As i was driving on a road, about 25 mph, while my foot was on the accelerator pedal the car just decreased it's speed to a stop as i continually pushed my foot on the pedal.
Car worked flawlessly and we maintained it regularly. took it in to address recall of jov update pwr mgmt ecu at dealer. dealer completed recall work. 2 days later engine lite check hybrid system and the ! on and triangle on. the car continued run but now was studdering when was not before the recall work. took it back to the dealer and he said we need a new hybrid battery. we believe the software update they did created a this issue. dealer acting ignorant and saying it needs new battery because of number of miles on car. asked for diagnostic print out from when they did recall work to they new diagnosis and they would not provide. we believe the recall update created a technical problem with our hybrid battery. we also believe that dealer not being honest regarding issues with this recall update and is using it as an opportunity to reduce liability for toyota on failed recall work and to use it as an opportunity to bring in large ticket sales repair ie they quoted us a new hybrid battery for 5,500.
I have been experiencing the safety risks outlined in the following manufacturer recall number: j1v nhtsa recall number: 18v684 i have been dealing with this issue for the past 2 - 3 years and unknowingly may have been spending hundreds of dollars on repairs that may not have needed to be replaced. currently, my car is not running as i experienced a stall (11/09/2018) while exiting the freeway at a high speed with the screen reading "check hybrid system" and the dash lit up with the yellow triangle and exclamation point. i am not able to accelerate during the stall, brakes are working. this has happened to me countless times, almost always on the freeway or exiting and while traveling at a high speed. sometimes the vehicle would start back up after a few minutes of being turned off. this particular time (11/09/2018), i coasted the vehicle to a safe spot and the vehicle engine never turned on again. i towed the vehicle to my residence and then to my mechanic. i am only able to put the vehicle in neutral. the motor will not come on at all and the screen reads "check hybrid system". the car had over 1/4 tank of gas at the time. i currently use my vehicle for my livelihood doing independent delivery services such as instacart, doordash, postmates etc. since there is yet to be a remedy for this situation i want to know what my options are to get back the money i've spent or compensation for this vehicle since it is not usable and unable to be fixed by the manufacturer in a timely manner. i can provide documentation in regards to repairs made as well as visits to toyota in which they were unaware of the issue.
On two occasions, june 22, 2018 and august 15, 2018 this vehicle suddenly accelerated while using cruise control and traveling at speed on generally flat, straight, 4 lane road in good weather. i have attached documents with summaries of each event and maps showing route and terrain during the events. hard braking slowed but did not stop the vehicle either time. both times, after traveling some distance while braking but continuing to accelerate without my foot on the accelerator, the vehicle made a thunking noise felt through the floor of the car and suddenly stopped accelerating. in the first incident this was after about 2 miles, the second time after about a mile. after each incident i phoned the local dealership and was told that if they could replicate the event they might be able to figure it out. i reported the events to corporate toyota and an investigation was opened. the vehicle was taken to fred anderson toyota of asheville where they spent several days with the car, interacting with toyota, who was asking them to explore and test various things related to the dual pedal fail safe, the computer, snapshots of events on the computer etc. their final judgement was that floor mats may have interfered, though it was the first thing i checked when i regained control of the car.
Brake actuator has failed. traction control, abs, brake lights illuminated on dash. more effort needed to engage brakes. this affects the regenerative braking as it no longer charges on braking as it was designed. checked toyota website for recalls since this is safety related, and there are none. which is quite disturbing. i've researched prius forums and this seems to be an ongoing problem. toyota issued a recall for the generation 2 model, however this seems to be a problem for generation 3 models as well. the problem did occur when on the highway traveling at 60 mph.
I was driving on the freeway at about 70 mph when the "check hybrid system" light came on and the car lost all power and ability to accelerate. it completely began to descend in speed and within 2 minutes came to a complete shut down. i could have easily been rear ended had i not moved to the side of the freeway as quickly as i did.
I change the brake booster twice and hace the same problem. my brake pedal loss of braking ability or slipping brakes and the warning brake, abs and traction light permanently on, and no cruise control works at all
In the past year i have had 2 occurrences of unintended acceleration. the first in february of 2016. i was exiting a parking ramp up hill and stepping on the accelerator. i was driving straight then turning to the left (90 degree turn). when i took my foot off the accelerator, the car continued to accelerate and i was unable to get it slowed/stopped for about a block even though i was applying heavy brake pressure. the car was revving against the brake pressure. no damage or injuries occurred. i took the car to the dealership where i purchased it (purchase date 8/3/13). they checked the car over and found no apparent cause for the acceleration. i took the car home, and it drove normally until 11/26/16. on that date i was driving very slowly in a flat parking lot, and the car began accelerating without my pushing the gas pedal. i was driving straight and then turning to the right (90 degree. i got the car stopped in a few feet by pressing extremely hard on the brake. my car did not hit anything. technicians from the dealership have not been able to find a cause and i have not been able to get past toyota's customer service department to escalate the issue for more detailed diagnostics. i have attached the timeline of trying to get the car diagnosed and the issue escalated as well as why i don't think user error is a factor. *tr
I was in a parking structure going approximately 15 mph when i removed my foot from the accelerator to press the brake. before i could get my foot to the brake, the car quickly accelerated. it took at least two attempts at pushing the brake peddle before the car came to a stop. and, to be honest, the guardrail the car hit helped actually stop the vehicle. it was totally unexpected and extremely scary. in hindsight, i should have suspected that there may be a problem when i noticed that sometimes when applying the brakes to come to a stop there would be a feeling of the brakes slipping and the car lurching forward a bit. the dealership had the car towed in to get checked out, and i have been told that they will notify toyota. in the meantime i am concerned about the safety of this car!
On 05/25/2016 at about 9am, while in motion at a rate of speed approx 25 mph on a street during construction (don't know if the bumpy road had anything to do with it), the change oil soon light appeared and seconds later all the lights on the dash came on with the message to check the "check hybrid system" . i tried to stop the vehicle and it kept accelerating. i pressed on the breaks really hard and the traction control light kept flashing on and off like crazy but it barely had any impact. although the vehicle slowed, it did not come to a full stop. i ended up hitting the vehicle in front of me. thank god it was a truck and as able to stop the car from moving further or i could of ended up in the middle of an intersection. after the collision, the car would not stop although the park button was pressed and light was on. i even tried turning off the vehicle and the vehicle stayed on and in drive. i ended up in the hospital and don't know how it eventually got turned off but that was very frightening. i had my children in the car. on impact, the seat belts did not even tighten.
My prius suddenly accelerated today. my wife was not in an accident. my vin is [xxx]. i spoke with my wife and the incident occurred up a hill when she was parking (decelerating), she didn't notice that the floor mat was not stuck at the time and there was no warning of a problem. also, this has not happened before. vehicle was going up a hill on a city street, no ice, going strait, no damage to the car, unknown to what failed. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).? *tr

I was going up the on ramp to i -75 exit 341 in florida when i lost all power steering and braking and the check hybrid system light came on. cars were coming at me at 70 mph and could have killed my wife and i. this is the second time i have reported the problem of check hybrid system light coming on and losing all power. this should be investigated a sap to prevent so eone from being killed. *tr
Accelerated to get on highway. once on the highway the system hybrid warning light and other warning lights and audio alarms came on. we had to exit immediately because we lost the ability to maintain highway speed. *tr
April 23,2014 entered a parking structure, when parking the car, the car accelerated, without reason. car hit and broke the parking barrier, which was a oak log. reported to toyota dealership but did not want to view the car, claimed it was probably operator error. foot both on gas and brake at same time. i do not drive with two feet, said did not think it was that. he then referred me to the toyota corporate line, i have a file with them about the acceleration issue. just happy this happened in a parking structure and not in a crosswalk situation where a pedestrian could have been hit. *tr
If the vehicle hits a pot hole while slowing down, there's a sudden loss of braking power and the vehicle moves a few feet forward. the vsc light comes on at the same time. i'd noticed this a few times in the past but with the roads deteriorating after a bad winter, the pot holes are bigger and this is very prominent and scary. going to take to the dealer for inspection. i feel it's definitely an issue with the braking system. *tr
I am writing due to having had my 2010 toyota prius self accelerate while driving on four occasions. this began occurring after i took my vehicle to toyota of clermont, florida for a routine service on 3/31/2014. while the vehicle was there, the dealership also performed a recall on the vehicle. this recall is referenced as: tech(s) : 20799 recall eoe motor generator and power management update perform software update for mg ecu and power management ecu agg09a 0.7 as of 8/5/2014 my vehicle has had unintended acceleration on 4 occasions. in 3 of the 4 i know it has occurred as i released the brake. this release is confirmed by the fact that it is necessary to reapply the brake to stop the acceleration. the 4th occurrence may also have occurred after a brake release. i have attempted to resolve this problem via both my local toyota dealer and toyota customer experience center at 1 800 331-4331. i am being told the problem is operator error. i have done the research to see if this is even possible. for me to apply the brake and fuel simultaneously would be both extremely difficult and very obvious. additionally if this diagnosis were correct the vehicle would stop accelerating when the brake was released. in fact the vehicle accelerates when the brake is released not while the brake is depressed. *tr
I came to a red light and was braking and as it almost came to a complete stop it jerked forward. thankfully there wasn't a car in front of me otherwise i would of hit it. i'm taking it in soon. i don't drive it everyday and when i do it's less than a mile. *tr
As i was approaching a red light i applied the brakes and then shortly after hit a pot hole and the car lunged forward as if accelerating on it's own. fortunately there wasn't another vehicle in front of me as i would have most definitely rear-ended it. i almost shot into the intersection and most certainly shot past the normal stopping spot for waiting at a red light. scary incident to say the least. *tr
I started noticing a high pitch noise sporadically on my car after it was a few months old. if i stopped and restarted the car, the noise would go away. when i brought it to toyota they could not reproduce the problem. it would happen about 1-3 times per month and some months not at all. on this particular trip about a month ago, i did not notice the noise on start up (i had a cold that affected my hearing), but did hear it after getting on the highway. there was no where to reasonably pull over and restart the car safely, so i kept driving. after about 15-30 minutes the speedometer cluster/dash that displays the speed, fuel and drive position went blank and the noise went away. searching online there were at least a handful of others who either had their speedometer replaced under warranty or otherwise with the same issue. i also found a recall on the 2009, a year earlier, prius for the same issue and yes the same company makes the part. i brought my car to the dealer asap and the dealer wanted to charge me $120 to diagnose. when i questioned them, they said they need to take the dash apart, which is a lie as this would be more expensive as per our conversation. i asked for a quick computer diagnosis and they refused. i then called toyota who said my car is long out of warranty for this part and that because i didn't pay for a diagnosis they would not take it further. when i pressed on with them they hid behind confidentiality when i asked about others who had this issue and then they said even if i paid for a diagnosis and this was found defective there are no promises. they want ~$1,200 to fix this defect. *tr
While returning from work at 5:30 pm, 02/18/14 on highway 90 west to albany, ny, with cruise control set to 50 mph, the accelerator pedal got stuck on my 2010 toyota prius. the pedal did not return back to its original position even when i turned off cruise control. i spontaneously tapped the accelerator pedal in the hope of releasing but did not yield any results and the vehicle maintained its speed. applying brakes made no effect and did not curtail the car. it continued to move with almost the same speed even when brake pedal depressed. i had no control on my car in one of busiest freeways. i continuously applied the brakes and tried to merge to the right most lane with hazard blinkers on. it took more than 5 miles panic ride trying to avoid trucks and other cars to merge to the right lane. even with the brake fully depressed, the 2010 prius did not slow down and i managed to reach the shoulder lane which had gravel & snow. then i pressed park button and switched off the engine by pressing the power button. i could feel the wheels lock up but the prius continued to move with strong rubber burning smell. finally, i engaged the parking breaks to stop it from moving into the freeway. after complete stop, with difficulty i manually pulled up the accelerator pedal. this entire ordeal was shocking and an unbelievable narrow escape from a major catastrophic event. i thanked god & called 911 and the highway patrol police came to the spot and promptly helped to move the vehicle and myself from the freeway traffic. the 2010 toyota prius was moved to toyota dealer service center where i purchased the car & performed every scheduled maintenance service punctually. incidentally the last service and certification was in 12/2013. it is obvious that even regular dealer maintenance service and certification did not help this vehicle. report filed with toyota motor customer service. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2010 toyota prius. the contact stated that while driving at low speeds over a bump or pothole, the vehicle would suddenly experience unintended acceleration. the contact mentioned that the failure occurred even when the brakes were engaged. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not notified. the failure mileage was 60,000.
I was driving with the flow of traffic (around 30 mph) on a main surface street in a middle lane of a multilane street when suddenly the engine stopped, and i was unable to make the engine respond. the car immediately began to slow down; i could not make it accelerate to keep in the flow of traffic. i managed to carefully drift over to the right and maneuver through an intersection and glide to a stop on the right side of the road. i turned off the engine and repeatedly tried to restart it to no avail. i called for towing service and had the car towed to my toyota dealer, where the service people said it was an "internal failure" and replaced the inverter assembly. what has terrified me is that i could have been on the freeway driving at least 60 mph, where the consequences would be devastating to me and others. i asked if toyota would be reporting this to the nhtsa, and they said that was an internal determination. i asked if this had happened before to others and did not receive a clear answer. *tr
I have a 2010 toyota prius that really has me concerned. twice recently when applying the brakes, it has lunged forward and i was forced to punch the brakes very hard with both feet to make it stop. both times i was on city streets going about 35 mph. it really scared me. luckily there was nobody in front of me or i would have had an accident. i took it to the dealer to have it checked out and am awaiting the verdict. *tr
Today, 1/21/2013 at approximately 245pm while drive back from disney with my family on the florida turnpike(mile point marker 294 nb) at approximately 65-70 mph our 2010 prius suddenly lost power and "check hybrid system" came on. mind you i was traveling on a major road when the car suddenly kept decreasing in speed and i just turned on to the median and the car rolled to a stop. luckily there was a florida safety patrol behind me who put on his flashing lights until i was safely off the turnpike. car would not restart and had to be towed. car arrived at xxx(dealer) toyota at 502pm and i am awaiting a call back on the problem. this is a safety issue. also, there was no warning before the car failed. thank you. this is what i filed with toyota minus identifying data. *tr
my prius iv, purchased new in 2010, intermittently had a lunging forward problem when going over speed bumps, pot holes etc. i would have to stop it by braking quickly, so i didn't collide with a car ahead. i informed toyota of this problem within the first year. they tested it and said they could find nothing. i mentioned this to them on various occasions when i took the car for its periodic maintenance of 5000 mile intervals. on december 26, 2012 i was stopped waiting to go left when i was rear-ended. i went to pull over to the side of the road to assess the damage. when i accelerated to get to the side of the road, the car took off crazily, at a high rate of speed for about 6-7 seconds, zigzagging uncontrollably on the 2 lane road. if there were cars coming toward me, i would have been in a head on crash. i immediately called toyota service of scranton,pa and asked them to see and assess the car's problem. they made an appointment and concluded.said there is no problem internally, and suggested removing the after market floormat. i then proceeded to show them the same problems many customers are having with the prius , including an article by steve wozniak, the co-founder of apple company, who had acceleration problems with his 2010 prius. i called the main toyota headquarters later, explaining the problem and they too said there is no malfunction , only mentioning the floor mats again.. this is not the case as the car has had acceleration problems from the beginning and to further clarify, i was able to finally stop the car... the mat was no where near the accelerator. i am afraid to drive this for others' safety, my passengers and my own safety. i take care of my cars faithfully. you can view my records. i am also fearful if i trade this car, someone else might get injured or killed. can you please check and advise. *tr
While carefully parking my prius 2010 at a hospital it accelerated suddenly and crashed over the cement curb. i say carefully because my prius had done this before but not enough damage was done to file with insurance. there followed another accident and another accident. then this evening while driving into my carport my prius accelerated again. it threw my dog that was in the front seat to the floor but i was able to avoid car damage as i was going to stop. i was barely moving, that is i still had my foot on the accelerator, maybe i could say coasting, when this acceleration suddenly occurred. this was the same type acceleration that caused all the prior accidents. i have reported this to toyota... and now you. hopefully you will help me. my prius is in the carport. it has not been moved. however, it is my only transportation. my prius' latest happening, before the one just stated, the hybrid system quit working during rush hour traffic on the interstate near a busy intersection. this was repaired before toyota sent some one to investigate the prior accidents. if more information is needed just let me know. this prius also had a battery replaced shortly after it was purchased as a new vehicle. this prius has wheel rim scratches. *tr
When parking, my 2010 prius accelerated forward causing it to go over a curb form damaging the front bumper. unexpected acceleration has caused four accidents damaging my car. i have records of these repairs. the hybrid system went out 8/30/2013 and in march,2014 the back brakes fell off: no bolts, pads, caliber, fluid were in place when it was towed to robbins toyota in texarkana, tx. the front right booster was blown out while in this shop. my vehicle there over a month for various reasons. *tt
Traveling on parkway when we were approaching a vehicle going south down at approximately 55 we were traveling 72 with cruise control engaged, i tapped the brakes to try and slow and nothing happened i then held the brake pedal down for more than 15 seconds with no success, tried to disengage the cruise by pulling back on the handle on the steering wheel and still it would not disengage, we struck the truck at 72 mph only because we had no where else to go and the vehicle would not disengage cruise. the cruise control light was still illuminated after the vehicle came to rest after impact and the vehicle brakes still did not appear to function, this vehicle was a toyota lease and was told multiple times by toyota that the issues was recalled by toyota and that this vehicle had the recall performed. *tr

The unintended acceleration accident happened on 7/18/2012, ~6:20 pm at company's parking lot. i backed my 2010 prius slowly. then i saw a car coming on my way. but before i took any action, this prius suddenly started accelerating, it went wildly, and turned more than 360 degree backward in the parking lot in just a few seconds. since the car parked between a building and a slop, from the front mirror, first, i saw the building wall and glasses, then i saw the slope, then i saw a car parked close to my car: no! don't hit that car! that is the last thing i remember. because of the fast turning of the car and because i was so terribly scared, i lost conscious after that until the prius hit the truck and bounced back and stopped by itself. after a few seconds, i woke up and realized: i am still alive. i got off the car and saw prius passed the two curbs and hit the truck. the two tires on the driver side got flat because they passed the curb very fast. i was so scared that i couldn't recall of anything for a few days until weekend. why did the car lose control? one may argue that i stepped on the accelerator. this could happen to new drivers, but not to me because i have been driving for so many years and always a good driver. many times i saw a car on my way when i was backing, i always stopped right away. and i was healthy in a normal day in normal mode, alert as usual. why would i step on accelerator when backing? even if i mis-stepped on the accelerator, i can always switch to brake right away. but i could?t do anything about the car on the day. it was out of control completely. after i lost conscious, my hands were off the steering wheel and my foot didn't step on anything, the car didn't slow down but still moved fast and passed two curbs easily. such a manipulation can only be done when the car is in acceleration, and by itself. please investigate it asap! *tr

On multiple occasions, i have experienced issues with the car suddenly accelerating while i'm pressing the brakes. specifically, this appears to occur when braking on uneven surfaces (ie construction areas, pot holes, etc.). this can obviously become a deadly situation if one is trying to stop the vehicle and with this problem run into the car/vehicle ahead. most recently this occurred on the surface streets in low speed, in traffic. it feels like the car lurches ahead while applying the brake. i was told by the service people at toyota that i was making this up. i can recreate it given the right surface. *tr
I travel quite a bit these days and on my way home from coachella music festival, my brakes gave out. i mean to say, pushing the pedal all the way down, no resistance, no slowing, a completely limp pedal....until i repeatedly stomped on it and the car locked and skidded to a stop, feet away from the car in front of me. the brakes returned intermittently, so i took the right hand lane at 40mph and tested the brakes regularly until i got to my dealership. scariest thing ive ever experienced. ive had the car since august 09' and currently have 43k miles on it. i know thats a lot, and its unfortunately outside of my warranty now, but i wanted to log it here, as soon as i could. it started one day before the freeway incident, whenever i would depress the pedal, a loud high pitched squeak would come out. i didnt think much of it outside of "better get that looked at" but didnt notice any brake failure. the next morning, i turned on the car and every dashboard light came on and a fast consistant beeping went on for about 5 minutes, during which time the brake pedal had zero resistance. i sat there with a serious wtf look on my face, when out of nowhere, the dash lights went away, as did the beeping, and the car drove as normal with full regular brake pressure (besides the squeak). i received a call back from the dealership. they say it's going to be $3k for a master cylinder replacement and that toyota corporate wouldn't aid in the cost, despite my hybrid warranty still covering the hybrid ecu (the master cylinder unit includes the ecu). [xxx] (my dealership service manager) said herself that it was not my fault and that the part is not repairable, "it either works, or it does not. it must be replaced". this could have been catastrophic, had i been any closer to the car in front of me. the failure of one part (which failed through no fault of the customer) rendering the brakes nearly useless is too scary not to report here. 2010 prius 4 dr hatchback the speed control on my prius uses radar to speed up and slow down. if i come up on a car doing 45 mph and i'm at 55, the vehicle slows down. when i turn to the other traffic lane, and the lane is clear the car accelerates rapidly. on a number of occasions i have braked to disengage the cruise control, i fell like i don't have control of the car. the fix: adjust the computer so speed acceleration is slower. i think it is a crash hazard. *tr
