On friday 2/26 at ~ 1:15pm, i was driving my 2010 prius. it was raining hard outside. as i put on brakes, the car seemed to accelerate / did not brake and drove into a parking lot curb. damage was done to the front end of the car. there have been multiple occasions during which my husband and i have separately noticed this same type of acceleration / failure to brake - particularly when driving in the rain, down a hill, or over an uneven surface (like a pothole). none of these other occasions have resulted in any injury or damage. following the 2/26/2010 incident, i contacted toyota that same day. i was told that a customer relations manager would call me back by tuesday 3/2. did not hear back. on wednesday 3/3 i called to follow up. after being on hold for 1 hour, i gave up. sent an e-mail to customer service advising of the situation. still did not hear back. on saturday 3/6 i called again. was again on hold x 1 hour and told customer service representative of what happened - they apologized and said they did not have my contact information. was told i would get a call back by 3/9. did finally speak with an agent on 3/8 who now tells me that i will get a call within 10 days. at that time, i will be offered an inspection appointment within the following 30 days. and, within 30 days after the appointment i will receive written notification of the outcome of the inspection. i feel unsafe driving my car. i would hope for a faster resolution to this situation. i would like for the abs fix for which the 2010 prius is being recalled to be completed as soon as possible. and, i would like for the damage to my car to be repaired. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2010 toyota prius. the driver stated that she was traveling 35 mph when she switched lanes. when she applied the brakes and the vehicle started to stop but then it lunged forward and accelerated on it's own while her foot was on the brake pedal. the driver stated that the vehicle then came to a stop after her foot remained on the brake pedal. the driver did notify the dealer of the failure. the vin was unknown. the failure mileage and current mileages were 10,000.
Our 2010 prius was experiencing surging over bumps, we had it re-programmed last week and today we experienced the surge again when we went over a bump, just like before. *tr
When i am driving my toyota prius 2010 and the vehicle goes over a bump or hole in the road the vehicle "jumps" especially is i am braking to slow the vehicle down. *tr
Sudden acceleration or surge while going over a pothole or bump. *tr
2010 toyota prius - i was driving my 2010 toyota prius for a short period as a company car. i noticed that when the battery got low while in park the engine would kick in to recharge the battery. the engine would cause the car to slightly jerk forward or back which would be expected by the force of the engine thrust. what was strange is that when i was crossing the street after coming out of an oil change, my foot was on the brake waiting for traffic to clear only to have the engine kick in and slightly jerk the car forward. it surprised me! like i said my foot was on the brake and kept the car from moving. i visited the toyota dealership to discuss and emailed toyota to make them aware of it. after hearing more news about toyota i felt i needed to share this information. i no longer have the car because i did not feel safe, with all of the problems with toyota, so i turned it back in to my fleet who manages the company cars. i have also noticed a winding sound in the steering wheel when it is turning. i cannot recall the exact date of the incident so i have mentioned feb 19 2010 as the approximate date. if you need an exact date please contact me since i can go to the site where i got my oil change and look up my records to provide an exact date. *tr
2010 prius purchased in august 2009. surge when applying brakes. occurred 4 times including 2/15/2010. has occurred in same place 3 times. each time there were potholes. when they were fixed, did not happen until they returned. complained to toyota dealer and was told this was normal when hydraulic and electronic brakes exchange. i suggested it was a dangerous normal. no damage or injury in any case. was always able to push harder on brake to stop car. stuns you when it happens because it is not normal. since first instance, have tried to keep distance when slowing and braking. *tr
2010 toyota prius; when shifting into reverse is sporadically difficult to control acceleration. lifting my foot off the brake a tiny amount causes the car to feel like it is "surging" backward. the car is controllable, but it is a very different experience from being in reverse most of the time. shifting to park and back to reverse seems to make it go away. this has happened to me 4 times since i bought the car in august 2009. *tr
My issue is similar to others that have complained. when traveling a low speeds and i hit an unexpected bump the vehicle surges forward. this is very dangerous and one that i would hope toyota take notice and address immediately. *tr
Soon after i got my 2010 prius in august, i experienced a braking problem. this has happened about 8 more times so far. while braking as i slowly approach a stop sign or light, if i simultaneously go over a bump or break in the road, the car will lurch forward a couple of yards requiring me to push harder on the brake which then stops the car. this problem has also happened 2 times in the last week while driving slowly and then braking when i encounter ice on the road. luckily, no cars have been directly in front of me when this has happened. i have not reported this to toyota because i have not yet serviced my car. *tw
Tl*the contact owns a 2010 toyota prius. the contact was driving approximately between 50-55 mph on a snow covered road surface, while braking the vehicle suddenly surged forward unexpectedly. the driver was unable to control the vehicle and crashed into a ditch. there were no injuries. a police report was filed for the incident and the vehicle was able to resume normal operation. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for the front end damage. the manufacturer was notified and requested that the vehicle not be repaired until a engineer inspected it. the vehicle has not been repaired at this time. the current and failure mileages were 11,000.
Design flaw on a brand new 2010 toyota prius that makes rattling noise near the gear shift lever that could brake the gear lever. *tr
My husband and i bought a 2010 toyota prius in november 2009. we both have noticed a sort of jerky feeling while braking over a small bump or pothole but we didn't think much of it until last night when i was driving home with my children. i was driving down a residential area at about 30 miles/hr. and was slowing down to stop at a red light. while i was braking i hit a medium sized pot hole. my car just leapt forward about 10 feet. i had my foot on the brake firmly the entire time but the car would not stop. finally my car came to a stop. i was very shaken by this incident. if there was a car in front of me i would have totally rearended them. i came home and immediately called the toyota dealership. i left a message with the service department. my call was returned by the manager this morning. she said that she had not heard anything from toyota about any brake issues and then she asked me whether i was speeding! she did not seem to believe me and basically said that there was nothing that they could do.*tr
I've also experienced braking issues with the prius. this usually happens going over potholes, rough road, or railroad tracks when braking at certain speeds while applying the brakes at moderate force. it momentarily feels like the car is accelerating - it's quite disconcerting. i've also noticed variability in braking distance even on smooth dry pavement where i've had to step harder on the brakes because the car wasn't stopping as expected. *tr
When driving over uneven terrain (ie.; railroad tracks, bumps in the road) my 2010 prius seems to accelerate. i read about the brakes failing... but it really feels like it is accelerating too. it is very scary when this happens as it feels that you will be thrushed into whatever might be in front of you. *tr
At 8:00 am this morning, i was driving through a street at a speed of 20 miles to 30 miles per hour. suddenly, the car jumped a little probably hit a small potholes or bumps. i felt like the car surged forward or may be the brake didn't respond immediately. fortunately, no other car right in front of me and the car speed is not very fast. i was able to brake it and slow down. i have called the dealer and the service representative doesn't think it is a problem. later, i also sent a fax to toyota us headquarter asking for help. *tr
I own a 2010 toyota prius..purchased in august 2009...currently going for 15k miles on the odometer. i want to report issues with sudden acceleration even when i am stepping on the brake. i noticed every time i pass thru uneven road, for example potholes, icy roads, snow. the most common issue i have is as i am going down the road and car hits a pothole or manhole (those with metal covers) the car will suddenly accelerate, although i am stepping on the brake. sometimes i am afraid i will hit the car in front of me, especially when im in traffic. even going at 5-15 mph, the car will accelerate when it hits uneven road like pot holes or icy roads. this has happen quite a few times since i purchased the vehicle. just yesterday, we had about 1-2 inches of snow. i was driving slow and when making a left turn, the car hit some uneven road and snow and accelerated when i was stepping on the brake to make the turn. the car went up the sidewalk and the bumper cracked as it hit the concrete edge that separates the road and the sidewalk. no one was hurt and no property damage was done. the car is working fine, but this sudden acceleration issue is a major concern, especially now that i read and hear in the news that 2010 toyota prius are being reported with complaints of sudden acceleration. i thought my issue was an isolated case. please take this complaint into account. i will be going to the dealership this weekend for the 15k scheduled maintenance and will report the issue to them. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2010 toyota prius. while driving in reverse out of the garage he experienced an unintended acceleration at least three times within a month. also when he was driving at 5 mph and coming to a stop, the vehicle lunged forward and as he jammed his foot harder on the brakes, the vehicle kept going . the vehicle was taken to the dealer on two occasions; however, during a test drive they were unable to duplicate, diagnose or repair the failure. the toyota manufacturer has not been called. the failure mileage was 1,700.
I have a 2010 toyota prius. sometimes, particularly when i'm driving over bumps, applying the brake actually causes the vehicle to nudge forward instead of slowing down. once i have cleared the bumps, the brakes then take effect. the problem is that the car may not actually slow down for an extra 10 to 20 feet. there was one incident where this happened near a crosswalk where people were crossing the road. the car stopped in time, but this could have easily turned tragic. toyota has said nothing about this and don't think there is anything wrong with the car. *tr
Was parking on slight incline facing downhill. hit brake to put car in park, but car lurched forward, over concrete bumper in front of parking space. just happened, have not taken corrective measures yet. also have noticed car lurching forward when slowing around turns, has not caused significant problems yet, no action taken yet. *tr
We live in chicago and own a 2010 prius. we also have experienced the acceleration (forward surge) upon braking on uneven terrain reported by other owners. no accident, but it happens often on our city streets and it is a little unnerving. the last time it happened was yesterday. *tr
I was driving my 2010 toyota prius using cruise control on a highway. i disengaged cruise control to slow down as a vehicle entered the highway in front of me. once the second vehicle had accelerated ahead, i re-engaged cruise control at my desired speed. the cruise control engaged, but continued acceleration, as if i was activating the cruise control mechanism's accelerate "paddle", which i was not actually doing. i immediately dis-engaged cruise control, slowed to my desired speed, and re-engaged cruise control. at this point, the cruise control resumed proper operation and i was able to drive at my selected speed. *tr
The vehicle is a very new prius version 3. there is no problem with the floor pads. there does not seem to be a problem at higher speeds. the problem is short, unexpected bursts of acceleration at lower speeds, especially as the car is slowing down, with or without braking. i believe it occurs especially when the engine shifts from hybrid to all electric. for example, on a curving exit ramp off a road, as the car slows, and as braking and acceleration are released, and the car shifts into propelling itself on electric, there is a burst of acceleration at some time in this maneuver. this has happened several times since purchasing the car a few weeks ago. i spoke to the service manager at he dealership last week. he stated he knew nothing about this, and had heard northing from toyota. he offered to look at the car if i brought it in. subsequently the prius problem became news.*tr
2010 toyota prius. going downhill and approaching a stop sign. my foot is steady on the brake and i am gradually coming to a stop. then, i inadvertently go over a bump in the road and the prius lunges forward. i had to immediately slam hard on the brakes in order to keep the car from going into the intersection. fortunately, there was no car or person in front of me as i was stopping. *tr
I experience a few times week since last summer when i got my 2010 prius the "1 second" brake failure that has been reported for 2010 prius vehicles. as an owner of such vehicle, the pothole on my usual freeway on ramp and the speed bump in my work's parking garage both cause a quick acceleration feeling for about 1/2 second if i'm applying the brakes at the moment of passing over the pothole or speed bump. that 'feeling' may be not an acceleration but a momentary brake failure. the failure is only about 1/2 second and i'm used to it now, though obviously it is an unsafe situation. if i come across such events while, say, braking hard when i see a pedestrian in the parking lot, i could fail to avoid hitting the person. *tr
Toyota prius 2010, my problem is sometimes the gas pedal does not release when trying to stop, i have found that by releasing the brake pedal the throttle releases, this always happens under the speed of 40 mph. this problem is always random, and you never know when it will happen, it has happened about 30 times so far, this started about 6 months ago. is this problem part of the recall. *tr
I have a 2010 prius. when i am braking and hit some bumps in the road, my car lurches forward with brief spurts of acceleration. this has nothing to do with the gas pedal. it seems that others are having similar issues (http://priuschat.com/forums/gen-iii-2010-prius-care-maintenance-troubleshooting/72662-acceleration-problem-our-2010-prius-gen-v-5.html#post1052091). this could be dangerous, especially on a wet road. and the roads are so terrible in los angeles, that i experience this problem more often than i would like. hopefully enough people report this problem that toyota takes action. *tr
Sudden, unintended acceleration--2010 prius on freeway, accelerated with gas pedal to 75. put on cruise control. several seconds later, car surged forward, hard and sudden acceleration. first time happened--three days ago, not driven since. have done nothing yet . *tr
The brakes momentarily release/skip when bringing the vehicle to a stop while passing over a bump or pothole in the road. this has been happening on a regular basis since i bought the car in july 2009. *tr
I drive a 2010 toyota prius and would like to report that when braking, if i hit a pot hole or bump, the car lunges forward or accelerates for a split second. i have had my car for just under 60 days but have had this experience at least a dozen times. it has not caused an accident, but leaves me feeling as if there are moments that i do not have control of my car. it's like it has a mind of it's own! *tr
I have experienced the same issues as reported for my 2010 toyota prius: the vehicle surged forward or temporarily lost braking(in a split second) after driving over a pothole or other uneven surface. *tr
2010 toyota prius. i have experienced on at least 3 occasions, a surge when going over a bump or pothole. i spoke to my law partner about it yesterday. today he showed me the investigation you have opened into this issue. *tr
My 2010 prius accelerates when it hits a pot hole while slowing down. this happens more when there is snow or ice on the road. in icy conditions i am slowing down and not pressing on the brake, but if it hits a pot hole -- a momentary loss of control is experience. it seems like the electric brake switches off and hydraulic brakes kicks in because it brakes harder once back. *tr
2010 prius seems to lurch forward when driving over potholes and other bumps while braking. this has happened near intersections and when turning into parking lots. the car seems to speed up briefly, enough to scare the driver. i've almost rolled through stop signs and nearly run over a few cars when turning into parking lots. *tr
When slowing down over bumpy surfaces, the car temporarily loses braking control (for a second or so). it is terrifying and needs to be looked into. there are hundreds of people online who have reported this exact same problem. *tr
I own a 2010 toyota prius that seem to loose braking power when i have the brake pedal pressed down and then hit a pothole or manhole cover. it happens all the time. when i took it into the dealer a few months ago they didn't find a problem, but it appears to be a common problem for this model. *tr
My 2010 prius has sped up at least three times when i either drive through a pothole or cross railroad tracks, forcing me to hit the brakes hard. the brakes worked as they should and no accident resulted. *tr
I have a 2010 prius. we have had the problem with the brakes when we go over a bump. in addition, if i am driving in cruise control and have to put my foot on the brakes, there is a brief feeling of acceleration so instead i have gotten used to turning off the cruise control before putting my foot on the brakes thereby delaying braking for a brief moment. *tr
Prius purchased nov 2009: at least incidents of car lurching forward significantly and momentary sense of loss of control when braking on uneven surface. occured in dec 09,jan 10, and feb 10. had a pedestrian been crossing illegally, the person could've been hit bec i could not prevent or control that lurching. this is a dangerous situation. i feel i cannot drive my car safely. i need my car for work. i phoned my toyota dealer who said to bring it in for evaluation, but they sound tentative. i want a solution and don't want to be making numerous trips from my rural town to the city dealer for guesses. *cn
I noticed that the car lurches forward whenever driven on a manhole, or a rough patch on road, or a speed hump despite the braking. though i regain control within seconds, the moment of lurch is scary and makes me feel unsafe in other traffic situations. this happens at almost all speeds. i guess from now onwards i will maintain enough gap between this car and the forward one as i seem to be not able to trust this car any further. perhaps i will never recommend this car or any toyota to anyone in future. *cn
2010 toyota prius spontaneous acceleration while braking over bumps, pot holes and slick roadways. *tr
I own a 2010 prius and took the car into the local toyota dealer 2 days ago for the initial 5,000 mile check up to discuss a couple issues i have found with the car. i have experienced on 3 occasions a feeling of brake failure. this has occurred when i am driving over rough road. while the brake is being applied if i hit bumps, the brake pedal drops and i lose the brakes. i have immediately let up on the brake and then reapplied pressure to the brake pedal to get braking back. the dealer tried to achieve the same problem but was unable to replicate it. he said it was just the way the pedal must feel to me. our daughters both have 2006 prius' which i have driven and never experienced this problem with their car brakes. the second problem is with cruise control. again, i have driven a 2006 prius and used cruise control and not experienced the following in the 06 model that occurs in our 2010 model. the car started to accelerate in cruise mode. we have also found it takes a lot of pressure on the brake pedal to take it out of cruise control. the car jerks when tapping the brake pedal lightly to take off cruise control. the dealer again took it out for a test drive and said this is the way the prius feels. i know driving the 2006 model it was not the way the prius feels when you take it out of cruise control. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2010 toyota prius. while driving 10 mph with the brake pedal engaged, the vehicle accelerated on its own . the contact was forced to apply pressure to the brake pedal in order to stop the vehicle. the contact has owned the vehicle for 5 months and the failure has occurred twice. the dealer was called and stated that they have not received any recalls for his vehicle; however, to bring it into to the dealership for a diagnostic test. no repairs have been made to the vehicle. the failure mileage was unknown and the current mileage was 3227. updated 03/12/10. *lj updated 08/30/10*jb
Braking while driving over a pothole causes the 2010 prius to momentarily feel like it's accelerating rather than braking. this has resulted in near-accidents a couple of times. this happens more consistently when turning while braking over uneven pavement. i can repeat this reliably in specific location, and it happens elsewhere too.*tr
2010 prius accelerates when driving over speed bump, pot hole or other uneven surfaces. *tr
I have a 2010 prius and when i drove over a bump or pot hole my car fails to accelerate forward and lose any braking feeling (almost to where i lose control of the car). it happens only for a short moment. *tr
I have experienced at least three times in my 2 month old 2010 toyota prius a lurch forward when braking when my car drives over a bump, pothole, or something slick. most recently i was driving downhill in dense traffic and the lurch felt like an acceleration. i had to slam on the brakes to avoid hitting the car in front of me. this braking problem clearly can be a hazard to safe driving and to any pedestrian or other close vehicle. *tr
2010 toyota prius accelerates when brake is pressed. the vehicle seems to jump forward depending on road conditions. it seems to be the anti lock brakes. the problem usually occurs 2 to 3 times a month. *tr
My 2010 prius hybrid accelerates from electric to fuel mode on its own. i have taken it to toyota dealership 2 times for problem. toyota servicemen states it will occasionally do that depending on the mode the vehicle is in. i find it to be very dangerous as i do not have control when it will happens. servicemen also said that is why there is an alarm beeping to let driver know it is backing up. that does not make sense the alrm is not going to control the mode the vehicle is in. it is a safety issue several times i have almost hit other vehicles or pedestrians when backing up. i now try not to use reverse to avoid a possible accident. please let me know if other vehicles have similar problems. *tr
I have a 2010 prius. i have had 2 occasions where i have hit bumps in the road and my car accelerates without me touching the gas pedal. *tr
