Problems with 2010 Toyota Prius SERVICE BRAKES

On average, the 2010 Toyota Prius starts to “feel” problems with the SERVICE BRAKES and its various aspects after 89 666 miles.

Recently reported SERVICE BRAKES problems on 2010 Toyota Prius

My brakes have failed due to a faulty brake accumulator and brake booster on my 2010 toyota prius. i noticed this problem when attempting to come to a stop at a redlight. the brakes felt spongy and unresponsive. i narrowly missed colliding with the car in front of me by swerving onto the shoulder. toyota previously acknowledged this faulty part but claims that i missed the deadline by 35 days to get it fixed. the repair costs roughly $4,000 which toyota has refuse do to accept responsibility for. i cannot afford to fix this and believe that it is irresponsible for toyota to put their profits above the safety of its' customers. i do no this believe that it is ethical to put a deadline on a safety concern of this nature.

Hazard lights flashing when driving forward or reverse dependent on the speed of wheel rotation. i am told that my skid control ecu as well as the brake booster and pump are bad and need replacing. i keep reading about this issue, but toyota says it is not a broad issue. it is not clear what systems have failed or what risk there is in driving.

The night before, everything was working fine. the next day, i start my car up at 4pm-5pm, first time i started my car and i have new lights on my dashboard. the ebrake light, abs light, brake system light, and traction light. i release my ebrake and the ebrake light is still on. concered i checked the break fluid and the 12v battery and those were fine. drove the car around the block to see if there was an issue or if the lights were just on. the brakes were almost completely out the vehicle would only stop when i put my foot to the floor. i end up taking the vehicle to my local toyota dealership were after four hours of looking around, informed me that it was the brake actuator and the booster pump. which also came with a bill of $3000 to fix it.

Vehicle actuator brake pump assembly making squeaking barking noises when the brake is pressed down and held down the brake pumps back at me. i took to toyota they charged me for running codes and two brake bleeds. agknowledged that it's the break actuator pump assembly that is a extended warrenty but will not fix and charged me because the warning light system is not coming on. this should be a recall not an extended warrenty. my brakes bark and push back every time i brake. this doesn't seem safe to drive on the freeway and not good if an accident incurs because i had to wait until my brakes didn't work. please make a recall and not just an extended warrenty.

Brake/abs and stability system failure. possible actuator or accumulator. touota knows there is a fault and hides behind a software update. system fails and causes unreliable braking with increased force to apply the brakes. brakes apply so hard at times the rear passengers heads hit the rear seat.

I was making a left turn, creeping into a parking space, in a residential area. when i pressed the brake pedal to stop the car, the car accelerated instead. i then slammed on the brakes and the car accelerated again, causing me to go over the curb, over the sidewalk and knock down a fence and shed. i turned the vehicle off, some kind bystanders took the debris off the car so that i could get out. i then called police and the property owner, as well as my insurance company. i am honestly scared to drive the car again, as i do not want this unintended acceleration to happen again. i will be notifying toyota, and the repair shop working on my car has already been informed.

While driving back from running errands my car's lights on the dashboard started to come on and noises started to start happening. i was lucky i was only a few streets away from my house so i decided to drive back home. the break was really hard to press. the brake felt like it was a rock and hard to press. i drove with my hazards on unsure of what could happen while driving. there was something wrong and the car started to beep and i was worried the car might fail to brake so i started to drive very slowly. the brakes were so hard to press. i took my car to toyota the next day and they said there was a defect with my brakes. they had the vehicle for a few days and returned to me saying it was fixed. needless to say this was a very scary situation to be in. i drive a lot. if i had been further away from my home this would have put me in a very dangerous position. i could've been stranded or drove on the freeway in this condition unsure of what was happening. my car could've stopped braking, i could've gotten into a big accident and injured other drivers around me. this is a very serious issue that should be recalled now and save other drivers! in california people drive up to 80 mph on the highway-if we are behind a car and the brakes malfunction you can imagine what will happen to the driver and anyone involved! when i heard toyota was not recalling this on all prius's that might be affected it really scared me. this is unsafe.

Brake failure and car went up curb, knocked down stair rail, hit tree and turned over on side

All brake, abs, and traction control lights came on. checked abs code and received c1391. mechanic can here the actuator continuously running and believe the pump/actuator is bad. i have seen this recalled on 2010 made between march 2009, and october 2009. my manufacture date is sept 2010. vehicle was in motion when the lights came on. the car became hard to stop and regenerative braking is no longer working.

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 toyota prius. the contact stated that while driving at approximately 5 mph, the brake pedal was depressed but failed to operate. the vehicle crashed into the rear of another vehicle. a police report was filed. there were no injuries sustained. the vehicle was driven from the crash site to the residence. sunnyside toyota located at 27000 lorain rd, north olmsted, oh 44070, (440) 777-9911, was contacted and an appointment was scheduled to have the vehicle diagnosed which was still pending. the vehicle was not repaired. the contact stated that the failure was intermittent. the manufacturer was not contacted or notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 93,000.

Even though the break pads are new, the breaks are not working at all when vehicle is in motion. they do not feel tight. the vehicle looses stability in curves at a low speed ( slips) and keeps moving even when breaks are pushed to the end. all the break lights are on. there are several recalls regarding the breaks of this vehicle year 2010 and none applies to the vehicle vin number. it it not reliable at all in the highway. in order to brake the speed must be very slow and the distance must be way more than normal

Even though the breaks seem fine, the electric break system does work at all. all lights are on and the breaks pedals feels loose. when i push the breaks the vehicle keeps going. the abs warning light is on as well as all the other lights regarding to breaks and stability mechanisms.

Loud screeching noise and vibration at brake pedal. abs brake and traction lights all lit up along with beeping. has happened sporadically over last 2 years. have owens car 5 yes. approx 120,000 miles. when the brake noise and all lights appear on dash very low braking ability. happens when driving or staring car. on 6/6 lights and braking failed and do not turn off. took to service at toyota dealer & tech says $3000 plus for repairs. possible leak in abs pump??

Started car one morning, immediately noticed the 'abs', 'brake', and 'traction control' warning lights were on simultaneously. took the car for a drive around the corner, and immediately noticed brakes were very soft and unresponsive. pedal literally sinks to the floor while air can be heard leaking from the system/pedal. . also noticed the brakes no longer recharge the system, and they also feel jerky at times. i checked the brake fluid reservoir, and noticed fluid was halfway between max and low. perhaps a leak somewhere in the system? i contacted my local toyota dealer and will have them take a look at it on 05/10/2019 according to some research i conducted, this is a known issue in the 2010/2011 models. supposedly, over time, vibrations can actually crack the line(s) feeding into the brake master cylinder, and thus resulting in this fault. toyota should definitely be more communicative about these issues. i have owned this car for 4 years, and have never heard of this before. currently not driving the car at the moment, as i do not feel safe

The abs/brake light/ slip inidicator warning triangle on & off. my 2010 toyota prius ii has 153k mile. this has gone on/off for a few weeks now. the brake seems to loose the hydraulic power brake. i feel like the brakes have failed a few times while driving at higher speeds. i have to pump brake and vehicle begins to brake on 2nd pump. i've had to triple my stopping distance as to not rear anyone. i went to autoshop, they said it's the brake actuator/sensors that need to be replaced and it's expensive $2-3k. they said it need to be fix soon because brake might fail at any time. i called camelback toyota, phoenix, az, ed in service dept said there is no safety recall for this even though they know it has been a common problem with priuses . i checked vehicle repair history looks like abs programming was flashed back in 2/11/2010, when vehicle was still on the manufacturer, 3 miles. i have not fixed yet. please research this issue further for safety reasons. i do not want to kill anyone when brakes will eventually fail.

Brakes went completely out and emergency noise was beeping loudly in car. talk to mechanic and he said brake actuator is bad and there was a recall but toyota won't acknowledge and repair

The car was moving when the traction light, abs light and brake lights all came on. thhe brakes felt a little different then. i could still brake but they were more stiff.

When the brakes are applied and going over a rough road surface, or pothole, the brake warning light appears, and the brakes suddenly stop functioning until back on a smooth road surface. this happens all of the time under these conditions. it is really scary when the vehicle suddenly loses all braking while trying to stop. i have a 2010 toyota prius and a 2012 toyota prius. they both have the same problem with the abs braking system. cannot understand why this is not a full recall on this potentially dangerous condition.

Abs failed. warning lights do not appear. heard others have similar issue. toyota will fix the abs only if the warning lights appear. warning lights appear only when car is not on completely. brakes went out with no warning at all. brakes went out with no warning while driving. light bulb leaks moisture has since purchase. light bulbs blow frequently.

Upon braking (exacerbated by wet or slippery conditions and hard braking) the abs system does not behave as expected. instead of pulsating to modulate the amount of braking force and slowing down the vehicle the brakes will completely stop engaging while the car travels a moderate distance (e.g. 10 feet) before the brakes kick in again.

Abs system completely failed while driving, no accident occurred but definitely could have. vehicle was taken to dealer and i was told there was a recall for the abs system on the vehicle but they declined fixing it free of charge due to mileage, and they gave me a quote of $3000 to fix a problem that they have not taken responsibility for a know about. to my understanding a recall is a recall regardless to mileage and i also asked the dealer about the problem 1 year ago and was told it was no problem.

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 toyota prius. the contact stated that the brakes made an abnormal noise and the brake pedal traveled to the floorboard when depressed. also, various warning indicators and gauges remained illuminated on the instrument panel. the contact had to apply force to the brake pedal due to the failure. the vehicle was excluded from nhtsa campaign number: 13v235000 (service brakes), although the vehicle exhibited the same failure as listed in the recall campaign. toyota of hollywood (6000 hollywood blvd, los angeles, ca 90028, (323) 498-2260) was notified and diagnosed that the brake actuator needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure and excluded the vehicle from the brake system recall. the approximate failure mileage was 150,000.

I am entering this complaint based on reading dozens of accounts that resemble my issue exactly. ten minutes into a forty minute drive three lights suddenly came on, the brake, abs and traction control lights. the brakes immediately became soft, requiring 50-60% more effort to stop the car and drastically reduced stopping time. this occurred on a dark county road, after a light snowfall and temperatures in the mid-20's. i quickly pulled into a church parking lot to check the brake fluid level and for any broken brake lines. i also shut off the car hoping to clear the error, which it did not. fluid levels looked normal and i decided to proceed the remaining 25 miles of my drive after ensuring that i could stop as needed. after 20 minutes of driving 45-55mph the lights turned off and braking power was instantly restored to 100%. i have not taken my car into the dealer yet, but plan on notifying them.

I had not any problem with breaks at all....once after taking a left turn.......check pcs sytem with other lights like warning, slippary, abs, front breaks, came on. emergency lights keep flashing even if you shut the car off. i took off the fuse 16 for turn signals...everything came normal....only that i dont have turn signals. as soon as i put the turn signal fuse back...emergency lights started flashing and check pcs system with all other lights came on. dealer diagnosed the car for $ 150.00.....no clue....said they will charge me extra $550.00 to find problem.....on the second day evening they said i need to replace abs actuator will cost me $ 4500.00

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 toyota prius. while driving 35 mph, the vehicle failed to stop when the brake pedal was depressed. the contact had to apply the emergency brake to stop the vehicle. the contact stated that the vehicle exhibited the same symptoms as listed in nhtsa campaign number: 13v235000 (service brakes). the vehicle was taken to toyota of poway (13631 poway rd, poway, ca 92064, 858-486-2900) to be diagnosed, but the failure could not be duplicated. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact they would send her a claim number. the failure mileage was approximately 137,450.

I was exiting exit 3 of interstate 91 in new haven ct and was trying slow down and stop but when i applied the brakes there was no response. i pumped the pedal several times but the brakes still failed. i steered the car to the left to avoid directly colliding with the vehicle in front of me and wound up scraping it and crashing into into a barrier. i have since learned that this has been an ongoing problem with the 2010 prius and am outraged that the company has been willing to gamble with my safety and that of other prius owners. i do not have the ability to scan documents but the claim number is allstate 0523873875 and the ct state police incident report is 1800537795.

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 toyota prius. while driving 55 mph, the park, abs, and vcs warning indicators illuminated and the brakes became difficult to maneuver. the contact had to depress the brake pedal several times to stop the vehicle. the contact stated that the vehicle exhibited the same symptoms as listed in tsb: 0079-18. the vehicle was not taken to a dealer to be diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was approximately 100,000.

Prius anti lock system

Intermittently, several warning lights come on at once while driving: traction control, brake, and abs lights. while on, braking is lessened, brakes feel spongy, and the battery generation indicator shows no energy being produced. i found several similar complaints online. for me, the problem has comes and goes, affecting about 50 percent of my driving time.

Brakes slip and lose grip while braking and traveling over moderate bumps or potholes, also happens while braking hard.

Abs actuator failed while driving vehicle on high speed city street. loss of braking power noticed/observed. actuator failure has been confirmed by toyota dealer - car is currently being held for repair.

The brakes make sounds when pressed. look into the internet and prius chat forums and taking to local mechanic and found the brake actuator is faulty and need replacing asap.

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 toyota prius. while the brakes were engaged and the vehicle was stationary, a loud abnormal noise was heard from under the hood. the vehicle was taken to germain toyota of naples (13315 tamiami trail n, naples, fl 34110, (888) 722-4942) where the contact was informed that the master cylinder needed to be replaced and the linear off set value needed to be re-learned. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 111,399.

I stated to the glendale toyota dealer in california that i hear and feel a buzz/click when i step on the brake and they informed me it is the brake actuator and warranty expired in december 2017. i am requesting is an extension to this warranty or voluntarily make it a safety recall. it is very dangerous and expensive to fix.

I recently noticed that when i open the car door to get into the car (with the engine off), the brake assist primes for quite a bit (> 30 seconds). then i start my car, i notice that the sound can be heard priming the brake (vacuum?) every 15 seconds or so and lasting about 3-5 seconds. it primes every time i release the brake pedal. the dealer said that the brake actuator is bad and will need to be replace or the car will not some in driving conditions.

Brake actuator keeps activating every 10 seconds. the cars abs, traction control, and brakes error lights have all come on. brakes are compromised in some manner which can pose serious safety issues while driving.

When braking while car is going over a pothole, car will briefly accelerate forward before stopping.

Brake pedal goes to floor. brake light is on. dealer says accumulator pump is bad. there is a recall for this item. they replaced it under recall in 2014 and refuse to do it again. quoted $2000 to repair. called toyota customer service and they won't do anything either. it is a safety issue and still having the same safety issues is not ok. i am 6 months pregnant and cannot afford to fix an item that should be covered for life of the vehicle due to this recall.

Letter from congressman olson on behalf of constituent regarding toyota brake recall on her 2010 toyota prius. *ld the consumer was concerned about not receiving a notice for the safety recall for the brakes.*js

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 toyota prius. while driving 20 mph, several warning indicators illuminated. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic and was informed that there was a recall for similar vehicles per nhtsa campaign number: 13v235000 (service brakes). deluca toyota (1719 sw college rd, hwy 200, ocala, fl 34471, (352) 732-0770) was contacted and stated that the vehicle was not included in the recall. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 166,000.

After regular check-ups and maintenance at 90000 miles and 8 years of driving, all of a sudden three brake lights came on, the abs, hand brake, and skid control lights all came on. at this time the braking issues seem to be less responsive braking and slight jerking when putting constant pressure on the brakes at low speeds. when brought to the toyota dealership, they noted that there are no issues, however the master brake cylinder is likely to fail soon.

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 toyota prius. the contact stated while parked on a small hill, upon starting the vehicle and shifting to drive the vehicle started to roll forward down the hill. the brake was applied but failed to engage as the vehicle collided with a neighbor's fence and trailer. the brake warning was light illuminated during the failure. the contact stated that the passenger sustained bruising to the knee as well as he also sustained bruising to the knee that required no medical attention. a police report was not filed. the vehicle was taken to lakeland toyota (2925 mall hill dr, lakeland, fl 33810) where the brakes were repaired. the contact stated that the manufacturer was notified of the failure and the vehicle was inspected by a toyota engineer assistance field inspector. the failure mileage was approximately 197,356.

I took my prius to the dealer because the brake light was on, to resolve the problem the dealer replaced my master cylinder and brake booster and brake booster pump assembly. i found that there is a recall for the 2010 prius. t-cp-dom date of issue july 1, 2013. the recall is for the same problem i had, i do not know why i am being excluded from the recall. please reply

My brakes recently stopped working as they normally do (you had to press extremely hard on the pedal to get it to stop) and several lights came on the dashboard. prior to this the car was making a very strange noise when you start to push on the brakes. not like a typical squeaky brake sound. i took it to toyota and they gave me a quote for $3,700 stating that i needed a new brake cylinder assembly. i discovered a recall for 2010 prius for the exact diagnostic code and they said my prius was not covered by the recall. when you "reboot" the computer on the prius, the lights and brake problem go away. this appears to be a significant problem with the 2010 prius from what i have read on-line and toyota is not acknowledging it. it's also a very costly repair that seems to be easily fixed when you reboot the computer on the car. what is going on? how many people are paying toyota for this fix that appears to be a wide problem with the vehicle that should not be happening?

I took my prius to the dealer because the brake light was on, to resolve the problem they replaced my master cylinder and booster on my 2010 prius. i asked about a recall for the parts. i was told no recalls, i found that there is a recall for 2010 prius. t-cp-dom date of issue july 1, 2013. the recall is for the same problem i had

I was on the freeway in traffic, going 60 mph. there was road construction coming up ahead. i depressed the brake pedal and nothing happened. the car didn't slow down at all and i crashed into another vehicle. my car was manufactured when the 'voluntary safety recall' by toyota was supposed to address this, but i received no notification, nor did thousand oaks toyota, where i had the car serviced, communicate about it. *js

I've counted at least 30 brake booster/actuator complaints on this site year to date for the same issue on this model year car. our issue is the same as everyone else. just under 150k miles, brake, abs and traction control lights came on my daughter's car (we are original owners) as she was driving home from work. non responsive brakes, only rear brakes engage if you push the pedal to the floor of the car. took to dealer who diagnosed dtc c1391, accumulator leak malfunction. our car was not included in original warranty enhancement (manufacture date of 1/2010), so price quoted was $4814.66. our daughter cannot afford, so we called toyota warranty who offered us $2007 as a measure of good will, but no more. this is a serious safety issue, beyond ridiculous that some cars with the same defect had the warranty enhancement program available which paid for the entire repair, yet most others like us were denied the fix and are facing astronomical repair bills that many cannot afford, nor anticipate on a car such as a toyota. the brakes failed while my 22 year old daughter was driving - that could have gone so very wrong.

While driving on a bumpy surface the brakes slip when applied. stopping ability is reduced. this happens on a regular basis, on surface streets and highways. i have noticed it while stopping in a straight line, but it may also happen while stopping on a curve.

Brakes slip and lose grip while braking and traveling over moderate bumps or potholes, also happens while braking hard.

Park, abs, vcs, (!) warning lights on in dashboard. other symptoms - barking brakes and continuous pump whine, a cylcing electrical noise while parked. seems to be an issue with the actuator.
