Problems with 2010 Toyota Prius SERVICE BRAKES

On average, the 2010 Toyota Prius starts to “feel” problems with the SERVICE BRAKES and its various aspects after 89 666 miles.

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 toyota prius. the contact stated that when he applied the brakes while driving 30 mph he heard a harsh abnormal sound. the noise was heard one thousand times. the vehicle was taken to a dealer, who diagnosed that the brake boosters needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 50.

When i go over a patched in the roadway and apply my brakes my car feels like it skips.momentarily.. veh.icle was in motion.

While i was braking to stop at the red light, the car accelerated. i moved the steering wheel to hit the curb to prevent crossing the red light. it happened to me couple of times. then i realize it happens only when i am driving over uneven surface or over bumps. it is really scary. i almost hit a car seattle downtown going down the hit because my car accelerated instead of stopping. i took it the car dealer but they said there is no problem. i am afraid that i might get in a big accident. *tr

We have experienced inconsistent break feel after abs actuation during slow and steady application of the brakes on rough or slick road surfaces. we noticed also that there was a recall on this issue in 2010 but our particular car (by vin number) did not qualify. we think that the recall should have included a broader sample of same year and model. we have brought the problem to the attention of the dealership several times but they have dismissed it as normal operation of brakes. we feel very unsafe in the vehicle.

When i encounter a bump while applying the brakes in my 2010 toyota prius, the brakes fully disengage momentarily. this causes the car to jolt forward unexpectedly. my foot is not coming off the brake at all when this happens, so i know i am not the cause of it. i received a recall notice by mail in february 2010 to address just this issue. i took the car to the nearest toyota dealership to have the recall work completed. it was intended to fix the malfunction in the anti-lock brake system that caused the brakes to disengage when the car hits a bump. the recall work was completed, but the problem was not resolved. the brakes still do the exact same thing and fully disengage when i hit a bump while braking. this is unquestionably dangerous and a serious safety hazard. *tr

This has occurred on multiple incidents. this car does not stop properly on rough roads. when hitting a pothole, bump, manhole cover, rough road while applying the brakes, instead of stopping, the car surges forwards approximately 5-10 feet as though there were no brakes. eventually, the brakes work and the car stops. but it can be really scary. i have taken it to toyota several times, but they cannot "replicate the incident." basically, i think they drive it around the block and it doesn't happen. it is always worse with the summer tires vs the studded winter tires. they say it has to do with the regen brakes switching to the anti-locks, but i regularly drive rental cars with anti-locks for work in other cities, and i know what anti-locks feel like. i have never felt the "chatter" one feels when the anti-locks kick on. i do not believe the anti-locks work properly on this car. on may 3, 2012, i had to replace the right rear brake (rotor, plate, pads) due to unexpected corrosion. my car had ~17-18,000 miles on it and was only 1.5 years old! i have never had to do this on any other car. now at 27, 000 miles, mendenhall toyota says i need to replace the rear brakes again . i just replaced the front brake pads last week. but there is a nasty squeal that i reported to them last week and they did nothing. either they are ripping me off or the brakes on these cars are defective and dangerous. please do something. toyota refuses to listen. *js

This brake problems has occurred many times. during application of the brakes at low speeds on rough road surfaces the car suddenly loses braking power for a brief time then starts to work again if the brake pedal remains depressed. this has almost caused accidents a number of times and is quite frightening. the car was brought in for the recall and safercar.gov states that there are no open recalls. when we bring this to the attention of the toyota dealer we are told this problem is "normal" and there is nothing more they can do. (however, i understand that they fixed it in the next model year.) in my opinion this is an unsafe condition and it has been complained about online by other prius owners. i ask the nhtsa to require toyota to fix this in the name of safety. *tr

Please let me state that i am extremely happy with the dealership that i bought the car from. all services from oil changes to repairs have done by this dealer only. but ever since i purchased this vehicle, i have been constantly complaining about a strange braking issue. when i am traveling 25 mph or above and hit any kind of imperfection in the road ( ie. railroad track, dip, pothole, manhole cover etc.) my brakes disengage for a split second. i will still have my foot on the brake and go over imperfection and for a brief second the car surges forward rapidly and then the brake engages again. i have complained about this more than 3 times. all three times the dealer says that they can not repeat this issue. i now have 70,000 miles on the car and this is still happening. although i am the primary user of this vehicle, my wife refuses to drive the car calling it unsafe. today 3.25.2014 i have dropped off the car at the dealer for a recall and i have mentioned the problem again, my service adviser is now telling me that this recall (software update for motor generator ecu and power management ecu) should take care of the problem.) he explained that they are updating the software brake stop technology. the above recall letter explains the condition that is being remedied and does not translated to the conditions that i am complaining about. please help me with this serious issue. *tr

Back in 2010, we noticed that, when braking, the car would lurch forward. this happened several times at random. at that time, we took the car in to fix the problem. victory toyota in canton, michigan, told us that there was nothing wrong; their diagnosis and computers showed that no errors had occurred. we drove it for a short time, and it continued to have the issue. we took it back in to the dealership, they again said that there was nothing wrong. they said that they took it for a test drive, and nothing happened. we were made to think that the issue was in our heads, so we took the car back and tried to deal with the issue, even though it continued over the years. finally, this year, we nearly got into two separate accidents as a direct result of this sudden lurching forward. i took the car back into the service department of victory toyota, and was told bluntly that there was never a recall for this issue, that, unless i could recreate the problem with a technician in the car, i was making things up. that is what lead to this complaint. i did some research and found that the car had indeed been recalled for this brake issue with recall id # 68066. so they lied about the recall history for my car. also, recreating something that happens at random during a finite time period, such as a test drive, is improbable, and to make servicing the car contingent on that test drive is ludicrous. i am hoping that, by lodging this complaint something will get done before my wife, me, or/and someone else is/are killed because of this issue. *tr

Continual braking problems with my car. at low speeds applying the brakes on a slippery or bumpy surface, there is a complete lack of braking for a very short period of time. the car seems to accelerate. this was supposedly fixed by a toyota recall. (ssc aob) which i had performed. still have the problem. i have complained many times to different toyota service departments. the answer is always they cannot duplicate the problem. (this last time they told me that, and they didn't even road test it.) have complained to toyota corporate 5/26/2010, file #[xxx]. they called me back, on 6/7/2010, still no fix yet, will contact me when a fix is available. i usually drive this car, my wife drove it today, and it happened to her. scared her to death, does not want to drive the car anymore. help! information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

When braking, if a pothole or bump in the road is hit, the car seemingly jerks forward/accelerates for a split second. this happens on almost a daily basis and has been experienced by all drivers of the car. *tr

I own a 2010 prius, when the brakes are applied, the brake pedal is even with the accelerator pedal. i find this a dangerous situation. if i were to apply the brakes suddenly, my foot could possibly hit the accelerator pedal and the brake pedal at the same time possibly causing an accident! i complained to the toyota dealer, and was told the brake pedal is lower on the prius then conventional vehicles.i was always taught that the brake pedal should never be at the same height or below the accelerator pedal for safety reasons. toyota appears to ignore this safety issue. haven't auto mfg. learned anything with gm ignition problem? when is the government going to do something about these auto design defects? are they always going to wait for people to get into accidents and possibly get killed before they act? *js

Brake pedal loses pressure while braking over bumps in road. pressure returns after bumps are passed. recall issued and software fix provided by dealer in march 2010. software fix didn't help. similar condition has persisted since then. bought vehicle new. mileage and date when first noticed condition are estimates. after software fix, noticed condition again immediately. *tr

As many previous owners described, i am also having problems with the brakes at low speed since the beginning of owning this vehicle (october 2009). dealer couldn't replicate the problem. although the car went through the recall for the break system is still having the same issue ever since. the other issue with the brakes happens after rain. it makes a screeching noise without performance being effected. it goes away usually within a half an hour. this has been an ongoing thing too for few years by now. the other issue i had as well as others is dimming of lights that has been occurring since last year. we needed to switch the lightbulbs more frequently than seems normal. didn't even think it was out of the ordinary until i read the comments here about it. the other problem i started to have is with a stereo display system and the voice activation for the bluetooth. the display had some weird lines on it after a very cold or a very hot day (radio was working fine just the display was not working properly). eventually goes back to normal but this started happening the last year or so. the same time also had a problem with the voice activation unit which turned on unexpectedly and turned back on in 10 seconds after each time i turned it off. this was happening for a good 30 min at that time. this only occurred twice but both times was after a hot day last summer. this year so far haven't happened yet.

I read the complaints & found one listed recently dated 5/22/15 that describes the exact problem i have. my prius is a 2010 purchased in 7/09 & shortly thereafter, i noticed the braking issue. the following info in quotes is copied from the other complaint which is the same issue i have - (other complaint stated) "when you are at lower speeds and hit a pothole or big bump while breaking, there's a sudden 'jolt' and it feels as if the breaks have been completely released momentarily. it almost feels as if the car lurches forward. i feel it heightens the chance of a crash due to increased deceleration time." it sometimes feels like you are sliding on ice & have no control over the car. (and it is scary when it happens!) i had toyota check my vehicle a few times, but they were not able to duplicate the problem, so nothing was fixed. i thought it was just my car this was happening to. now i find that i am not alone in this. the complaint i referenced stated that there was and a "previous investigation & partial recall but it didn't affect all of the 2010 production vehicles, just a portion." i never heard about any recall or investigation on this. i agree with the other complaint that "this needs to be re-investigated as my car and countless other cars (both involved and not involved in the last recall) are (still) malfunctioning when it comes to the breaking system at slower speeds when on rough roads / encountering potholes / bumps." my car still has this problem even as it is now 5 years old. what needs to be done to correct this issue?

Sometimes after starting the car, brakes will only response to hard braking. cannot brake to slow down gradually. brakes will not respond at all when lightly pressing down on brake pedal. only after driving about 1 mile will normal braking functionality return. this has been an issue ever since i first bought my car new.

The abs system on my 2010 prius seems to release the brake when applied on rough surfaces going downhill which gives a sense of acceleration and lack of vehicle control. the same effect occurs when driving on some level surfaces. i have recently read dozens of accounts about the prius brakes acting this way as far back as 2006 models. i'm am now concerned about the brake system integrity when i drive and feel strongly that the nhtsa should initiate an in depth investigation into this situation. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 toyota prius. the contact stated that the brake delayed to engage while decelerating. the contact was able to steer the steering wheel away and avoid crashing into another vehicle. the vehicle was taken to the dealer several times for the failure and a diagnostic was performed, which indicated that the computer system needed to be reset. the computer system was reset but the failure was not corrected. the vehicle was also test driven, but the failure did not duplicate. the vehicle was not repaired. the vin was not available. the failure mileage was 2,000 and the current mileage was 35,000.
