Problems with 2010 Toyota Prius SERVICE BRAKES, ELECTRIC

On average, the 2010 Toyota Prius starts to “feel” problems with the SERVICE BRAKES, ELECTRIC and its various aspects after 4 167 miles.

Recently reported SERVICE BRAKES, ELECTRIC problems on 2010 Toyota Prius

My 2010 toyota prius has always had problems braking over bumpy roads. at certain speeds firm braking over bumps causes the wheels to feel like they are slipping. toyota recalled the vehicle, and performed software upgrades that i feel did nothing to improve the situation. i recently brought the car back to be serviced and mentioned that it was still slipping over bumps but they claimed that they could not replicate the problem. this is not one specific incidence but multiple instances. *tr

Since i purchased the vehicle, the brake seem to have problems engaging; it is sluggish and i have to depress down hard on the pedal to engage the brakes. *tw

when i apply the brakes on this vehicle on a bumpy road the brakes either pause for a second to apply or the antilock systems seems to engage and dis-engage causing a serious distraction while braking. this occurs daily as the area i live in is mainly brick paved streets. *tr

My 2010 prius has seemed to 'go airborne" when i hit a certain spot on a local freeway exit ramp. when i apply my brakes at the end of the ramp, the brakes seem to miss as there is a depression in the pavement. it has happened more than once in that spot. i know it is the car because when i drove my saturn over that spot it never happened in three years of exiting there. i called my dealership two weeks ago and they had not heard about this problem. i called again this week and they were very aware of this. i did tell them that this was a potential hazard and hoped that all prius 2010 cars will be fixed. to be fair, i did not ask for them to repair my car since i had figured out how to prevent the skip (braking earlier, slowing more). but i think this should be part of a recall because this defect can happen quite out of the blue, which could cause an accident depending on road conditions. i experienced a similar incident last month on a slippery road (ice) but didn't make the connection. *tr

2010 toyota prius while braking, if the car drive over a bump, the car accelerates. to stop the car, the brakes must be pressed to the floor board to stop and avoid an accident. the car has had this problem since purchased 8/2009. *tr

This complaint is regarding my 2010 toyota prius which i purchased in august of 2009. before my first oil change was due i had noticed the vehicle's tendency to not respond instantly to my stepping on the brake, and then lurch forward when the brakes did engage. my brakes also squeal even when the weather is dry. i reported this to the dealer when i took it in for tire rotation and oil change. of course they told me the momentary pause of the brakes "was normal" and they did not hear the brakes squeal. well my vehicle is still doing both of these things and it seems i am not the only one with a concern regarding the brakes. please add my vehicle to the list of owners who are worried about these brakes. i have been driving for 40 years, every make and model, including tractors on the farm and i know there is a problem no matter what that dealership or toyota says. *tr

Vehicle - toyota 2010 prius. this particular problem is ongoing yet intermittent. description - the brakes grab unexpectedly. happens after vehicle has been driven, parked and then re-started. we never know when it is going to happen. we have to completely stop the vehicle (not turning it off) and begin again. then the problem appears to go away. the description of the brakes grabbing is as follows: when the brake pedal is pressed ever so slightly, they grab and the car comes to a jerky halt. we try it again and it repeats. this is not normal vehicle behavior. i cannot answer incident date since the problem is ongoing and intermittent. i will insert the approximate fist incident. *tr

Momentary lack of brakes during uneven road surface. situation has happened approximately five times. during braking, either uneven surface or on a dirt road, the car feels like it loses all braking for approximately 1-2 seconds. i first though it was the abs kicking in, but there is no pulsing just a loss of braking. does not happen all the time. i noticed condition within the first week of use. dealer said that it was the abs and nothing to worry about *tw

On 8-21-09, i took delivery on a 2010 toyota prius hybrid. since taking delivery, i have experienced intermittent ,momentary ,unintended acceleration and intermittent, momentary loss of braking. on 1-10-10, i took it in for the 5000 mile maintenance check, but did not tell the dealer my problems ,because i thought the car was still in a "breaking in" period and would resolve itself. but when i heard today 2-4-10, that the nhtsa was opening an investigation of the 2010 prius, i decided to add my complaint to the others. *tr updated 03/04/10 *bf

2010 prius ii with 2070 miles. purchased 8/2009. when going over a bump while stepping on the brake the car seems to act as if there is no brake on the downside of the bump. it feels like a slight acceleration then the brake engages.. this has occurred at least 4 times, but does not happen in every instant of a similar situation. *tr

While driving our 2010 toyota prius, we have noticed frequent occurrences of the car lurching while braking. this typically happens as the car hits a pothole or bump in the road while depressing the brake; the car lurches with enough force to sometimes push our bodies forward, against the safety restraints. nothing has been done to correct the failure, but we will be calling our dealership to discuss solutions. *tr

My 2010 pruis brake probelm as reported in the news. *tr

My 2010 toyota prius has a problem with braking specifically when the car moves on a bumpy or slippery surface, i can feel a pause in the braking and it feels as though i glide a few feet further than i should when i brake the pedal is fully pressed down. this has occurred since i bought the car in august 2009. *tr

Car loses braking during tight cornering or when driving over minor imperfections in road surface. *tr

My 2010 toyota prius experiences acceleration whenever i go over a pothole and attempt to brake the car. this has happened since i purchased the vehicle in august 2009. i am reporting it now because i now know that other owners have reported the same problem and it is not a result of my inability to get used to driving a hybrid. this is a serious safety issue as i'm alarmed that i may be unable to brake suddenly if this happens in a situation that warrants me to quickly brake. *tr

Re: 2010 prius braking issues beginning within the first 500 miles of owning vehicle. when first start up vehicle brakes are overly sensitive, making it impossible to stop the car smoothly. i have been able to correct the problem by shutting off the engine and restarting the car. this problem occurs randomly and has occurred twice within the last week. i have also had two times where the car has had an incredible surge forward, so strong that my head was thrown back into the head rest. the surge has been momentary and has the feeling like going up a steep incline on a roller coaster when it first accelerates. because these events were such a surprise and so short in duration i cannot recall the conditions (whether i was braking, coasting, or on the gas pedal) but i do know i was going at a slow speed. i have had two occurrences of this surge both within weeks of each other in the fall of last year. i took my car into the dealer regarding both of the above issues in the fall of last year, but they could not get the car create either of the above problems. at that time i asked if they had any similar complaints and they said they had heard of no other such complaints. when the car was taken in to the dealer for routine service in november my husband again asked about the oversensitive braking issue and again no problem was found or solution provided. the oversensitive brake and the surge create physically and emotionally uncomfortable conditions. no damage has occurred because of these problems. i have driven the car with under these conditions figuring until there are complaints it would be hard to recreate these problems at the shop. when i first took my car in to address these issues i told the dealer it felt like it was a computer glitch or electronic problem rather than mechanical. and asked it might show up on the cars computer diagnosis system. *tr

I am the owner of a 2010 toyota prius, since july 2009. i have had several (approx 5) incidences of odd behavior with my brakes. it has happened each time when i go over a bumpy surface and apply the brake pedal. the car seems to lunge forward for an instant and then maintains. several weeks back this happened and when i researched this on the net i found many others had this same experience. with the recent events, i felt it necessary to make this report. *tr

Every time we drive down a hill near our house and hit a pothole/crack in the road, the 2010 prius seems to accelerate through the pothole even though i am breaking down the hill. this has happened since the first day we drove the car (in august 2009). there have been no accidents or injuries since this road is not heavily traveled, but it makes me hesitant to drive my car if i have to go down that hill. *tr

2010 prius brake problem--i too have had a few occurrences of the brakes on my 2010 prius briefly failing. it happens if i brake while going over a pothole while braking. most, but not all of the time this happens on a wet road. the brake pedal feels "mushy" and then in less than a second the regular brakes take over. i have never had the abs system kick in--at least i have never felt the characteristic "shudder" of the brake pedal. so far, not even a close call, but it is very disconcerting. date below is approximate first date. there have been 8-10 episodes. the car has about 9500 miles on it. *tr

When driving my new 2010 toyota prius iii model, i have experienced sudden loss of braking when the car hits a bump while braking. for example, when approaching a stop sign, i press down on the brakes, at which point the car begins to brake, and then the car hits a small bump or pothole and the brakes let up suddenly and it feels as though i lose control of the car while still approaching the intersection. i have to press down again hard on the brakes in order to stop before going through the stop sign after the brakes failed me. luckily, each time it has happened i have been able to stop in time, however i have to brake very hard in order to stop and it is not smooth. the dealer has so far ignored the complaint and has not repaired or replaced any parts. *tr

On my prius 2010 (that i bought in july 2009) i noticed that when i hit a pothole, and had the brakes pressed; the car quickly accelerated for a split second. this has happened twice. *tr

Driving our 2010 toyota prius over bumps and potholes the car braking system is not working properly. it doesn't stop immediately after the brakes are pressed. we have brought the car in for service and toyota they say the car is fine. *tr

My 2010 toyota prius has issues with the braking system at different times, particularly when traveling over bumps, etc. there is a momentary loss of braking control. there have been no accidents but certainly scary to drive. nothing has been done about the failure. i contacted my dealership as the car is still under warranty and they said all they could do was take my name and number down. *tr

When braking while going over bumps, the car lurches forward and doesn't seem to grab until after the bump. it is especially noticeable when exiting a high speed road onto a decelration lane. it has been ongoing since purchasing the vehicle. i have made adjustments in operating the vehicle to minimize the number of occurences, but cannot always foresee the bumps or ridges in road surfaces that precipitate the incident. *cn

Momentary loss of braking during a turn or coming upon a speed bump. has happened 4 times since purchase of vehicle. 6/6/09 *cn

Experienced brake "slippage" on 2010 prius. "slippage" or quick temporary feeling that brake gave way occurred while descending a small hill with bumpy pavement. occurred about 6 times without incident. occurred also more recently once on icy pavement. *tw

I have had repeated occurrences of the 2010 toyota prius braking system abnormality recently reported in the news, since purchasing the vehicle in july 2009. i reported this at my first oil change to the dealers service center, but they did not investigate the matter. *tr

My 2010 toyota prius lurches forward when i brake going over a bump, pothole or manhole and sometimes slippery surfaces. it is brief. we reported it to the dealer at around 5000 miles. they thought it was the anti-lock brakes but i have driven a car with ani-lock brakes for over ten years and this feels different. i bought the car in june 2009. *tw

Toyota 2010 prius intermittent brake failure when braking on rough pavement- i purchased a new 2010 toyota prius on june 30, 2009 and have approximately 6400 miles on the vehicle. we experience two issues when braking on rough pavement. first is that the brakes seem to fail when applied in normal non panic stopping if there is wet or rough pavement. second when the first symptom occurs it is also accompanied by what feels like an increase in torque at the front wheels so that not only do the brakes feel like they are failing the car lurches forward from the added thrust. *tr

While applying the brakes to slow down or to come to a stop, if the car hits a bump, pothole or the like, the brakes release momentarily, causing the car?s momentum to continue forward longer/further than you would normally expect or want. this is especially dangerous when coming to a stop at a new york city pedestrian crosswalk or trying to slow down with a car close in front of you. i brought the car into the dealership and had it evaluated by toyota's field technical specialist who reported the following, ""when [the car] senses impending wheel slip, it will first disable the regenerative brakes. when it does that it feels like the car sort of accelerates because you lost the regenerative braking and you're using the brake assist that you have from your foot. so that is 'normal operation' on the system. it is working as designed." despite the explanations for why this is happening and whether or not this is ?normal operation?, the bottom line is, if the car is not stopping when it should, the safety of passengers and pedestrians is in jeopardy. i called and wrote two certified letters to toyota's customer experience department and to akio toyota, and received a phone call from an executive analyst from the president's office. no toyota representative would do anything in regards to the problem--they maintain that the braking operation is normal. i have seen other complaints on the nhtsa web site and on prius owners blogs that contradict toyota's assertion and support the claim that the brakes are indeed a safety issue that must be addressed.*tr

I have a 2010 toyota prius. on a daily basis i drive over two separate speed bumps on the steep downhill-incline entrance to my office parking garage, at a low speed (always less than 10 mph). upon going over each bump, my brakes (which are engaged due to the steep downhill incline) disengage briefly and then re-engage. sometimes the brakes also momentarily disengage when i am continuing down the ramp in the parking garage, even in the absence of a speed bump. this seems to happen most often when i am turning. each time the brakes disengage, the car slips and i feel it is not under control. i have tried to avoid these symptoms by keeping my speed extremely low in the parking garage (5 mph), but that only works sometimes. the "date of incident" is really on a daily basis every day i drive into work. this symptom has occurred consistently since i purchased the car in june, 2009 and continues to this day. the brake system i am referring to is the brakes that are activated when i depress the brake pedal while driving. *tr

The brakes on my 2010 prius have a problem when going slowly over uneven, bumpy road conditions. the car seems to lurch forward during the braking sequence. it is very startling. luckily no one has been in fornt of me, close enough to make contact. it has happened 5 times. i cannot predict when it will occur. when i first told the service dept at dealership, within 2 weeks of owning car, they siad it's just something to get used to with the braking sensor or somethiong and it isn't actually accelerating forward. i mentioned it again last week after the issues with the other cars accelerators, and the service dept said i have to replicate it with them, to address it. i called them after info was broadcast on the radio, and they said they had not heard anything. now i hear in the news that they knew of this problem and almost exactly describe it as i experience it. i drive over this type of road daily, and am trying to avoid as much as possible. *cn

My prius stops braking and almost feels like it is accelerating if i apply the brake just as i hit a bump or hole in the road. this feels very dangerous--if i were needing to stop suddenly to avoid a potential accident and my brakes did not work due to a bump in the road, it could lead me to crash into the object i'm trying to avoid. this has happened multiple times in the months since june 09 in which i bought my car.*tr

I own a 2010 toyota prius, 3rd generation. when i am braking and hit a pothole or a manhole cover, the car surges forward. i took it to the dealership today and they checked the car and said they couldn't find anything wrong with it. they also said they had no knowledge of any kind of braking or surging problems with this vehicle. our dealer was eastern shore toyota in daphne, al. this has happened approximately 6 different times since we bought the car in 2009. it started to occur approximately in july 2009, with the most recent episode in january 2010. *tr

Since purchasing my 2010 toyota prius, i have had serious issues and safety concerns with the braking system. when you brake and hit a bump or pothole or large dip, the brake cut out and the car is not controllable until a few moments later. i reported this to the dealer and was assured it was performing as intended and normal for an anti-lock system. having used anti-lock brakes for nearly 20 years, i know this to not be the case and stated this. i now understand this problem is widespread. my most recent email to toyota is attached: date: february 7, 2010 11:46:13 am est dear i received your email address this morning and felt i should forward on my earlier emails (regarding braking problems with my 2010 prius) to colonial toyota directly to you - please find them below. i understand that late friday toyota corporation advised dealers that corporate would announce a fix early this week. i honestly would have preferred to have learned this from colonial, than from the ny times. as i expressed during my sales experience and troubles with cash for clunker program - i understand there are certain things as a dealer that you are not in control of, but i expect and would appreciate clear and timely communication. moreover, given the seriousness of this as a safety concern, i am concerned that the service department did not at least offering to help look into my braking issue when i verbally reported it during service. instead, i was assured it was normal for anti-lock brakes and my clear statement that it was something i had never encountered before, despite owning anti-lock equipped cars for the past 19 years was dismissed. i would like to reiterate my request below regarding bringing my vehicle in immediately to fix the issue (and related damage) as soon as you able to and providing a loaner at toyota's expense. i look forward to hearing from you as soon as possible. *tw

I noticed my breaks would not function properly when i tried to stop on uneven pavement or wet pavement. my husband later drove the car and thought we got hit from behind when he tried to break. the car surges forward before it stops. i took the car to the dealership in late november-december for the problem they tell me the brakes function properly. i have since scheduled another appointment, they did not seem to care that a brake announcement had been made on my prius. i explained to them that if they did not want to fix or address my problem, that when i hit someone because my car does not stop and surges forward, i will sue toyota. i am considering filling for lemon law. i feel very unsafe. i drive my children to school everyday and feel that toyota does not seem to care if the prius brakes function properly. *tw

My wife experienced braking anomalies immediately after beginning to drive her new 2010 prius. i attributed these to the way the car drives and i haven't noticed anything the few times i have driven it. but this is something she has been reporting since she first began driving it (6 months) and she is a perceptive person (m.d.). with discussions of whether to recall i figured i should report the problem. *tr

2010 toyota prius. when first starting the car before the gasoline engine engages, the brakes grab suddenly when applied (e.g. backing out of the garage or leaving a parking space), and continue to do so until the gas engine starts. also, there is momentary loss of braking when going over bumps (like speed bumps.) *tr

Bought 2010 prius in june. have continuing brake issue when go over bump, car lurches forward. continuing problem. below where says incident date put in about when first noticed it. *tr

While slowing down (foot on the brake) for a light or road bump, the car suddenly accelerates until i press harder on the brake. this has occurred about 10 times since i purchased the car summer of 2009. no accident but almost rear-ended the car in front of me several times. brought to toyota and told nothing was wrong and i wasn't used to the abs system. this can't explain the sudden acceleration and near miss accidents. *cn

Hitting a bump while braking causes the brakes to not work properly for a split second, giving the feeling that the car is lunging forward. *tr

I purchased a 2010 prius in june, 2009. i have noticed a "surge forward" if i apply the brakes while going over bumps like railroad tracks or potholes. this has happened repeatedly. i just saw a report in the media that others have had the same problem. i will report it to my dealer in madison, wisconsin. *tr

Just adding fuel to the fire, but i have a 2010 toyota prius and there is definitely a braking issue. specifically, i notice it when i hit a pothole (and i live in los angeles, which is all the time). i frankly don't know whether there's actual acceleration or just total loss of braking (i basically notice it at slower city speeds--braking while turning a corner, for example), but there is definitely a momentary "surge." it happens regularly (ignore the date i had to enter below)--so much so that at this point i anticipate it. *tr

Purchased 2010 prius v apporx. mid-june. drving in first wk of ownership, observed break problem. vehcile had approx. 50 miles on. drining 25-30 mph on straight, smooth, blacktop road on a sunny, nice day. a car backed out of a 45 deg parking spot without warning, i had to slamp on breaks at the same time the gas/electric motors were switching. the break pedal lost feeling that it had pressure until i pushed the break pedal another 2 inches more to feel pressure and that the breaks were grabbing. i did not report this in june, due to i thought i was imagining things due to the emergency stop took my attention to some degree. i was a service manager for chrysler years ago, so i am very familiar with vehcile mechanical systems and i have purchsed approximately 25 new vehciles in my lifetime.

Brakes grab too quickly, jolting the car to a stop. *tr

1. slowing down to make a right turn, traveling around 15 mph 2. while traveling over a pothole or uneven road surface, brakes suddenly disengaged and car continued forward 3. brakes reengaged after about a second later. *tr

My 2010 prius, which was purchased in may has had the very brake issues that are being reported. when a bump is hit, the car jerks forward quite unexpectedly when the brakes are applied. i thought it was just my imagination or that i hit a slick spot, but it has happened many times. the fact that toyota knew about this and hid it from the first prius owners is unbelievable. since they have been fixing it on newer models and did not tell owners of the first ones off the production line t, i think a class action law suit should be undertaken. i am very angry and would like some mechanisms for getting rid of this car, given toyota's deception. *tr

While slowly decelerating using the regenerative brakes, the regenerative brakes turn off occasionally at low speeds (5-10 mph). there is a very short (<1 second) burst of forward movement before the actual brakes activate. during this whole time the brake pedal is consistently depressed. this burst forward does whip the driver back into the seat a bit due to the unexpected nature of this event. this has probably occurred about 5 times in the past 2.5 months since i purchased the vehicle. *cn

2010 prius, with no modification made since purchase. when driving and coming to a stop, the brake pedal was applied to stop the car. the car hit a pothole/sharp bump 5 feet before the stop sign and the car jerked forward frighteningly while the brake was depressed. the brake pedal lost its breaking ability for 1 or 2 seconds, but became operational again after that. during the 1 or 2 seconds, i felt i lost control of the car. this defect is reproducible and has occurred 5 times since i bought the car 6 months ago. this is very scary and i think will cause an accident if not fixed. *tr

My 2010 prius seems to momentarily lurch forward when driving over bumps and braking at the same time. it seems that the brake disengages momentarily and then re-engages. i have not had any accident, and the time of disengagement is very short, but it does scare me a little. *tr
