I understand toyota knew about the anti-lock brake issue on prius build before january 2010. i own a 2010 prius, purchased in october 2009. i have had one instance of momentary brake loss while driving over a bump. it was a bit frightening at the time, but the problem has not re-occurred. so i have not reported the incident until today. i assume many other prius owners may have experienced the same problem, but did not complain, since the occurrence is so infrequent. if toyota cares about safety, they will do the right thing and say "safety is toyota's number one priority. our engineers are working on a fix for the prius's with the anti-lock brake issue and rest assured, toyota will fix those vehicles." i am very disappointed that toyota knew about this problem and has not taken care of it. hasn't toyota learned enough from the sticky gas pedal problem. toyota needs to be proactive in maintaining its image as a reliable car company that cares about safety. *tr
I have a 2010 toyota prius, purchased on 7/24/09. on several occasions, the first being 12/05/09, the prius has reversed in a "jerky" fashion. i keep my foot on the brake, ease up on the pedal with the car in reverse, and the car lurches backwards at a surprising speed, and a speed which is unwarranted by the amount of pressure on the brake. this has happened 4-6 times in the last two months. i have never had this experience with any other car, and my fiance has experienced the problem when he drives my prius. it seems to occur on inclines and uneven surfaces. it has not yet caused an accident or injury, but i find this issue concerning. *tr
I own a 2010 prius, that i purchased september, 2009. in december i was driving in town, and came to a stop. when i came to the stop sign, i put my brakes on and hit a pot hole at the same time. it felt as though the car jerked forward and it was a second where i felt there was no brake. *tr
Early dec. 2009 i hit a pothole and felt my brakes fail for a second then grab again. at first i thought this was black ice but it happened again a week or so later and then again toward the end of dec. 2009. *tr
We purchased a 2010 prius in august of 2009 and have had the following recurring issues: 1. loss of braking when slowing down over rough or uneven pavement, gravel, wet leaves, snow, ice, cracked pavement, pot holes... the brakes engage for a second, and then we experience no braking at all for number of seconds. we took our prius into jon lancaster toyota in madison, wi where we purchased the vehicle and told the mechanic of the braking issues we were experiencing . he checked out the vehicle and said he could not find any issues with the braking system and said that he had never heard of this problem and neither had toyota. this lack of braking resulted in a rear end collision in december 2009. my husband was driving at very low speed in town one evening and this lack of braking issue occurred and he slid into another vehicle. my husband pumped the brakes four times and each time this delay in braking occurred. there was no braking happening at all. the car was slowing down faster when the brakes were not applied, than when the brakes were applied. there was fresh snow on the road. there was a dane county sheriff at the intersection and my husband and the person he hit ran the incident by the state patrol who agreed that it was appropriate for the two parties involved in the accident to exchange insurance and contact information and leave the scene without calling the local police. there was damage to our prius front bumper, and to the back bumper of the other vehicle. 2. occasionally when starting up the prius, the brake feels hard and can't be depressed all the way. if we try to drive the vehicle, the brakes grab and jerk the car violently. the only solutions seems to be to turn the car off and restart the car. *tr
My husband and i recently purchased a 2010 toyota prius. we have noticed repeated problems with the braking system. whenever we go over a pothole while braking, the car surges forward. this does not just appear to be a problem with the pressure on the brake pedal; the passenger can feel the surge as well. this problem is quite alarming. we are taking the car to the dealer today to address this issue. *tr
Intermittently, while i am braking when approaching an intersection the car will momentarily accelerate quickly. with pressure on the brake the car then slows. this has happened about 6 -10 times since i bought the car in sept. 2009. *tr
Experiencing same braking issue with my 2010 toyota prius that has been publicized over the last few days. i've noticed the momentary lapse of braking power on icy roads when trying to suddenly stop. i bought my prius in july 2009. *tr
I purchased a 2010 toyota prius in november 2009. about 10 times since then, i've felt the sensation of 'going airborne' when braking on a speed bump or uneven pavement. the sensation is momentary, and the brakes have always 'recovered'. there was only one time when i thought that an accident might happen, when i needed to brake suddenly behind another car. *tr
I own a 2010 prius. i notice that on many occasions, the warning lamp on the dashboard for the anti-skid system comes on very easily, when the car is not in any danger whatsoever of skidding, and that it sometimes comes on when the car is actually at a stop. i have also noticed that when driving on uneven pavement, at moderate speeds of about 30 mph, the brakes do not feel reliable, and that sometimes they feel very sloppy: slow to react and very soft in their impact. i have been driving earlier model prius cars for several years and did not notice this same problem before i started driving my 2010 prius. i am not confident about the brake system and feel reluctant to drive the car, except at very low speeds.
2010 prius iv problem with brakes when going over bumps or dips. brakes do not work while going over bump or dip. *tr
I have a 2010 prius. i have noticed that when i go over uneven ground (like potholes or bumps) or slick surfaces (especially train tracks and sewer covers) my brakes don't seem to work. it feels like i am not in control of my car, and for 2-3 seconds the car is not braking even though my foot is pressing on the brake. *tr
I have had my 2010 toyota prius iv since august 2009. over the past two to three months, i notice that sometimes when i brake, my car jumps forward a little bit before braking. it feels like skidding on ice but there is no ice around. it happens at least a few times every week. i have been lucky so far that this issue hasn't caused an accident. i now make sure i have extra space when braking because i can't seem to find a reason for this happening. there is no way to predict when the brakes will react that way. i am planning on contacting my dealership today. *tr
2010 toyota prius- if i drive over a pothole or a manhole cover while braking, the brakes feel like they release. *tr
Occasionally when braking at a relatively slow speed on a bumpy or slippery surface the brakes feel like they stop working. my immediate response is to press the brakes harder and that seems to resolve the issue. i don't remember any sense that the abs system kicked in during these situations. i have never not pressed harder on the brake pedal so don't know whether the loss of braking sensation would continue if no more pressure was applied to the brakes. i have also felt this sensation when braking while cornering at slower speeds. i don't know if a slippery or bumpy surface is always involved when i experience the loss of braking while turning, but at least on one occasion during cornering there has been a bump going from a slightly raised asphalt surface to lower concrete surface attached to the curb for the passenger side wheel only. *tr
2010 prius brake lag. *tr
I have not yet had this problem corrected, but when i decelerate in my 2010 toyota prius and i happen to go over a bump (can be a pothole, or ice, etc.), in all weather conditions, the brake sometimes disengages briefly and i have to re-engage to re-establish braking. the loss of braking is unrelated to the position of my foot, it's as if the brake suddenly is not present (not a decrease in brake pressure). i've caught it quickly each time, so never thought to complain until the recent recalls. *tr
2010 toyota prius accident- we had noticed the braking problems but it was not an issue until we were involved in accident where the brake did not stop the car. and in light of the current event, it is best to complaint about about. *cn
Pulling into a parking spot, hit a small bump, the car lurched forward while my foot was firmly on the brake. *tr
While driving my 2010 toyota prius, i notice that at times the car fails to brake adequately. this happens when braking over uneven pavement. the feeling is as if the car speeds up a little. it's disconcerting. *tr
While attempting to brake at a stop sign as i was moving slowly up an incline in a residential neighborhood, my 2010 prius hybrid seemed to lurch forward. this has only happened once in the three months since i purchased the vehicle, but it startled me. thank goodness there was extra distance between my car and the vehicle in front of me, or there could have been a fender bender. *tr
I have a 2010 prius bought in september. i have experienced the surge while braking about 4 or 5 times in 5,000 miles of driving. i didn't connect it with braking as it was a surge. i think that the roads were wet each time this happened. i stepped down hard each time and the surge disappeared after about a second or so. *tr
I have a toyota prius 2010 and it accelerates while braking on several occasions especially while applying brake during cruise control and breaking on going through uneven surface. i called toyota and they directed me to toyota dealer where i purchased my prius. i contacted bennett toyota in allentown, pa (that is where i purchased my car) and the service manager drove the car on 12/28/2009 with me and he said he couldn't find any problem; he said, he also tested the car for the specifications and the technicians couldn't find any problem with either cruise control or brake. *tr
Started up morning after rainy day, drove down hill to stop sign. approaching stop sign i applied brakes and noticed brakes didn't immediately slow me down. only after flooring the pedal and feeling a metal on metal type reaction did i come to a stop. this problem has not repeated itself. *tr
Faulty brakes on 2010 prius. i noticed within a week or so after purchase in november, 2009 that when going over a bump or pothole in the road and i used the brake pedal, there was a delay wherein the car seemed to accelerate over the problem in the road, nearly leading me to collision with another vehicle or pedestrian. since november it's been a constant, frightening problem. *tw
Occurring several times since purchase in october 2009, i experienced a slight burst of acceleration when hitting a pothole or sizeable bump in the road. during an exit onto a highway access road (20-30 mph) and a slowing for a 90 degree turn (10-20 mph) the car either disengaged the brakes or accelerated causing a very brief and unexpected lurch forward. after passing the road imperfection normal breaking returns. comparing this experience to other complaints filed, i believe my problem is the same and poses a potential danger to both the driver and traffic around the car. *tr
2010 toyota prius brake issues. when braking and the car hits a rough spot or pothole in the road the car does not brake well. in fact it lurches forward a few feet unexpectedly. *tr
Bought new car less than 10 days. drove 10-15 mph in downtown la following a car. thought it was me since car was new but i step on brake but it didn't respond quickly enough..result...rearended another vehicle. head similar complaints from wife's coworkers about prius brake responses so i thought i should file complaint. love the car but brake needs to be fixed if defected. lost $500 in insurance deductible. for all i know, it may have been prius defected brakes. $2000 approx. damages to prius. *tr
We purchased our 2010 toyota prius in june of 2009. i have noticed that when i accidentaly hit potholes and try to apply the brakes at the same time it feels like the brakes do not hold. i do not have a set date when i first noticed this, some time in late fall on a rainy night. i thought i was just imagining this until recently when i heard others were experiencing the same thing.i love this little car, but now i am afraid to take it anywhere.how do i find out the results of your investigation? *cn
Toyota prius 2010. brakes not working when on slippery service and when hitting bumps. *tr
We have had several instances of brake malfunction in our 2010 prius. when backing out of our garage, on 3 occasions, when my foot was just resting gently over the brake, it felt as though i was stomping on the brake. it did this 4-5 times where it lurched to a stop when i wasn't applying it but just resting my foot on it as i backed up. i had an incident where i was entering a car wash and when i went over a bump into the car wash stall, the car lurched uncontrollably forward. i tried to put the car into neutral and it wouldn't stay in neutral but kept popping back into drive an lurching forward.. also, we have 3 incidents in inclement weather where the anti-lock brakes did not work at all or did not work correctly. on a snowy day, i slid right through an intersection and the anti lock brakes did not kick in nor did the anti-lock brake indicator light come on. my husband had an incident where if felt as though the anti-lock brakes functioned only on one side of the car, propelling him straight sideways upon braking. we feel very strongly that there is a problem with this model of prius that poses a significant risk to our safety. *tr
I purchased a 2010 prius in october, 2009. on several occasions i have been braking and hit a pothole or bump in the road and my vehicle has accelerated momentarily. the first couple of times this happened, it was rather concerning and dangerous, as i was concerned i'd hit the vehicle in front of me. since then, i attempt to not brake directly over a pothole. *tr
When i brake on bumpy raods, the car sometimes learches and then the brakes engage, and stop the car.
Prius 2010 braking issue - problem has occurred at least 5 times; on rough surface, downhill surface or when wheels encounter a manhole or steel plate road cover. problem is recurring. car has 12,600 miles on it. *cn
We have a 2010 prius. my wife hit a pot hole when she was making a right turn. when she stomped on the brake the car didn't stop and it drove into the curb smashing the frp ground effects molding below the passenger door and behind the right front tire. i thought this was her fault but i believe we have a problem with the braking on our car. can i return this car?
2010 prius purchased july 2009. turning into my driveway while braking (which had a pothole in front of it) my car felt like it was lurching forward out of control after it hit the pothole. i would have thought that the pothole would impede my forward progress not increase it! i was going very slowly so the incident was momentary, but it did scare me. this happened several times before i learned how to avoid the pothole. i thought it was very strange but once i started to avoid the pothole i forgot about it. so i did not pursue it until i read the descriptions of the rough road complaints and realized that was exactly what had happened to me and that i should report it here. the dates, time and mileage are actually unknown because i did not make a note of it at the time. *tr
When driving on wet surfaces, my 2010 toyota prius hybrid will occasionally skid when the brakes are applied. this seems to happen at speeds under 25mph and only on wet surfaces. the first incident occurred when i was approaching a stop sign at a low speed. when i applied the brakes, the car began to slow down when it suddenly accelerated without cause. the acceleration only lasted for a second or two before the brakes started working again. i had my foot on the brake pedal the entire time and applied even pressure. this issue also occurs often when pulling into the underground parking garage of my condominium building. when the ramp is wet, this problem will often occur. to avoid this occurrence when pulling into the garage, i must proceed at a cautious pace, 5-7 mph. this is very disconcerting because i must make a right-hand turn with three feet from the bottom of the ramp to avoid hitting the wall of the garage. the last occurrence was on january 29th at 7pm. the roads were wet. as i approached a stop light to make a left-hand turn, i applied the brakes as i normally would in such conditions. the after the initial deceleration, the brakes felt like they had slipped and i began to accelerate (as described before). i had to turn into the adjacent lane to avoid hitting the car in front of me before the brakes were fully applied. i all, this problem has occurred three times while driving on wet roads, and 8+ times when driving down the wet ramp to my underground garage. i have contacted the toyota dealership where i purchased my vehicle to make them aware of this problem and was directed to file a report to nhtsa. i also called the toyota customer service line and was unable to read a representative. *tr
Deceleration, rough road surface, brakes fail for a short time. this has happened 3 or 4 times since purchasing the car. i did mention this to my service person on tuesday feb 2 when i was at the dealer for a different issue and he said he hadn't heard of issue on my prius, after hearing the new on wed that this is a known problem i called dealer back and will have car inspected monday morning feb 8. *tr
I have brake problems with my 2010 prius. now that i see it's in the news i realize i'm not the only one. the prius has issues when i'm braking and i go over any type of a bump in the road, or i go over a pothole cover. really there is a braking problem when i am braking and the car is driving over different road surfaces, or there is bad weather. the car lurches forward- almost feels like it's skipping a beat. it makes my heart jump, similar to a jolt. i feel every time that i will get into an accident, but i haven't yet... thankfully. this is a problem with the car and needs to be addressed immediately before someone dies, or gets seriously injured. this happens on average about 1-2 times a week. i drive approx 150 miles a week. *tr
I purchased a 2010 prius iv in june 2009. i live in the kansas city area. beginning in november when the weather turned cold, usually below freezing, i noticed that when i apply my brakes sometimes they will slip just for a fraction of a second. this usually occurs before the car has a chance to warm up but has occurred when the car is warmed up. the brakes will slip when i go over a portion of the road where the pavement is buckled, or there is a depression such as driving over a manhole cover, pothole or construction cut that was not properly filled. the experience is like braking over a small patch of ice. i notified the dealer of this problem in december but didn't make an appointment to have the car inspected. after reading an ap news release on this topic, which described the exact symptoms i am experiencing, i made an appointment for 12 feb to have the brakes inspected. i don't consider this to be a serious safety issue as i only experience this problem once every few weeks. *tr
Prius 2010 brake disfunction. filled out report to nhsta appx 3 months ago but was notified case was closed a few days later, no reason was given for closure. will someone please follow up on this issue.
This has happened approximately ten times since we bought our 2010 prius in august. i apply the brakes, the car starts to slow down, and then accelerates briefly. i thought that it was just that the brakes let up for a moment, but the last couple of times it has happened i realized that it's more like the car actually accelerates for a moment. it has happened several times when i'm getting off the highway, on the exit ramp, so i'm going for a relatively fast speed to slowing down. but it happens other times, too--for instance, when i'm driving in the city and stopping for a red light. tonight it happened and i would say that the car moved forward quickly for about 15 feet. i have had the car checked by toyota who has found nothing wrong with my brakes, but i know that this is a potentially dangerous glitch. *tr
Care speeds up with breaks applied when the car hits a bump. the brakes also grab when backing up. frequency: not often but it need to be corrected before someone gets hurt. reported to toyota. they have checked and found nothing wrong. there is not one date as it has happen several times over the last 7 months. *tr
2010 toyota prius, package 5 have owned for 6 months or so. when attempting to brake and go over pot holes or irregular road, the brakes disengage and the car continues forward for a longer distance than desired. this has not resulted in an accident but a concern. has occurred on several occasions since taken ownership in september. *tr
My 2010 prius is only 2 months old & when applying the brakes, at times, it feels like i have been hit in the back by another vehicle and the entire car jumps forward before coming to a full stop. some what like an engine surge or that the brakes have not applied properly. i have reported this to my toyota service department & they have suggested that maybe it is due to the gas engine turning on or off at that exact moment. i find this to be very dangerous as there is a definite surge forward before the car stops. it has happened on different road surfaces, smooth, uneven & bumpy when both wet & dry. they did not find any solution to this problem & told me to continue to monitor it. they also advised that no recall has been issued or other complaints received. *tr
February 5, 2010 office of defects investigation national highway & traffic safety administration washington dc re: on-line customer complaint toyota prius 2010 dear madam or sir: my husband and i purchased a prius 2010 in september 2009. in november 2009, i experienced a sudden jolting forward of my new car as i pulled into my driveway. shortly thereafter, as i was driving on a major commercial thruway in my area (route 10), i experienced a similar unexpected acceleration while i was stopping at an intersection light (although milder). i was concerned and alarmed by the problem and called toyota morristown, new jersey (the car dealer where we bought the car) to report the problem. i was told the problem was not serious and that i did not need to be concerned about it.. while i did not really believe the dealer's story, it did not happen again so i did not pursue the matter. after today's article in the new york times, i now see that a number of prius 2010 owners are having the same problem and i want to let you know i experienced it as well. toyota needs to fix this safety issue as soon as possible without extensive investigations and delays. thank you for protecting the public's interest in this regard. *tr
I have a 2010 prius and have had trouble with brakes since i bought it. dealer has been contacted three times and letter to toyota with no response. the brakes are not right and i am afraid i will be in an accident. *cn
Momentary brake failure. *tr
Before the news about the 2010 prius brake problem became national, i had experienced several instances with my 2010 prius (purchased nov., 2009) during which i would brake at low speed over bumps or rough roads and experience a sliding or brakes-not-working sensation. this continues to happen with this car. i have only experienced it at very low speeds. *tr
Since purchasing my 2010 prius in october 2009 i have noticed a brief pulsating sensation when applying the brakes over bumping surfaces. the brakes appear not to work for that brief moment when applying the brakes.*tr
