Problems with 2010 Toyota Prius SERVICE BRAKES, ELECTRIC

On average, the 2010 Toyota Prius starts to “feel” problems with the SERVICE BRAKES, ELECTRIC and its various aspects after 4 167 miles.

Recently reported SERVICE BRAKES, ELECTRIC problems on 2010 Toyota Prius

I just picked up my 2010 toyota prius from the dealership for the second time since the brake recall. this is the third time my prius has been in for service on my brakes. they performed the recall and keep telling me that my car is functioning properly and that all hybrids brake this way. i will admit my prius stops quicker than before than the recall however i still notice that it surges forward before the care stops at times. in the 2 weeks i had the car back after they performed the recall i and my husband noticed that the brakes still surged forward before stopping. i picked up my car today and i noticed it again on my way home. what is it going to take to get this car fixed properly? i do not feel safe driving it around, and i have young children. i want someone to look into why these recalls are making the problem alittle better but not fixing the problem. if toyota does not know how to fix it then maybe they need to buy these unreliable death traps back from their consumers and stop feeding us a line about how this is normal and all hybrids do this. *tr

Purchased 2010 prius on aug ll,09. have returned to dealer 5 times, beginning on sept.29, 09, to report same problem...which is that at random times when i shift from "p" to either "d" or "r", the vehicle lunges and when i apply the brake, it is like hitting a brick wall. this process is repeated several times in sequence...lunge, brake, lunge, brake..then it corrects itself and drives normally. i cannot predict when this will occur, sometimes it is weeks and hundreds of miles between occurrences; sometimes only a few miles and hours between incidents. the dealer always says they have not been able to reproduce the problem, therefore no diagnosis or repair. i have reported to toyota customer ser. and was assigned a case #. have had ongoing conversation with tcs rep to report this and several other problems, i.e. various warning lights at inappropriate times..."key detected in vehicle" while driving down the road... etc. am always told "scan shows no problems". i think there is a problem with electronics. unsafe, frightening. latest incident on 3/05/10. dealer installed software fix for brake recall on 2/10/10. at times must repeatedly move gear shift lever before it responds. *tr

I have a 2010 prius which i took to champion toyota in houston for the recall repair on february 12. according to them they performed the brake recall software repair. however, on 3/3 when i was driving home from work i experienced the brake failure problem again. *tr

Toyota prius 2010 abs software update does not fix the issue - abs turns off and vehicle accelerates when braking and i hit a bump - software update was performed on 2/12/2010. *tr

When braking, all of a sudden the car lurches for a second or so, as if on ice. this happened 3 times in different circumstances, once not related to a pothole. toyota dealer in avon ct applied the correction to the software, and the next week (last week) the same thing happened again, when i hit a wide, but not deep pothole while braking, just before stopping at the end of a highway exit ramp. in this situation, it was fortunate that no car was in front of me at the light. additionally i had a problem with sudden acceleration a couple times when driving at slow speed. *tr

I took my 2010 toyota prius into the dealer to fix the braking problem; however, i am still experiencing the problem on a daily basis. i called the dealership, and they were uncertain as how to help. i'm very concerned that i will crash into someone or go through an intersection because of the release of the brake. *tr

1. on friday, february 26th, 2010 i had my 2010 prius "fixed" at a toyota dealership for the brake/acceleration recall. i had experienced braking/acceleration issues only 3 times in 5 months of owning the vehicle before having it recalled. 2. in the last 2 days i have experienced the braking/acceleration problem twice. the problem seems to have gotten worse. essentially what occurs is a sudden jerking forward of the car, whether or not the braking system is depressed, typically when going over rough terrain or uneven pavement. i occurred both times at relatively low speeds between 10-20 miles an hour and the acceleration lasted only a second or 2, but is very alarming, especially if a car is in front of you. *tr

Brake problem with 2010 prius. i was crossing a pothole on street and put the brake on before the front wheels get into there. while the front wheels enter the hole, i felt my car suddenly lost braking and speed up. it lasted for less than 1 sec. i guess. then, everything was normal. *tr

1. brakes disengaged on two separate occasions while braking to a red light and went over uneven pavement. 2. car is parked in garage. in the morning i went to start the car and upon pushing the start button the car started violating shaking and making a clanking noise. i immediately turned car off as this was not a normal occurrence. i pushed the start button again and car started normally. 3. on 4/1/10 took car to toyota of orange for recall fix of the brakes. on 4/2 while pulling up to a street from a parking lot the brakes disengaged. the asphalt was very bumpy in the parking lot. i was on a slight decline. the brakes disengaged and car lurched forward. it was worse than the other two times. it was scary. if there was a car in front of me i would have hit them. *tr

Driving 2010 toyota prius. seemed to have 'skipped' forward while gentle braking over bumpy road (small bumps). car had allegedly had electric repair to abs for the prius, however; will take to another dealer to confirm. i realize there are privacy concerns as an owner, and i'm not looking to put emphasis on myself, however; after supposed repairs to the brake system i am worried that the electronic update to the prius 2010 was not sufficient. the slight 'jolt' that i felt made me think initially i was bumped in the back of my car. thanks again for investigating this. *tr

I own a 2010 toyota prius and have had my car in for service to address the brake recall. however, today i drove over a pothole and the symptom of the recall (loss of braking power) occurred. this has happened one other time in the past few days since i have brought my car in for the recall service. the service appears not to have addressed the problem. *tr

Braking issues in my 2010 toyota prius- after "recall fix". *tr

I experience the brake failure on prius 2010, i took the car in the dealer to fix it but dealer told me that the firmware already up to date on my car. *tr

I bought a 2010 prius in november of 2009. i soon discovered that the car would not brake properly and a couple of months later heard about this issue on the news. i brought my car in for the recall and a software patch was applied to the car to rectify the situation. that was 5 days ago. upon leaving the dealership, the car did feel better; the brakes did not feel as sensitive. however, in the past five days i have experienced the same exact sensation of the car not braking when i have been riding over a rough patch of road at a speed of less than 30 mph. but it's not just a feeling. the car surges forward momentarily. it almost feels like i am skidding on ice. i do not feel safe in this vehicle despite the fact that the folks at my toyota dealership said this problem was "not a safety issue." i disagree. i am afraid that i will lose braking ability and hit something or someone or end up in an intersection involuntarily. i have a five year old daughter. i really want my money back. i would never have purchased this car if i had known it had faulty brakes. i feel burned by toyota. *tr

We bought a 2010 prius last july. since buying the prius we have had the brakes completely stop working, during braking after driving over a small bumps (manhole cover, disturbed pavement, small pothole). this has now happened around 10 times. fortunately, after completely releasing the brakes would again brake after applying increased pressure on the brake pedal. most recently the braking failure occurred the day immediately following having the 'brake recall" maintenance performed by toyota to correct the braking problem. the "fix" is obviously not correcting the problem. this is a major safety concern. the brakes once gave out while approaching a pedestrian in a crosswalk. it is only a matter of time before someone is seriously injured or worse. please help. what should i do now? *tr

When i am driving my toyota prius 2010 and the vehicle goes over a bump or hole in the road the vehicle "jumps" especially is i am braking to slow the vehicle down. *tr

Driving my 2010 prius towards a traffic light. light turns from orange to red and i brake in plenty of time. small pothole just as i stop makes the car's brake "slip" and i shoot forward several feet. i now understand what the braking problem is people have been talking about. *tr

2010 toyota prius: had the car for several months and really enjoy driving it...okay, i like the mileage, it's not a corvette though. have noticed on rough pavement and potholes that the brakes do seem to give a little. however on 19 feb 10 i hit the brakes to stop and it felt like the simply made a grinding sound and barely slowed at all...the harder i pressed the less the seemed to apply. these cars are dangerous and should be removed from the roads until toyota fixes this and proves the problem is corrected...i will not drive it until they do so... *tr

I have been experience momentary loss of braking power while driving my 2010 prius on rough road surface or potholes more than 30 times since i own this vehicle. i filed a complaint (odi #10304434) back in feb 3rd. 2010 before the recall from toyota. my prius was included in the recall, so i brought the vehicle back to toyota service center for the recall. toyota updated the abs ecu software on my prius on feb. 2010. since toyota updated the software for the recall, i still experience the same problem multiple times, and it is not only happen during slow and steady application of brakes, also happen when i use the brake in more sudden fashion even at moderate speed (30-40mph). i brought my prius back to the toyota service center again in may 2010 to recheck the abs ecu software, and they said the software is the latest updated version, and my braking system is meeting the manufacture specification. however, this problem is still exist as of today, and my concern regarding safety of this vehicle is growing because this problem lead to increase vehicle stopping distance and thus raise the likelihood of a crash or accident. *tr

I have a 2010 prius, and when i apply the brakes at any intensity and my vehicle hits a defect in the road surface, the abs system seems to release brake pressure to all 4 wheels completely for about half a second. this makes me question the effectiveness of the brakes in an emergency situation, especially on houston's notoriously neglected roadways. i was told that this was normal by both toyota motor co. at 1-800-331-4331 and also by the dealer. tmc informed me that this is the way that the abs system was designed. please launch an inquisition and/or investigation into this matter, for the safety of the owners of all toyota prius vehicles. *tr

I was bringing my 2010 prius to a stop at a stopsign on e bound mlk drive in san francisco's golden gate park the eve of 2/15/10. the pavement was bumpy, and the brakes "skipped" for a half-second. i was able to bring the car to a safe and complete stop without hazard, except for a momentary jump in my heart rate. *tr

Hit a pot hole while using brakes and car lunged forward. *tr

Braking for upcoming traffic light and when went over a rough spot in road, brakes temporarily failed. *tr

My 2010 prius has experienced the braking issue when going over a bump or a pothole. *tr

2010 toyota prius gave me in two different occasions the feeling that the brake was not working. in both cases i was driving slow and traction control light came on. in one case i was backing up from my garage; in the other case i was transitioning from a small downhill exit to a flat street. *tr

While applying moderate pressure to the brakes on my 2010 prius and while driving over a bumpy road, the brakes seem to momentarily, but completely fail. then the car seems to briefly accelerate (or at least free-wheel) before the brakes feel like they're starting engage and work again. this has happened with this new car since the day i purchased it in july of 2009. it does it every single day, as i drive over the speed bump while driving out of the parking garage near my work. *tr

I have a 2010 toyota prius. i noticed that when heading downhill on a road with many bumps, payment irregularities, etc. that the braking would total fail for about 1/2 a second. i was always careful on this type of road to reduce speed earlier to compensate. i had the recall reprogramming performed on 2/12/2010. *tr

2010 prius brake problem experienced sunday, february 7, 2010. i was turning right into a driveway from a busy street and applied my brakes as i was entering the upward slanted driveway when braking disappeared and i surged forward about one to two seconds before applying the brakes a second time and regaining braking capability. it's the only time this has happened to me since buying the prius last november, but because of the uncertainty i read today about whether toyota would issue a recall in the u.s. after doing so in japan for the same cars, i thought it would be worthwhile to submit this to you. *tr

I own a 2010 toyota prius which i purchased in august 2009. when i drive down a bumpy hill near my home, the brakes temporarily fail to hold if i am braking while going over the bumps themselves. it feels like the car it taking off after each bump. i believe i am experiencing the same problem as other prius owners are. thank you for you attention to this matter. *tw

Driving a 2010 prius coming to a stoplight. went over a raised portion of road resulting in a very noticeable bump. car seemed to lurch forward and braking didn't seem to work for a short time. thought i was going to go through the red light into cross traffic but brakes took hold and i was able to stop.

I suffered a temporary loss of braking while approaching a toll booth on the new jersey garden state parkway. the loss occured immediately after hitting a large bump as i was slowing to pay the toll. soon after braking returned and i was able to continue slowing and did not strike anything. *cn

While driving eastbound on moorpark street, approaching dixie canyon avenue, i braked in preparation to make a right hand turn, and the brakes released when i hit a small pot hole. the brakes re-engaged approximately 1-2 seconds later. *cn

When applying the brakes over a bumpy or metallic surface, there is a uncomfortable delay until the brakes "kick in". this has been going on for some time.

This is the second time my car has hit a pothole in the road and the brakes stopped working. the first time i thought it was just me, but the second time i realized it was really happening and scary. i was headed southbound on rowena blvd in los angeles, was starting my deceleration when i hit this pot hole on the right side of the road. for about 2 seconds my car stopped decelerating and i could feel no power on the brake pads, then suddenly the brake power returned. *tw

While traveling over a speed bump and applying brakes, brakes malfunction for a period of time. while traveling to car dealership and coming to a stop to make a turn, the road was uneven, and the brakes again did not function immediately. on both occasions, no cars were directly in front of may car. *cn

While braking, right front wheel hit a small pothole and brakes disengaged for a split second. *cn updated 9/29/11*cw

My 2010 toyota prius accelerates suddenly coming to a stop and going over a bump. it has happened several times since i bought the car last july (twice today). also, it handles terribly in the snow, skidding through turns and when braking. i have been driving in the snow for 30 years and have never had a car that handles so poorly. *tr

Toyota prius 2010 braking problem turning left in to parking structure or on to highway ramp. sudden surge and loss of braking for a few moments. always able to control car. *tr

Toyota prius 2010 model - bought july 2009 - periodically (taken place over a period of 6 months or so) when pressing the brake pedal, there is a short period of time when it is apparent that no braking action is taking place and than all of a sudden you can tell that the braking action has taken place. it is scary when this takes place. i do have an appointment with the dealer this coming week. *tr

Momentary brake loss. 2010 prius, mfg. date 12/09. purchase date 2/1/10. low speed slowing down with light braking for stop light. happened over a man hole cover (i think). when it felt like the brakes quite momentarly. *cn

I own a 2010 toyota prius. when i approach a pothole or rough patch in the road and apply the brakes as i am driving over it, the brakes slip and the car lurches forward. this has occurred six times since i purchased the vehicle in september of 2009. i took the car to toyota of santa monica on february 5,2010. they ran a diagnostic test and concluded that nothing was faulty within the braking system. this is the same day every news organization in the world was reporting that toyota admitted there is a software problem in the abs braking system and was repaired on 2010 prius models built from january 2010. *cn

Toyota prius 2010 purchased july 2009. this vehicle has the braking problem which is described in the media. the brake "intermittent release" on uneven road surface is repeatable and has been symptomatic since new. *tr

My 2010 prius stops braking or accelerates when hitting a pothole or bump causing the car to stop later than anticipated. almost hit a person in the cross walk. *cn

Temporary brake failure when braking over potholes or braking in a turn *cn

I own a 2010 toyota prius and frequently (~1 x week) experience a braking problem as being reported by the media. if, while i am braking, the car goes over a bump, pot-hole, or wavy pavement, the car feels like it isn't braking, as if the wheel is off the ground or sliding on ice. it only occurs while the car is being bumped, so usually it is only lasts a matter of a few feet. i hope this helps you identify the problem and determine a course of action. *cn

Brake failure on 2010 prius in snowy conditions. i was driving with my 11 year old daughter going less than 10 miles per hour approaching a busy intersection. the brakes would not engage and i could not stop before entering the intersection. i was almost hit by a bus. the bus saw me and sped up thus avoiding a tragedy. also, the other oncoming traffic was able to stop and avoid me. my daughter and i were very fortunate. i am horrified and want this corrected. *tr

At 15 mph and braking, brakes disengage for less than one second after hitting a road imperfection (an old metal and rubber sensor placed about 10 or 15 feet from crosswalk) that is perpendicular to driving direction. at 35 mph, brakes disengage when braking and crossing a bridge/overpass connector plate. *tr

As i braked to make a right turn at an intersection, my two week old 2010 toyota prius stopped braking when i hit a section of the roadbed that had some winter damage to it and the car's anti-lock brakes attempted to cut in. it felt like the car surged forward, but i understand it was just a sudden loss of braking as the transfer between the different braking mechanisms occurred. since i was turning onto a highway service road during rush hour, i felt the delay was a danger to me and the occupants of my vehicle.

I was approaching a traffic signal, hit a small pot hole, and applied the brakes on my 2010 toyota prius. the pedal went all the way to the floor and the car did not slow. i released the pedal and stepped on it a second time and this time the brakes worked. *tr

Bought 2010 toyota prius in nov 2009. over 20 times since i bought the car, i have experienced split-second loss in braking power with my hybrid car when driving over bumpy or slippery roads. this happened again yesterday. anxiously await a recall / repair. *tr
