Problems with 2010 Toyota Prius SERVICE BRAKES

On average, the 2010 Toyota Prius starts to “feel” problems with the SERVICE BRAKES and its various aspects after 89 666 miles.

Recently reported SERVICE BRAKES problems on 2010 Toyota Prius

Abs, brake and traction control lights on. code c1391 abnormal leak in accumulator.

Abs light on / traction light on / brake light on !!!!!!!! code c1391abnormal leak in accunulator !!!!!!! $3,000 estimate fix !!!!!!!!!!! comon toyota proble!!!!!!!! recall!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Warning lights : abs , brake , and anti-skid come on and stay one. brake pedal is spongy and unresponsive. the error code reads out p1241 & c1391 which indicate brake booster pump failure. abs brakes have failed.

C1391 - abs system failed

Brake system has kept making air pushing sound but suddenly i cannot push the brake pedal at all. it feel like blocked. braking force is not working

Serious issue with the prius. brake actuator/brake booster fail. the braking is seriously compromised because of this problem. the dealership says it is known to toyota, but they will not offer any assistance. when the brake/abs/trac lights are reset the brakes function perfectly for a short period of time and then the lights/problem returns.

Brake actuator has failed. traction control, abs, brake lights illuminated on dash. more effort needed to engage brakes. this affects the regenerative braking as it no longer charges on braking as it was designed. checked toyota website for recalls since this is safety related, and there are none. which is quite disturbing. i've researched prius forums and this seems to be an ongoing problem. toyota issued a recall for the generation 2 model, however this seems to be a problem for generation 3 models as well. the problem did occur when on the highway traveling at 60 mph.

The other day my brake light, traction, and abs light came on. took it to the mechanic and they said it's code c1391 - abnormal leak in the accumilator, electrical issue, and i must go to the dealer. i've seen others complain about this. shouldn't this be a recall?

Abs and brake lights "turned on" on the dashboard while driving along freeway. had to push the brake pedal harder to stop the car. search online on what might be causing the warning lights, it was found out that so many toyota prius car owners were having the same issue. the symptom was caused by either faulty accumulator or master cylinder/actuator.

The traction light, the abs light and the brake light appear on the dash. i have already paid the mechanic approximatly $1,500 for repairs and now i am told i need the abs brake booster which costs an additional $2,546.26. this part has been recalled on other 2010 toyota prius models, but not mine. i cannot afford this fix, so i am driving my car as it is. brake pedal acts differently each time i use the brakes.

Antilock brake actuator and pump failure. quoted as a $4700 repair at dealer with labor. parts are just over $3600. there were recalls on gen 2 prius'and extended warranty on other prius' . this car falls under no help at all. we are original owners and car had been essentially problem free. disgusted that this dangerous and known problem isn't being properly addressed by toyota. all lights on dash related to brakes lit up while driving. still had brakes. took to dealer to check problem.

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 toyota prius. while driving various speeds, depressing the brake pedal to come to a stop, or when driving over a bump, the vehicle failed to stop. the contact stated that the vehicle stopped after a distance, but not when prompted. all the warning indicators illuminated on the instrument panel. the vehicle was taken to gullo toyota of conroe (45 s, conroe, tx 77304 ,(888) 483-0321) where it was diagnosed that the brake actuator assembly failed and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired due to the repair fees. the manufacturer informed the contact that the vin was not included in a recall and did not offer further assistance. the approximate failure mileage was 147,000.

Vsc, brake, and abs lights are on symptoms: cruise control will bump up the speed then "cancel" cruise control the ability to "set" cruise is rejected vsc, brake, abs lights turn on no regen braking brakes need way more effort to slow/stop abrupt braking will cause a skid any help will be appreciated.

My wife had a 'near-death' experience on 22-mar-18 while driving her prius (2010) back home. she was driving on a high speed interstate freeway (i-10) in houston and suddenly her abs brake system failed and she can she all warning lights in the dashboard (abs warning light, brake system warning light, slip indicator) were lit. as soon as she saw these warning, she tried to slow down the vehicle safely by applying brakes, but brakes were barely responsive. at this time, she was driving at a speed around 65 mph. she kept pressing the brake pedals and slowly moved towards the shoulder area. after traveling for some distance, the vehicle stopped eventually. she called tow truck and took the car to toyota dealership nearby. we are waiting for the response from the toyota service center about the fault.

As my wife was driving the brakes failed; the pedals went to the floor. she had to swerve to avoid hitting someone. she continue to press the pedals and the car eventually stopped. when i got to her i turned the car back on and tested the brakes. this time the pedals would barely go down and would only stop the vehicles if you went 5 to 10 mph. it rendered the car unusable. i found online that there was recall for 2010 toyota prius's but toyota said my vin wasn't listed in the recall for an actuator.

While driving on highway at approximately 50mph, instrument cluster displayed brake, abs, (!), and tcs. as i attempted to slow down, brakes lost effectiveness and became mushy. i had to press on brake pedal extra hard to slow the car down and bring to car to a stop. pedal travel and force required was way more then normal.

My emergency brake has failed. i park on a hil and my car almost went down without me in it , i was getting something out of the back seat when the eb failed, luckily the drivers door was open and i was able to jump in and brake with the normal brakes. also while braking and going over a bump my brakes fail for a second.

A tire blew out on the highway, and afterwards the abs light, brake light, and traction light came on. apparently the brake acuator has failed completely.

I own a 2010 toyota prius iv. i concur with all that has been documented about abs and braking issues with the prius. two weeks ago my brakes started to sqeal. i took it to a mechanic and was informed all was well (brake pads, fluids, oil). a week later the brake and abs indicator came on in my vehicle. the braking distance is elongated as i have to pressed firmly on the brake for the car to stop. i took it to my mechanic who reset the car. i drove from the mechanic and all appeared to be fine until i hit a bump in the road. the indicators came back on immediately and the braking changed. i had to pressed the brake pedal all the way down in order for the car to start. the car always surges forward whenever i hit a pothole, bump or any rough surface. in hin sight, when i first bought the car i had a fender bender because the car lurched forward when i was parking. i am now discovering this issue is a knwon issued with toyota; particularly the prius. fixing this problem seems to be expensive. toyota should cover the cost via a recall.

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 toyota prius. while the brake pedal was depressed, the vehicle delayed to stop and the brake warning indicator illuminated. the vehicle was taken to sheehy toyota of fredericksburg (3507 jefferson davis hwy, fredericksburg, va 22408, (540) 507-0076) and was informed that the vehicle was not included in a recall. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the contact referenced nhtsa campaign number: 13v235000 (service brakes). the manufacturer was notified and the contact was advised to contact the dealer. the failure mileage was approximately 250,000. *tt

Copied the below from another complaint because this guy is having the exact same issue i am having, i bought the car aug 2017 right before the period to get it replaced expired, was never notified in any way of this warranty change so how am i supposed to know i have a defective part on my car.. but the dealership still sold it to me, now a month after the eligibility to get it repaired expires, my brakes die and toyota says they wont help nor is the dealership responsible for selling me the car without checking if the recalled part was replaced. they also keep mentioning the extended warranty on the actuator is only for "certain vin's". so they are gonna extend the warranty on certain 2010 prius' but not all of them.. this makes no sense.. please help my 2010 prius is having issues as same as the safety recall back in 2013 ( 13v-235 ). the abs light, vsc light, and brake light were on after a bumpy rooad in my neighborhood. i brought it to the dealer and they indicated that there was a leak in the accumulator. after reset the system, all the lights went off but i still feel the losses of pressure on the brake pedal. however, my car has 0 open recall and the dealer quoted me over 5k for the repair which is ridiculous compare to the value of the car.

When i press brake on the bumped road, the car function weird and seems like it has sudden "shock" so it is kind of losing control for the car even i didn't press brake that hard, it happens several times already during the course of 7 years that i owned this car, even when car is new. i was so scared and nervous, i don't know where to report this problem and did mentioned to dealer before. the problem is random and unpredictable and i don't know when it will happen. but i guess i am kind of cautious on when i press pedal when i drive. this is mostly happen in local drive, not highway. in driving when driving forward, maybe there is something on the road, but it should not be doing this as it is very scary and it's like a sudden "jerky". my name is [xxx] it happened at least 10 times during the past 7 years to me. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

Abs light stays on, i have no brakes when emergency braking, there was a toyota prius recall on brake master cylinder and booster pump but toyota said it was not for my vehicle. my problem is exactly the same problem as other prius brake recalls but toyota will not cover it. less then 65,000 miles on the car . how can a master cyl be bad by now, they usually last over 100,000 miles. very unsafe , and may kill someone. this should be covered by toyota with all the other brake recall problems with this year and model. i had to slam on my brakes but my car would not stop causing me to run into a wall at the baltimore harbor tunnel. this is a recall and letters were sent out by toyota about this faulty braking but now toyota will not honor the recall

My car need to replace the brake pump assembly which is same as one of their past recall in 2013. i called toyota and they said my car's was not in the range so they don't cover it. yea, certain vins but it is clearly that all the 2010 prius have this issue.

My 2010 prius is having issues as same as the safety recall back in 2013 ( 13v-235 ). the abs light, vsc light, and brake light were on after a bumpy rooad in my neighborhood. i brought it to the dealer and they indicated that there was a leak in the accumulator. after reset the system, all the lights went off but i still feel the losses of pressure on the brake pedal. however, my car has 0 open recall and the dealer quoted me over 5k for the repair which is ridiculous compare to the value of the car.

Approaching a stop the brake pedal in the prius will suddenly lose resistance and will need to be pushed to the floor where the brakes will finally engage and the auto will come to a hard stop. this happens randomly and is difficult for a mechanic to duplicate. i took the vehicle to a trusted mechanic (not the toyota dealership) and he confirmed it is an hydraulic problem and that pads/drums/etc. are ok. a recall was issued for 2010 prius's describing this exact situation but my vin number was not included in this recall. recall details the brake booster pump contains a compartment filled with nitrogen gas. this nitrogen gas can leak into the brake fluid causing reduced hydraulic pressure during application of the brakes. reduced braking efficiency can increase the risk of a crash. dealers will replace the brake booster pump assembly as necessary to correct this concern. our quick take reduced braking performance may be experienced due to a brake booster system issue. what should you do? toyota will begin notifying owners of the affected vehicles during july, 2013. if you notice problems with the braking system, or you don't receive notification and you feel you should have, please contact your dealer for further instruction. they may ask for your vehicle identification number (vin), so please have it handy when you call. on jan 16, 2018 i called my local toyota service department and was told nothing could be done as i have no outstanding recalls on the vehicle. i then called toyota on jan 17 and they told me much the same and opened a case number for the issue. this issue seems to be covered on nhtsa number 13v235000. i am requesting nhtsa advice as to how to proceed.

Brake lights came on while driving on freeway. power brakes seemed to fail and a large amount of pressure was required to stop vehicle. toyota of fort worth dealership diagnosed that the actuator needed to be replaced. we performed repair (at a cost of roughly $2,000.) a few days later on a longer drive the brake lights turned back on. we returned it to the dealership and were told that the brake booster/master cylinder assembly needed to be replaced at an additional cost of $2,900. i notice that toyota had a recall for this part on other 2010 prius vehicles but my vehicle is not included in that recall.

I was driving to my house and the brake pedal went to the bottom. several lights appeared on the dashboard. i was driving in the highway and fortunately there was an exit and i could get out of the highway and i manage how to stop and i did not crash. the story could be another if i was driving faster. the next day i took it to the toyota dealer and they told me that the problem was the booster pump (attached you can find the estimate). i was shocked when i found how much was going to cost me. my car has never had a problem and all oil changes had been at the same toyota dealer. i have never taken the car anywhere else. investigating i found that this model prius 2010 in 2013 had a recall for this same problem affecting 82000 people. i am using the car with because i have to go out to work every day for the sustenance of my family and with a constant concern of having an accident and causing death to other people including myself, i need the help of toyota to pay for the entirety of arrangement i already spoke with toyota headquarters and they said that they will not help me with the cost of the repair, it is really expensive and it is not my fault. does toyota have to wait until there is an accident? or injury or dead people?.

My 2010 prius has had lights come up on the dashboard. vsc, brake, traction & abs. after the local toyota dealership ran diagnostics, it came to light that the brake assembly with accumulator will need to be replaced for near $5,000. it would seem that this is a common problem that has resulted in a recall for only some of the 2010 prius models. mine was not one of these recalled. i would like to request recognition that this should be covered under the same recall. toyota is a good product, and i understand that recalls are just a part of life. as it stands, my regenerative braking no longer works and i have been informed that i will lose all braking eventually.

Driving down the road when the brakes went out. warranty coverage from toyota on the same model, make, and year for this problem. my vin not included in this coverage. the brake accuator assy is the issue. high dollar repair!!

I took my 2010 prius in for airbag work & they asked how long i had been driving w/ my brake warning lights on. they had not been on prior to then. they hooked up a computer & showed me that the vehicle had been started 31 times since the warning was 1st detected. they said there was most likely a leak in the brake booster system. they reset the warning, i drove for a day & it came back on again while driving after about 10 starts. after the warning lights came on again, i noted an immediate & significant change in braking responsiveness & vehicle control...started pulling to the right. this was on the highway while driving straight. i took the car in to a local toyota dealer for full diagnostic & they said that they're were unable to locate the exact leak location, but that their tech order shows to just replace the booster which will cost about $3,300 o replace.

Brake actuator failure. complete loss of power brake function while driving vehicle on the highway. currently a warranty enhancement letter covering this issue, but only up to 2009 model prius, i have a 2010, not covered. this is a huge safety concern as it happened while driving with no indication of trouble beforehand.

No brakes. brake pedal hard to press. c1256 code found. several different lights on dashboard light up plus buzzer sound. brake booster has gone bad. recall on same model/make of vehicle. believe part to be defective. went from having brakes to little braking capability.

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 toyota prius. while driving 65 mph, the brake, air bag, and traction control warning indicators illuminated continuously. the contact mentioned that the brake pedal was depressed and traveled to the floorboard. when the contact depressed the brake pedal slowly, the vehicle engaged. the contact called roadside assistance and was informed that there was no failure. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who informed the contact about a recall for the brakes. the contact called al hendrickson toyota at 954-972-1100 and they stated that there was no recall for the brakes. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that the vin was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 13v235000 (service brakes). the approximate failure mileage was 70,000.

Several brake lights came on the dash while my wife was driving and the brake pedal had a different sensation. she said it still worked, but felt very different - enough that she would have thought something was wrong even if the lights hadn't come on. i took it to a local shop who said it had to go to dealership. dealer wanted $3983 to repair saying that abs accumulator was bad. in doing research i discovered that many prius' were recalled, but unfortunately my vin was not included in the recall. also discovered that toyota issued an "enhanced warranty program (zg1) for models 2004-2009. but my newer model (2010) is not included in the enhanced warranty program. it feels like toyota knows they have a problem, but are not standing behind their vehicles. i contacted toyota corporate customer service and spoke with two different individuals who confirmed that because my vin number did not match the recalls, there was nothing toyota would do for me.

Car in two accidents over two years body was not properly welded back to the frame! brakes were not properly realigned neither was the steering column transmission bands were not operating and would not shift and numerous other parts for leakage from brake lines to transmission lines all lines were broken and so are the seals on them!

Serious brake issues! failure of brake booster and master cylinder causing impaired braking lending to safety issues. many insiders at toyota know the 2010 prius brake issues exist and question why it is not handled at the corporate level. brakes are spongy and additional pressure must be applied. the abs is inoperable because of the problem. please hold toyota accountable for this chronic issue. the safety of all involved is affected due to inconsistent braking. my dealership asked corporate toyota to address and they refused.

I noticed a 'clicking' in my brakes and loss of pressure in nov. 2017. i took it to a mechanic friend to look it over and i was advised that it was the brake booster leaking and i should take it to the dealership because there had been a 'recall' sent on certain vin #s but mine wasn't listed on it. when i took it to the dealership they wanted to charge me $700+ to diagnose and 'fix' the issue. it was not on the recall list because of the production date of my car. i fought with toyota corp and they decided to cover the cost as a 'courtesy'. the clicking stopped for about 3 weeks then came back much louder and more frequently. still losing pressure, enough so that when i was sitting at a stop light i would put the car in 'park' to keep it from moving forward. again the dealership said this was not covered by the recall and this time the cost would be $4700+ to 'fix' the issue. this time they told me they confirmed the nitrogen leak with the 'bubble test' so it was, in fact, the brake booster, but it was still not covered. this time toyota said they would only pay $2000 for the total cost, again as a 'courtesy', but i would be responsible for the remaining amount. i asked the dealership if there was something i had done to cause this issue and i was told 'no'. to me then that is a defect from the manufacturer and i should not be responsible. i have maintained this vehicle with the dealership on a consistent basis, always taking it to them for oil changes, rotations, etc. always on the suggested time schedule.

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 toyota prius. while driving approximately 30 mph and depressing the brake pedal to slow down the vehicle, the pedal became loose. as a result, the vehicle continued moving and the anti-skid, brake, and abs warning indicators illuminated. the contact was able to bring the vehicle to a stop by depressing the brake pedal multiple times. the vehicle was taken to cavender toyota (5730 northwest loop 410, san antonio, tx 78238, (210) 681-6601) where it was diagnosed that the power booster failed and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired due to the repair fees. the manufacturer was notified and informed the contact that the vin was not included in any recalls; therefore, no further assistance was offered. the approximate failure mileage was 85,000.

Brake booster failure.

Without warning, total failure of power assist to brakes. numerous dash warning lights and loud buzzer sounds. requires extreme brake pedal force to stop the car. extremely unnerving and dangerous situation.

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 toyota prius. while driving 5 mph, the brake, anti-skid, and abs warning indicators illuminated. the contact kept driving, but the brakes locked when the brake pedal was depressed. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that there was a leak in the brake accumulator, and the brake booster pump assembly needed replacement. the vehicle was not repaired. the contact called his insurance company and was informed of nhtsa campaign number: 13v235000 (service brakes). the contact was advised to take the vehicle to a toyota dealer. the vehicle was taken to tejas toyota (19011 highway 59 n humble, tx 77338 (281) 446-0271) where it was also diagnosed with a leak in the brake accumulator and the brake booster needed replacement. the vin was not included in the recall. the manufacturer was notified of the failure and confirmed that the vin was not included in the recall. the failure mileage was approximately 165,600.

The brakes seem to disengage for a second at random times while pressing on them in a normal manor. i drive every day abut 20 miles and this seems to happen about once a month. i didn't think much of it until a few days ago when i had to slam on my breaks to try and avoid an accident. during that incident they disengaged for a second again. this was a second too long and i was unable to avoid a collision. i looked this up after my accident and i surprisingly saw similar reports on google for my car. but it looks like toyota is saying that it doesn't affect my vin number? i'm here to say that it does.

On october 7, 2017 a driver cut me off on the highway, i pressed my brakes hard and the vehicle pulled to the side and i hit the retaining wall. the impact was not too hard and i was able to continue travelling. the abs warning light is on and i hear a strange humming noise under the hood. the dealer ran diagnostics and said i needed to replace two main parts in the brake system. i found a toyota safety recall 13v-235 affecting other prius 2010 that describes exactly the same problem and requires replacement of exactly the same parts indicated in the safety recall. the only problem is that toyota reported this problem in vehicles of the same year and model, but my car's vin was not included in their indicated range. thank you for your help

My car had the abs warning light on and i heard a strange noise in the engine compartment. last year. on october 7, 2017, i was driving on the highway and another driver cut me off, so i had to break hard. the car pulled hard to one side and i hit the retaining wall. fortunately, the damage to the car was on the bumper cover only, and i was not injured, so i was able to continue driving. the dealer ran diagnostics on my car after the crash and reported i needed to have certain parts replaced. toyota safety recall 13v-235 describes exactly the symptoms my car shows and requires replacement of exactly the same parts. the only problem is that my car's vin does not fall in the range toyota reported in the recall. apart from that , the problem is the same. my accident could have been very serious had the retaining wall that stopped me not been there. i could have been in the center lanes and the story would have been very different, even with me surviving the accident.

Reference: toyota prius brake booster pump assembly recall 2013 the 2013 recall was issued for approximately 82,000 prius vehicles manufactured from march 2009 to october 2009. the car i own and operate, according to a toyota representative, was built in december 2009 -- thus, i presume, did not fit within parameters of this particular recall. a toyota customer service representative said that the vehicle matching my vin number has no safety recalls associated with it. however, the same issue referenced in the recall -- a faulty brake pressure accumulator that compromises the brake booster pump assembly system -- appears to have surfaced in my 2010 prius. no accident has occurred. the vehicle is indicating a problem via its dashboard warning lights. a toyota maintenance technician, on sept 21, 2017, diagnosed that the car's brake accumulator pump is malfunctioning -- and that it needed to be replaced. i am petitioning for consideration to expand the 2013 recall, which was ordered to correct a design/manufacturing defect. the same flaw is present in my vehicle (even though my vehicle was not covered by the original recall).

I drive a toyota prius 2010, i was driving when my brake, abs, and traction control light came on at once. when i tried to apply the brake it would take a lot of force for my car to stop. i went to the toyota dealership to get it checked out and they said part number c1391 has to be replaced. tech found abnormal leak in accumulator. the accumulator pump assembly needs to be replaced. which would cost me 2,000 dollars parts and labor. they also told me they might find out that the master cylinder might have to be replaced as well if damaged. which would be 3,300 dollars. so worst case scenario it would be over 5,000 with tax to fix my car. i noticed other 2010 prius models were recalled for the exact issue but only certain vin numbers. my vin number wasn't included. i feel like it should be if many other people are complaining about the same issue with this car. i can't afford over 2,000 in repairs let alone 5,000.

Brake slipping when over the manhole and lost control even not wet surface. i intentionally drove over same spot 4 times on 8/20/2017 and exactly same conditions happen.
