Tl* the contact owns a 2010 toyota prius. while driving 5 mph, the brake pedal was depressed, but the vehicle hesitated to respond. the contact stated that the abs warning light, traction control warning light, and brake system warning light illuminated. the vehicle was taken to the dealer to be diagnosed. the contact was informed that the brake booster master cylinder needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 13v235000 (service brakes, hydraulic). the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 86,000. updated 09/06/16*lj the consumer stated the master cylinder/brake booster assembly were subsequently replaced. also, on january 5, 2016, the consumer was involved in an accident while driving on a winding highway. as he tried to negotiate a turn, the tires slipped off the pavement and he ran off the road, causing over $10,000 in damages. updated 10/18/16. *jb

As i was driving, i noticed that when i pressed on the brakes, the car would jerk forward before coming to a stop. once stopped (but still turned on), the car made a buzzing noise i had never heard before. no warning lights came on, and the brakes did not squeak. an hour later, my husband drove the car home for me (i rode with a friend), and he reported that warning lights came on and the brakes did not work properly. in order for the brakes to work, he had to press very hard on them and also allow much more distance for the car to stop. he could have easily crashed into the back of another vehicle. he took the car to the toyota dealership and was informed the brake booster assembly would have to be replaced. this is the same complaint as a 2010 prius recall, but my vin number was not included in the recall, so i did not receive a notice in the ail. also, we had to pay $3008 to have the brake booster assembly replaced. the consumer referenced recall # 13v235000. updated 02/11/16. *jb

Whilst stopped at a traffic light, behind a suburu, the brake failed and hit the suburu. (this was not the first time the brake failed, but fortunately there were no other cars involved when the car did not stop. the driver believed that black ice was involved, but after the incident with the suburu, realized that it was brake failure.) believing that the auto could no longer be trusted, it was sold. toyota insisted it was driver error., and claimed that there was no fault in the breaking system. *tr

When braking on rough roads the brakes will release, causing the car to lunge forward. very scary and dangerous. i took my car back to toyota dealer to have this checked out. they had never heard of this problem (even though there is a recall for it). they checked it out and test drove it, braking over rough road. they said it was braking fine. it is still releasing when braking on rough patches for me. i am always mindful to leave plenty of room between me and the car ahead of me in case i hit a rough patch. i plan on taking my car back to toyota with a printout from this site showing it has been recalled for this very problem and that others are also experiencing the same thing.

2010 toyota prius. consumer states two brake system failures *tgw the consumer stated the vehicle began making an unusual sound and after a few days, numerous warning lights appeared on the dashboard announcing a failure of the braking system. the vehicle was towed to the dealer. an inspection revealed the master cylinder, booster and ecu needed to be replaced. the consumer paid $ 3,246.83 for the repairs. however, nine days later, the unusual brake pedal sound returned, but the brakes worked and no warning lights appeared. the next day, the brake system completely failed while his daughter was driving the vehicle. again, the vehicle was towed to the dealer, where the technicians determined the vehicle needed a new brake booster assembly. the consumer was informed he would only be responsible for the labor costs of $ 255.48. the consumer believed the booster and brake booster were the same part, which was supposed to have been replaced several days prior. jb

Tl* the contact was driving a 2010 toyota prius. the contact was driving 40 mph when the vehicle stopped in the street. prior to the vehicle stopping, a beeping/alarm sounded, the seat belt locked in place and the warning on the dashboard flashed brakes.

I was entering a parking space. turned right into space. the vehicle accelerated, steering wheel locked, and brakes did not respond!.the car sped over the curbing and hit the left front fender of the truck in the next space. *tr

I was entering a parking space, i approached the space about 5 mph. the vehicle suddenly accelerated, the steering locked and the brakes went to the floor. the vehicle jumped the curbing and hit the truck in the next righthand space. it connected with the trucks left front fender. that stopped the vehicle. *tr

Brakes does not work properly on rough surface or bumpy road i have reported couple of times to the dealer but dealer try to mislead and confused me by saying that it is abs system which becomes active on bumpy road and it is a normal brake operation and we have no recall for this vehicle. please let me know what to do? thanks. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 toyota prius. the contact was driving 20 mph when the brakes were depressed but the vehicle failed to stop. the contact then crashed into a sign. there were no injuries. the vehicle was towed to the dealer but not repaired. the manufacturer was not contacted. the failure and current mileages were 13,115.

When i started to drive home, the car was lurching while braking. it was an uncontrolled acceleration. once i got on the freeway, my brake light, abs light and slippage lights all came on at once (along with beeping noise that does not go away). i pulled over to the side of road and noticed that my brakes had degraded by about 75 percent.....while i did have some brakes it would have not been enough for an emergency stop or normal traffic braking. *kb

While the car was parked in a hill with the parking brake it suddenly went backwards and hit the wall of the residency across the street like 500 feet down. car was almost completely damage back, train suspension and all doors out of frame. repair will take 8 weeks at a cost of 14850.00. there were no passengers in the car. *tr

I was driving on i-680 north today and suddenly the "brake", "abs" and "slip indicator" turned on and started beeping. at that time i did not realize what happened, but when i tried to brake the pedal was really hard to press and i was not able to slow down. i finally was able to slow down by going on a ramp and then really pressing down on the brake where the car jerked and slowed down. again the brakes were not working. i was finally able to get the car to stop. when i turn the car on again, the same lights switch on and the car is beeping. *tr

While driving on interstate, the brake and vehicle stability assist lights suddently went on and a beeping alarm sounded. the brakes were not very effective, and it was very difficult to slow down and stop the car when we pulled over. we had the car towed to the dealership, where they informed us that the abs pump and the entire braking system needed to be replaced...on our one year old car! parts alone totaled over $4000 dollars, without labor. toyota was unwilling to replace, as the car was out of warranty for mileage. clearly a defective system in our car, but they were not willing to stand behind their product to cover. angry customer, especially given the fact that toyota states that they want to restore customer faith in their product. we were lucky that injury did not result from the failure of the parts needed to stop the car.

The prius seems to accelerate while stepping on the brake at slow speeds--the car feels like it jerks forward. this usually happens while i am on a road with potholes. *kb

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 toyota prius. while driving approximately 20 mph the contact depressed the brake pedal and it fell to the floor board. the contact was able to avoid crashing into several vehicles he turned onto a sidewalk and hit a street lamp, which then crashed on top of the vehicle, causing extensive damage. a police report was filed. the police officer inspected the vehicle and confirmed the brakes had failed. the vehicle was towed to an auto body shop. the vehicle was included previously in the recall under nhtsa campaign id number: 10v039000 (service brakes, air:anti-lock:control unit/module) and had the recall repairs performed. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 8,190 ....updated 12/03/12 *bf updated 01/11/12

I depressed the brake pedal and, instead of slowing down, my car surged forward for about 20 feet before brakes engaged and the car stopped --- just before the intersection (red light). i barely avoided hitting a truck in front of me (i was able to drive around). road surface was dry, without any potholes, bumps, etc. i took the car to the toyota service center. after checking my car they informed me that the computer did not detect any malfunctions, the test drive was also uneventful,so that nothing could be done to resolve the problem. this car's braking is obviously unpredictable and it is ,without a doubt, not safe to drive. *tr

When i was pulling into a parking spot, the brakes failed and the vehicle accelerated on its own causing me to run over the cement parking stop and crash into a cement wall. the vehicle then back up from the concussion and accelerated once again causing me to crash twice. i finally came to my senses and shut the vehicle off. i had been noticing the brakes feeling strange prior to this incident. this caused $6,400 in damage. toyota was alerted, had the vehicle inspected and claim it revealed no evidence of any sort of malfunction or defect. in my heart, i know that is not true. this was a very frightening experience and i dread this happening again. *tr

2010 toyota prius. consumer states when one of the front tires travels over uneven payment specifically an indentation in the road the braking action fails momentarily *tgw the consumer stated the vehicle lunged forward a few feet, before the brakes engaged again. the dealer informed the consumer the issue had to do with the abs/trac system. *jb

I purchased my 2010 prius in august 2010. for the past year, i have had problems with the brake system when attempting to brake at low speeds. when braking at low speeds, such as stopping at a red light or stop sign, if the car hits a bump or a pothole, it stops braking and instead accelerates forward a bit. it is extremely frightening and i find it exceptionally dangerous. i have come extremely close to hitting the vehicles in front of me on several occasions. i now have to try to conscientiously adjust and drive very, very slowly when braking on uneven road surfaces since i have come to anticipate this problem. however, many times there is no way to avoid the car's surge of power. i believe this is a highly dangerous situation with my vehicle. a simple internet search will demonstrate that this problem exists and was not resolved with the recall in march 2010. i purchased my prius, new, five months after the problem was allegedly fixed and i have had this problem since day one. the brakes have been examined on my vehicle by a toyota dealer and they appear to be fine. i highly believe that a recall is appropriate to fix this dangerous braking issue. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 toyota prius. the contact stated that the vehicle was serviced under nhtsa campaign id number: 10v039000 (service brakes, air: antilock: control unit/module). the contact noticed that after the recall repairs, there was an abnormal increase in stopping distance when braking over uneven pavement. the contact stated there have been several occasion when the vehicle floated into an intersection because the failure prevented the vehicle from stopping. the vehicle was taken to the dealer four times where the contact was told there were no failures with the vehicle because the braking system was operating as designed. the failure mileage was unavailable.

I just got an email from mycarstats.com which after reading through complaints one hit me and i thought "that's exactly what happened to us". at the time, a couple of months ago, with toyota's known problems, i told my wife to remember this and let me know if it ever happens again (which it has not). the problem occurred when we were traveling at a low speed and i hit an speed bump the vehicle surged like i had bumped the gas pedal only i had my foot on the brake.

Ever since i purchased my 2010 prius in november, 2009 the brakes have been a problem. when braking while driving over a bump or pothole the car looses braking ability and there is a surge of power. the dealership claims there is no problem and the recall work has not made a noticeable difference. *tt

2010 toyota prius, with 29000 miles. pulling into a parking lot at a very slow speed, applied brakes to stop car, but it did not stop it, it started jerking forward, until it stopped when it struck a fence, injuries occured as a result, seat belt did not old back driver, and driver wipped forward and back striking steering wheel. vehicle was towed to toyotta dealer. still wating for toyota corp to advise of error that occured, data from cmputer has been downloaded by a private firm and delivered to toyota. 8/9/11 accident occured on 7/25/11 at 14:30. *tr

Brakes failed. 2010 toyota prius. 160,000 miles on vehicle. when i started the car, i had no brakes. when i put the car in gear, i then had brakes. i had brakes when i pulled up to a stop sign. as i waited for traffic i then had no brakes. when i began to move i had brakes, but then as i gained speed, the brakes went out. i managed to stop with the emergency brake. checked the brake fluid: completely full. dealer said the master cylinder went bad. orginal brakes on vehicle; not even half used. highway miles on vehicle. very hot day. i believe it is electrical, dealer says mechanical. had there been an accident, this incident would be looked into. as it is, no dealer will look into a car that is out of warrenty. i complained for 5 months about the brakes when i first bought the car new. dealer told me that there is nothing wrong with the brakes. even after the recalls, there still is problems with the brakes. now i believe there is a problem with the master cylinder, -the electric component part of it- but toyota will only look into it when there is a serious accident.

When approaching an intersection i hit a pothole & the car suddenly quit braking and required me to do evasive driving maneuvers to assure i did not hit the vehicle in front of me or the light pole at the intersection. similar "brake release" has happened on multiple occasions. when bringing this matter to the dealership on multiple occasions i have been told that this is standard operation. when pressed they say itis just the way the car is designed. thus, my complaint to you from the lobby of my toyota dealership as they remove the braking comments, again, from my appointment record history. please force the company to resolve this matter as i worry about my health & that of my four children who ride in the car with me. it should not be acceptable for a company to know that their vehicle is unsafe & tell customers, "sorry, we have a problem but we do not care... *tr

I am experiencing the same problem as many other 2010 prius owners. the brakes fail briefly when driving over large potholes located on a grade. i have discussed the problem with a toyota dealership and was told that they are aware of the problem but until a recall/solution is issued there is nothing that they can do. they told me to brake harder when driving over potholes to compensate for the problem; the brakes, however, do not fail with every pothole. it seems like the potholes have to be a certain size, yet from the driver's seat, it's extremely difficult to judge the size of the pothole and thus if the car will lose braking power. so, slamming on the brakes for every pothole is just as dangerous as not since stopping too quickly can cause a rear-end accident. i live in a city overwhelmed with hills and potholes so this problem happens nearly every time i drive the car. it has gotten to the point where i am fearful to drive my car since i have had several close calls and know that unless this problem is fixed, it will eventually cause an accident. briefly losing braking power may seem insignificant but until you have actually driven the car and experienced the lack of control the only comparison that i can make is driving on ice. you feel utterly helpless for the time that the car is out of your control, even if it's only a few seconds, during which time you are legally and morally accountable for what your car does or hits. there are plenty of other road hazards and safety concerns, whether or not my car is going to stop when i apply the brakes should not be one of them. i implore you, please investigate this problem and require that toyota take responsibility for fixing it and ensuring the safety of prius owners, pedestrians and other drivers. thank you.

Car stop on crowed warning appered on dash hybid over heating car stop. had to restat car. by time pulled to shoulder warning light whent off. car smelled of burning this happen on friday on sat brough car to santa monica they had no answer. as needed more info had car towed on monday left car till sat. their diagnosis using gas and brake at same time how do you do this with one right foot? . you never drive with the left foot computoe is in error

While driving, when vehicle is coasting (decelerating) in eco mode/engine off and brakes are applied under specific conditions such as passing over a man-hole cover or pothole the following occurs: car decelerates, as wheel/tire hits an anomaly in the road surface the brakes momentarily fail and the car surges forward as the engine starts. the sensation is a loss of braking force, plus momentary surge in the forward direction. reaction to this situation is mild panic and overbraking, (literally slamming on the brake pedal). this problem can be recreated faithfully at one road close to a stopsign/intersection. this problem has occurred for months. recently (11/30/11) when following a car on this specific road the car stopped abruptly due to an animal jarting into the road. i applied the brakes, brake anomaly occurred and felt i could not stop in time. evasive driving measures forced me into the on-coming traffic lane to avoid a collision. toyota unwilling to address this issue at the dealer or corporate. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2010 toyota prius. the contact stated while driving at low speeds in inclement weather and trying to decelerate the vehicle would not stop moving and it crashed into the rear of another vehicle. there were no injuries from either vehicle. a police report was filed. the vehicle was not towed because it wasn't a major crash. the manufacturer was then contacted and they advised him that they were unaware of any failures in regards to the brakes. the failure mileage was approximately 65,000. updated 08/31/2011 *ln *tr

Car abs light comes on, and at the same time vehicle loses brake assist or brake assist becomes uneven. car has had three brake light failures - 1 with previous owner and 2 with current owner. first failure was repaired by resetting the computer, we think. with current owner, dealer has replaced the antilock sensor two times, and with the second sensor replacement toyota now has pronounced the vehicle as safe. since the brakes failed after the first sensor replacement, we have little confidence that the problem was solved with the second sensor replacement. we are concerned about vehicle safety, especially since the car is frequently driven in heavy washington beltway traffic. typically car runs for some time and then fails, so we do not know if and when it will happen again. dealer and toyota have been unsupportive to our concerns. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 toyota prius. the contact stated that the brakes were applied but the vehicle did not respond or slow down. the abs warning light illuminated and the driver had to use the parking brake to stop. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer who replaced the master cylinder. the failure continued. the vehicle was taken back to the dealer where it was scheduled for a second repair. the vin was unavailable. the current mileage was approximately 100,000 and the failure mileage was 97,000.

Sudden loss of braking while slowing down while going over a bump. apparently the regenerative braking fails, and the car relies on only friction braking when going over a bump. this gives the feeling of brake failure and unintended acceleration, and the only way to prevent an accident is to push hard on the brakes. this happens consistently, and has since the car was new. the toyota abs ecu flash was performed, and made little or no difference.this is very disconcerting to say the least, and will lead to accidents. toyota claims that this is the "normal" operation of the abs system - in reality it has nothing to do with the loss of traction. check out these data: http://priuschat.com/forums/gen-ii-prius-technical-discussion/93233-data-brake-loss-aka-sudden-acceleration-after-bump.html. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2010 toyota prius. the contact stated as he was pulling into a parking space, he crashed into a wall because of the brake pedal engaged. the contact stated the accelerator pedal and brake pedal was not positioned properly. the contact tried to stop the vehicle and his foot moved off of the accelerator and under the brake pedal. the manufacturer inspected the vehicle and stated the space between the accelerator and brake pedal meet their specifications. the failure and current mileages were 2,600. updated 6/8/11 *cn updated 06/15/11

I travel quite a bit these days and on my way home from coachella music festival, my brakes gave out. i mean to say, pushing the pedal all the way down, no resistance, no slowing, a completely limp pedal....until i repeatedly stomped on it and the car locked and skidded to a stop, feet away from the car in front of me. the brakes returned intermittently, so i took the right hand lane at 40mph and tested the brakes regularly until i got to my dealership. scariest thing ive ever experienced. ive had the car since august 09' and currently have 43k miles on it. i know thats a lot, and its unfortunately outside of my warranty now, but i wanted to log it here, as soon as i could. it started one day before the freeway incident, whenever i would depress the pedal, a loud high pitched squeak would come out. i didnt think much of it outside of "better get that looked at" but didnt notice any brake failure. the next morning, i turned on the car and every dashboard light came on and a fast consistant beeping went on for about 5 minutes, during which time the brake pedal had zero resistance. i sat there with a serious wtf look on my face, when out of nowhere, the dash lights went away, as did the beeping, and the car drove as normal with full regular brake pressure (besides the squeak). i received a call back from the dealership. they say it's going to be $3k for a master cylinder replacement and that toyota corporate wouldn't aid in the cost, despite my hybrid warranty still covering the hybrid ecu (the master cylinder unit includes the ecu). [xxx] (my dealership service manager) said herself that it was not my fault and that the part is not repairable, "it either works, or it does not. it must be replaced". this could have been catastrophic, had i been any closer to the car in front of me. the failure of one part (which failed through no fault of the customer) rendering the brakes nearly useless is too scary not to report here. Driving on a rain covered road and hit a rough spot in the road. brakes did not engage at all for about 1 second. was able to stop after that and just avoided rear ending a car at a stop sign.

I drive a 2010 toyota prius. in the last week i have noticed on several occasions that when braking when coming up to a traffic light, all of a sudden the pressure on the pedal decreases and the breaking power fades. then in panic i start pumping the pedal which after a split second gets the brakes to kick in again. luckily the car has so far then come to a halt before i hit the car in front of me. my toyota dealer has dismissed my claim saying that they checked the car and the computer shows no error code. they told me that everything is fine basically dismissing my claims of a near crash. they say there is nothing they can do and if the computer shows no error everything must be fine. the first occurrence of this was on the same day when i had to brake very hard to avoid a crash. on that occasion the brakes worked fine but driving home the same night i had the first occurrence of the above described situation resulting in a near crash. *tr

2010 toyota prius. consumer states problem with the abs system *tgw the consumer stated the first time he went to the dealer for the abs problem, they were unable to find a defect. one month later, the consumer returned to the dealer and they reprogrammed the abs and the brakes worked fine for about one week. soon, the brakes began slipping again and ultimately, the consumer crashed into another vehicle. the consumer stated it seemed the brakes would fail when he applied the brake, released his foot and then braked again. *jb

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 toyota prius. the contact stated that when starting the vehicle, he noticed that the brakes would not operate as they should if the vehicle was warm. when depressing the brakes, he would have to apply extreme force in order to get the brake pedal to engage. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where they advised the contact that they were unable to diagnose the failure. the contact mentioned that the failure only occurred when driving during the morning hours, after the vehicle had been sitting overnight. the manufacturer had not been contacted. the failure mileage was approximately 10,000. the vin was unavailable.

2010 toyota prius--inconsistant braking and varying brake pedal pressure requirements. when braking, brake pedal travel distance varies. at times no brake action after pedal has been partially depressed requiring more brake pressure to re-engage brakes. sometimes occurs when gas engineswitches to electric or vice versa, other times inconsistent brake action occurs with either power source. frankly you never know how the brakes will perform. taken to dealer-i was told no problem found. they would not keep the car for days to continue tests. this is my fourth prius and this vehicle has more problems and concerns than all the others combined. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 toyota prius. the contact was braking from approximately 30 mph and approaching a traffic stop when the brakes failed. the contact veered off the road and crashed into a snow bank. the vehicle was towed to the dealer and the contact was advised that they would have to turn the vehicle over to the manufacturer and wait for a diagnostic on the vehicle. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure and current mileage was approximately 4,000.

When i am driving and hit a pothole, the car jolts forward. it's a pretty scary feeling to be out of control when that happens. i don't drive often, so i can only imagine how many more times this could happen. i do like my car and is only a year old, but this is quite concerning. i am extra careful, but what if i hit someone in the street or the car in front of me. i have seen a few complaints about this same exact reason. please something has to be done about it before someone gets hurt. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2010 toyota prius. the contact stated that while driving over railroad tracks she tried to apply the brakes and the pedal went all the way down to the floor. the contact mentioned that she waited a couple of seconds before she applied the brakes again and they functioned normally. the dealer said that it was normal for the vehicle to function that way on uneven surfaces. the manufacturer was not contacted. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure and current mileage were 22,000.

I gently drive my 2010 toyota prius in eco mode to maximize fuel economy. every weekday, since january 2011, i slow on a certain road to make a right turn. the road has a manhole cover recessed about 1 inch into the road along the path of my passenger side tires. every time i drive over this manhole cover the prius completely loses ability to brake for about 1/2 second, then braking is reestablished. there are other small bumps i drive over at other places which have the same results to the prius braking system. yesterday (26 oct 2011) something different but possibly associated happened while driving over a bump. this time i was accelerating after having made a right turn from a complete stop. while still accelerating after the turn i signaled left and proceeded to merge into the left hand lane. as the prius right front tire drove over the reflective lane marker imbedded in the road surface (the marker sticks out about 1/2 inch from road surface) the prius went out of control. the car suddenly and severely pulled hard to the left and rapidly slowed, i struggled against the cars actions to avoid hitting the raised center median. my first though was that i must have had a complete and instantaneous blow out on the front left tire. my reaction was to immediately remove my foot from the accelerator. then as i was further assessing my options and the surrounding traffic the prius regained control and i was able to continue driving down the road as if nothing had ever happened. as the prius reinstated control i heard a beep come from the dashboard, however i was not quick enough to notice if any warning lights had engaged during the incident. when i looked at the displays everything appeared normal. i also check the car externally and everything appeared normal. all incidents are on high quality road surfaces with dry pavement. dealer indicates no recalls. *tr

Incident #1 on january 5, 2011 - sudden change in braking performance caused crash. accident occurred in company parking lot. there was snow on the ground. i attempted to slow down to make a right turn. the car initially started to slow down. but as i attempted to turn to the right the car started to slide. i tried to control the slide with the brakes but the car would not slow down and it slid into a stone curb causing over $1,700 in damage to the car. there was no feeling of any braking occurring. there was no feeling of the abs brakes pulsing to control the slide. incident # 2 on january 19, 2011 - sudden change in braking performance created dangerous stopping condition. i was approaching a red light at an intersection going about 30 mph. there was no snow on the ground. the road was wet. i applied the brakes and the car initially started to slow down. suddenly the brakes were no longer slowing the car down. i thought the car was going to fail to stop at the intersection. i increasingly applied more and more pressure on the brake pedal and the car began to slow down. the car did finally stop and did not cross the intersection. the brake pedal pressure that i had to apply was extreme - it felt like a car with power assisted brakes but that the power assist had failed. there was no feeling of the abs brakes pulsing to control the braking of the car.

My driving record was clean until this 2010 prius. in one year i have had two accidents and several incidents, all of which i am now convinced due to brake failure. the first accident took place end of december 2010. i was going only about 10 mph. i hit the brakes repeatedly to try to get the car to stop. at the time i thought the car did not stop because of ice, but now after this 2nd accident and researching other prius reports, i am convinced this first accident was also because the brakes failed to work. since i did not suspect this at the time, i did not report it or have the brakes checked when the car was repaired. the 2nd accident was last night, dec 8th, 2011. i was traveling between 25-30 mph. the brakes clearly failed to work, and i hit a car stopped at the traffic light in front of me. i had plenty of distance to stop. the car did not slow down, if anything, it may have speeded up, but i cannot definitely say this, as i was too freaked out looking at the car i was going to hit to check my speed. the road was not icy. the impact demolished the front end of the prius. my air bag also did not inflate. i have whiplash from this second accident. fortunately no one else was injured. i now realize i had several other brake 'slippage' problems last winter that did not result in accidents and i did not identify then as brake problems. i thought it was my snow tires, even though they were brand new. i took the car back to the tire dealer last month who said they had no other complaints about that brand of tire, but i so concerned i had them replace the tires anyway with new ones of a different brand. i have opened a case with toyota after i started to research 2010 prius and found a recall on this model and year from before i leased this car. toyota says there is not a recall on my vin#. i want toyota to take responsibility for this accident and take back the car. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2010 toyota prius. the contact stated that the repair for recall 10v039000 (service brakes, hydraulic) was performed february 2010. the contact attempted to stop at a traffic light and when they hit rough pavement, the vehicle would not stop properly and went through an intersection. the dealer inspected and stated that there was nothing wrong, the failure mileage was 18,654 and the current mileage was approximately 19,000. updated 02/09/11*lj updated 03/03/11

Tl*the contact owns a 2010 toyota prius. while stopped at a traffic light, the vehicle was hit from the rear by another vehicle. after the vehicle was hit, it accelerated to a high speed. the contact engaged the brakes but the vehicle continued to accelerate; the contact attempted to turn off the ignition but that did not stop the vehicle. the vehicle changed directions and crossed over a grassy area and crossed over three lanes of traffic and crashed into a concrete median. the contact stated that all the lights failed. the two passengers were injured. a police report was filed. the vehicle was destroyed. the vin was unavailable. the current and failure mileages were unknown.

I had taken an exit after having driven about 15 miles on hwy 85 & had my foot off the accelerator as there was red signal ahead. before coming to a full stop the light turned green so put my foot on the accelerator but than had to brake almost within seconds as i saw a car ahead at the next green light not moving. the car felt like it surged & drove what i believe was abnormal distance with my front crashing under the back of an old buick. i had 3 other family members in the car who felt the same jerk. the road was wet from prior rain. there was not much damage to the car i crashed into but my car was considered total loss, 15 months old with 28k miles. no air bags were deployed. ironically i had picked up the car from the dealership just that morning because my daughter had complained about the jerking when applying brakes when she drives 20 miles to work in a stop & go traffic on hwy 280. this was not the first time she had complained to dealership about this either. the dealership like before reported nothing wrong. the car had the sw upgrade done when it was recalled in feb/mar. post the crash incident toyota had their expert examine the brakes who reported, brake reservoir fluid level 5mm above the max level & some white substance suspended in it near the surface, but still brake system to be in good condition.

On 2010 prius, brakes seem to release, generally for a moment, at low speeds when going over a bump on passenger side of the car. car seems to accelerate momentarily, until brakes are hit again. this has happened a number of times but is sometimes hard to recreate. car has 3000 miles. dealer says brakes operating as designed and recall adjustment has been made. *tr
