and the car was serviced. however, i have continued to experience this issue even after the supposed fix. *tr

I was driving on the freeway with my cruise control on. it was set to 56 mph. all of a sudden, the vehicle started lurching. it was like it was trying to accelerate then slow down, then accelerate, then slow down. i immediately shut off the cruise control. it has also happened again today when i tried to use the cruise control. *tr

Despite the computer update following the recall my 2010 toyota prius continues to have braking problems. since the update the car accelerates slightly when an uneven road surface is encountered while braking. toyota says this is normal operation. *tr

The brake fix on my 2010 toyota prius did not solve the problem with the brakes releasing under certain conditions. i experienced the problem 3 times before the fix and 2 times after. the only way i could reproduce the problem was while braking on a snow covered road. since having my car repaired under toyota's recall program, i had the brakes release once on wet roads (3/14) and once on ice (3/25).

My prior prius was repurchased by toyota 09/09 with severe electrical issues which only escalated. i believe the man in ca because that happened to us on the highway, and our car behaved as if it were 'possessed'. now my 2010 is having intermittent issues, including an anti-skid/ braking light that we'd thought was remedied by resetting an abs actuator friday-it was on since test driving the car-but i was told many excuses, and eventually they were aware but did not know how to correct this. (?) i'm concerned about driving this vehicle as my 2007 trapped us in the car twice-911 called in a panic-plus my small daughter's safety was at risk just by owning that crazy car. please see if you can locate that car and inspect it-you will see this is not some chance situation-and now i am extremely concerned about our new car 'performing as designed' when brake warning light comes on when applied! feel free contacting me on this!! *tr

I was driving down laurel canyon in los angeles, i hit my brakes, they accelerated and i hit the car in front of me. i did have the code in my 2010 prius fixed however there were still some minor acceleration problems and i was so annoyed that i didn't say anything. however now i have ran into the car in front of me. *tr

While driving on a residential street at approximately 25 to 30mph, i put on brakes for a speed bump and my 2010 prius lost brake power for a (very short) period of time. this same event happened on 3 separate occasions from november of 2009 to the past week. in all cases the street was dry and the car was traveling at or below the speed limit. one occurrence was as described above and the other two we on somewhat of a rough spot in the road. *tr

I brought my 2010 prius to service the recalled brake software issue. previous to this, i noticed braking problems when on slippery and/or bumpy roads where the brakes would 'stop braking' for 1-2 seconds, and give a feeling that the car was lunging forward when attempting to decelerate. i brought the car in to have the brake software upgraded. on march 12th i was driving on wet roads, with some potholes, it was fairly bumpy. i slowed the car as usual and near the stoplight the car failed to decelerate for 1-2 seconds, and i thought i was going to crash into the car in front of me. after 1-2 seconds the brakes caught again and i had to slow down much much faster to avoid hitting the vehicle in front. my concern is that the brake software upgrade did not fix the problem, and i continue to be at risk. *tr

I have a 2010 toyota prius that has had the software update recall performed. since having the recall done, the brakes on the car seem to work even worse than before. it still occasionally feels as though the brakes are slipping while going over a bump, and the brakes also do not seem to work as well under normal operation. *tr

Severe brake grab in slow speed reverse or forward. very intermittent. research shows same complaint found in numerous complaints on the nhtsa site. dealer and toyota unaware and were of no help in resolution. *tr
